Before COVID-19, most therapists had concerns about telepsychology, and only treated patients in person. During the COVID-19 lockdown, patients still needed therapy, but in-person therapy sessions became unsafe. The current study measured how many therapists are using online therapy before vs. during COVID-19, how much training they have received, and their knowledge about legal restrictions on using telepsychology. A sample of 768 U.S.A. mental health professionals completed a 29-item online survey. Results show that before COVID-19, most therapists only saw their patients in person (e.g., at the therapists office), but during the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly all therapists used a wide range of telecommunication technologies to communicate with their quarantined patients, including texting, telephones, video conferences, and even virtual reality. According to within-subject related samples comparisons, 39% of survey respondents used telepsychology before COVID-19, vs. 98% during COVID-19 (χ2 = 450.02, p < 0.001). Therapists reported high treatment effectiveness using telepsychology (7.45 on 0–10 scale). However, overall, on a 0–10 scale, therapists reported a significant increase in feeling burned out during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mean = 3.93 (SD = 1.93) before vs. 6.22 (SD = 2.27) during the pandemic (Z = −18.57, p < 0.001). Although the APA ethics guidelines encourage therapists to use telepsychology with their patients during the crisis, gaps in respondents' knowledge identify a need for increased specialized training and education. Although the current study showed that virtual reality is rarely used by the therapists surveyed, virtual reality is a promising new telepsychology technology. Billions of dollars are currently being invested in mass producing immersive virtual reality systems. In the future, as networked immersive Virtual Reality becomes more widely available, therapists and patients in physically different locations will be able to “meet” in a shared computer-generated world designed for therapy sessions, potentially including group sessions. Telepsychology and virtual reality have the potential to be increasingly valuable tools to help therapists mitigate the consequences of COVID-19. Research, development and training is recommended.

O viés de atenção para estímulos percebidos como ameaçadores pode estar envolvido na causa ou manutenção de transtornos de ansiedade. O objetivo deste estudo foi construir e testar uma tarefa de Stroop Emocional para avaliar a existência de um viés para palavras ameaçadoras em mulheres com Transtorno de Ansiedade Generalizada (TAG). Participaram 22 mulheres, sendo 12 diagnosticadas com TAG e 10 controles emparelhados. Palavras ansiogênicas e palavras-controle foram selecionadas do banco de palavras ANEW, a lista final foi selecionada por 6 psicoterapeutas experientes. Os participantes demonstraram viés de atenção para palavras ansiogênicas, sem haver diferença entre os dois grupos. A tarefa de Stroop desenvolvida foi suficientemente sensível para detectar o viés de atenção para estímulos percebidos como ameaçadores e pode ser útil para avaliar intervenções clínicas no futuro.

Heurísticas são regras gerais de influência utilizadas pelo decisor para simplificar seus julgamentos em tarefas decisórias de incerteza. Com o intuito de entender as regras heurísticas no julgamento e na tomada de decisão, realiza-se uma revisão teórica, que prioriza as pesquisas de Tversky e Kahneman, englobando as heurísticas de ancoragem, disponibilidade e representatividade.

Este estudo pretende verificar características do craving em alcoolistas, nos primeiros três dias de abstinência, comparar sua intensidade com a do período de consumo do álcool e verificar se está associado com a gravidade do alcoolismo. A amostra foi de 77 homens alcoolistas, internados para desintoxicação. Foi utilizada a Escala de Avaliação do Craving e o Short-Form Alcohol Dependence Data. Destes sujeitos, 58,2 nunca sentiu vontade de utilizar bebidas alcoólicas nos três primeiros dias de abstinência. Quanto ao período antes da internação, 90,9 relatou apresentar craving, mais intenso durante essa fase de consumo do que na abstinência. Obteve-se correlação positiva entre o craving e a gravidade da dependência. Conhecer as características do craving de alcoolistas torna possível ampliar as técnicas de prevenção de recaída.

This study intends to check craving characteristics in alcoholics during the first three days of abstinence syndrome, compare its intensity to the one during the alcohol consumption period, and verify if craving is associated with the degree of alcohol dependence. The sample is formed by 77 male alcoholics interned for detoxication. Scale for Craving Evaluation and a Short-Form Alcohol Dependence Data were applied. 58.2% of the participants never will to drink alcoholic beverages on the first three days of abstinence. Concerning the time before hospitalization, 90.9% stated feeling craving and during consumption stage it was more intense than during abstinence. There was positive correlation between craving and degree of alcohol dependence. Knowing about the craving characteristics in alcoholics makes possible to enhance techniques of relapse prevention.

Smoking is a public health problem that has victimized many people along the years (Gigliotti, Carneiro & Ferreira, 2001). Motivation is one of the most difficult aspects smokers have to face when they try to stop smoking (Heather, 1992; Di Clemente & Prochaska, 1985). The objective of this quasi-experimental study was to evaluate change in motivational stages during an eight-week smoking cessation treatment. The sample was comprised of 109 subjects who were evaluated in 4 moments, using the URICA, BAI, BDI, FTND Scales and the Monoximeter. The results indicate that the anxiety and depression scores of those who adhered to the treatment were lower than the ones of those who did not (p=0,023 and p=0,022, respectively).
