Abstract Background Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the foremost cause of mortality globally. Taurine, an amino acid, holds promise for cardiovascular health through mechanisms such as calcium regulation, blood pressure reduction, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Despite these potential benefits, previous studies have yielded inconsistent results. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aims to evaluate the existing evidence on the quantitative effects of taurine on hemodynamic parameters and cardiac function grading, which are indicative of overall cardiovascular health and performance. Methods We conducted an electronic search across multiple databases, including Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov, from their inception to January 2, 2024. Our analysis focused on key cardiovascular outcomes, such as heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional Classification. Meta-regression was applied to explore dose-dependent relationships based on the total taurine dose administered during the treatment period. A subgroup analysis, stratified according to the baseline disease status of patients, was also conducted. Results The analysis included a pooled sample of 808 participants from 20 randomized controlled trials. Taurine demonstrated a significant reduction in HR (weighted mean difference [WMD] = -3.579 bpm, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -6.044 to -1.114, p = 0.004), SBP (WMD = -3.999 mm Hg, 95% CI = -7.293 to -0.706, p = 0.017), DBP (WMD: -1.435 mm Hg, 95% CI: -2.484 to -0.386, p = 0.007), NYHA (WMD: -0.403, 95% CI: -0.522 to -0.283, p

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a common musculoskeletal disorder characterized by muscle pain, tenderness, and trigger points. Ultrasonography has emerged as a key tool for diagnosing and treating MPS owing to its ability to provide precise, minimally invasive guidance. This review discusses the use of ultrasonography in various approaches to evaluate and manage MPS. Studies have shown that shear-wave sonoelastography can effectively assess muscle elasticity and offer insights into trapezius stiffness in patients with MPS. Ultrasound-guided interfascial hydrodissection, especially with visual feedback, has demonstrated effectiveness in treating trapezius MPS. Similarly, ultrasound-guided rhomboid interfascial plane blocks and perimysium dissection for posterior shoulder MPS have significantly reduced pain and improved quality of life. The combination of extracorporeal shockwave therapy with ultrasound-guided lidocaine injections has been particularly successful in reducing pain and stiffness in trapezius MPS. Research regarding various guided injections, including dry needling, interfascial plane blocks, and fascial hydrodissection, emphasizes the importance of ultrasonography for accuracy and safety. Additionally, ultrasound-guided delivery of local anesthetics and steroids to the quadratus lumborum muscle has shown lasting pain relief over a 6-month period. Overall, these findings highlight the pivotal role of ultrasonography in the assessment and treatment of MPS.

Surgical repair of rotator cuff tears is performed routinely; however, the risks of re-tears and the associated consequences are significant. Sonoelastography, an imaging modality that evaluates the mechanical properties of tissues, can examine the dynamic transitions in rotator cuff stiffness following retear and investigate the relationship between these changes and the occurrences of retears. This systematic review aimed to summarize the role of perioperative sonoelastography in repaired rotator cuffs. A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases was conducted, covering studies published until June 19, 2023. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used for quality assessment. The key information extracted from each study included the injury/surgery type, follow-up duration, sonoelastography mode, and main sonoelastographic findings. Eleven eligible studies comprising 355 patients were included. All studies focused on supraspinatus muscles and tendons with previous arthroscopic repairs. During the postoperative 1st - 6th months, muscle stiffness increased in the supraspinatus and decreased in the ipsilateral deltoid. Failure to recover supraspinatus muscle elasticity might be indicative of potential tendon re-tear; however, it is imperative to first establish correlations with other imaging modalities. Conflicting findings have been observed regarding stiffening or softening of the supraspinatus tendon after surgical repair. The preoperative stiffness of the supraspinatus tendon did not correlate with postoperative tendon integrity or function.

Abstract Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of interconnected risk factors that significantly increase the likelihood of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Taurine has emerged as a potential therapeutic agent for MetS. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to evaluate the effects of taurine supplementation on MetS-related parameters. Methods We conducted electronic searches through databases like Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov, encompassing publications up to December 1, 2023. Our analysis focused on established MetS diagnostic criteria, including systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglyceride (TG), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Meta-regression explored potential dose-dependent relationships based on the total taurine dose administered during the treatment period. We also assessed secondary outcomes like body composition, lipid profile, and glycemic control. Results Our analysis included 1024 participants from 25 RCTs. The daily dosage of taurine in the studies ranged from 0.5 g/day to 6 g/day, with follow-up periods varying between 5 and 365 days. Compared to control groups, taurine supplementation demonstrated statistically significant reductions in SBP (weighted mean difference [WMD] = −3.999 mmHg, 95% confidence interval [CI] = −7.293 to −0.706, p = 0.017), DBP (WMD = −1.509 mmHg, 95% CI = −2.479 to −0.539, p = 0.002), FBG (WMD: −5.882 mg/dL, 95% CI: −10.747 to −1.018, p = 0.018), TG (WMD: −18.315 mg/dL, 95% CI: −25.628 to −11.002, p

Objective: This umbrella review synthesizes systematic reviews and meta-analyses to reach a conclusion concerning the overall effectiveness of ultrasound-guided vs landmark-guided injections for treating musculoskeletal pain. Design: Umbrella review. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Web of Science were searched for relevant systematic reviews and meta-analyses from inception to March 2024. Critical appraisal, data extraction, and synthesis were performed in accordance with the criteria for conducting an umbrella review. Results: Seventeen articles, comprising 4 systematic reviews and 13 meta-analyses, were included. Using the AMSTAR2 instrument for quality assessment, 3 articles were rated as high quality, 1 as moderate, 7 as low, and 6 as critically low. Generally, ultrasound-guided injections were found to be more accurate than landmark-guided injections, particularly in the shoulder joint, though the results for pain relief and functional outcomes varied. Ultrasound guidance was notably effective for injections into the bicipital groove, wrist, hip, and knee – yielding greater accuracy and improved pain management. Both ultrasound-guided and landmark-guided techniques showed low incidence of adverse effects. Conclusion: This umbrella review offers an in-depth analysis of the comparative effectiveness of ultrasound-guided and landmark-guided injections across a range of musculoskeletal sites/conditions. The findings suggest that ultrasound-guided is a reliable method.

Abstract Assessment of the posterior lateral knee pain poses diagnostic challenges, requiring accurate evaluation of various structures in light of the medical history and physical examination. Despite substantial progress in the ultrasonographic diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders, the current protocol (EURO-MUSCULUS/USPRM. Basic scanning protocols for knee) fails to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the intricate, tendons, and ligaments of the posterior lateral knee. This pictorial review aims to bridge this gap by offering a systematic approach to utilize ultrasound examination of the less-discussed structures in this specific region. Providing cadaveric and magnetic resonance images, this essay demonstrates the efficacy of ultrasound in diagnosing posterior lateral knee pain. Notably, pathologies such as ligamentous sprains and tears are clearly discernible. Moreover, the integration of ultrasound guidance plays a vital role in reducing the risk of inadvertent neurovascular injury during injection, such as the common peroneal nerve and lateral genicular artery. This comprehensive approach will enhance clinicians’ understanding and equip them with effective management strategies for posterior lateral knee pain. A 66-year-old woman presented with persistent knee effusion three months after undergoing a cemented medial uni-compartmental knee replacement. She was afebrile and able to walk with a stick. Physical examination revealed moderate effusion. Radiographs showed posteriorly extruded cement, while computed tomography confirmed the absence of implant loosening but was unable to adequately visualize the adjacent soft tissues due to metallic artifacts. Ultrasound identified posterior cement extrusion beyond the femoral component, causing a delamination tear of the posterior capsule and indentation on the medial gastrocnemius. Knee arthrocentesis yielded 60 mL of blood-stained fluid with unremarkable analysis, and the patient reported improvement following the procedure. To our knowledge, this is the first report to highlight the unique role of ultrasound in detailing the anatomy of extruded cement and its impact on adjacent soft tissues following knee replacement. We demonstrate the critical structures that should be evaluated and how ultrasound aids in managing this postoperative complication.

A 27-year-old female presented with persistent right medial plantar pain that developed over six months following an ankle sprain. The pain, described as sharp and radiating to the toes, progressively worsened, affecting her ability to walk. An initial ultrasound examination suggested medial plantar nerve compression by a lipoma, prompting her referral for ultrasound-guided hydrodissection. During the pre-procedure assessment, sono-palpation (palpation using the ultrasound transducer) localized the pain to the Master Knot of Henry—where the medial plantar nerve, artery, and flexor tendons intersect. No lipoma but a normal fat pad was observed. Ultrasound-guided hydrodissection with 5% dextrose mixed with lidocaine and saline was performed. After two sessions, her pain significantly decreased, with her visual analogue scale score dropping from 8 to 5 after the first session and to 2 after the second, allowing her to resume normal activities. This case highlights the value of ultrasound in accurately diagnosing and treating conditions involving the Master Knot of Henry.

Wave erosion of slopes can easily trigger landslides into marine environments and pose severe threats to both the ecological environment and human activities. Therefore, near-shore slope monitoring becomes crucial for preventing and alerting people to these potential disasters. To achieve a comprehensive understanding, it is imperative to conduct a detailed investigation into the dynamics of wave erosion processes acting on slopes. This research is conducted through flume tests, using a wave maker to create waves of various heights and frequencies to erode the slope models. During the tests, seismic signals, acoustic signals, and pore pressure generated by wave erosion and slope failure are recorded. Seismic and acoustic signals are analyzed, and time-frequency spectra are calculated using the Hilbert–Huang Transform to identify the erosion events and signal frequency ranges. Arias Intensity is used to assess seismic energy and explore the relationship between the amount of erosion and energy. The results show that wave height has a more decisive influence on erosion behavior and retreat than wave frequency. Rapid drawdown may potentially cause the slope to slide during cyclic swash and backwash wave action. As wave erosion changes from swash to impact, there is a significant increase in the spectral magnitude and Power Spectral Density (PSD) of both seismic and acoustic signals. An increase in pore pressure is observed due to the rise in the run-up height of waves. The amplitude of pore pressure will increase as the slope undergoes further erosion. Understanding the results of this study can aid in predicting erosion and in planning effective management strategies for slopes subject to wave action.

Abstract Objectives Low back pain is a prevalent public health issue caused by superior cluneal nerve (SCN) entrapment. This study aimed to explore the course of SCN branches, cross-sectional area (CSA) of the nerves, and effects of ultrasound-guided SCN hydrodissection. Methods SCN distance relative to the posterior superior iliac spines was measured and compared with ultrasound findings in asymptomatic volunteers. The CSA of the SCN, pressure-pain threshold, and pain measurements were obtained from asymptomatic controls and patients with SCN entrapment at various time points after hydrodissection (with 1 mL of 50% dextrose, 4 mL of 1% lidocaine, and 5 mL of 1% normal saline) in the short-axis view. Results Twenty sides of 10 formalin-fixed cadavers were dissected. The SCN locations on the iliac crest did not differ from the ultrasound findings in 30 asymptomatic volunteers. The average CSA of the SCN across different branches and sites ranged between 4.69–5.67 mm2 and did not vary across different segments/branches or pain statuses. Initial treatment success was observed in 77.7% (n = 28) of 36 patients receiving hydrodissection due to SCN entrapment. A group with initial treatment success experienced symptom recurrence in 25% (n = 7) of cases, and those with recurrent pain had a higher prevalence of scoliosis than those without symptom recurrence. Conclusions Ultrasonography effectively localizes SCN branches on the iliac crest, whereby increased nerve CSA is not useful for diagnosis. Most patients benefit from ultrasound-guided dextrose hydrodissection; however, those with scoliosis may experience symptom recurrence and whether structured rehabilitation can reduce recurrence post-injection should be considered as one perspective in future research. Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most common etiologies of knee pain and might be relieved with lumbopelvic manipulation (LPM). This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effects of LPM on pain reduction in patients with PFPS. Electronic databases were searched from inception to December 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the effects of LPM on PFPS. The primary outcome was the change in visual analog or numeric rating scale scores assessing pain. Ten studies comprising 346 participants were included. Significant pain reduction was noted in the LPM group (Hedges’ g = −0.706, 95% confidence interval [CI] = −1.197 to −0.214, p = 0.005, I2 = 79.624%) compared with the control group. Moreover, pain relief was more pronounced when LPM was combined with other physical therapies (Hedges’ g = −0.701, 95% CI = −1.386 to −0.017, p = 0.045, I2 = 73.537%). No adverse events were reported during the LPM. The LPM appears to be a safe and effective adjuvant therapy for pain reduction in patients with PFPS. Clinicians should consider adding LPM to other physical therapies (e.g., quadriceps muscle strengthening) during the management of these patients.

AbstractIntroduction Sonoelastography has been increasingly used for non-invasive evaluation of the mechanical features of human tissues. The interplay between orofacial pain and regional muscle activity appears clinically paramount, although only few imaging studies have investigated this association. Using shear wave sonoelastography (SWS), this study ascertained whether orofacial pain induced alterations in the stiffness of superficial and deep masticatory muscles.Methods All participants were systematically evaluated for oral/facial-related conditions, including the area and intensity of pain. SWS was applied to measure the stiffness of the bilateral masseter, temporalis, and lateral pterygoid muscles. The association between orofacial pain and muscle stiffness/thickness was investigated using a generalized estimating equation for adjusting the influence of age, sex, laterality, and body mass index on muscle thickness/stiffness.Results A total of 98 participants were included in the present study: 48 asymptomatic controls, 13 patients with unilateral pain, and 37 patients with bilateral orofacial pain. The reliability, quantified by the intraclass correlation coefficient for muscle stiffness measurement, ranged from 0.745 to 0.893. Orofacial pain at the individual muscle level was significantly associated with masseter muscle stiffness. A trend of increased stiffness (p = 0.06) was also observed in relation to the painful side of the temporalis muscle. No significant correlation was identified between the numeric rating scales for pain and stiffness measurements.Conclusions SWS provides reliable stiffness measurements for the superficial and deep masticatory muscles. The ipsilateral masseter and temporalis muscles might be stiffer than those on the side without orofacial pain. Future studies using the present sonoelasotography protocol can be designed to investigate the stiffness changes in the target muscles after interventions.

Background: To investigate the effectiveness of muscle energy technique (MET) for treatment of non-specific neck pain (NSNP). Methods: A literature search was performed using electronic databases from their inception until October 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the effects of MET on NSNP. A change in pain intensity and reduced disability were the primary and secondary outcomes, respectively, standardized using Hedges’ g. A random effects model was used for data pooling. Objective: Post-stroke shoulder pain is a serious challenge for stroke survivors. The aim of this meta-analysis was to review the literature to confirm information on structural changes in post-stroke shoulders detected by ultrasound examination. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched until 7 December 2022, for studies describing shoulder sonographic findings in stroke patients. Two independent authors selected the studies, extracted the data, and performed the critical appraisal. Results: A total of 23 clinical studies were included. The most prevalent pathologies in hemiplegic shoulders pertained to the biceps long head tendon (41.4%), followed by the supraspinatus tendon (33.2%), subdeltoid bursa (29.3%), acromioclavicular joint (15.0%), and subscapularis tendon (9.2%). The common pathological findings encompassed bicipital peritendinous effusion (39.2%), biceps tendinopathy (35.5%), subdeltoid bursitis (29.3%) and supraspinatus tendinopathy (24.6%). Biceps long head tendon and supraspinatus tendon abnormalities were observed significantly more in the hemiplegic (vs contralateral) shoulders, with odds ratios of 3.814 (95% confidence interval 2.044–7.117) and 2.101 (95% confidence interval 1.257–3.512), respectively. No correlation was observed between motor function and shoulder pathology. Conclusion: Ultrasonography enabled the identification of common shoulder pathologies after stroke. Further research is needed to establish the association between these changes and the clinical course of stroke patients.

The paraspinal muscles of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine are important pain generators because muscle strains or myofascial pain syndrome caused by trigger points are common during clinical practice. Ultrasonography is the most convenient imaging tool for evaluating these muscles due to its advantages, such as providing good delineation of soft tissues, easy accessibility, and zero radiation. Additionally, ultrasound can serve as a useful guiding tool for paraspinal muscle intervention to prevent inadvertent injuries to vital axial neurovascular structures. This pictorial essay presents ultrasound scanning protocols for the paraspinal and other associated muscles as well as a discussion of their clinical relevance. Axial magnetic resonance imaging has also been used to elucidate reciprocal anatomy. In conclusion, ultrasound imaging proves to be a valuable tool that facilitates the differentiation of individual paraspinal muscles. This capability significantly enhances the precision of interventions designed to address myofascial pain syndrome.

Abstract Background Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Sarcopenia, defined as the loss of muscle mass and function, is known to cause adverse health outcomes. The purpose of this umbrella review was to integrate published systematic reviews and meta-analyses exploring sarcopenia and lung cancer to provide comprehensive knowledge on their relationship. Methods Eligible studies were searched from scientific databases until June 28, 2022. Critical appraisal was performed using A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2. The impact of sarcopenia on the pathophysiology, prevalence, and prognosis of lung cancer is summarized at the level of systematic reviews or meta-analyses. Results Fourteen reviews and meta-analyses were conducted. The methodological quality was high for one review, low for nine, and critically low for four. The most common standard for diagnosing sarcopenia in the lung cancer population is computed tomography (CT) to measure the skeletal muscle index at the third lumbar vertebra (L3). Sarcopenia was highly prevalent among patients with lung cancer, with a pooled prevalence ranging from 42.8% to 45.0%. The association between sarcopenia and increased postoperative complications and decreased disease control rates with immune checkpoint inhibitors has been demonstrated. Mortality was significantly higher in sarcopenic patients than in non-sarcopenic patients with lung cancer, regardless of the stage of disease or type of treatment. Conclusions Sarcopenia is a poor prognostic factor for lung cancer. Future studies are necessary to clarify the pathophysiology of sarcopenia and develop effective interventions for sarcopenia in patients with lung cancer.

Inguinal hernia is the most prevalent type of abdominal wall hernia. Indirect inguinal hernia is twice as common as direct inguinal hernia. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging can be used to evaluate inguinal hernia, but these modalities are greatly limited by their cost and availability. Ultrasonography has emerged as the most convenient imaging tool for diagnosing inguinal hernia due to its advantages, such as portability and absence of radiation. The present pictorial review presents an overview on the use of ultrasonography in the evaluation of inguinal hernia with a particular emphasis on the regional anatomy, relevant scanning tips, identification of subtypes, postoperative follow-up, and diagnosis of pathologies mimicking inguinal hernia.

Abstract There is insufficient evidence to prove the effect of the Post-acute Care (PAC) program on post-stroke recovery. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the PAC versus traditional inpatient rehabilitation (non-PAC) for middle- and old-aged stroke survivors. This multicenter cohort study enrolled 334 stroke patients admitted for post-stroke rehabilitation. The outcome variables included the Barthel Index (BI), Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS), Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF), EuroQoL-5D (EQ-5D), Lawton–Brody Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Scale, and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The inverse-probability-of-treatment-weighting method was used to analyze the differences in outcomes between the PAC and non-PAC groups. The PAC group showed better improvements in BI, MNA-SF, EQ-5D, Instrumental ADL, and MMSE compared to the non-PAC group, with differences in effect sizes of 0.54 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.38–0.71), 0.26 (95% CI 0.10–0.42), 0.50 (95% CI 0.33–0.66), 0.44 (95% CI 0.28–0.60) and 0.34 (95% CI 0.17–0.50), respectively. The PAC project showed more improvement in basic and instrumental ADL and status of swallowing, nutrition, and cognition than those of non-PAC, which had less length of stay restricted by the National Health Insurance. More studies are warranted to investigate the influence of hospital stay and duration from stroke onset on the PAC’s effectiveness.

Elucidating its dynamic interaction within the knee joint, this exploration delves into the awareness regarding the articularis genus muscle for ultrasound-guided suprapatellar recess injections. While injections into the infrapatellar recess may proceed without ultrasound guidance, we highlight concerns regarding the potential cartilage injury. In contrast, especially with ultrasound guidance, suprapatellar recess injections significantly mitigate this risk, especially in the case of collapsed recess. Originating from the distal femur and vastus intermedius, the articularis genus muscle influences the tension of the suprapatellar recess during knee motion. Sonographically identifying this muscle involves visualizing the slender linear structure of the suprapatellar recess, with guidance on differentiation from the vastus intermedius. We provide a succinct approach to ultrasound-guided suprapatellar recess injections, emphasizing needle insertion techniques and strategies to prevent fluid accumulation. In conclusion, this study serves as a concise clinician’s guide, underscoring the significance of the articularis genus muscle’s sonoanatomy in ultrasound-guided suprapatellar recess injections. Ultimately, procedural precision and patient safety can be advanced in this aspect.

Agenesis and hypoplasia affecting multiple flexor tendons within the same hand represent an exceedingly uncommon occurrence, with no previous studies addressing this condition. This report details a 4-year-old girl with agenesis of the right third and fourth fingers, who sought consultation due to the inability to flex her seemingly unaffected second and fifth fingers. Ultrasound examination revealed substantial thinning of the flexor tendons in the second to fifth digits, with a notable absence of attachment to the middle phalanx. In addition to flexor tendon hypoplasia, hypoplasia of the third and fourth middle phalanges was observed. Hand deformities featuring both finger agenesis and flexor tendon hypoplasia across multiple fingers were exceptionally rare. In such instances, ultrasound, in conjunction with radiography, emerges as the recommended initial imaging tool for comprehensive evaluation of both the phalangeal bones and flexor tendons.

Lumbar radiculopathy causes lower back and lower extremity pain that may be managed with neural mobilization (NM) techniques. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effectiveness of NM in alleviating pain and reducing disability in patients with lumbar radiculopathy. We hypothesized that NM would reduce pain and improve disability in the lumbar radiculopathy population, leveraging the statistical power of multiple studies. Electronic databases from their inception up to October 2023 were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that explored the impact of NM on lumbar radiculopathy. Our primary outcome measure was the alteration in pain intensity, while the secondary one was the improvement of disability, standardized using Hedges’ g. To combine the data, we employed a random-effects model. A total of 20 RCTs comprising 877 participants were included. NM yielded a significant reduction in pain intensity (Hedges’ g = −1.097, 95% CI = −1.482 to −0.712, p < 0.001, I2 = 85.338%). Subgroup analyses indicated that NM effectively reduced pain, whether employed alone or in conjunction with other treatments. Furthermore, NM significantly alleviated disability, with a notable effect size (Hedges’ g = −0.964, 95% CI = −1.475 to −0.453, p < 0.001, I2 = 88.550%), particularly in chronic cases. The findings provide valuable insights for clinicians seeking evidence-based interventions for this patient population. This study has limitations, including heterogeneity, potential publication bias, varied causal factors in lumbar radiculopathy, overall study quality, and the inability to explore the impact of neural pathology on NM treatment effectiveness, suggesting opportunities for future research improvements.

Objectives: Insertion of a double-lumen endotracheal tube (DLT) is the most commonly used method for one-lung ventilation (OLV). This meta-analysis was aimed at investigating the performance of lung ultrasound in assessing the DLT position in OLV. Methods: Electronic databases were searched for related trials from inception to October 2022. The primary outcome was the performance of ultrasound or clinical evaluation in confirming the correctness of the DLT position, using fiberoptic bronchoscopy or intraoperative direct visualization of lung collapse as the gold standard. The secondary outcome was the time required to confirm or adjust the DTL position. Results: Five randomized controlled trials and three observational studies involving 771 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound were 0.93 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.79–0.98) and 0.61 (95% CI: 0.41–0.77), respectively, while those of clinical evaluation were 0.93 (95% CI: 0.73–0.99) and 0.35 (95% CI: 0.25–0.47), respectively. The pooled procedure duration was 122.27 s (95% CI: 20.85–223.69) with ultrasound and 112.03 s (95% CI: 95.30–128.76) with clinical evaluation. The area under the curve for discriminating the DLT position was 0.86 (95% CI: 0.82–0.88) for ultrasound and 0.52 (95% CI: 0.48–0.57) for clinical evaluation. Conclusions: Compared to clinical evaluation, ultrasound has a similar sensitivity but a better specificity for confirming the correctness of the DLT position. Ultrasound is an acceptable imaging tool for assessing DTL placement in OLV.

This paper presents a switch-mode rectifier (SMR) fed synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) drive. Good driving performance over wide operating range is achieved via: (i) boosted and well-regulated DC-link voltage established by the SMR; (ii) real-time commutation angle tuning by the adaptive commutation scheme (ACS) using on-line fitted motor key parameters, and equivalently by the model-free intuitive commutation tuning (ICT) scheme; (iii) robust current control considering slotting harmonic effects; and (iv) quantitative and robust speed controls. First, the SynRM drive with fixed DC-link voltage is established. The real-time commutation tuning scheme with motor total loss minimization is proposed. Then the dynamic current and speed control schemes are designed. The feedback controllers are augmented with simple robust control schemes to have satisfactory responses. Under well-regulated DC-link voltage, good line drawn power quality is obtained simultaneously. Moreover, the regenerative braking power can be recovered back to the utility grid. Finally, the whole SMR-fed SynRM drive is evaluated. The motor driving characteristics under higher speeds and heavier loads are enhanced.

Background: Minimally invasive carpal tunnel release has recently emerged as the primary surgical approach for recalcitrant carpal tunnel syndrome. A major concern related to surgical failure with this technique is the incomplete release of the flexor retinaculum. Case presentation: We developed a technique using dynamic ultrasound for evaluating the adequacy of median nerve decompression following minimally invasive carpal tunnel release. This novel imaging method was applied to two patients who showed significant symptom relief after the intervention. This case study also provides details of the dynamic ultrasound protocol and highlights the advantages of this technique. Conclusion: Dynamic ultrasound imaging can be used to confirm the completeness of carpal tunnel decompression. A large-scale prospective trial should be conducted to validate whether additional dynamic ultrasound examination can improve the outcome of minimally invasive carpal tunnel release.

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy for which ultrasound imaging has recently emerged as a valuable diagnostic tool. This meta-analysis aims to investigate the role of ultrasound radiomics in the diagnosis of CTS and compare it with other diagnostic approaches. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases from inception to September 2023. The included studies were assessed for quality using the Quality Assessment Tool for Diagnostic Accuracy Studies. The primary outcome was the diagnostic performance of ultrasound radiomics compared to radiologist evaluation for diagnosing CTS. Results: Our meta-analysis included five observational studies comprising 840 participants. In the context of radiologist evaluation, the combined statistics for sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic odds ratio were 0.78 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.71 to 0.83), 0.72 (95% CI, 0.59 to 0.81), and 9 (95% CI, 5 to 15), respectively. In contrast, the ultrasound radiomics training mode yielded a combined sensitivity of 0.88 (95% CI, 0.85 to 0.91), a specificity of 0.88 (95% CI, 0.84 to 0.92), and a diagnostic odds ratio of 58 (95% CI, 38 to 87). Similarly, the ultrasound radiomics testing mode demonstrated an aggregated sensitivity of 0.85 (95% CI, 0.78 to 0.89), a specificity of 0.80 (95% CI, 0.73 to 0.85), and a diagnostic odds ratio of 22 (95% CI, 12 to 41). Conclusions: In contrast to assessments by radiologists, ultrasound radiomics exhibited superior diagnostic performance in detecting CTS. Furthermore, there was minimal variability in the diagnostic accuracy between the training and testing sets of ultrasound radiomics, highlighting its potential as a robust diagnostic tool in CTS.

Ultrasound has emerged as a highly valuable tool in imaging peripheral nerve lesions in the wrist region, particularly for common pathologies such as carpal tunnel and Guyon’s canal syndromes. Extensive research has demonstrated nerve swelling proximal to the entrapment site, an unclear border, and flattening as features of nerve entrapments. However, there is a dearth of information regarding small or terminal nerves in the wrist and hand. This article aims to bridge this knowledge gap by providing a comprehensive overview concerning scanning techniques, pathology, and guided-injection methods for those nerve entrapments. The median nerve (main trunk, palmar cutaneous branch, and recurrent motor branch), ulnar nerve (main trunk, superficial branch, deep branch, palmar ulnar cutaneous branch, and dorsal ulnar cutaneous branch), superficial radial nerve, posterior interosseous nerve, palmar common/proper digital nerves, and dorsal common/proper digital nerves are elaborated in this review. A series of ultrasound images are used to illustrate these techniques in detail. Finally, sonographic findings complement electrodiagnostic studies, providing better insight into understanding the whole clinical scenario, while ultrasound-guided interventions are safe and effective for treating relevant nerve pathologies.

Abstract Background The prognosis of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is very poor. While several prehospital factors are known to be associated with improved survival, the impact of prehospital factors on different age groups is unclear. The objective of the study was to access the impact of prehospital factors and pre-existing comorbidities on OHCA outcomes in different age groups. Methods A retrospective observational analysis was conducted using the emergency medical service (EMS) database from January 2015 to December 2019. We collected information on prehospital factors, underlying diseases, and outcome of OHCAs in different age groups. Kaplan-Meier type survival curves and multivariable logistic regression were used to analyze the association between modifiable pre-hospital factors and outcomes. Results A total of 4188 witnessed adult OHCAs were analyzed. Background: Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain. A common complaint is soreness. However, until now, no assessment tool is available to address soreness and evaluate its impact on disease severity. We aimed to establish a questionnaire for soreness assessment and to evaluate its validity in fibromyalgia patients. Methods: Patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia per the American College of Rheumatology criteria (2011) were recruited. The Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire with an integration of Soreness Assessment (FIQRS) was established by adding five items pertinent to soreness sensation to the existing FIQR. The participants were asked to evaluate their soreness symptoms by filling out the FIQRS twice. The test-retest reliability and internal consistency were assessed. Construct validity was evaluated by correlations with the FIQR and fibromyalgia symptom severity (SS) score. Results: Sixty-two patients with fibromyalgia were recruited, including 57 females (91.9%; mean age: 51.4 years). The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of test-retest reliability was 0.92 for the FIQRS overall score. The Cronbach's α of all the items in the FIQRS was 0.93. Background: The Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) recommends that intravenous antimicrobials be administered within one hour to treat sepsis in both adult and pediatric patients. However, most studies on the timing of antibiotics have been based on adults so far. Therefore, the goal of this study was to clarify the clinical outcomes of the timing of antibiotics use in young infants diagnosed with invasive bacterial infections. Methods: We conducted this retrospective, cohort study at a single tertiary medical center during the period of 2007–2013 and included young infants visiting the PED diagnosed with an invasive bacterial infection. Early antibiotics use is defined as broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics given within one hour of a patient's triage at PED. In this study, we have analyzed the factors associated with early antibiotics use and measured such primary outcomes as mortality, ICU admission, ventilation support, and length of hospital stay. Results: A total of 1231 visits of young infants with fever occurred during our study period, and we included 41 patients in our study; 29 of them were diagnosed with bacteremia and the remaining 12 with bacterial meningitis. Early antibiotics use was also associated with a shortened hospital stay (14 ± 8.5 vs. 24 ± 19.6; p = 0.043). However, no statistical differences were observed with regard to mortality, ICU admission, or ventilation support. Conclusion: Among young infants that visited the pediatric department with an invasive bacterial infection, early broad-spectrum antibiotics use was not associated with reduced mortality rate, ICU admission, or ventilator support. Objective: Current imaging methods used to examine patients with subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) are limited by their semi-quantitative nature and their capability of capturing dynamic movements. This study aimed to develop a quantitative analytic model to assess subacromial motions using dynamic ultrasound and to examine their reliability and potential influencing factors.Method: We included 48 healthy volunteers and examined their subacromial motions with dynamic ultrasound imaging. The parameters were the minimal vertical acromiohumeral distance, rotation radius, and degrees of the humeral head. The generalized estimating equation (GEE) was used to investigate the impact of different shoulder laterality, postures, and motion phases on the outcome.Result: Using the data of the minimal vertical acromiohumeral distance, the intra-rater and inter-rater reliabilities (intra-class correlation coefficient) were determined as 0.94 and 0.88, respectively. In the GEE analysis, a decrease in the minimal vertical acromiohumeral distance was associated with the abduction phase and full-can posture, with a beta coefficient of −0.02 cm [95% confidence interval (CI), −0.03 to −0.01] and −0.07 cm (95% CI, −0.11 to −0.02), respectively. The abduction phase led to a decrease in the radius of humeral rotation and an increase in the angle of humeral rotation, with a beta coefficient of −1.28 cm (95% CI, −2.16 to −0.40) and 6.60° (95% CI, 3.54–9.67), respectively. A significant negative correlation was observed between the rotation angle and radius of the humeral head and between the rotation angle and the minimal vertical acromiohumeral distance.Conclusion: Quantitative analysis of dynamic ultrasound imaging enables the delineation of subacromial motion with good reliability. The vertical acromiohumeral distance is the lowest in the abduction phase and full-can posture, and the rotation angle of the humeral head has the potential to serve as a new parameter for the evaluation of SIS.

This report aimed to present a case of wrist-tendon rupture and to discuss a rare complication after corticosteroid injection. A 67-year-old woman had difficulty extending her left-thumb interphalangeal joint several weeks after a palpation-guided local corticosteroid injection. Passive motions remained intact without sensory abnormalities. Ultrasound examination showed hyperechoic tissues at the site of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon at the wrist level and an atrophic EPL muscle stump at the forearm level. Dynamic imaging demonstrated no motion in the EPL muscle during passive thumb flexion/extension. The diagnosis of complete EPL rupture, possibly due to inadvertent intratendinous corticosteroid injection, was therefore confirmed.

ABSTRACT: Background: The anti-spasticity efficacy of botulinum toxin (BoNT) injection has been well established for patients with chronic stroke; however, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), i.e. focused shockwave (FSW) and radial shockwave (RSW), has recently been applied. We aimed to investigate the comparative effectiveness of BoNT vs. ESWT in the reduction of spasticity among stroke survivors. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched from the earliest record to September 2021 for randomized controlled trials. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) on the reduction of the Modified Ashworth Scale before or at the 6th post-treatment week (short-term) and between the 7th and 12th weeks (mid-term) after the intervention were calculated. Ranking probabilities of the WMD were simulated to determine which treatment had the potential to possess the best effectiveness. inplasy.com registration: INPLASY202170018. Findings: A total of 33 studies comprising 1,930 patients were enrolled. The network meta-analysis revealed that BoNT injections, FSW and RSW were better in spasticity reduction than the control treatment(s) at the short term, with WMDs of -0.69 (95% CI, -0.87 to -0.50), -0.36 (95% CI, -0.69 to -0.03) and -0.62 (95% CI, -0.84 to -0.40), respectively. Likewise, mid-term effects of BoNT injections, FSW and RSW also revealed superiority, with WMDs of -0.44 (95% CI, -0.62 to -0.26), -0.74 (95% CI, -1.26 to -0.23) and -0.79 (95% CI, -1.07 to -0.51), respectively. Ranking probability analysis revealed that RSW had the highest probability of being the best treatment for spasticity reduction at the short-term (62.2%) and mid-term (72.3%) periods during the follow up. Interpretation: BoNT injections and ESWT are effective in alleviating post-stroke spasticity at the mid-term. The effectiveness of ESWT was comparable to BoNT injections, and RSW had the potential to be the best treatment for spasticity reduction among the three treatment options. More prospective trials incorporating head-to-head comparisons of BoNT injections vs. ESWT are needed to validate the role of ESWT in reducing post-stroke spasticity. Neuropathic pain, affecting 6.9–10% of the general population, has a negative impact on patients’ quality of life and potentially leads to functional impairment and disability. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)—a safe, indirect and non-invasive technique—has been increasingly applied for treating neuropathic pain. The mechanism underlying rTMS is not yet well understood, and the analgesic effects of rTMS have been inconsistent with respect to different settings/parameters, causing insufficient evidence to determine its efficacy in patients with neuropathic pain. This narrative review aimed to provide an up-to-date overview of rTMS for treating neuropathic pain as well as to summarize the treatment protocols and related adverse effects from existing clinical trials. Current evidence supports the use of 10 Hz HF-rTMS of the primary motor cortex to reduce neuropathic pain, especially in patients with spinal cord injury, diabetic neuropathy and post-herpetic neuralgia. However, the lack of standardized protocols impedes the universal use of rTMS for neuropathic pain. rTMS was hypothesized to achieve analgesic effects by upregulating the pain threshold, inhibiting pain impulse, modulating the brain cortex, altering imbalanced functional connectivity, regulating neurotrophin and increasing endogenous opioid and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Further studies are warranted to explore the differences in the parameters/settings of rTMS for treating neuropathic pain due to different disease types.

Ischiofemoral impingement syndrome is a neglected cause of posterior hip pain which is derived from narrowing of the space between the lateral aspect of the ischium and the medial aspect of the lesser trochanter. Its diagnosis is challenging and requires the combination of physical tests and imaging studies. In the present narrative review, we found that femoral anteversion predisposes patients to the narrowing of the ischiofemoral space and subsequent quadratus femoris muscle injury. Magnetic resonance imaging serves as the gold-standard diagnostic tool, which facilities the quantification of the ischiofemoral distance and the recognition of edema/fat infiltration/tearing of the quadratus femoris muscle. Ultrasound is useful for scrutinizing the integrity of deep gluteal muscles, and its capability to measure the ischiofemoral space is comparable to that of magnetic resonance. Various injection regimens can be applied to treat ischiofemoral impingement syndrome under ultrasound guidance and they appear to be safe and effective. Finally, more randomized controlled trials are needed to build solid bases of evidence on ultrasound-guided interventions in the management of ischiofemoral impingement syndrome.

The prognosis of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is very poor. Although several pre-hospital factors are associated with survival, the different association of pre-hospital factors with OHCA outcomes in pediatric and adult groups remain unclear. To assess the association of pre-hospital factors with OHCA outcomes among pediatric and adult groups, a retrospective observational study was conducted using the emergency medical service (EMS) database in Kaohsiung from January 2015 to December 2019. Pre-hospital factors, underlying diseases, and OHCA outcomes were collected for the pediatric (Age ≤ 20) and adult groups. Kaplan-Meier type plots and multivariable logistic regression were used to analyze the association between pre-hospital factors and outcomes. In total, 7,461 OHCAs were analyzed. After adjusting for EMS response time, bystander CPR, attended by EMT-P, witness, and pre-hospital defibrillation, we found that age [odds ratio (OR) = 0.877, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.764–0.990, p = 0.033], public location (OR = 7.681, 95% CI: 1.975–33.428, p = 0.003), and advanced airway management (AAM) (OR = 8.952; 95% CI, 1.414–66.081; p = 0.02) were significantly associated with survival till hospital discharge in pediatric OHCAs. The results of Kaplan-Meier type plots with log-rank test showed a significant difference between the pediatric and adult groups in survival for 2 h (p < 0.001), 24 h (p < 0.001), hospital discharge (p < 0.001), and favorable neurologic outcome (p < 0.001). AAM was associated with improved survival for 2 h (p = 0.015), 24 h (p = 0.023), and neurologic outcome (p = 0.018) only in the pediatric group. There were variations in prognostic factors between pediatric and adult patients with OHCA. The prognosis of the pediatric group was better than that of the adult group. Furthermore, AAM was independently associated with outcomes in pediatric patients, but not in adult patients. Age and public location of OHCA were independently associated with survival till hospital discharge in both pediatric and adult patients.

A wireless power transfer (WPT) system with bidirectional power flow control for charging batteries and drawing electric power from batteries is presented in this paper for e-bike sharing applications. The proposed WPT consists of a bidirectional DC-DC converter and a sandwiched coil set, which includes primary winding with ferrite pad in charging stations and a movable secondary coil without ferrite pad, which is inserted into the primary coils to receive or transmit energy, on the e-bike. Hence, the proposed coil set could provide high coupling factor, better tolerance of misalignment, and a compact size that enables easy installation in the current mechanism of bike-sharing systems. The Maxwell 3D is adopted to design coil sets, which are based on the known resistance of Litz wire, and the effect of the ferrite pad and misalignment are analyzed to achieve good performance. To select a suitable converter, the characteristics of predesigned coils are simulated using Maxwell 3D, MATLAB and PSIM. Then, a full-bridge CLLC converter with the same resonant frequency for charging and discharging modes is chosen to provide minimal loss by using the synchronous rectifier on the 48-V side and voltage gain without the loading effect. Finally, a digital signal processor-based digitally controlled CLLC converter is constructed to verify the performance of the proposed WPT, which can provide 200 to 48 V/500 W charging and discharging functions with constant current/constant voltage modes and fast-response current control. In addition, the maximum efficiency is 96% at 52 V and 75% rated load in charging mode.

Background: The utility of musculoskeletal ultrasound (US), both in the clinical settings and scientific arena, has significantly increased in recent years. Aims: The aim of this study was to report and analyze the publications on musculoskeletal US in top rehabilitation journals (indexed by the 'Rehabilitation' category of Journal Citation Reports (JCR), Clarivate Analytics). Methods: The search was carried out up to July 2018 through Web of Science (Science Citation Index-Expanded). The literature search comprised all 65 journals listed in the 2017 category “Rehabilitation” according to the JCR. Results: A total of 971 papers published in 39 different journals from 1989 to 2018 were analyzed. The top three publishing countries (in decreasing order) appeared as the United States of America (USA), Turkey and Taiwan. The American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, PM&R and the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation were the top three journals (in decreasing order) publishing about topics on musculoskeletal US. The most commonly studied diseases in humans were musculoskeletal conditions, followed by neurological disorders. Physiatrists and PRM departments (46.9%) prevail as far as publishing specialties were concerned. Although the use of interventional US seems to have increased after 2000, diagnostic US is still ranked the first, when the purpose of the conducted study is taken into consideration. Conclusion: Accordingly, we believe that this scientific output might help to raise awareness as regards the potential role of US in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine.

Abstract Background Use of ultrasonography has revolutionized diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders. Until now, few studies have investigated usefulness of a short-period workshop for musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) education. In this research, we attempted to explore (1) whether the physicians felt it useful to attend this type of courses for improving knowledge of sonoanatomy and scanning skills, (2) if the attendees’ perceived confidence in musculoskeletal diagnoses by using ultrasound increased following the program and (3) whether differences existed in perceived usefulness and confidence regrading different sessions of the course. Methods The target participants of the courses were postgraduate physicians without limitation of their specialties. The attendees’ responses to questionnaires before and after the course were reviewed. The workshop contained didactic and practical sessions on 6 major joints in accordance with the scanning protocols of EURO-MUSCULUS/USPRM. The course usefulness and perceived confidence in MSKUS examination were evaluated using a 5-point Likert scale. Data relevant to participants’ pre-workshop confidence levels were also analyzed. If any participant attended the course for more than 1 time, only their first survey was used for analysis. Results The study included 156 participants. The average rating for the course usefulness ranged between 4 (useful) to 5 (very useful). There was no difference in perceived usefulness between the didactic and hands-on practical sessions. Participants’ perceived confidence significantly increased after the workshop but appeared to be lowest for evaluation on the hip joint. Previous experience in performing MSKUS (in years) was consistently associated with the level of pre-workshop confidence. Conclusion A short period ultrasound workshop might be useful regarding making musculoskeletal diagnoses by using ultrasound based on an increase in post-workshop confidence in MSKUS examinations. The perceived confidence of hip scanning was lower than that of other joints after the course, indicating inadequacy of education in hip sonoanatomy and intensity of hand-on practice in the present program. An increase in the faculty-to-student ratio or length of practice in the hip section should be implemented in the future course.

Background/purpose: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE), a major neuropsychiatric complication in advanced liver disease, is associated with poor prognosis. Sarcopenia, characterized by a decline in muscle mass, strength, and physical performance, is prevalent in liver cirrhosis. This study aims to explore whether sarcopenia is associated with HE in cirrhotic patients. Methods: PubMed and EMBASE were searched for relevant cohort and case-control studies investigating the association between sarcopenia and HE up to July 2018. Data of patients' characteristics, definition of low muscle mass, and protocols of grading/diagnosing HE were retrieved. The primary outcome was estimated by a pooled odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI), using a random effect model. Results: The meta-analysis enrolled 6 studies, comprising 1795 patients. Sarcopenia was positively associated with the presence of HE (OR 2.74 with a 95% CI, 1.87 to 4.01). The association was less likely to be influenced by differences in research designs, focused study outcomes, muscle mass measurements, and protocols of grading/diagnosing HE. There was lack of evidence supporting higher serum ammonia levels in patients with sarcopenia. Conclusion: In patients with liver cirrhosis, there is a significant association between sarcopenia and HE. A greater number of prospective studies are necessary to clarify whether the association remains even after adjusting relevant confounders and to suggest effective prevention of HE in patients with coexisting sarcopenia. A 3-year-old boy was found to have a painless mass over his right anterior lateral knee for the previous 6 months. The mass was hardly identified during knee extension and became visible upon squatting. There was no specific finding on ultrasound imaging over his right knee at the supine extended position. During squatting, ultrasound imaging showed an ill-demarcated hyperechoic mass protruding next to the cartilage overlying the distal femur towards the subcutaneous layer through a slit over the lateral patellar retinaculum. Herniation of the fat pad through a defect in the lateral patellar retinaculum was diagnosed. Our case highlights the usefulness of ultrasound examination as regards the lateral patellar retinaculum defect in pediatric knees, as well as its capability for dynamic scanning to capture the exact “pathological moment”.

Sarcopenic dysphagia is defined as difficulty in swallowing due to sarcopenia, which may be related to weakness of the tongue muscles. This meta-analysis aimed to explore the association between tongue strength and sarcopenia and to determine whether tongue strength measurement could be a specific indicator of sarcopenic dysphagia. We conducted a systematic search of electronic databases from their inception to February 2021 for clinical studies that investigated tongue strength in participants with and without sarcopenia. The primary outcome was the weighted mean difference (WMD) and standardized mean difference (SMD) of tongue pressure between the different groups. The secondary outcome was the correlation of tongue pressure with the subcomponents that defined sarcopenia. Ten studies that involved 1,513 participants were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with those without sarcopenia, patients with sarcopenia had significantly less tongue pressure, with a WMD of −4.353 kPa (95% CI, −7.257 to −1.450) and an SMD of −0.581 (95% CI, −0.715 to −0.446). There was no significant difference in tongue pressure between patients with sarcopenic dysphagia and those with non-sarcopenic dysphagia, with a WMD of −1.262 kPa (95% CI, −8.442 to 5.918) and an SMD of −0.187 (95% CI, −1.059 to 0.686). Significant positive associations were identified between tongue pressure and grip strength and between tongue pressure and gait speed, with correlation coefficients of 0.396 (95% CI, 0.191 to 0.567) and 0.269 (95% CI, 0.015 to 0.490), respectively. Reduced tongue strength is associated with sarcopenia but is not an exclusive marker for sarcopenic dysphagia. Tongue strength correlates with the values of subcomponents that define sarcopenia. In patients with low performance of sarcopenia subcomponent, tongue pressure must be examined to diagnose subclinical dysphagia.Protocol registration: This meta-analysis was registered on INPLASY (registration number INPLASY202120060).
