Reading interventions that focus on metacognitive strategy instruction for elementary students reveal positive effects but also require extensive teacher training and significant oversight by the research team. In the current study, a more 'hands off' scalable approach to strategy instruction was tested, where initial teacher training and materials were provided to Grade 3-5 teachers to integrate into their classrooms over a full academic year. Students in the treatment condition (N = 195) were contrasted with students in a typical classroom practice comparison group (N = 212). Structural equation modeling revealed that students in the intervention showed greater gains in strategic awareness and on a standardized test of reading comprehension and vocabulary than their peers in the comparison group. Interestingly, the benefits of the intervention were consistent across grade levels, and prior reading performance and reading self-efficacy.

Metacognition and motivation are considered key facets of self-regulation in various contexts. Recent studies identified a link between metacognition and creative performance, with metacognitively aware students performing more creatively and exhibiting higher levels of intrinsic and identified extrinsic motivation. The present study aims to examine the relationship between metacognition, orientation toward intrinsic or extrinsic motivation, and creative performance. One hundred nineteen university students completed the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) and Scale of Intrinsic versus Extrinsic Orientation in the Classroom and performed four verbal creativity tasks (product improvement task, consequences task, and two unusual uses tasks). The partial correlation network showed that all the creativity tasks were uniquely related to at least one facet of metacognition, and that the most complex task (product improvement task) was linked to both metacognitive knowledge and regulation. Furthermore, the structural equation model indicated that orientation toward intrinsic motivation mediated the relationship between metacognition and creative performance, explaining 16% of the variance in creative performance.

In contrast to traditional students, post-traditional students follow a broken path through the education system. Therefore, they are older when studying and often have jobs and families. The aim of the present study was to investigate motivation and personality character traits in 67 adult learners (part-time students) and 84 traditional students using the Czech version of the Business-Focused Inventory of Personality. Adult learners reported a higher level in all aspects of their personality in relation to working life, such as occupational orientation and behaviour, social competencies, and psychological constitution. These findings indicate that, from study-related requirements, part-time students pose higher achievement and motivation, and that they are more conscientious in relation to work and study.

The unskilled and unaware effect occurs when low-performing individuals overestimate their performance, while high performers underestimate it. The aim of the present study was to examine an occurrence of the unskilled and unaware effect in a self-assessment of creative performance, linking this phenomenon to creative metacognition (CMC) research. 262 participants from four educational stages (preschool, elementary school, high school, and undergraduate) performed an alternative uses task and evaluated their performance using self- and comparative judgments. A non-hierarchical cluster analysis of creative performance, judgments, and metacognitive accuracy was able to identify three separate clusters: an overestimating group of "unskilled and unaware" participants (27.1%), an underestimating group of "skilled and unaware" participants (44.3%), and, surprisingly, a group of "unskilled but aware" participants (28.6%). All three groups were present throughout the entire sample, from preschoolers to university students, but the distribution had developed with age. The most unskilled and unaware participants were in the group of preschoolers, while there were the most skilled but unaware among the university students. The findings are discussed in the context of creative metacognition and creative self-efficacy research.

Accurate self-evaluation leads to better regulation of learning and better performance in elementary school children and acts as a predictor of future academic success. The present study investigates the conditions under which preschoolers' self-evaluation accuracy can be enhanced. In the empirical research, 111 children were assigned to one of four conditions: control group, group receiving performance feedback, group acquiring repeated experience of testing, and group obtaining both performance feedback and repeated experience. All the children performed the same analogical reasoning tasks and provided self-evaluation judgments. The overall effects of the performance feedback and repeated experience were significant; however, low performers benefited only from performance feedback, while high performers benefited from performance feedback as well as repeated experience.

The aim of the present study is to monitor the effectiveness of a new conception of early literacy curriculum (in force since September 2016) which provides -- unlike the previous one -- a wide range of purposeful literacy practices and literacy events. The study compares graduates of previous early childhood literacy curriculum (tested in June 2016) with children who attended kindergarten in the years 2016-2019. Several indications of early literacy development were selected especially those that are culturally more sensitive, i.e. are significantly shaped by the social environment offering the broad spectrum of reading experiences. Results show statistically significant relationship of story listening comprehension with comprehension monitoring and narrative production, especially at the level of understanding the implicit meaning. The most profound group differences were found again in narratives and implicit meaning comprehension. On the other hand, no differences were found in indicators of phonemic awareness, comprehension monitoring and understanding the explicit meaning. The results are discussed in terms of their implications to educational practice.

Self-regulated learning is a multifaceted process that involves cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, affective, and behavioural components. These components are interconnected and influenced by contextual factors that shape the overall learning experience. Self-regulated learning empowers students to take control of their learning by utilising effective learning techniques, engaging in metacognitive processes, and fostering motivation and self-efficacy beliefs. The goal of the article is to explore the importance of self-regulated learning in enhancing students' academic performance and fostering a deep understanding of the learning material. Specifically, this research article explores the utilisation of learning techniques and strategies (LTSs) among pedagogy students, investigating their patterns and preferences for self-studying. The analysis of survey responses from a sample of 76 pedagogy students revealed that the most commonly used LTSs are rereading, note-taking, memorising, and highlighting. The utilisation of LTSs that are empirically considered effective, such as distributed practice, practice testing, and elaborative interrogation, was found to be extremely low. Moreover, the study revealed a lack of comprehensive training in learning techniques and strategies in pedagogy programmes, suggesting that current teachers are not adequately trained to create optimal classroom contexts for developing flexible self-regulatory skills in students. The findings highlight that by incorporating these practices into curriculum, future educators can empower their students to become active learners who select the appropriate strategies and reflect on their learning process. The evolving landscape of workforce learning underscores the increasing importance of self-directed learning (SDL) within business organizations. SDL shifts the learning responsibility to learners themselves, requiring self-control, self-management, and autonomous motivation. Despite its numerous benefits for both business organizations and workers, it is challenged by the varying degrees of workers' individual self-direction. This literature review aims to articulate the significance of social context – the support from leaders and peers – in facilitating workers' SDL. It highlights leader autonomy support as the key factor of fostering workers' autonomous motivation in SDL. Moreover, it examines the role of learner-peer interactions, including help, feedback, and information seeking, as specific aspects of peer support. These interactions further facilitate positive attitudes towards SDL and advance problem-solving, potentially leading to collaborative learning. Implementing new school reforms in school practice is extremely challenging mostly because of teacher resistance to change, or uncertainty, fear, or nostalgia for the previous curriculum. Since 2016 a new preschool curriculum including a new early literacy curriculum has been in force in Slovakia. The aim of the study is to assess how well teachers follow the requirement to use a variety of texts in the classroom to promote early literacy development. The analysis is performed on 138 observations out of a total of 215 structured observations, in which teachers used a text as part of an educational activity. The predominant use of narrative texts is linked to more traditional early literacy activities; however, the employment of different text genres relates to the use of different sources of text presentation, engagement with different ways of working with the text and is accompanied by different reading activities. Preschool children are generally inaccurate at evaluating past and predicting future performance. The present study examines the effect of performance feedback on the accuracy of preschoolers' predictive judgments and tests whether performance feedback acts as an anchor for postdictive judgments. In Experiment 1, preschool children (n = 40) solved number patterns, and in Experiment 2 they solved object patterns (n = 59). The results in both experiments revealed, firstly, that children receiving performance feedback made more accurate predictive judgments and lowered their certainty after their incorrect answer. Secondly, the children relied on performance feedback more than on actual task experience when making postdictive judgments, indicating that performance feedback was used as an anchor for subsequent postdictive judgments. Objectives. The aim of the study is to investigate reading comprehension and metacomprehension as they occur in preschool age in relation to sociocultural environment of the family, in comparison with traditional predictors of beginning reading acquisition represented by several indicators of phonological awareness. Participants and setting. A group of 327 pre-school-age children from middle-SES families and 55 children from low-SES families were compared. Hypotheses. It was assumed that children from low-SES families would perform worse than children from middle-SES families namely in literacy tasks requiring specific social experience with reading, i.e. text comprehension and metacognitive monitoring. Statistical analysis. The differences between the groups were tested using independent samples t-tests, monitoring accuracy on the correct and incorrect answers using the chi-squared test and the relationship between monitoring accuracy and performance in the two text comprehension tasks using 2-way ANO VA. Results. Results showed that children from low-SES families demonstrated significantly lower overall performance in all literacy tasks, however, the group differences in text comprehension varied in relation to the task difficulty (complexity and the level of comprehension). Moreover, in metacognitive monitoring, children from low-SES families showed significantly higher tendency to underestimate their correct performance, indicating lower self-esteem. Study limitations. The free association method is often employed in marketing research to investigate perceptions of a particular product or brand in different socio-cultural groups of customers. In our research, international and domestic students produced free associations in response to photographs of outdoor billboards from two different locations in one city (city centre and outskirts). The results indicate that free associations can depict qualitative aspects of outdoor billboards like poor quality (relating to the categories of amateurish and fake), problematic content (relating to female stereotypes, gender stereotypes and cultural differences), and that they have the potential to capture the general atmosphere of the neighbourhood (categories of decay, depression, danger and past). Higher fluid intelligence leads to better accuracy in metacognitive monitoring, but in school age this influence is moderated by the child's development and education. The goal of the study is to examine the interaction between fluid intelligence and performance feedback or calibration feedback on monitoring accuracy in 88 preschool children. The children in the group that received performance (PF) or calibration feedback (CF) were significantly more accurate at monitoring than the children without feedback (NF). Fluid intelligence correlated with monitoring accuracy for the whole dataset and explained 49% of variance in monitoring accuracy in the NF group; 26% in the PF group (feedback alone explained 20%) and only 12% in the CF group, not reaching significance (however, feedback alone explained 26%). Results indicate that calibration feedback could potentially fulfil the role of later education and development in improving monitoring accuracy and moderate the effect of fluid intelligence already in preschoolers. Objectives. Metacognitive monitoring in preschool children plays an important role in the further learning process and help seeking. The aim of the present study is to determine whether the preschool children are able to monitor their performance while solving cognitive tasks (1). What is the relationship between the accuracy of metacognitive monitoring and the performance (2). How are these relationships related to the nature of cognitive tasks (3). Sample and setting. The sample consisted of total 97 children from 5 to 6 years old. Children individually solved 4 cognitive tasks and provided item-by-item or global confidence judgments (CJs) using the traffic light with red and green colours. Statistical analysis. Absolute accuracy index and bias index (Schraw, 2009) were calculated. To analyse age differences and bias differences (real and overestimated performance) independent samples t-test was used. To analyse task differences the ANOVA was used. Results. Preschool children are able to monitor their performance retrospectively (using CJs). They are more metacognitively accurate in verbal tasks than in non-verbal (Piagetian) tasks. Moreover, the monitoring accuracy significantly (p < .001) corresponds to the task performance. Study limitation. The finding requires further research concerning analyzing other characteristics of the cognitive task such as difficulty, and using different ways of analyzing and evaluating results, as well as taking into account the factors of social environment, which plays an important role in the development of metacognitive awareness in preschool children. University students often employ generative artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT in resolution of ill-defined problem-solving tasks. However, the experimental evidence about effects of ChatGPT on complex problem-solving performance is still missing. In this preregistered experiment, the impact of ChatGPT on performance in a complex creative problem-solving task was investigated in 77 university students solving a task with ChatGPT in comparison to 68 students solving a task without it. ChatGPT use significantly improved self-efficacy for task resolution (d = 0.65) and enhanced the quality (d = 0.69), elaboration (d = 0.61), and originality (d = 0.55) of solutions. Moreover, participants with ChatGPT assistance perceived task as easier (d = 0.56) and requiring less mental effort (d = 0.58). However, use of ChatGPT did not make task resolution more interesting (d = 0.08), and the impact of ChatGPT on metacognitive monitoring accuracy was unclear. Although there were no significant differences in absolute accuracy between students solving the task with and without the assistance of ChatGPT, the absence of correlation between self-evaluation judgments and performance suggests that participants struggled to calibrate their self-evaluations when using ChatGPT. Notably, the perceived usefulness of ChatGPT appeared to inform self-evaluation judgments, resulting in higher inaccuracy. The implications for hybrid human-AI regulation (HHAIR) theory are discussed. To regulate effectively, students using AI tools should focus on valid metacognitive cues instead of the perceived ease of ChatGPT-assisted problem-solving. • ChatGPT improved self-efficacy and enhanced the quality, elaboration, and originality of solutions. • Task resolution with ChatGPT was perceived as easier and requiring less mental effort. • ChatGPT did not make task resolution more interesting, and its impact on self-evaluation accuracy was unclear. • It is important to consider various heuristic cues in understanding metacognitive monitoring with ChatGPT. • Perceived usefulness of ChatGPT was associated with higher overestimation of the quality and originality of answers.
