In this paper, I attempt to shed more light in Bourdieu's habitus and doxa, by drawing on phenomenological and Bourdieusian‐based literature, social theory and some findings from sociological research. Despite the fact that there is a vast work concerning the examination of these two concepts, there are still some misunderstandings about them. For that reason, I have tried to draw a clearer picture of habitus, by linking it with phenomenological "being‐in‐the‐world" and describing its elements. As for doxa, I discuss its conceptual relation with habitus and phenomenology's natural attitude. Also, attention is given to some aspects of both habitus and doxa, which have not addressed in detailed fashion yet, but they are nevertheless theoretically useful for empirical qualitative research. Objective: The optimal duration of postsurgical antibiotic therapy for adult native joint bacterial arthritis remains unknown.Methods: We conducted a prospective, unblinded, randomised, non-inferiority study comparing either 2 or 4 weeks of antibiotic therapy after surgical drainage of native joint bacterial arthritis in adults. Excluded were implant-related infections, episodes without surgical lavage and episodes with a follow-up of less than 2 months.Results: We enrolled 154 cases: 77 in the 4-week arm and 77 in the 2-week arm. Median length of intravenous antibiotic treatment was 1 and 2 days, respectively. The median number of surgical lavages was 1 in both arms. Recurrence of infection was noted in three patients (2%): 1 in the 2-week arm (99% cure rate) and 2 in the 4-week arm (97% cure rate). There was no difference in the number of adverse events or sequelae between the study arms. Of the overall 154 arthritis cases, 99 concerned the hand and wrist, for which an additional subgroup analysis was performed. In this per-protocol subanalysis, we noted three recurrences: one in the 2-week arm (97 % cure); two in the 4-week arm (96 % cure) and witnessed sequelae in 50% in the 2-week arm versus 55% in the 4-week arm, of which five (13%) and six (13%) needed further interventions.Conclusions: After initial surgical lavage for septic arthritis, 2 weeks of targeted antibiotic therapy is not inferior to 4 weeks regarding cure rate, adverse events or sequelae and leads to a significantly shorter hospital stay, at least for hand and wrist arthritis.Trial Registration Number: NCT03615781. Background Tissue adhesives may be useful for sealing bowel anastomoses by preventing anastomotic leakage. Prior to clinical implementation, an in-depth analysis of the clinical and immunohistopathological effects of tissue adhesives on the target tissue and of the mechanical strength of the adhesive bond in an in vivo model is needed. Materials and methods In 84 rats, two bowel segments were glued using one of the following tissue adhesive: Bioglue, Gelatin-resorcinol-formaldehyde (GRF), Glubran 2, Histoacryl Flex, Omnex, Duraseal Xact, or Tissucol. Rats were followed for 7 or 28 days. Endpoints were clinical complication rate, mechanical strength, and immunohistopathological reactions. Results Of the seven tissue adhesives, GRF and Bioglue showed the highest rates of bowel wall destruction and ileus and the most severe immunohistopathological tissue reactions at 7 and 28 days. Cyanoacrylates (Histoacryl Flex, Omnex, Glubran 2) showed high mechanical strength and mild immunohistopathological reactions at 7 and 28 days. Duraseal Xact and Tissucol were the most inert tissue adhesives, but exhibited low mechanical strength. At 28 days, mechanical strength was significantly correlated to CD8, CD68, and Ki67 cell counts. Conclusion Based on the clinical and immunohistopathological outcomes, GRF and Bioglue were found to be the least suitable tissue adhesives for colonic use. Duraseal Xact and Tissucol were inert but also showed low mechanical strength. Cyanoacrylates exhibited mild clinical and immunohistopathological effects while maintaining high strength, which makes them promising as colonic sealants. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Background Although cyanoacrylate glue (CA) has been widely used in various kinds of medical applications, its application in gastrointestinal anastomosis remains limited, and outcomes of experimental studies have not been satisfactory. This systematic review summarizes research regarding CA application in intestinal and colorectal anastomosis, and correlates methodological aspects to experimental outcomes. Methods A systematic literature search was performed using Medline, Embase, Cochrane, and Web-of-Science libraries. Articles were selected if CA was applied to intestinal or colorectal anastomoses. Included articles were categorized according to CA molecular structure; the method details in each study were extracted and analyzed. Results Twenty-two articles were included. More than half of the inclusions reported positive outcomes (seven articles) or neutral outcomes (eight articles). Analysis of the methods revealed that methodological details such as CA dosage, time of polymerization were not consistently reported. Porcine studies, inverted anastomosis, and n-butyl-cyanoacrylate studies showed more positive outcomes; everted anastomosis, and oversized sutures might negatively influence the outcomes. Conclusions Owing to the positive outcome from the porcine studies, application of CA in gastrointestinal (GI) anastomosis still seems promising. To achieve a better consistency, more methodological details need to be provided in future studies. Optimizing the dosage of CA, choice of animal model, inverted anastomosis construction, and other method details may improve intestinal and colorectal anastomoses with CA application in future studies. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
