Abstract Species assemblage composition of marine microfossils offers the possibility to investigate ecological and climatological change on time scales inaccessible using conventional observations. Planktonic foraminifera - calcareous zooplankton - have an excellent fossil record and are used extensively in palaeoecology and palaeoceanography. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 19,000 – 23,000 years ago), the climate was in a radically different state. This period is therefore a key target to investigate climate and biodiversity under different conditions than today. Studying LGM climate and ecosystems indeed has a long history, yet the most recent global synthesis of planktonic foraminifera assemblage composition is now nearly two decades old. Here we present the ForCenS-LGM dataset with 2,365 species assemblage samples collected using standardised methods and with harmonised taxonomy. The data originate from marine sediments from 664 sites and present a more than 50% increase in coverage compared to previous work. The taxonomy is compatible with the most recent global core top dataset, enabling direct investigation of temporal changes in foraminifera biogeography and facilitating seawater temperature reconstructions.

In the 1960s and 1970s Werner Fuchs of the Austrian Geological Survey (Vienna) described a significant number of new foraminiferal taxa that he considered ancestral to the planktonic foraminifera. All these taxa are well-curated in the collections of the Austrian Geological Survey and have been studied by one of us (Malcolm B. Hart). Some of these taxa, from the Triassic and lowermost Jurassic strata of Austria and northern Italy, are poorly preserved, possibly the result of having an original aragonitic wall structure. None of these taxa possess characters which give the appearance of a planktonic mode of life, although some of them (e.g. Oberhauserella, Praegubkinella) may well have been ancestral to the holoplanktonic foraminifera that appeared in the Toarcian and younger strata. Other taxa in the collections of the Austrian Geological Survey (part of GeoSphere Austria), from the Jurassic of Poland, are preserved as glauconitic steinkerns and are either unidentifiable as foraminifera or suspect in terms of their stratigraphical and evolutionary significance.

Background: The association between Body Mass Index (BMI) and clinical outcomes following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remains controversial. Our objective was to investigate the real-world relationship between BMI and in-hospital clinical course and mortality, in patients who underwent CABG.Methods: A sampled cohort of patients who underwent CABG between October 2015 and December 2016 was identified in the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database. Outcomes of interest included in-hospital mortality, peri-procedural complications and length of stay. Patients were divided into 6 BMI (kg/m2) subgroups; (1) under-weight ≤19, (2) normal-weight 20–25, (3) over-weight 26–30, (4) obese I 31–35, (5) obese II 36–39, and (6) extremely obese ≥40. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify predictors of in-hospital mortality. Linear regression model was used to identify predictors of length of stay (LOS).Results: An estimated total of 48,710 hospitalizations for CABG across the U.S. were analyzed. The crude data showed a U-shaped relationship between BMI and study population outcomes with higher mortality and longer LOS in patients with BMI ≤ 19 kg/m2 and in patients with BMI ≥40 kg/m2 compared to patients with BMI 20–39 kg/m2. In the multivariable regression model, BMI subgroups of ≤19 kg/m2 and ≥40 kg/m2 were found to be independent predictors of mortality.Conclusions: A complex, U-shaped relationship between BMI and mortality was documented, confirming the “obesity paradox” in the real-world setting, in patients hospitalized for CABG.

The Christian Malford lagerstätte in the Oxford Clay Formation of Wiltshire contains exceptionally well-preserved squid-like cephalopods, including Belemnotheutis antiquus (Pearce). Some of these fossils preserve muscle tissue, contents of ink sacks and other soft parts of the squid, including arms with hooks in situ and the head area with statoliths (ear bones) present in life position. The preservation of soft-tissue material is usually taken as an indication of anoxic or dysaerobic conditions on the sea floor and within the enclosing sediments. Interestingly, in the prepared residues of all these sediments there are both statoliths and arm hooks as well as abundant, species-rich, assemblages of both foraminifera and ostracods. Such occurrences appear to be incompatible with an interpretation of potential sea floor anoxia. The mudstones of the Oxford Clay Formation may have been compacted by 70 %–80 % during de-watering and burial, and in such a fine-grained lithology samples collected for microfossil examination probably represent several thousand years and, therefore, a significant number of foraminiferal life cycles. Such samples (even if only 1–2 cm thick) could, potentially, include several oxic–anoxic cycles and, if coupled with compaction, generate the apparent coincidence of well-preserved, soft-bodied, cephalopods and diverse assemblages of benthic foraminifera.

The aragonite shell-bearing thecosome pteropods are an important component of the oceanic plankton. However, with increasing pCO2 and the associated reduction in oceanic pH (ocean acidification), thecosome pteropods are thought to be particularly vulnerable to shell dissolution. The distribution and preservation of pteropods over the last 250 000 years have been investigated in marine sediment cores from the Caribbean Sea close to the island of Montserrat. Using the Limacina Dissolution Index (LDX), fluctuations in pteropod calcification through the most recent glacial/interglacial cycles are documented. By comparison to the oxygen isotope record (global ice volume), we show that pteropod calcification is closely linked to global changes in pCO2 and pH and is, therefore, a global signal. These data are in agreement with the findings of experiments upon living pteropods, which show that variations in pH can greatly affect aragonitic shells. The results of this study provide information which may be useful in the prediction of future changes to the pteropod assemblage caused by ocean acidification.

Heart failure is the most common cause of hospitalization in the United States. Just as the prevalence of heart failure has increased, the number of diseases identified that result in the heart failure syndrome has escalated. Certain cardiomyopathies that have previously been regarded as very rare are being recognized with increasing frequency, because of improved imaging techniques and an increased understanding of the pathophysiologic mechanisms that result in these diseases. Improved echocardiographic techniques and methods such as spectral Doppler and 3D image rendering, along with the use of advanced diagnostic tools such as cardiac CT angiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging are now common. These advanced imaging methods have led to an increased appreciation of the frequency of diseases such as isolated left ventricular noncompaction and cardiac amyloidosis. Left ventricular noncompaction, once thought to occur in roughly one in one million patients, may actually be seen in fewer than one in 1000 patients. Cardiac amyloidosis, in the senile form, may exist in 80% of 80-year-old patients, although the incidence of clinical symptoms is less. As the genetic alterations that contribute to these diseases are further elucidated, improved diagnosis and a better understanding of the prognosis of these uncommon cardiomyopathies will follow.

Transplantation of cardiomyocytes into the heart is a potential treatment for replacing damaged cardiac muscle. To investigate the feasibility and efficiency of this technique, either a cardiac-derived cell line (HL-1 cells), or normal fetal or neonatal pig cardiomyocytes were grafted into a porcine model of myocardial infarction. The myocardial infarction was created by the placement of an embolization coil in the distal portion of the left anterior descending artery in Yorkshire pigs (n = 9). Four to 5 wk after creation of an infarct, the three preparations of cardiomyocytes were grafted, at 1 × 10 6 cells/20 μL into normal and into the middle of the infarcted myocardium. The hearts were harvested and processed for histologic examinations 4 to 5 wk after the cell grafts. Histologic evaluation of the graft sites demonstrated that HL-1 cells and fetal pig cardiomyocytes formed stable grafts within the normal myocardium without any detrimental effect including arrhythmia. In addition, a marked increase in angiogenesis was observed both within the grafts and adjacent host myocardium. Electron microscopy studies demonstrated that fetal pig cardiomyocytes and the host myocardial cells were coupled with adherens-type junctions and gap junctions. Histologic examination of graft sites from infarct tissue failed to show the presence of grafted HL-1 cells, fetal, or neonatal pig cardiomyocytes. Cardiomyocyte transplantation may provide the potential means for cell-mediated gene therapy for introduction of therapeutic molecules into the heart.

Growth, carcass characteristics and meat quality of the steer and heifer progeny of autumn (AC: March–April) and winter (WC: June–July) calving cows following weaning in January in each of 3 years (2003–05) were measured. The cows were mated to sires with a high estimated breeding value for either retail beef yield (RBY), intramuscular fat (IMF) or both RBY and IMF. After weaning, the progeny entered one of three growth paths until slaughter at an average steer liveweight of 500 kg: (i) fast – fast growth from weaning on a high concentrate feedlot diet; (ii) slow – slow growth from weaning (~0.6 kg/day) to 400 kg liveweight followed by growth at over 1 kg/day on high quality pasture; or (iii) comp. – 10% weaning weight loss, immediately after weaning followed by compensatory or rapid growth of over 1 kg/day on high quality pasture. Steers on the fast growth path had higher (P< 0.001) P8 fat thickness than those on the slow or comp. growth paths whereas heifers on the fast growth path only had higher (P< 0.001) P8 fat thickness than those on the slow growth path. Animals on the fast growth treatment had higher (P< 0.001) levels of IMF% than the slow animals which were higher (P< 0.001) than the comp. growth treatment. AUS-MEAT and US marbling scores were not different among growth paths. Animals finished on the fast growth path had a lower (P< 0.001) RBY% than those on either the slow or comp. growth paths. The RBY-sired progeny had higher (P< 0.001) finishing liveweight and hot standard carcass weight than either RBY and IMF or IMF-sired animals. IMF-sired progeny had higher (P< 0.01) rib fat thickness than either RBY or RBY- and IMF-sired animals. There was also a similar trend for P8 fat thickness but the effects were not significant. The RBY-sired animals had lower AUS-MEAT marbling scores (P< 0.01), US marbling scores (P< 0.001) and levels of IMF% (P< 0.01) than either of the other two sire treatments. RBY-sired animals also had higher (P< 0.001) estimated RBY% than those from the IMF sires while those by RBY and IMF sires were intermediate and not significantly different from either. Calving time had little influence on most carcass characteristics. However, WC animals tended to be fatter and have higher marbling scores than AC animals. The IMF% was higher (P< 0.01) in WC animals from RBY and IMF sires than in the corresponding AC animals. Heifers had lighter slaughter liveweight, carcass weight, were fatter and had higher marbling scores than steers. Heifers also had lower (P< 0.001) RBY% than the steers. Ossification scores for heifers were higher (P< 0.001) than for steers by ~30 units in AC calves and by 20 units in WC calves. The results of this experiment confirm the effectiveness of using sires with high estimated breeding value for the required characteristics in producing the desired improvements in the progeny. The absence of any interactions of sire type with growth path indicates that differences between sire types will be similar regardless of environmental conditions. Animals raised on a faster growth path after weaning produce carcasses with more fat and more IMF% than those grown on slower growth paths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
