Recent work has indicated that atmospheric radiative heating reduces the kinetic energy of large‐scale eddies in the midlatitudes. However, a physical mechanism that connects radiation to the midlatitude eddy kinetic energy is still uncertain. Using a high‐resolution general circulation model we perform an experiment in which the radiative cooling profile at each model time step is overwritten with the climatological mean, computed from a control simulation. This approach separates the mean and transient effects of radiative heating on the extratropical circulation. We find that, when radiative heating is fixed, the globally‐averaged eddy kinetic energy is enhanced by ∼6%. We show that thermal radiation dampens temperature anomalies near the surface and tropopause in low‐pressure systems, destroying eddy available potential energy and eddy kinetic energy. We identify this as a possible mechanism by which atmospheric radiative heating weakens midlatitude cyclones. Plain Language Summary: The atmosphere can be differentially heated through the absorption of visible and infrared radiation by water vapor and clouds. This process of radiative heating is thought to promote the formation of tropical cyclones, but its impact on midlatitude cyclones—storms characterized by the passage of warm and cold fronts—is less clear. Here we show that, unlike tropical cyclones, radiative heating weakens midlatitude storms. We argue that radiative cooling in the warm sector, and radiative heating in the cold sector of midlatitude cyclones, reduces the temperature gradient which is critical for the development of these weather systems. This study underscores an essential difference between tropical and midlatitude storms: in the tropics, temperature gradients are small, but at higher latitudes, temperature gradients are the drivers of storm formation. Global-mean surface temperature rapidly increased 0.29 ± 0.04 K from 2022 to 2023. Such a large interannual global warming spike is not unprecedented in the observational record, with a previous instance occurring in 1976–1977. However, why such large global warming spikes occur is unknown, and the rapid global warming of 2023 has led to concerns that it could have been externally driven. Here we show that climate models that are subject only to internal variability can generate such spikes, but they are an uncommon occurrence (p = 1.6 % ± 0.1 %). However, when a prolonged La Niña immediately precedes an El Niño in the simulations, as occurred in nature in 1976–1977 and 2022–2023, such spikes become much more common (p = 10.3 % ± 0.4 %). Furthermore, we find that nearly all simulated spikes (p = 88.5 % ± 0.3 %) are associated with El Niño occurring that year. Thus, our results underscore the importance of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation in driving the occurrence of global warming spikes such as the one in 2023, without needing to invoke anthropogenic forcing, such as changes in atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases or aerosols, as an explanation. Projections of future tropical cyclone frequency are uncertain, ranging from a slight increase to a considerable decrease according to climate models. Estimation of how much the Earth's surface temperature warms in response to greenhouse gas increase, quantified by effective climate sensitivity, is also uncertain. These two uncertainties have historically been studied independently as they concern different scales: One quantifies the extreme weather and the other the mean climate. Here, we show that these two uncertainties are not independent and are both influenced by the response of tropical clouds to warming. Across climate models, we show an anticorrelation between shortwave cloud radiative feedback and changes in the frequency of seed vortices, a prevalent type of tropical cyclone precursors. We further show an anticorrelation between effective climate sensitivity and tropical cyclone frequency changes, suggesting that global tropical cyclone frequency tends to decrease more substantially in models with larger temperature increase. The extratropical stage of Hurricane Ida (2021) brought extreme subdaily rainfall and devastating flooding to parts of eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. We investigate the predictability and character of this event using 31-member ensembles of perturbed initial condition hindcasts with the Tropical Atlantic version of GFDL's System for High-resolution prediction on Earth-to-Local Domains (T-SHiELD), a ∼13-km global weather forecast model with a ∼3-km nested grid. At lead times of up to 4 days, the ensembles are able to capture the most extreme observed hourly and daily rainfall accumulations but are negatively biased in the spatial extent of heavy precipitation. Large intraensemble differences in the magnitudes and locations of simulated extremes suggest that although impacts were highly localized, risks were widespread. In Ida's tropical stage, interensemble spread in extreme hourly rainfall is well predicted by large-scale moisture convergence; by contrast, in Ida's extratropical stage, the most extreme rainfall is governed by mesoscale processes that exhibit chaotic and diverse forms across the ensembles. Our results are relevant to forecasting and communication in advance of extratropical transition and imply that flood preparedness efforts should account for the widespread possibility of severe localized impacts. Significance Statement: After making landfall in Louisiana, Hurricane Ida (2021) transitioned to an extratropical storm which brought extreme rainfall and unprecedented flooding to parts of the northeastern United States. To what extent were these impacts knowable in advance? We use a numerical weather model with very high resolution to produce ensemble hindcasts—simulations of a past weather event initialized with tiny perturbations to the initial conditions, representing dozens of equally plausible versions of Ida's extratropical stage. We find that the observed hourly and daily rainfall maxima fall within the simulated outcomes of ensembles initialized with lead times of about 4 days or less. The location and intensity of the heaviest rainfall vary widely across these ensembles, suggesting that many locations across the Northeast were exposed to some likelihood of extreme rainfall. The interaction between clouds and radiation is a key process within the climate system, and assessing the impacts of that interaction provides valuable insights into both the present-day climate and future projections. Many modeling experiments have been designed over the years to probe the impact of the cloud radiative effect (CRE) on the climate, including those that seek to disrupt the mean CRE effect and those that only disrupt the covariance of the CRE with the circulation. Seven such experimental designs have been added to the Energy Exascale Earth System Model version 1 (E3SMv1) of the US Department of Energy. These experiments include both the first and second iterations of the Clouds On/Off Klimate Intercomparison Experiment (COOKIE) experimental design, as well as the cloud-locking method. This paper documents the code changes necessary to implement such experiments and also provides detailed instructions for how to run them. Analyses across experiment types provide valuable insights and confirm the findings of prior studies, including the role of cloud radiative heating toward intensifying the monsoon, intensifying rain rates, and poleward expansion of the general circulation owing to cloud feedbacks. This study investigates the relative roles of sea surface temperature–forced climate changes and weather variability in driving the observed eastward shift of Atlantic hurricane tracks over the period from 1970 to 2021. A 10-member initial condition ensemble with a ∼25-km horizontal resolution tropical cyclone permitting atmospheric model (GFDL AM2.5-C360) with identical sea surface temperature and radiative forcing time series was analyzed in conjunction with historical hurricane track observations. While a frequency increase was recovered by all the simulations, the observed multidecadal eastward shift in tracks was not robust across the ensemble members, indicating that it included a substantial contribution from weather-scale variability. A statistical model was developed to simulate expected storm tracks based on genesis location and steering flow, and it was used to conduct experiments testing the roles of changing genesis location and changing steering flow in producing the multidecadal weather-driven shifts in storm tracks. These experiments indicated that shifts in genesis location were a substantially larger driver of these multidecadal track changes than changes in steering flow. The substantial impact of weather on tracks indicates that there may be limited predictability for multidecadal track changes like those observed, although basinwide frequency has greater potential for prediction. Additionally, understanding changes in genesis location appears essential to understanding changes in track location. Significance Statement: From the 1970s to the present, there has been an increase in the frequency of North Atlantic hurricanes, but they have also shifted in location to the east, away from land. We explore whether this shift in hurricanes' locations was caused by climatic factors or randomness to understand if and how these trends will persist. We also consider whether the shift was due to a change in where hurricanes started or how they moved over their lifespan. Analyzing data from observed and simulated hurricanes, we find that the shift was made more likely by climate factors, but ultimately occurred due to random variability in the hurricanes' starting locations. These results suggest a higher uncertainty in the future location and impact of hurricanes and highlight the importance of studying why hurricanes originate where they do. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
