The study used the SCHISM ocean model combined with the WWM III wind wave model to quantify the interaction between wind waves and tides in the coastal zone of the Changjiang River Estuary and its adjacent areas. The wave and storm surge during Typhoon Ampil, which made landfall in July 2018 in Shanghai, were simulated by using the Climate Forecast System Version 2 (CFSv2) and Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) latest reanalysis (ERA5) wind dataset from 1 July to 31 July. Model results with CFSv2 forcing show better performance in terms of significant wave height and storm surge than those with ERA5 forcing. To investigate the interactions between waves, water levels, currents, and their combined effects on significant wave and surge variations, six numerical sensitivity experiments were designed according to the different coupling methods between SCHISM and WWMIII. The research shows that in coastal areas with water depths of less than 10 m, waves are affected by water levels and currents. The differences in the effect on significant wave height between wave-tide coupling and one-way coupling with water levels and currents are negligible. Wave setup is an important physical term which cannot be ignored during the variations of storm surge caused by Typhoon Ampil. The contributions of wave set up were concentrated in coastal areas with water depths less than 10 m. The peak wave setup occurred in the Changjiang River Estuary, reaching 0.15 m. In Xiangshan Bay and Sanmen Bay, wave radiation stress makes the proportion of wave setup to the total surge reached more than 30%. The consideration of wave-tide interaction can effectively improve the accuracy of numerical wave and storm surge simulations, which can provide more accurate hindcasts of wave and storm surge variations in the Changjiang River Estuary and its adjacent coastal areas. The present study highlights the wave–tide interactions in a tide-dominant coast Versova, along the west coast of India. Versova is a macro tidal area and is home to fisheries. Model simulations are carried out to investigate wave–tide interactions with and without incorporating water level (WL) variations in the model setup. The simulation results are compared with the observed data at Versova. Model comparison with wave observation shows that the simulated significant wave height (Hs) reproduced the observed wave heights with an accuracy of scatter index = 8% and correlation = 0.94 with the inclusion of WL variations. The incorporation of WL variations created the energy modulations in the low-frequency part of the wave spectra, raising the periodical modulations in wave height. This low-frequency wave energy modulation is absent in the without WL simulations, resulting in underestimation of energy density which causes underestimation of Hs by ~1 m. Hence this study strongly suggests that water level variations must be incorporated into the wave model to accurately represent wave modulations which are significant during monsoon and extreme events in the tide-dominant coastal areas. The combined hazard of large waves occurring at an extreme high water could increase the risk of coastal flooding. Wave-tide interaction processes are known to modulate the wave climate in regions of strong tidal dynamics, yet this process is typically omitted in flood risk assessments. Here, we investigate the role of tidal dynamics in the nearshore wave climate (i.e. water depths > 10 m), with the hypothesis that larger waves occur during high water, when the risk of flooding is greater, because tidal dynamics alter the wave climate propagating into the coast. A dynamically coupled wave-tide model "COAWST" was applied to the Irish Sea for a 2-month period (January-February 2014). High water wave heights were simulated to be 20% larger in some regions, compared with an uncoupled approach, with clear implications for coastal hazards. Three model spatial resolutions were applied (1/60°, 1/120°, 1/240°), and, although all models displayed similar validation statistics, differences in the simulated tidal modulation of wave height were found (up to a 10% difference in high water wave height); therefore, sub-kilometre-scale model resolution is necessary to capture tidal flow variability and wave-tide interactions around the coast. Additionally, the effects of predicted mean sea-level rise were investigated (0.44-2.00 m to reflect likely and extreme sea-level rise by the end of the twenty-first century), showing a 5% increase in high water wave height in some areas. The wave-induced current in Haeundae, at the southeastern end of the Korean Peninsula, is one of the main causes of beach erosion. The Korean government recently initiated a beach restoration project for Haeundae beach to protect the famous beach against wave-induced currents generated by waves during summer and winter. To mitigate beach erosion, two submerged breakwaters and a sand nourishment program were initiated in 2013. With the support of the Korean government, we have also started an R&D project to develop coastal erosion control technology in order to understand the processes of beach erosion by measuring sediment transport and hydrodynamics in Haeundae coastal waters, including the development of a numerical simulation method. The aim of this study is to understand the main processes of wave-induced currents that cause erosion at Haeundae beach by considering wave and tide interactions, using a wave-current coupled model compared with long-term observed wave and current data. We found that the cross-shore current during summer is mainly caused by the eddies produced by wave-induced currents generated by strong high waves during a Typhoon approaching from the SSW and S directions. During other seasons, a longshore current is produced by swell waves coming from the E and ESE directions. In comparisons with the measured data, we also found that the wave-induced current is well simulated by a wave-tide coupled model in Haeundae with a coastal environment of wave and tide interaction. This study investigates impacts of a wave farm on waves, currents and coastal morphology adjacent to the wave farm, which is located in the Southwest of England (the Wave Hub). In this study, we focus on the interaction between waves and tides due to the presence of the wave farm and its effects on wave radiation stresses, bottom shear stresses and consequently on the sediment transport and the coast adjacent to the wave farm, using an integrated numerical modelling system. The modelling system consists of the near-shore wave model SWAN, the ocean circulation model ROMS and a sediment transport model for morphological evolution. The results show that tidal elevation and tidal currents can have a significant effect on waves and that tidal forcing and waves have a significant effect on bottom shear stresses. Waves can impact on the processes related to the bottom boundary layer and mixing intensity in the water column. The wave farm has an impact on the gradients of radiation shear stresses and bottom shear stresses that modify current speeds and wave heights, which in turn impact on the near-shore sediment transport and the resulting morphological changes. Bed load transport rates show a decrease when the wave farm is present, even during storm conditions. The results highlight the importance of the interactions between waves and tides when modelling coastal morphology with presence of wave energy devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When selecting suitable sites for tidal stream energy arrays a wide range of factors must be considered, from the magnitude of the tidal stream resource, to realistic oceanographic conditions. Previous computational and laboratory-scale investigations into the impact of waves upon tidal turbines (such as turbine blade loadings) and turbine arrays (such as array configuration) typically assume that waves propagate “ inline ” to the tidal current (waves following or waves opposing the tidal current with a 20° tolerance limit). We investigated the wave climate at typical tidal stream energy sites across the British Isles. The wave climate was simulated at 18 sites using a 7-year (2005–2011) SWAN wave model simulation of the northwest European shelf seas. The principal semi-diurnal lunar constituent (M2) was also estimated at these sites using the three-dimensional ROMS tidal model. A significant proportion of the wave climate (between 49% and 93% of the time), including extreme wave events (>10 m wave heights), was found to be propagating in a direction which was “oblique” to the major axis of tidal flow (i.e. waves which propagate at an angle to the tidal current with a 20° tolerance limit) at all 18 selected sites. Furthermore, the average “ inline ” wave climate was 2.25 m less in height and 2 s less in wave period in comparison to the oblique wave climate. To understand the direct effect of waves upon the tidal stream resource, the dynamically wave-tide coupled COAWST modelling system was applied to an idealized headland case study, which represented the typical tide and wave conditions expected at first generation tidal stream energy sites. Waves were found to alter the simulated tidal velocity profile, which, because tidal stream power is proportional to velocity cubed, reduced the theoretical resource by 10% for every metre increase in wave height ( R 2 94% with 22 degrees of freedom ) – depending upon wave period and direction. Our research indicates that wave angle should be considered when quantifying the impact of waves upon tidal turbines, such as computational fluid dynamic (CFD) studies, or laboratory-scale experiments of wake characteristics and turbine fatigue loading. Further, dynamically coupled tide-wave models may be necessary for a thorough resource assessment, since the complex wave-tide interaction affected the tidal resource; however, in situ observations of tidal velocity profiles during a range of wave events will be essential in validating such modelling approaches in the future. Few of the world's coasts are devoid of wave action, such that waves are considered as the dominant agent of coastal change at short (hours to weeks) to medium (months to years) time scales, and can act as triggers via extreme events at the meso-scale (decades). Coasts where waves are absent or where wave energy is so important as to obliterate the tidal signal are the extremes recognised as tide- and wave-dominated coasts. The rest are inevitably mixed wave-and-tide-dominated (WTD) coasts that constitute a considerable proportion of the world's coasts. This is not a new idea, but recent advances in the understanding of such mixed-influence coasts impose a reconsideration in terms of a perspective that involves process signatures, sediment transport patterns and coastal morphologies. While tides show a regular predictable temporal cycle, wave conditions generally exhibit large temporal variability expressed by irregular, but short-term/seasonal variations in energy and period. As a result, the WTD spectrum is not constant in power level and is probably very irregular, characterised by a few key spikes. Examples include the well documented moderate wave-energy micro- to meso-tidal sand barriers with frequent tidal inlets such as those of the southeastern coast of the United States, and the much less well known macro- to mega-tidal beaches and their associated nearshore storm and tide-controlled ridges and banks, such as those of the eastern English Channel.
