The problem of 3D gaze estimation can be viewed as inferring the visual axes from eye images. It remains a challenge especially for the head-mounted gaze tracker (HMGT) with a simple camera setup due to the complexity of the human visual system. Although the mainstream regression-based methods could establish the mapping relationship between eye image features and the gaze point to calculate the visual axes, it may lead to inadequate fitting performance and appreciable extrapolation errors. Moreover, regression-based methods suffer from a degraded user experience because of the increased burden in recalibration procedures when slippage occurs between HMGT and head. To address these issues, a high-accuracy 3D gaze estimation method along with an efficient recalibration approach is proposed with head pose tracking in this paper. The two key parameters, eyeball center and camera optical center, are estimated in head frame with geometry-based method, so that a mapping relationship between two direction features is proposed to calculate the direction of the visual axis. As the direction features are formulated with the accurately estimated parameters, the complexity of mapping relationship could be reduced and a better fitting performance can be achieved. To prevent the noticeable extrapolation errors, direction features with uniform angular intervals for fitting the mapping are retrieved over human's field of view. Additionally, an efficient single-point recalibration method is proposed with an updated eyeball coordinate system, which reduces the burden of calibration procedures significantly. Our experiment results show that the calibration and recalibration methods could improve the gaze estimation accuracy by 35 percent (from a mean error of 2.00 degrees to 1.31 degrees) and 30 percent (from a mean error of 2.00 degrees to 1.41 degrees), respectively, compared with the state-of-the-art methods. AIM: To evaluate the centration of the SBL-3 multifocal intraocular lens, the size of the distant and near power zone in the pupil area and the area of the visual axis using Itrace visual function analyzer. METHODS: Retrospective case study. From January 2018 to January 2019, 51 eyes of 36 patients underwent phacoemulsification cataract combined with regional refraction multifocal intraocular lens implantation at Beijing Aier-Intech Eye Hospital were enrolled. The centration, visual axis, angle α, angle Kappa and the orientation of the intraocular lens measured by Itrace were used to calculate the position of the visual axis in the intraocular lens and the changes in the proportions of the distant and near power zones in the pupil area. RESULTS: The centration(R)of intraocular lens is 0.217±0.09mm. The distribution of the visual axis in the intraocular lens is 0.217±0.09mm. The visual axis is evenly distributed in the distant and near power zones. There was no statistical significance between the two groups with postoperative visual acuity ≥0.8 and 0.05). The size of the angle Kappa is 0.187±0.079mm. The displacement of angle Kappa on the y-axis is 0.10±0.06mm. There was no statistical significance between the changes in the pupil size of distant and near power zones in the pupil area caused by the deviation of the pupil and the postoperative visual acuity ≥0.8 and 0.05). CONCLUSION: The intraocular lens centration and axial data measured by the Itrace visual function analyzer can be used to estimate the area where the visual axis is located and the size of the distant and near power zones in the pupil area, thereby assisting in evaluating the postoperative visual quality of the regional refraction multifocal intraocular lens implanted after cataract surgery.

The perception of individuals to the urban scenes at night is different from that of the day. The previous studies dealt with the subject of the night scene in terms of the effect of artificial lighting in the formation of the night scene and its ability to increase the quality and aesthetics of the scene that designed for night use, but this research deals with other factors. The research problem show itself as: There is a difference in the perception of the viewer at night during the day, where some scenes attract people at night while not attracted by the day and vice versa, while other scenes attract individuals day and night. regardless of the type and efficiency of the lighting used. And the aim of the research, is to study the impact of those characteristics at night where as the people perception differs in the night. The research assumed: the perception of night scene changes according to that visual axes, and the most influential factor in this change is the attraction that result from the presence of a land mark in the axis of motion that changes the characteristics of the visual axis between night and day. And between nightscape and another. The importance of research: is to determine the characteristics that make the scene acceptable to individuals through day and night, and limit some recommendations to hire those characteristics in order to increase the vitality of the urban environment and increase the efficiency of use. In order to achieve this, the research based on a methodology consist of a theoretical base include the explanation of concepts like (urban scene, night scene, visual perception, visual axis) in order to achieve this the research adapt the semantic measurement to measure the people perception of the scene, during the night and day periods of the same scenes, and then compare the results to analyze the differences between them and explore the reasons behind it. Research has found that the characteristics of the axis differ in terms of their impact on the people attraction, as the emergence of the landmarks at the end of the visual axis is the most influential attraction element to people at night. In the night scene people need to see the land marks in compared to the other elements to be able to complete their journey. And that people do not care about the start points as the end points in the journey, in the night compared to the daytime.

To evaluate two transducer and needle handling methods, along the visual axis (AL) and across the visual axis (AC), in non-skilled and skilled clinicians. Prospective randomized crossover study. A total of 26 students with no ultrasound locoregional anaesthesia experience (non-skilled group) and six clinicians experienced and familiar with ultrasound locoregional anaesthesia (skilled group) were enrolled. The non-skilled group was asked to perform two tasks: the first on a phantom and the second on canine cadavers, whilst the skilled group performed only the second task. The tasks consisted of guiding the tip of the needle to a target point (simulated nerve on the jelly phantom and sciatic nerve on the cadavers) using two different methods of needle handling—AL or AC. All operators performed each task three times for each method. The time to drive the needle to the target for the two methods was analysed with a paired Student t test, and the number of times the needle was not visualized on the screen between the groups was compared using an unpaired Student t test. Data are presented as mean ± standard deviation. Value of p < 0.05 was considered significant. The AL method, compared with the AC method, resulted in shorter performance time in both skilled (9 ± 5 versus 20 ± 8 seconds for the second task) and non-skilled groups (9 ± 8 versus 17 ± 15 seconds for the first task and 18 ± 11 versus 32 ± 26 seconds for the second task). In both groups, the AL method significantly reduced the time to complete the task. This study aims to describe a new universal method to identify the relative three-dimensional directions of visual, pupillary, and optical axes of the eye and the angles between them using topography elevation data. The method was validated in a large clinical cohort, and ethnical differences were recorded. Topography elevation data were collected from 1992 normal eyes of 966 healthy participants in Italy, Brazil, and China. The three main axes were defined as follows: optical axis (OA) was defined as the optimal path of light that passes through the ocular system without refraction. The pupillary axis (PA) line was defined using X and Y coordinates of the pupil centre with the chamber depth, in addition to the centre of a sphere fitted to the central 3 mm diameter of the cornea. The visual axis (VA) was taken by its best approximation, the coaxially sighted corneal light reflex. The alpha angle was measured between the VA and OA, and the kappa angle between the VA and PA. The average values of kappa and alpha angles were 3.41 ± 2.84 and 6.04 ± 2.43 in the Italian population, 2.6 ± 1.53 and 5.87 ± 2.3 in the Brazilian population, and 2.09 ± 1.22 and 3.85 ± 1.48 in the Chinese population.

Purpose: To identify the relative positions of geometrical and visual axes of the eye and present a method to locate the visual center when the geometrical axis is taken as a reference. Methods: Topography elevation data was collected using a Pentacam HR ® topographer from 2040 normal eyes of 1020 healthy participants in Brazil, China and Italy. A three-dimensional, rotation algorithm, a first-order Zernike polynomial fit and a nonlinear least-squares error function was used within an optimization function to locate the geometrical axis and the visual center of each eye. Results: The right eyes of participants were significantly more tilted than left eyes throughout the topography scanning process (p < 0.001). The visual centers were always located in the nasal-superior quadrant, although the visual centers of fellow eyes were not symmetrically located. Mean distances between the visual center and the geometrical center in right eyes were 0.8 ± 0.29 mm, 0.56 ± 0.18 mm and 0.91 ± 0.34 mm among Brazilian, Chinese and Italian participants, respectively, and located at angular positions of 38.7 ± 24.5°, 23.0 ± 29.8° and 23.1 ± 28.1° from the nasal side. However, in left eyes, mean distances were 0.76 ± 0.33 mm, 0.45 ± 0.12 mm and 0.75 ± 0.33 mm at polar angles from the nasal side of 59.3 ± 29.0°, 50.6 ± 44.5° and 61.8 ± 34.1°, respectively. Conclusions: Fellow eyes do not perform similarly during the fixation process, with right eyes tending to tilt more than left eyes, and the visual centers of the fellow eyes positioned differently relative to the geometrical centers. Purpose To locate the visual axis of the eye objectively. Method Based on three-beam scanning laser radar microprofilometry, a technique is proposed to objectively locate the visual axis of the eye. The laser beam consists of three components, two of them being shifted relatively to the central one by differing frequencies, filtered in spatially orthogonal directions. The centre of the foveola is defined as the crossing of steepest inclinations determined in the specific beam positions on the trajectory of scanning. The position of the cornea crossing by the visual axis is designated by the optical axis of the measuring instrument. Results Nanometer sensitivity was confirmed in a preliminary test. Conclusions The proposed technique can be incorporated into any clinical wavefront sensing instrument and can be used for centration-sensitive vision correction, as well as for other instances when knowing the exact position of the fovea is important. We present the case of a 5 year old patient who comes to the II Clinic of Ophthalmology of „Prof. Nicolae Oblu” Clinical Emergency Hospital of Iaşi for correction of the right total unilateral palpebral ptosis Right Eye, 6 months after a palpebral trauma with a sharp object that sectioned a part of the orbicular muscle fibers and the levator muscle of the right upper lid. We mention that the surgical treatment performed was the correction of the palpebral ptosis, by shortening the upper lid levator muscle and reinsertion at its aponeurosis, considering the achievement of a functional and esthetic result. The reducing of the grade IV palpebral ptosis to grade II – I was aimed, letting free the visual axis.

Angle kappa is the difference between the pupillary and visual axis. This measurement is of paramount consideration in refractive surgery, as proper centration is required for optimal results. Angle kappa may contribute to MFIOL decentration and its resultant photic phenomena. Adjusting placement of MFIOLs for angle kappa is not supported by the literature but is likely to help reduce glare and haloes. Centering LASIK in angle kappa patients over the corneal light reflex is safe, efficacious, and recommended. Centering in-between the corneal reflex and the entrance pupil is also safe and efficacious. The literature regarding PRK in patients with an angle kappa is sparse but centering on the corneal reflex is assumed to be similar to centering LASIK on the corneal reflex. Thus, centration of MFIOLs, LASIK, and PRK should be focused on the corneal reflex for patients with a large angle kappa. More research is needed to guide surgeons′ approach to angle kappa.

In teleosts, the area of peak ganglion cell density in the retina (area centralis, AC) is thought to reflect the primary visual axis for feeding. The bluegill Lepomis macrochirus are known to undergo ontogenetic shifts in diet preference, but because their diet is affected by population density, interspecific competition, and seasonal changes in prey availability, they are considered generalist predators. We investigated whether the diet shifts of the bluegill were associated with a change in the location of the AC (total length of fish specimens, range 44-243 mm). The AC was located temporally in the retina of smaller fish (40-100 mm), and the area of increased density included the ventral and central regions of the retina. Conversely, the AC was located in the dorso-temporal region of the retina in larger (100-200 mm) fish. Lastly, in the largest bluegill (> 200 mm), the AC was located in the temporal region of the retina. A novel automated method to measure eye misalignment in infants is presented. The method uses estimates of the Hirschberg ratio (HR) and angle Kappa (the angle between the visual and optical axis) for each infant to calculate the angle of eye misalignment. The HR and angle Kappa are estimated automatically from measurements of the direction of the optical axis and the coordinates of the center of the entrance pupil and corneal reflexes in each eye when infants look at a set of images that are presented sequentially on a computer monitor. The HR is determined by the slope of the line that describes the direction of the optical axis as a function of the distance between the center of the entrance pupil and the corneal reflexes. The peak of the distribution of possible angles Kappa during the image presentation determines the value of angle Kappa. Experiments with five infants showed that the 95% limits of agreement between repeated measurements of angle Kappa are \pm 0.61^\circ. The maximum error in the estimation of eye alignment in orthotropic infants was 0.9^\circ with 95% limits of agreement between repeated measurements of 0.75^\circ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gaze estimation systems use calibration procedures to estimate subject-specific parameters that are needed for the calculation of the point-of-gaze. In these procedures, subjects are required to fixate on a specific point or points in space at specific time instances. Advanced remote gaze estimation systems can estimate the optical axis of the eye without any personal calibration procedure, but use a single calibration point to estimate the angle between the optical axis and the visual axis (line-of-gaze). This paper presents a novel calibration procedure that does not require active user participation. To estimate the angles between the optical and visual axes of each eye, this procedure minimizes the distance between the intersections of the visual axes of the left and right eyes with one or more observation surfaces (displays) while subjects look naturally at these displays (e.g., watching a video clip). Theoretical analysis and computer simulations show that the performance of the proposed procedure improves when the range of angles between the visual axes and vectors normal to the observation surfaces increases. The visual axis of the eye has been defined in terms of nodal points. However, astigmatic systems usually do not have nodal points. The purpose of this note is to offer a modified definition of visual axes that is in terms of nodal rays instead of nodal points and to show how to locate them from knowledge of the structure of the eye. A pair of visual axes (internal and external) is defined for each eye. The visual axes then become well defined in linear optics for eyes whether or not they are astigmatic or have decentred elements. To understand the mechanism of the behavioral response in the capture process of how fish recognize fishing gear and then how they can avoid the gear, the visual acuity of Pacific saury Cololabis saira was investigated by histological examination of the retina of individuals in the size range of 75–365 mm fork length (FL). The contour map of cone density distribution shows that the highest cone density is located in the temporal area of the retina, which indicated the visual axis as the forward direction. The visual acuity (VA) depends both on the focal length of the lens and the number of cones in the retina. The lens diameter increased linearly from 1.40 to 4.73 mm with fish growth, while the cone density decreased gradually from 765 to 378 cells/0.01 mm2. Our results show that the visual acuity increases proportionately from 0.057 to 0.140 for individuals ranging in FL from 75 to 365 mm as expressed by the equation VA = 0.0065 × FL0.5271 ( r2 = 0.9624). The visual acuity, visual axis and visual accommodation of pointhead flounder, slime flounder, and red halibut were determined to obtain basic knowledge for developing appropriate fishing gear and fishing methods for sustainable fisheries. Each of these species has a different ecotype in terms of habitat, depth and prey species. Thus, it was hypothesized that they may differ in terms of visual acuity, visual axis and visual accommodation. Few studies have compared these characters in flatfishes from different ecotypes. We used histological methods to determine visual acuity (i.e. cone cell density) and visual axis (i.e. cone cell distribution) in each of these species. The maximum visual acuity was 0.127 in pointhead flounder (total length, TL 344 mm), 0.092 in slime flounder (TL 372 mm) and 0.109 in red halibut (TL 336 mm). Based on the cone cell distribution in the retina, the visual axis was upward and forward in pointhead flounder, forward and downward in slime flounder, and downward in red halibut. Finally, the mean angle of lens movement was −2° in pointhead flounder, −13° in slime flounder and −32° in red halibut. This measurement of lens movement indicated that the average near-point distance was 0.87 × TL in pointhead flounder, 0.65 × TL in slime flounder and 1.02 × TL in red halibut. In the past years, research in eye tracking development and applications has attracted much attention and the possibility of interacting with a computer employing just gaze information is becoming more and more feasible. Efforts in eye tracking cover a broad spectrum of fields, system mathematical modeling being an important aspect in this research. Expressions relating to several elements and variables of the gaze tracker would lead to establish geometric relations and to find out symmetrical behaviors of the human eye when looking at a screen. To this end a deep knowledge of projective geometry as well as eye physiology and kinematics are basic. This paper presents a model for a bright-pupil technique tracker fully based on realistic parameters describing the system elements. The system so modeled is superior to that obtained with generic expressions based on linear or quadratic expressions. Moreover, model symmetry knowledge leads to more effective and simpler calibration strategies, resulting in just two calibration points needed to fit the optical axis and only three points to adjust the visual axis. Phakometric measurements of corneal and crystalline lens surface alignment are influenced by corneal asymmetry in which the corneal apex does not coincide with the limbal centre. The purpose of this study was to determine the horizontal separation ( e) between these corneal landmarks. Measurements were made in 60 normal eyes (30 subjects) using the Orbscan IIz corneal analysis workstation. Our results show that both corneal landmarks typically coincide, so that e = 0, but that inter-subject variations of about ±1 mm can be expected (so that the corneal apex may fall nasal or temporal to the visual axis). This suggests that no correction for corneal asymmetry is required when estimating average amounts of ocular alignment from samples of eyes but that the measurement of e is strongly recommended for measurements in individual eyes. Abstract Previous studies have reported good intraobserver and interobserver repeatability of anterior chamber angle (ACA) assessment using the Anterior Eye Segment analysis system, EAS-1000[sup ®] . This study investigated the influence of fixation pattern, corneal plotting method and camera position on ACA measurements. A Nidek EAS-1000[sup ®] system was employed for image acquisition and analysis, to obtain measurements of ACA. Twenty-five young healthy subjects participated. The ACAs were different in different quadrants and using different corneal plotting methods (Repeated measures 3-way anova, p < 0.05). However, the difference was <5° and therefore not clinically significant. Alignment along the visual axis or optical axis did not yield any significant difference. Repeatability was improved by asking the subjects to fixate at the flashing light-emitting diode (LED). Temporal and nasal angles also demonstrated better repeatability than vertical angles. In measuring the vertical angles, the camera can be set at either the temporal or nasal side (Paired t -test, p > 0.05). The Anterior Eye Segment analysis system has good clinical repeatability in measuring ACA. It can be further improved with the use of the flashing LED during image acquisition. The development of neural cell topography in the retinal ganglion cell layer was examined in a teleost, the black bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri). From Nissl-stained wholemounts, it was established that fish between 10 and 15 mm standard body length (SL) possess high cell densities throughout the dorso-temporal retinal quadrant, with peak cell densities located in temporal regions of the retina. However, in fish between 15 and 80 mm SL, a wide variation in the position of the peak cell density is revealed with the locations of the areae centrales (AC) ranging from exclusively temporal to periphero-dorsal retina. Fish larger than 80 mm SL always possess an AC located in the dorsal region of the dorso-temporal retinal quadrant. The topography of ganglion cells within the ganglion cell layer was determined by comparing the numbers of ganglion cells retrogradely-labeled from the optic nerve with the total population of Nissl-stained neurons (ganglion plus displaced amacrine cells) in a range of different-sized individuals. Ganglion cell topography was the same as that recorded for all Nissl-stained neurons. The feeding behavior of juveniles from metamorphosis to 80 mm SL was observed, where fish were given the choice of feeding on live food in mid-water (until 15 mm SL) or obtaining pellets from the surface or the bottom. A range of feeding patterns was recorded, with the smallest fish taking food from mid-water but individuals between 15 and 80 mm SL taking food either from the surface or the bottom or both. A correlation between the preferred mode of feeding and the position of the AC was found, such that those individuals feeding in mid-water or at the surface possess a temporal or intermediate (dorso- temporal) AC, whereas those predominantly feeding from the bottom possess a dorsal AC.Copyright © 2000 S. Twenty-nine pigmented offspring of an innately esotropic female cat exhibited varying deficits in the number of binocular cells recorded in area 17 of the visual cortex as compared to 12 normal cats. Misalignment of the two eyes in these cats was found in the awake as well as in the paralysed state. Pupillography combined with measurements of visual disparity yielded abnormal esotropia of up to 8.4° under paralysis, which corresponds to an abnormal convergence of the freely moving eyes of up to 14° (average 7.4°). In the majority of animals cortical binocularity was found reduced by the two eyes controlling independent sets of separate units (U-shaped ocular dominance distribution) whereas in 7 cats the reduction was due to a partial loss of one eye's influence. The proportion of monocular units correlated with the degree of crossover of the visual axes (r = 0.73). Anatomical investigation of the retinofugal projections revealed normal appearance in three previously recorded cats in which more than 50% of cortical units had been monocularly driven. The small angles of esotropia and the 'normal' appearance of eye position judged by the pupillary positions in the orbit of these cats, might suggest that we found an animal model for microstrabismus. This study aims to describe a new universal method to identify the relative three-dimensional directions of visual, pupillary, and optical axes of the eye and the angles between them using topography elevation data. The method was validated in a large clinical cohort, and ethnical differences were recorded. Topography elevation data were collected from 1992 normal eyes of 966 healthy participants in Italy, Brazil, and China. The three main axes were defined as follows: optical axis (OA) was defined as the optimal path of light that passes through the ocular system without refraction. The pupillary axis (PA) line was defined using X and Y coordinates of the pupil centre with the chamber depth, in addition to the centre of a sphere fitted to the central 3 mm diameter of the cornea. The visual axis (VA) was taken by its best approximation, the coaxially sighted corneal light reflex. The alpha angle was measured between the VA and OA, and the kappa angle between the VA and PA. The average values of kappa and alpha angles were 3.41 ± 2.84 and 6.04 ± 2.43 in the Italian population, 2.6 ± 1.53 and 5.87 ± 2.3 in the Brazilian population, and 2.09 ± 1.22 and 3.85 ± 1.48 in the Chinese population. The article discusses a study which determined the developmental changes in the cone density distribution, visual axis and minimum separable angle of cones during growth of juvenile Pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis. The study used specimens of Pacific bluefin tuna from six stages that were full-cycle cultured during 2003-2004 in the Fisheries Laboratory, Kinki University in Wakayama, Japan. The study showed that the region of maximum cone density, that is, the area centralis, gradually developed in the ventro-temporal area with growth during the first 80 days after hatching.
