Abstract

Thermal diffusivity and optical absorption have been investigated for porous silicon, at room temperature, using photoacoustic spectroscopy. The experimental results obtained conform well with the existing studies recently published. The value obtained for thermal diffusivity is 0.045 ± 0.002 cm²/s.The absorption onsets show energy structures, differing from the ordinary semiconductor of bulk type.

Abstract

The electronic properties and the optical absorption of lead iodide (PbI[sub 2]) have been investigated experimentally by means of optical absorption and spectroscopic ellipsometry, and theoretically by a full-potential linear muffin-tin-orbital method. PbI[sub 2] has been recognized as a very promising detector material with a large technological applicability. Its band-gap energy as a function of temperature has also been measured by optical absorption. The temperature dependence has been fitted by two different relations, and a discussion of these fittings is given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Excitation to the 1 s 2 s 2 p 3 p configuration in Mg III has been studied with optical spectrometry in the Mg-He collision from 15 to 75 keV. The results are discussed and compared with the theory of Barat and Lichten, which predicts no such excitation. A possible explanation by Coulomb excitation is given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

30. Electromagnetic losses in a three-phase high temperature superconducting cable determined by calorimetric measurements

Abstract

A 10 m long high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable conductor was placed in a plane three-phase arrangement. The test-bed enabled us to study the conductor losses for different separations between the phases. The superconductor was fixed symmetrically in the centre, whilst the two outer conventional phases (600 mm2 Cu) could be moved in the plane. It was possible to vary the inter-phase distance (centre to centre distance) from 9 to 48 cm. The HTS cable conductor was placed in a stainless steel cryostat and cooled with flowing liquid nitrogen (LN2). The losses were determined using a calorimetric technique where the temperature increase in the flowing LN2 was measured with a set of thermo-couples. Results indicate that the total AC loss increases significantly when the separation between the conductors is reduced. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
