Alvarez, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at the University of New Hampshire, this book narrates the embodied experiences of a young Filipino gay man named Mike whose suffering from childhood trauma slowly escalates into relentless delusions and self-harm that eventually propel him to seek professional help. Alvarez's beautifully sculpted book captures Mike's multidimensional psychological life as he lives, observes, and narrates it within structures that medicalize people's mental health experiences. Dividing his text into story and analysis, Alvarez brings a critical gaze to normative medical and psychiatric accounts of mental health and highlights the agency of people navigating their embodied landscapes, trauma, suicidality, and recovery. Rockfalls can often pose a significant risk to the public if protective designs do not properly account for block movement downslope and onto infrastructure facilities. Assessing these hazards is challenging, especially as current empirical and computational methods for predicting trajectories of falling blocks generally do not include the contribution associated with rotational behavior. Research undertaken at the University of New Hampshire, USA, over the last decade has led to the development of Smart Rock (SR) sensors inserted in natural rocks to evaluate these events from the perspective of the falling rock. The latest SRs consist of 3 D printed capsules 58.0 mm in length and 25.4 mm in diameter, equipped with a ±400 g and a ±16 g 3-axis accelerometer, a ± 4000 dps high-rate gyroscope, and an altimeter. Approximately 80 field experiments conducted in New Hampshire and Vermont provided SR data on rockfall at ten different sites. The Smart Rock data allowed more in-depth evaluations of accelerations, rotation rates, and modes of motion with precise time intervals, which cannot be easily captured in video recording systems or other instrumentation techniques. The catastrophic COVID-19 pandemic drove home the need to change homeland security/emergency management (HLS/EM) higher education curricula. They failed to adequately assess the probability and consequences of potentially disastrous emerging infectious disease outbreaks--particularly at the complex systems level. Pandemic disease and antimicrobial drug resistance are now more significant risks than before COVID-19. Historic bioweapons and significant advances in biotechnology will make bio-warfare a growing international security risk. Because of these unique, complex, and unfamiliar public health security risk variables, HLS/EM and national security education must better familiarize future professionals with this "wicked" problem set. How can instructors and librarians collaborate to provide the interpretive scaffolds for students to critically engage with visual primary materials? The authors, an English faculty member and a faculty instruction librarian at the University of New Hampshire at Manchester (UNH Manchester), used graphic fiction as the textual basis of information literacy (IL) instruction, encouraging students to interpret primary and secondary sources using visual literacy heuristics and critical inquiry skills. Their student-centered, inquiry-based IL session for a Capstone Shakespearean Adaptations course focused on critical thinking and research question design. Using woodcuts from primary historical texts and images from contemporary graphic fiction adaptations of Macbeth , the instructors decentralized the classroom, empowering students to ask probing questions about illustrations of witches in early modern English source materials. Students used their questions to explore interpretations of visual depictions of powerful women in historical primary texts and contemporary graphic adaptations of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Guided by the instructors, students decoded images using the metadiscourse of graphic fiction; generated questions to inform their own inquiry into the topic; applied their IL skills to new texts; and interrogated the biases of received narratives about women who transgress societal norms and expectations, both in the early modern period and in the contemporary world. "Story Culture Live: Black American Story Spaces as Actionable Antiracism Work," was a keynote given at the Northeast Writing Centers Association Conference at the University of New Hampshire in spring 2023. The book "Holding Their Breath: How the Allies Confronted the Threat of Chemical Warfare in World War II" by M. Girard Dorsey explores why chemical warfare was not widely used by the Allies during the Second World War. This paper describes the University of New Hampshire Water Balance Model, WBM, a process-based gridded global hydrologic model that simulates the land surface components of the global water cycle and includes water extraction for use in agriculture and domestic sectors. The WBM was first published in 1989; here, we describe the first fully open-source WBM version (v.1.0.0). Earlier descriptions of WBM methods provide the foundation for the most recent model version that is detailed here. We present an overview of the model functionality, utility, and evaluation of simulated global river discharge and irrigation water use. This new version adds a novel suite of water source tracking modules that enable the analysis of flow-path histories on water supply. A key feature of WBM v.1.0.0 is the ability to identify the partitioning of sources for each stock or flux within the model. Three different categories of tracking are available: (1) primary inputs of water to the surface of the terrestrial hydrologic cycle (liquid precipitation, snowmelt, glacier melt, and unsustainable groundwater); (2) water that has been extracted for human use and returned to the terrestrial hydrologic system; and (3) runoff originating from user-defined spatial land units. Such component tracking provides a more fully transparent model in that users can identify the underlying mechanisms generating the simulated behavior. We find that WBM v.1.0.0 simulates global river discharge and irrigation water withdrawals well, even with default parameter settings, and for the first time, we are able to show how the simulation arrives at these fluxes by using the novel tracking functions. Intelligent management of power and spectrum is the most important ingredient in creating wireless sensor networks with high reliability and longevity. The main application under study in this paper is accurate monitoring of forest ecosystems using high spatio-temporal resolution. High cost of the current systems and their power consumption limits wide spread use of these systems limiting the accuracy of current models. This project utilizes artificial intelligence and machine learning to learn the changes in the wireless network and environment, producing power efficient systems that are low cost to enable large scale monitoring. The proposed system was built at the University of Maine's Wireless Sensor Networks (WiSe-Net) laboratory in collaboration with University of New Hampshire and University of Vermont researchers for soil moisture measurement with provision to include other sensor types at later stages. Experimental data are reported for a wind turbine array boundary layer (WTABL) in a model wind farm. An array of 95 model wind turbines consisting of 5 streamwise columns by 19 spanwise rows was studied in a high Reynolds number boundary layer in the Flow Physics Facility (FPF) at the University of New Hampshire. The wind turbine array was constructed of porous disks of 0.25 m diameter, which were drag (thrust) matched to typical offshore wind turbine operating conditions. The turbine spacing was 8 diameters in the streamwise and 4 diameters in the spanwise directions. Spires were used to thicken the boundary layer and achieve a boundary layer thickness on the order of 1 m at the first row of the wind turbine array, which is located 33 m downstream from the test section inlet, thus placing the turbines in the bottom 1/3 of the boundary layer. Velocity profiles were measured with a pitot tube in the center column of the array. To within experimental uncertainty, a fully developed WTABL condition is observed in the mean velocity, for defined inlet conditions and spacings, from row 12 on. The wind turbine array acts as a sparse displaced roughness: it creates an internal layer whose origin (in the wall‐normal direction) remains fixed in space, while the turbulent boundary layer the array was placed in continues to grow. Careful consideration was given to an expanded uncertainty analysis, which elucidates the need for long measurement times in large facilities. Porous disk turbine models are the experimental equivalent of numerical actuator disks; therefore, this publicly available data set is expected to be useful for numerical model validation. Commercial dairy producers may get frustrated by the lower ratio of female to male calves born because female calves are more valuable than bull calves. Our objective was to determine if parity or stage of lactation at the time of breeding, using conventional semen, influenced the sex of the calf. Data from the University of Illinois and the University of New Hampshire dairy herds were collected and summarized for calf sex, the number of services to achieve a calf and the lactation number when conception of that calf occurred. Logistical regression procedures were used to analyze the dataset via version 9.4 of SAS. The final dataset contained 2,987 calvings, which consisted of 1,406 females and 1,581 males (47.1% and 52.9% for females and males, respectively). The frequency distribution of the number of services to achieve a calf was highest for the first service and progressively declined with increasing services (52.06%, 21.66%, 10.75%, 6.66%, 4.22%, and 4.65% for 1 to 6 services, respectively). The frequency distribution of calvings by lactation number was greatest for first lactation cows becoming pregnant with their second calf and declined with increasing parity (35.49%, 28.22%, 17.01%, 9.61%, 5.02%, 2.51%, 1.14%, 0.70%, and 0.30% for lactation numbers 1 to 9, respectively). Logistic stepwise regression indicated that the number of services to achieve a calf was significant in predicting the ratio of female to male calves. Calculation of odds ratios indicated that as the lactation number increased the likelihood of getting a bull calf decreased. Parity, services, and parity by services interaction were significant for cows having a greater number of parities and cows with a greater number of services yielding more heifer calves. However, an interaction occurred where cows with greater number of services along with greater parities more likely to have a bull calf. These data provide evidence that increasing the number of services to achieve a calf and increasing age of the cow increased the probability of a heifer calf being born. These data indicate that cows with greater parties (lesser cull rate) are more likely to produce heifer calves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acoustic emissions from current energy converters remain an environmental concern for regulators because of their potential effects on marine life and uncertainties about their effects stemming from a lack of sufficient observational data. Several recent opportunities to characterize tidal turbine sound emissions have begun to fill knowledge gaps and provide a context for future device deployments. In July 2021, a commercial-off-the-shelf hydrophone was deployed in a free-drifting configuration to measure underwater acoustic emissions and characterize a 25 kW-rated tidal turbine at the University of New Hampshire's Living Bridge Project in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Sampling methods and analysis were performed in alignment with the recently published IEC 62600-40 Technical Specification for acoustic characterization of marine energy converters. Results from this study indicate acoustic emissions from the turbine were below ambient sound levels and therefore did not have a significant impact on the underwater noise levels of the project site. As a component of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Triton Field Trials (TFiT) described in this Special Issue, this effort provides a valuable use case for the IEC 62600-40 Technical Specification framework and further recommendations for cost-effective technologies and methods for measuring underwater noise at future current energy converter project sites. The inertial sublayer of adverse pressure-gradient (APG) turbulent boundary layers is investigated using new experimental measurements (7000 < d + 7800), existing lower Reynolds number experimental (d + - 1000) and computational (d + < 800) data sets, where d + is the friction Reynolds number. In the present experimental set-up the boundary layer is under modest APG conditions, where the Clauser PG parameter ß is =1.8. Well-resolved hot-wire measurements are obtained at the Flow Physics Facility at the University of New Hampshire in the region of an APG ramp. Comparisons are made with zero pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer (ZPG TBL) experimental data at similar Reynolds number and numerical simulation data at lower Reynolds number. The main aims of the present study centre on the inertial sublayer of the APG TBL and the degree to which its characteristics are similar to those of the ZPG TBL. This investigation utilizes equation-based analyses and empirical approaches. Among other results, the data suggest that even though the APG TBL streamwise variance does not exhibit a logarithmic profile (unlike the ZPG TBL) both ZPG and APG TBLs exhibit distance-from-the-wall scaling on the inertial sublayer. Theoretical arguments suggest that wall-distance scaling resulting from a self-similar dynamics is consistent with both a single velocity scale leading to a log-law in mean velocity profile as well as multiple velocity scales leading to a power-law mean velocity profile. Therefore, users can determine what proportion of any flux consists of each of the primary inputs of water to the surface of the terrestrial hydrologic cycle, previously extracted water for human uses, or runoff generated from any place on the Earth's surface. The aim of the present study was to examine the interrelationships between adolescent media activity, adaptive or maladaptive cognitions related to media use, and identity development processing styles. Participating in the study were 359 adolescents (47% males and 53% females), ages 11–18 years (mean age 14.52, SD 2.24). They completed the Media Activity Form—Youth Self-Report (Achenbach, T. (2018). Media Activity Form – Youth Self-Report. A self-report questionnaire developed by T. Achenbach, University of New Hampshire, New Hampshire, USA, for purposes of media activity research.), and the Identity Style Inventory (Berzonsky et al., Psychological Assessment 25:893–904, 2013). The results showed negative associations between informational identity processing style and time spent gaming, as well as negative associations with time spent communicating via digital media. Informational identity processing style was positively associated with adaptive media-related cognitions, such as schoolwork benefits from media use. Normative identity processing style was negatively associated with time spend using media for schoolwork or for communicating. Diffuse—avoidant identity processing style was positively associated with time spent gaming, and positively associated with ratings of preoccupation with being on media. Measurements of the mass concentration and chemical speciation of aerosols are important to investigate their chemical and physical processing from near emission sources to the most remote regions of the atmosphere. A common method to analyze aerosols is to collect them onto filters and analyze the filters offline; however, biases in some chemical components are possible due to changes in the accumulated particles during the handling of the samples. Any biases would impact the measured chemical composition, which in turn affects our understanding of numerous physicochemical processes and aerosol radiative properties. We show, using filters collected onboard the NASA DC-8 and NSF C-130 during six different aircraft campaigns, a consistent, substantial difference in ammonium mass concentration and ammonium-to-anion ratios when comparing the aerosols collected on filters versus an Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS). Another online measurement is consistent with the AMS in showing that the aerosol has lower ammonium-to-anion ratios than obtained by the filters. Using a gas uptake model with literature values for accommodation coefficients, we show that for ambient ammonia mixing ratios greater than 10 ppbv, the timescale for ammonia reacting with acidic aerosol on filter substrates is less than 30 s (typical filter handling time in the aircraft) for typical aerosol volume distributions. Measurements of gas-phase ammonia inside the cabin of the DC-8 show ammonia mixing ratios of 45±20 ppbv, consistent with mixing ratios observed in other indoor environments. This analysis enables guidelines for filter handling to reduce ammonia uptake. Finally, a more meaningful limit of detection for University of New Hampshire Soluble Acidic Gases and Aerosol (SAGA) filters collected during airborne campaigns is ∼0.2 µgsm-3 of ammonium, which is substantially higher than the limit of detection of ion chromatography. A similar analysis should be conducted for filters that collect inorganic aerosol and do not have ammonia scrubbers and/or are handled in the presence of human ammonia emissions. Evaluation of feed efficiency (FE; calculated as energy-corrected milk yield/dry matter intake) and milk nitrogen efficiency (MNE; calculated as milk N yield/N intake) is needed to help farmers make decisions regarding the economic and environmental sustainability of dairy farms. Our primary objective was to compare FE and MNE data obtained from studies conducted with organic versus conventional dairy cows. Specifically, 3 data sets were constructed to meet this goal: (1) the organic Jersey data set (ORG-JE) built with studies (n = 11) done at the University of New Hampshire Burley-Demeritt Organic Dairy Research Farm (Lee, NH), (2) the conventional Jersey data set (CON-JE) constructed using 19 experiments reported in the literature, and (3) the organic non-Jersey-breed (mostly Holstein, Swedish Red, and Norwegian Red) data set (ORG-NJE) created with 11 published studies. Comparisons were made between ORG-JE and CON-JE and between ORG-JE and ORG-NJE. A second objective was to compare the enteric methane (CH 4) emission data set from studies using organic Jerseys (n = 5) with those using conventional Jerseys (n = 4). Cows used in the ORG-JE data set had lower FE (−16%) and MNE (−15.5%) than cows used in the CON-JE counterpart, possibly because dry matter intake increased by an average of 10.4% in organic cows. Feed efficiency and MNE computed from cows belonging to the ORG-NJE data set were intermediate between ORG-JE and CON-JE. Measured CH 4 intensity (g/kg of energy-corrected milk) from cows in the ORG-JE CH 4 data set increased by 71% compared with that from cows in the CON-JE CH 4 data set. Estimated FE and enteric CH 4 emissions revealed that Wisconsin organic dairies with the heaviest reliance on forage sources and longest grazing time during the summer were the least feed efficient and emitted the greatest amount of CH 4 per kilogram of energy-corrected milk at the animal and whole-farm levels. Overall, the comparisons of FE, MNE, and enteric CH 4 emissions between organic and conventional dairies and within organic systems made in this symposium review should be interpreted cautiously because they are based on study means and small data sets. Research is needed to better characterize the performance, efficiency, profitability, and carbon emissions of forage-based organic dairies in the United States, including the fast-growing "grass-fed" segment, which relies exclusively on forage diets. The effect of large organic dairies on the economic and social sustainability of small and mid-size organic dairy operations nationwide also deserves further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Organic Dairy Research Farm in Lee, New Hampshire, I researched the practice of aerated static composting for potential heat capture. In early 2019, I created an Excel model to illustrate the ability of greenhouses to retain heat during a cold January and calculated the total energy balance for each day. This model shows that an average greenhouse, based on the dimensions of the greenhouse at nearby Kingman Farm, requires an additional, external heat source to supplement its heating needs during this time. By adding the heat generated by the aerated static composting pile to the greenhouse in the Excel model, we showed that the greenhouse could run on this heat alone, without the need for an external, nonrenewable source. UNH has the resources necessary to make this project come to life, and I believe that doing so would further our institution's achievements in sustainability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the last several decades, the commercial fishing fleet in New England has been subjected to increasingly restrictive management measures established to rebuild declining stocks. This has limited fishing opportunities and significantly reduced the inshore small vessel fleet. To help support New Hampshire (NH) commercial fishermen, an extension program was developed by the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and NH Sea Grant to train fishers on small-scale integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) growing steelhead trout, blue mussels, and sugar kelp together, with the goal of providing alternative income sources and increasing local food production without adding significant levels of nitrogen to the environment. A total of 416 kg of steelhead trout, 3072 kg of blue mussels, and 638 kg of sugar kelp were produced in this study. The steelhead trout released an estimated 25.1 kg of N into the environment, while the mussels and kelp together extracted an estimated 41.5 kg N for a net reduction of ∼16.4 kg N from the ecosystem. There was no observed negative impact on local water quality at any point during the trial. This study seeks to examine the relationship between networks of social relationships (social capital), and academic achievement (grade point average). It provides an introduction of the topic, relevant definitions and a brief literature review of supporting studies. The survey research presented in this study was taken from a convenience sample of the University of New Hampshire students (N=471). The study found that there were statistically significant results at the 0.01 alpha level supporting the existence of this relationship. Overall, there was a positive relationship between students that took more classes with friends as well as students that were involved in extracurricular activities/organizations and their GPAs. This study concludes by summarizing the research findings, presenting clear limitations, and highlighting key areas of implications for future research. The stochastic closure theory (SCT) of turbulence [1] and [2] has been extended to Homogeneous Turbulence [3], Boundary Turbulence [4, 5] and Lagrangian turbulence. These extensions give excellent agreement with experimental data. We explain how the theory puts the Kolmogorov- Obukhov '62 scaling theory, with the She-Leveque intermittency corrections [6] on a firm theoretical foundation and permits one to compute the scaling coefficients, in addition to the scaling exponents, and their dependence on the (Taylor) Reynolds (T-R) number. For Homogeneous Turbulence SCT is compared to data obtained in the Variable Density Turbulence Tunnel (VDTT) [7], at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Gottingen. Given a mean flow in homogeneous turbulence the comparison with the data reduces the number of parameters in SCT to just three, one characterizing the variance of the mean field noise and another characterizing the rate in the large deviations of the mean. The third parameter is the decay exponent of the Fourier variables in the Fourier expansion of the noise. This characterizes the smoothness of the turbulent velocity. For Boundary Turbulence we compare the predictions of SCT to the generalized Townsend-Perry constants [8] as estimated from measurements in the Flow Physic Facility (FPF) [9] at the University of New Hampshire. Following [5] we show how the SCT can be used to compute the constants, explaining the sub-Gaussian relations of the constants. We then compare the SCT theory predictions with the data [10], showing good agreement. Finally, we discuss the extension of SCT to Lagrangian Turbulence. Very surprisingly the comparison of SCT and the data also gives information about the smoothness of the turbulent velocity as T-R becomes very large, see [3]. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The purpose of this study is to compare the differences in mentorship expectations and attitudes between Army and civilian healthcare leaders, and to review cultural differences between the Army and civilian sectors.Materials and Methods: This study used survey data from Army Medical Service Corps officers and members of a regional chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) to compare attributes of, and attitudes toward, mentorship. A principal component analysis was used to develop three broad mentorship factors, and a comparison of individual attributes was conducted between populations. Institutional approval (IRB) was granted by the University of New Hampshire (IRB #: 6676).Results: The principal component analysis showed similar underlying factors for both populations. An attribute level comparison demonstrated important differences in attitudes toward mentors and mentoring between the Army and civilian participants.Conclusion: The differences between the Army and civilian samples appear to arise from differences in their respective cultures. The utilization by the Army of formal training programs such as the Army's Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC), fill a need provided by mentors in civilian organizations. The common experience of professional training like BOLC is part of what creates and sustains the "thick" culture of the Army. Former Army members making the transition to a civilian career should bear in mind that they are leaving behind a thick culture, and that individual relationships may have greater impact on their future careers than they had experienced in the Army. Four hundred and seventy-seven alumni of the University of New Hampshire’s (UNH) Cooperative Real Education in Agriculture Management (CREAM) course (1998-2018) were surveyed regarding experiential learning in a flipped classroom (also known as a backwards or reverse classroom). Using both open and closed ended questions, we received responses from 220 alumni, comprising 187 women and 33 men. Majors primarily included pre-veterinary medicine (121) and animal science or dairy management (67). Within 24 months of graduation 67 alumni went to veterinary school, 51 to production agriculture, 29 to graduate school and others to work areas related to agriculture, companion animals and zoo animals as well as human health fields. The highest ranked skills students learned were animal health practices, animal nutrition, cattle handling, reproduction, and milking. The five highest ranked interpersonal skills were teamwork, group decision making, oral communication, leadership, and initiative. Alumni strongly agreed that CREAM’s experiential strategies were effective, provided an understanding of the dairy industry and agreed that the flipped classroom approach was an effective teaching strategy. In addition, alumni agreed they were required to problem solve on the farm and that the course had an impact on their career, and the program was recognized by graduate and veterinary schools. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe the development, implementation and impact evaluation of an interactive theater-based workshop by the ADVANCE program at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). The workshop is part of a larger institutional transformation program funded by the National Science Foundation.Design/methodology/approach This institutional transformation program relied upon a systems approach to diagnose potential causes for the underrepresentation of women faculty in certain disciplines. This revealed that increasing awareness of, and reducing, implicit gender bias among members of faculty search committees could, in time, contribute to increasing the representation of women faculty at UNH. A committee charged with developing a faculty workshop to achieve this change identified interactive theater as an effective faculty training approach. The committee oversaw the development of customized scripts, and the hiring of professional actors and a facilitator to implement the workshop.Findings The workshop's effectiveness in fulfilling its goals was assessed using faculty hiring and composition data, program evaluations, participant interviews and questions in an annual faculty climate survey. Findings indicate that the representation of women faculty increased significantly at UNH since the implementation of the interactive theater workshop. Analysis of the multiple sources of data provides corroborating evidence that a significant portion of the increase is directly attributable to the workshop.Originality/value This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of interactive theater-based workshops in an academic environment and of the systems approach in diagnosing and solving organizational problems. This study examines the effects of gender identity on sense of safety on a college campus. Data was collected through an online survey sent out to students at the University of New Hampshire. Students answered nominal and ordinal questions about their gender identity, as well as Likert-scale questions regarding opinions on safety while walking on campus. The results of the survey showed correlation between gender identity and sense of safety while walking alone at night, however, the survey showed no correlation between gender identity and sense of safety while walking at night with a friend. Collecting data from a larger and more representative sample would improve findings on students, specifically those who identify as transgender and non-conforming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study assesses college students from the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and their attitudes and opinions toward people of color, specifically looking at racial/ethnic identity and campus social climate. With 362 respondents from the University of New Hampshire who answered our online survey, it looked at the participants' post-racial ideologies and the participant's racial/ethnic identity. This study finds that there is a correlation between racial identity and post-racial beliefs. The study found that 82 percent of the student respondents did not believe that we, as a society, lived in a post-racial America. It was also discovered that the student respondents who did believe we live in a post-racial society (eighteen percent) were almost primarily White participants. The research also shows that in comparison to students of color, White students are more likely to believe that there is little to no racial prejudice or discrimination on UNH's campus. While this data gives important insight into the racial attitudes at UNH, having a more diverse demographic and a larger sample size would improve the research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During World War I, the U.S. War Department contracted with 157 universities to form the National Army Training Detachments whose mission was to train college-age draftees in 66 critical army trades (subsequently the Student Army Training Corps). This program is an overlooked part of First World War history and has received little to no archaeological inquiry. This paper investigates the New Hampshire College camp. Working between documentary and archaeological materials, this paper explores how the interrelated duties of educational institutions, businesses, government, and individuals merged with an American wartime imagined community here but also how in their lived experiences of the camp, people materialized the complications of balancing citizenship, difference, duty, and nation. The social lives of the lower-rank men who inhabited these camps, the composite communities formed at them, and the impact of the government's assertion of control over institutions of higher education all carry material ramifications that deserve further investigation. This study examines the relationship between learning disabilities and academic success in college students. A total of 343 students from the University of New Hampshire responded to an online survey with 64 questions. The survey asked students how they would rate their overall academic performance (very good, good, bad, very bad), as well as if they had a learning disability or not. The responses were then examined to see if there was in fact a correlation between the two. The results showed that there was no correlation between learning disabilities and academic success. However, the findings were suggestive that with a larger sample size there would likely be a relationship. This study investigates the effects of in-person contacts on strength of friendship ties considering the increasing popularity of social networks that are being used to maintain friendships. Based on a sample of 317 UNH undergraduate students, this research concludes that the relationship between in-person contacts and strength of friendship ties is significant. Students who reported having more in-person contacts with their old friends tend to have strong friendship ties. Limitations of the study and suggestions for future studies are also discussed. This study examines college students' awareness of genetically modified (GM) foods and whether it alters his or her eating behaviors. This study draws on data from a sample of 318 undergraduate students enrolled at the University of New Hampshire, who completed an online survey via Qualtrics. The survey looked specifically at how aware students are of genetically modified foods, and how many GM meals he or she consumes per week. The results of this survey showed a strong correlation between higher levels of awareness and more consumption of GM food. These findings suggest that people with less awareness of GM food may be uninformed of the prevalence of genetically altered food in our society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the controversy surrounding the administration review on China-based university Confucius Institute (CI), highlighting the views of University of New Hampshire president Mark Huddleston on the issue. Huddleston reportedly raised questions on the review's independence and criticized the financial links between CI and the Chinese government. It notes that CI is controversial as it is controlled by the government which aims to spread Communist beliefs.

Objective -- The aim was to measure the impact of a peer-to-peer model on information literacy skill-building among first-year students at a small commuter college in the United States. The University of New Hampshire (UNH) is the state's flagship public university and UNH Manchester is one of its seven colleges. This study contributed to a program evaluation of the Research Mentor Program at UNH Manchester whereby peer writing tutors are trained in basic library research skills to support first-year students throughout the research and writing process. Methods -- The methodology employed a locally developed pre-test/post-test instrument with fixed-choice and open-ended questions to measure students' knowledge of the library research process. Anonymized data was collected using an online survey with SurveyMonkey™ software. A rubric was developed to score the responses to open-ended questions. Results -- The study indicated a positive progression toward increased learning for the three information literacy skills targeted: 1) using library resources correctly, 2) building effective search strategies, and 3) evaluating sources appropriately. Students scored higher in the fixed- choice questions than the open-ended ones, demonstrating their ability to more effectively identify the applicable information literacy skill than use the language of information literacy to describe their own research behavior. Conclusions -- The assessment methodology used was an assortment of low-key, locally- developed instruments that provided timely data to measure students understanding of concepts taught and to apply those concepts correctly. Although the conclusions are not generalizable to other institutions, the findings were a valuable component of an ongoing program evaluation.
