The mean cell density, coefficient of variation, and hexagonality of the corneal endothelial cells were determined and the results were statistically compared.Results: There were no statistically significant differences in the corneal morphology between pre and post LASIK results in each group, nor were there significant differences between the results of both groups at 3 months post LASIK.Conclusions: Both IntraLase FS60 and Ziemer Femto LDV are able to create flaps without significant adverse effects on the corneal endothelial morphology through 3 months after LASIK surgery.Keywords: LASIK, corneal endothelium, femtosecond laser, IntraLase FS60, Ziemer LDV

Abstract

Enhanced densification is observed between 1323 and 1573K during the sintering of nanometric WC powders with Si addition. Microstructural observations and thermodynamics suggest that the exothermicity of a silicidation reaction that can lead to a temperature excess of nearly 500K is probably the cause. At higher temperatures, the adiabatic heat of reaction prompts the recombination-climb of existing 1/6< > partials from the prismatic to the basal planes, resulting in sudden platelet growth by 2-D nucleation on the { } planes. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: NXY-059 has a proposed mechanism of action of free-radical trapping and has been studied in clinical trials based on positive effects seen in experimental models of acute ischaemic stroke. This study evaluated the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of NXY-059 in healthy Japanese male subjects compared with previous data from healthy Caucasian subjects. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The primary objective of this phase 1, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, dose-escalating study was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of an 8- or 24-h intravenous infusion of NXY-059 targeting an unbound plasma concentration of 25-300 micromol/L in healthy Japanese male subjects (20-45 years). NXY-059 pharmacokinetics were also assessed, and any differences in pharmacokinetics between Japanese and previously studied Caucasian subjects (20-45 years) were explored. RESULTS: NXY-059 was generally well tolerated and no safety concerns were identified. There was a similar incidence of adverse events between subjects receiving NXY-059 or placebo, and no obvious trend towards an increased incidence of adverse events with increasing doses of NXY-059 was observed. In addition, there was no evidence of any vasoirritative effects or changes in renal function. The tolerability profile was similar in Caucasian subjects. The pharmacokinetic results indicate proportional exposure of 8-h and 24-h infusions of NXY-059 resulting in mean unbound steady state plasma concentrations up to 417 micromol/L and 379 micromol/L, respectively. Plasma clearance values for NXY-059 were similar in both Japanese and Caucasian subjects. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that the tolerability and pharmacokinetics of NXY-059 in healthy Japanese male subjects and Caucasians are similar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A small study was undertaken to examine the microbiological characteristics of spent mushroom compost (SMC), which is the major waste by-product of the mushroom industry and which is regularly disposed off by application to agricultural land. The primary aim of this study was to examine SMC for the presence of faecal bacterial pathogens, including Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes. Secondly it was desirable to quantify bacterial and fungal populations within SMC, and also qualitatively identify the diversity of bacterial populations within SMC, through employment of rDNA PCR and direct sequencing techniques on the culturable microflora. Conventional microbiological analyses of SMC material (n=30) from six commercial operations in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, failed to detect Salmonella spp, Listeria spp. or Campylobacter spp. in any of the SMC material examined. Total aerobic plate counts gave a mean count of log10 7.01 colony forming units (cfu) per gram SMC material (range: log10 6.53–7.52 cfu/g). Fungal counts gave a mean count of log10 4.57 cfu per gram SMC material (range: log10 3.93–4.98 cfu/g). From a total of greater than 50 colony picks, a total of 12 bacterial morphotypes were identified and were further examined by employment of partial 16S rRNA gene amplification and sequencing techniques, yielding several genera and species, including Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella/Enterobacter sp. Microbacterium sp. Paenibacillus lentimorbus, Pseudomonas mevalonii, Sphingobacterium multivorum and Stenotrophomonas sp. This is the first preliminary report on the microbial diversity of SMC waste and demonstrates the presence of several species that have not been previously described in SMC, in addition to two potentially novel species within the genera Microbacterium and Stenotrophomonas. It is thereby important to examine the ecological microbe–microbe and plant–microbe interactions that are occurring between the native bacterial soil flora and those added annually (theoretically estimated at approximately 1018 cells) through the application of SMC. Such studies would be beneficial in helping to ascertain the ecological consequences involved in the disposal of SMC waste on agricultural land. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Three crossbred lowland ewes developed a severe purulent rhinitis and another three ewes developed a severe purulent otitis externa/media after being showered with a wash that had been used 24 to 48 hours before on a separate group of Cheviot ewes with lesions of dermatitis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated in pure growth from the aural and nasal abscesses and also from the dermatitis lesions. Extended antibiotic susceptibility testing and the random amplification of polymorphic DNA indicated that a single clonal type was associated with the rhinitis and otitis and with the dermatitis, providing strong evidence of an epidemiological link between the lesions of dermatitis and the aural and nasal abscesses through the use of the contaminated 'shower wash. 22. Effects of synthetic form of tracheal antimicrobial peptide on respiratory pathogens.

Abstract

We have synthesized a C-terminal portion of tracheal antimicrobial peptide (TAP) with 38 amino acids and tested it for efficacy on various clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains from patients with cystic fibrosis and also on Aspergillus fumigatus. Our results indicate that the synthetic TAP has both potent bactericidal and fungicidal activities and that a combination of TAP and amphotericin B showed strong additive effects of growth inhibition on A. fumigatus. These results suggest that TAP is potentially an effective therapy for Aspergillus and multi-drug-resistant Pseudomonas, pathogens that are often a serious threat to patients with cystic fibrosis. The X gene product of human hepatitis B virus (HBV) trans-activates the HBV enhancer. In order to identify domains responsive to trans-activation by the X gene, we introduced a series of mutations into the HBV enhancer and assayed the enhancer activities in the presence of the X gene product. Abstract

The energy dependence of the neutrino-iron and antineutrino-iron inclusive charged-current cross sections and their ratio have been measured using a high-statistics sample with the MINOS near detector exposed to the NuMI beam from the main injector at Fermilab. Neutrino and antineutrino fluxes were determined using a low hadronic energy subsample of charged-current events. We report measurements of ν−Fe (ν⎯⎯−Fe) cross section in the energy range 3–50 GeV (5–50 GeV) with precision of 2%–8% (3%–9%) and their ratio which is measured with precision 2%–8%. Abstract

A search for depletion of the combined flux of active neutrino species over a 735 km baseline is reported using neutral-current interaction data recorded by the MINOS detectors in the NuMI neutrino beam. Such a depletion is not expected according to conventional interpretations of neutrino oscillation data involving the three known neutrino flavors. A depletion would be a signature of oscillations or decay to postulated non-interacting "sterile" neutrinos, scenarios not ruled out by existing data. From an exposure of 3.18x10^{20} protons on target in which neutrinos of energies between ~500 MeV and 120 GeV are produced predominantly as nu_mu, the visible energy spectrum of candidate neutral-current reactions in the MINOS far detector is reconstructed. Comparison of this spectrum to that inferred from a similarly selected near detector sample shows that of the portion of the nu_mu flux observed to disappear in charged-current interaction data, the fraction that could be converting to a sterile state is less than 52% at 90% confidence level (C.L.). The hypothesis that active neutrinos mix with a single sterile neutrino via oscillations is tested by fitting the data to various models. In the particular four-neutrino models considered, the mixing angles theta_{24} and theta_{34} are constrained to be less than 11 degrees and 56 degrees at 90% C.L., respectively. The possibility that active neutrinos may decay to sterile neutrinos is also investigated. Pure neutrino decay without oscillations is ruled out at 5.4 standard deviations. For the scenario in which active neutrinos decay into sterile states concurrently with neutrino oscillations, a lower limit is established for the neutrino decay lifetime tau_3/m_3 > 2.1x10^{-12} s/eV at 90% C.L.., Physics

Abstract

Feldman is the Harvard author) The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) experiment uses an accelerator-produced neutrino beam to perform precision measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters in the "atmospheric neutrino" sector associated with muon neutrino disappearance. This long-baseline experiment measures neutrino interactions in Fermilab's NuMI neutrino beam with a near detector at Fermilab and again 735 km downstream with a far detector in the Soudan Underground Laboratory in northern Minnesota. The two detectors are magnetized steel-scintillator tracking calorimeters. They are designed to be as similar as possible in order to ensure that differences in detector response have minimal impact on the comparisons of event rates, energy spectra and topologies that are essential to MINOS measurements of oscillation parameters. (G. J. Feldman is the Harvard author) This Letter reports new results from the MINOS experiment based on a two-year exposure to muon neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Our data are consistent with quantum-mechanical oscillations of neutrino flavor with mass splitting |delta m^2|=(2.43±0.13)×10^-3 eV^2 (68% C.L.) and mixing angle (sin(2*theta))^2>0.90 (90% C.L.). Our data disfavor two alternative explanations for the disappearance of neutrinos in flight: namely, neutrino decays into lighter particles and quantum decoherence of neutrinos, at the 3.7 and 5.7 standard-deviation levels, respectively., Physics

Abstract

A search for a sidereal modulation in the MINOS near detector neutrino data was performed. If present, this signature could be a consequence of Lorentz and CPT violation as predicted by a class of extensions to the Standard Model. No evidence for a sidereal signal in the data set was found, implying that there is no significant change in neutrino propagation that depends on the direction of the neutrino beam in a sun-centered inertial frame. Upper limits on the magnitudes of the Lorentz and CPT violating terms in these extensions to the Standard Model lie between 0.01-1% of the maximum expected, assuming a suppression of these signatures by factor of 10^-17., Physics

Abstract

(G. J. Feldman is the Harvard author) We report the first detailed comparisons of the rates and spectra of neutral-current neutrino interactions at two widely separated locations. A depletion in the rate at the far site would indicate mixing between muon neutirnos and a sterile particle. No anomalous depletion in the reconstructed energy spectrum is observed. Assuming oscillations occur at a single mass-squared splitting, a fit to the neutral- and charged-current energy spectra limits the fraction of muon neutrino oscillating to a sterile neutrino to be below 0.68 at 90% confidence level. A less stringent limit due to a possible contribution to the measured neutral-current event rate at the far site from electron neutrino appearance at the current experimental limit is also presented., Physics
