International audience; For the first time, a Zn1.1Ga1.8Ge0.1O4 transparent spinel ceramic has been fully densified by spark plasma sintering. XRD measurements show that this ceramic is composed of a pure cubic spinel phase. SEM analysis revealed a homogeneous and dense microstructure with the average grain size being 200 ± 100 nm. The transmittance of these fine-grained ceramics reached 70 % in the visible range and is very close to 80 % at 2 µm, thus close to the Tmax value deduced from the measurement of the refractive index. The ceramics exhibit excellent mechanical properties with a Young modulus of 222 GPa, a Vickers hardness of 14.25 GPa and a thermal conductivity of 7.3 W.m−1. K−1. By doping with Cr3+ ions, transparent Zn1.1Ga1.8Ge0.1O4 ceramics present both a red luminescence and a long-lasting afterglow during several minutes. Moreover, a near infrared broadband emission at 1.3 µm is also achieved with Ni2+ ions.

This paper is a product of the Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS) working group., Explosive volcanism is a key contributor to climate variability on interannual to centennial timescales1. Understanding the far-field societal impacts of eruption-forced climatic changes requires firm event chronologies and reliable estimates of both the burden and altitude (that is, tropospheric versus stratospheric) of volcanic sulfate aerosol2, 3. However, despite progress in ice-core dating, uncertainties remain in these key factors4. This particularly hinders investigation of the role of large, temporally clustered eruptions during the High Medieval Period (HMP, 1100–1300 ce), which have been implicated in the transition from the warm Medieval Climate Anomaly to the Little Ice Age5. Here we shed new light on explosive volcanism during the HMP, drawing on analysis of contemporary reports of total lunar eclipses, from which we derive a time series of stratospheric turbidity. By combining this new record with aerosol model simulations and tree-ring-based climate proxies, we refine the estimated dates of five notable eruptions and associate each with stratospheric aerosol veils. Five further eruptions, including one responsible for high sulfur deposition over Greenland circa 1182 ce, affected only the troposphere and had muted climatic consequences. Our findings offer support for further investigation of the decadal-scale to centennial-scale climate response to volcanic eruptions.

International audience; Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (Paxlovid®) consists of a peptidomimetic inhibitor (Nirmatrelvir) of the SARS-CoV-2 main protease and a pharmacokinetic enhancer (Ritonavir). It is approved for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19. This combination of nirmatrelvir and ritonavir can mediate significant and complex drug-drug interactions (DDIs), primarily due to the ritonavir component. Indeed, ritonavir inhibits the metabolism of nirmatrelvir through cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) leading to higher plasma concentrations and a longer half-life of nirmatrelvir. Co-administration of nirmatrelvir/ritonavir with immunosuppressant drugs (ISDs) is particularly challenging given the major involvement of CYP3A in the metabolism of most of these drugs and their narrow therapeutic ranges. Exposure of ISDs will be drastically increased through the potent ritonavir-mediated inhibition of CYP3A, resulting in an increased risk of adverse drug reactions. While a decrease in the dosage of ISDs can prevent toxicity, an inappropriate dosage regimen may also result in insufficient exposure and a risk of rejection. Here we provide some general recommendations for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of ISDs and dosing recommendations when co-administered with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir. Particularly, tacrolimus should be discontinued, or patients should be given a microdose on day-1, while cyclosporine dosage should be reduced to 20% of the initial dosage during the antiviral treatment. Dosages of mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors (m-TORis) should also be adjusted while dosages of mycophenolic acid and corticosteroids are expected to be less impacted.

International audience; To assess the impact of cognitive Dual Task (DT) during walking on the energy cost of walking (Cw) in individuals with subacute stroke. The secondary objective was to determine whether there is an association between the Cw and cortical activity of the prefrontal area.

International audience; Objective: To review studies conducted on the costs of dementia in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), describe their methodology and summarize costsestimates.Methods: We conducted a systematic review, searching in bibliographic databases in health, economics and social sciences, and main grey literature resources. Publications were evaluated by two independent investigators, conflict discussed, and the final decision taken by a third investigator. We included all studies presenting costs of any aspect of dementia care.Results: Overall, 6,843 title and abstract, then 74 full texts articles evaluated. Finally, 15 single studies were included. Those were from only 9 out of the 156 LMICs: China (6); Brazil (2); and one from Argentina, Colombia, Iran, Peru, Romania, Thailand and Turkey. No study was from Africa. Studies focused mainly on Alzheimer’s disease. Studies investigated all three categories of cost-of-illness i.e., medical, social and informal care costs, but items, data collection and definitions in each category were highly variable. Dementia costs tend to increase with the severity of the disease with greater medical costs in the mild stage and higher social and informal care costs in the moderate and severe stages. Costs estimates varied widely: from $327.4 to $1,266.3 for annual medical costs, from $112.4 to $5,575.0 for social costs; and costs from $324.0 to $10,031.1 for informal care. Overall, dementia care cost up to $19,101 per year for a single patient, usually at the charge of families.Conclusion: Limited studies have been conducted on dementia costs in LMICs, with none so far in Africa. It appears urgent to provide accurate evidence of the disease burden in the region to guide public health policies.

International audience; Objectives: The diffusion of the SARS-CoV-2 Delta (B.1.617.2) variant and the waning of immune response after primary Covid-19 vaccination favoured the breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infections in vaccinated subjects. To assess the impact of vaccination, we determined the severity of infection in hospitalised patients according to vaccine status. Methods: We performed a retrospective observational study on patients hospitalised in 10 centres with a SARS-CoV-2 infection (Delta variant) from July to November 2021 by including all patients who had completed their primary vaccination at least 14 days before hospital admission and the same number of completely unvaccinated patients. We assessed the impact of vaccination and other risk factors through logistic regression. Results: We included 955 patients (474 vaccinated and 481 unvaccinated). Vaccinated patients were significantly older (75.0 [63.25-84.0] vs. 55.0 [38.0-73.0]; p < 0.001), more frequently males (55.1% (261/474) vs. 46.4% (223/481); p = 0.009), and had more comorbidities (2.0 [1.0-3.0] vs. 1.0 [0.0-2.0]; p < 0.001). Vaccinated patients were less often admitted for Covid-19 (59.3% (281/474) vs. 75.1% (361/481); p < 0.001), had less extended lung lesions (≤25%: 64.3% (117/182) vs. 38.4% (88/229); p < 0.001), required oxygen less frequently (57.5% (229/398) vs. 73.0% (270/370); p < 0.001), at a lower flow (3.0 [0.0-8.7] vs. 6.0 [2.0-50.0] L/min, p < 0.001), and for a shorter duration (3 [0.0-8.0] vs. 6 [2.0-12.0] days, p < 0.001)., and required less frequently intensive care unit admission (16.2% (60/370) vs. 36.0% (133/369); p < 0.001) but had comparable mortality in bivariate analysis (16.7% (74/443) vs. 12.2% (53/433); p = 0.075). Multivariate logistic regression showed that vaccination significantly decreased the risk of death (0.38 [0.20-0.70](p = 0.002), ICU admission (0.31 [0.21-0.47](p < 0.001) and oxygen requirement (0.16 [0.10-0.26](p < 0.001), even among older patients or with comorbidities. Conclusions: Among patients hospitalised with a delta variant SARS-CoV-2 infection, vaccination was associated with less severe forms, even in the presence of comorbidities.

International audience; AIM: Drug shortage is a growing global health issue. The aim of the study was to evaluate the consequences of drug shortages on patient safety based on data recorded in the French Pharmacovigilance Database. METHODS: All cases involving drug shortages reported from 1985 to the end of 2019 were extracted from the database. RESULTS: Following the selection process, 462 cases were included. The number of cases increased significantly from 2004 to 2019. Cases mainly involved drugs from the nervous system (22.1%, CI95[17.5;27.0]), the cardiovascular system (16.4%, CI95[11.9;21.4]), and anti-infectives for systemic use (14.3%, CI95[9.7;19.2]) ATC classes. Most of the cases reported an adverse drug reaction (ADR) belonging to the SOC nervous system (21%, CI95[18;24]), skin and subcutaneous (14%, CI95[11;17]), general (13%, CI95[10;17]), and gastrointestinal (8%, CI95[5;11]) disorders. Disease worsening was observed in 15.9% of the cases, mostly related to a lack of efficacy of the replacement drug. Half of the cases were considered as serious. Evolution was favourable in 79.4% of the cases. Death and/or life-threatening situations were reported in 5.8% of the cases. Medication errors (ME) were identified in 51 cases (11%), mostly occurring at the administration step and involving a human factor. CONCLUSION: This study emphasises the clinical impact of drug shortage in terms of ADRs, ME and inefficiency. These observations underline the importance of a global health policy programme to limit the occurrence of drug shortages and to reinforce the information provided to patients and health care professionals in this context to limit risk.

International audience; The first demonstration of a nanoscaled titanium zirconium nitride (TiZrN2) single-phase isolated during the preparation of polymer-derived silicon nitride (Si3N4) matrix nanocomposites is discussed. We employed a polysilazane, which was chemically modified with Zr[N(CH2CH3)2]4 and Ti[N(CH3)2]4 then ammonolyzed before a pyrolysis step under ammonia (1000 °C) and a heat-treatment in flowing nitrogen (1000–1700 °C). Based on a careful control of the precursor chemistry in the early stage of the process and nano-/microstructural investigations of the material performed during its preparation, we were able to identify TiZrN2 nanocrystals with a size as low as 9 nm distributed in α- and β-Si3N4 phases at a temperature as low as 1500 °C. We particularly proved that the TiZrN2 nanophase could be generated because of the use of the polysilazane evoluting towards a covalently-bonded Si3N4 matrix . This unique nanostructure is expected to provide particular functionality to Si3N4 as noble metal-free catalysts and components with high plasmonic quality.

International audience; BackgroundCaregivers encounter difficulties differentiating fear and pain experienced by children and tend to interpret what children may feel, often resulting in inadequate pain management. While many pain self-assessment scales are available, there is no validated self-assessment fear scale for children.Methods: The aim of this prospective study was to validate, in children aged 4 to 12 years, the psychometric properties of our scale. In a first part, in a school setting, five exercises were given to 484 children in order to validate the expression of fear, grade the intensity of the faces, the ability to discriminate the faces and the equality of the intervals. The scale's reproducibility was studied by assessing the children's fear in everyday situations at two different time points.In a second part, in a hospital setting, the aim was to test the scale's feasibility. Sixty children admitted to one emergency care department self-assessed their fear with the Scary Scale.FindingsThe expression of fear was validated by 57.64% (p < 0.0001) of the children in comparison with three other emotions (pain, surprise, sadness).The 7–9 year-olds validated the other properties (gradation, discrimination, equality, reproducibility). The 4–6 year-olds failed to validate the gradation exercise, but succeeded with the others.In the hospital, 95% of children self-assessed their fear using the scale.DiscussionOur self-assessment fear scale was validated in children aged 7–12 years specifically and was readily feasible in the hospital. This paper examines whether environmental and social (ES) activities affect the resiliency of firms during the COVID-19 crisis. We study a sample of 330 firms operating in five developed countries: Canada, France, Japan, the UK and the US. Our analysis shows that US firms with a high ES ranking experienced a significantly lower stock price range volatility during the Covid stock market rundown of February-March 2020. Such findings also hold for Japanese firms but only later on after the introduction of government support. In terms of returns, compared to their peers with a low ES ranking, Japanese and UK stock prices with a high ES ranking suffered more during and after the market rundown. For other countries, we do not find significant differences in stock price behavior based on ES ratings. Our findings suggest that engaging with ES activities is not associated with a better or worse performance during crisis times, which has important implications for investors and managers. International audience; The 3' regulatory region (3'RR) located downstream from the Cα gene is the conductor of transcription, accessibility, and remodeling of the IgH locus at mature B-cell stages. Convincing demonstrations of the essential contributions of the 3'RR in B-cell lymphomagenesis have been provided by mouse models which bring the oncogene c-Myc under the 3'RR transcriptional control. In this study, we developed a mouse model of CD138+ plasma B-cell lymphomas. If the KI of c-myc directly into Cα just 5' to the 3'RR in iMycCα mice produced B-cell lymphomas with low kinetics, we enforced c-myc production in iMycCα mice by the generation of homozygous c-myc transgenic mice. Our results show that homozygous iMycCα mice lead to a mouse model of plasma CD138+ B-cell lymphomas with interesting and wide transcriptomic similarities to human multiple myeloma and appropriated emergence kinetics that can be used to test new experimental therapeutic approaches.

International audience; PURPOSE: Severely ill patients affected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) develop circulatory failure. We aimed to report patterns of left and right ventricular dysfunction in the first echocardiography following admission to intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: Retrospective, descriptive study that collected echocardiographic and clinical information from severely ill COVID-19 patients admitted to 14 ICUs in 8 countries. Patients admitted to ICU who received at least one echocardiography between 1st February 2020 and 30th June 2021 were included. Clinical and echocardiographic data were uploaded using a secured web-based electronic database (REDCap). RESULTS: Six hundred and seventy-seven patients were included and the first echo was performed 2 [1, 4] days after ICU admission. The median age was 65 [56, 73] years, and 71% were male. Left ventricle (LV) and/or right ventricle (RV) systolic dysfunction were found in 234 (34.5%) patients. 149 (22%) patients had LV systolic dysfunction (with or without RV dysfunction) without LV dilatation and no elevation in filling pressure. 152 (22.5%) had RV systolic dysfunction. In 517 patients with information on both paradoxical septal motion and quantitative RV size, 90 (17.4%) had acute cor pulmonale (ACP). ACP was associated with mechanical ventilation (OR\,>\,4), pulmonary embolism (OR\,>\,5) and increased PaCO(2). Exploratory analyses showed that patients with ACP and older age were more likely to die in hospital (including ICU). CONCLUSION: Almost one-third of this cohort of critically ill COVID-19 patients exhibited abnormal LV and/or RV systolic function in their first echocardiography assessment. While LV systolic dysfunction appears similar to septic cardiomyopathy, RV systolic dysfunction was related to pressure overload due to positive pressure ventilation, hypercapnia and pulmonary embolism. ACP and age seemed to be associated with mortality in this cohort.

International audience; One of the major current ecological challenges is to understand how to reconcile human activities with biodiversity conservation concerns. This issue is particularly relevant in freshwater ecosystems where biodiversity is globally under severe threat. Artificial waterbodies, such as ditch networks, are part of the few remaining wetlands in agricultural landscapes and hence play a crucial role in maintaining aquatic biodiversity in these landscapes. We investigated the responses of adult Odonata assemblages at different spatial scales in a marshland crossed by ditches to two factors expected to be pivotal influences on assemblages. At the local scale, this was mainly the water regime in ditches and, at a broader scale, the composition of the landscape. Both taxonomic alpha and beta diversity, and functional trait composition were considered as response variables. Significant differences were found between the responses of the two Odonata suborders. We showed that Zygoptera species richness decreased and species turnover increased with the duration of drying episodes in ditches. Geographical distances between local assemblages as well as landscape characteristics, notably woodland cover, meadow cover and ditch network length, also significantly shaped the distribution of Zygoptera. For Anisoptera, species richness was not explained by environmental variables and beta diversity was associated only with local conditions; it increased with increasing dissimilarity in water quality and riparian vegetation. We also found evidence of functional trait syndromes (combinations of correlated traits) in Odonata assemblages, but without clear relationships to environmental gradients. This study reveals the structuring role of water regime for Odonata in ditch networks and demonstrates the need to jointly consider environmental variables at different spatial scales to properly understand the distribution of Odonata. Our findings have important conservation implications as the water regime is heavily managed in such ecosystems. Even though the relationship between functional composition and environmental gradients was found to be of limited extent in this study, we discuss how it might provide new insights for Odonata assemblage structure and be useful, locally, for stakeholders and managers. Lastly, we call for further multiscale investigations considering both the taxonomic and functional responses of Odonata assemblages (functional analyses with multiple traits and several species being scarce in this taxonomic group) in other anthropogenic freshwater ecosystems to gather more lessons for their conservation.

International audience; Smoking cessation is a global public health issue. Nicotine dependence is a dynamic process that is not limited to physical dependence. Hypnosis can be helpful in the global management of smoking cessation. We explored this effect by comparing the effects of hypnosis and nicotine-replacement therapies (NRT) on tobacco withdrawal.Thirty participants were included in this comparative-randomized pilot study in parallel controlled groups after ethical validation. Participants were recruited by a general practitioner and had standardized consultations with addiction and hypnosis specialists and adapted treatment. The evolution of withdrawal symptoms was compared using the Cigarette Withdrawal Scale-21 for one month after smoking cessation in an adult tobacco-addict population wishing to stop smoking and receiving either NRT or hypnosis, both supported by motivational interviews. Craving intensity (French version of the Tobacco Craving Questionnaire), nicotine dependence (Fagerström), tobacco consumption, anxiety (Hamilton scale), and depression (Montgomery-Asberg scale) were also evaluated. Hypnosis appeared to have an influence on reducing the number of smoked cigarettes, whereas NRT appeared to influence markers of both physical and psychic dependence. A complementarity of hypnosis and NRT may be a viable therapeutic alternative to reduce the intensity of withdrawal symptoms after voluntary smoking cessation. A study on a larger population with a longer follow-up is needed to assess the advantages of each method to quit smoking.

We summarized the effectiveness of home-based active video game interventions on physical and cognitive functions, as well as quality of life in adults with Parkinson's disease. We also assessed the feasibility, safety, adherence, and retention of benefits of these interventions.We searched studies in eight databases from 1st March to 30th November 2020. Two authors independently performed the selection, data extraction and risk of bias evaluation (PROSPERO ID: CRD42020178138).Nine studies were included in this systematic review (412 participants). All in all, home-based active video games were found effective in improving gait and balance functions in people with Parkinson's disease, equivalent to usual care and conventional therapy. No conclusion can be drawn on cognition and quality of life. Home-based active video games seemed feasible, safe, and were enjoyed by people with Parkinson's disease. The optimal dose, the need for supervision and the retention of benefits of these interventions are still to be determined. These results should be interpreted carefully, considering the limited number of included studies and their small sample sizes, the widespread heterogeneity of included studies and their medium average methodological quality.Future research should focus on the effects of home-based active video games on impairments specific to Parkinson's disease, such as falls, freezing of gait and attention, as well as the dose, need for supervision and retention of the benefits of these interventions.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONHome-based active video games are effective in improving motor functions in people with PD.No conclusion can be drawn regarding cognition in people with PD.No conclusion can be drawn regarding quality of life in people with PD.Home-based active video games seem feasible and safe, and are enjoyed by people with PD.The dose, need for control and retention of the benefits still need to be determined.

International audience; Light and scanning electron microscope observations on the genus Fontina gen. nov. from a thermo-mineral spring of the Massif Central (France) are presented. Based on morphology, the new genus shows features that have not been described previously, such as the stria pattern, interrupted at the valve face/mantle junction and composed of one long, slit-like areola on both valve face and mantle. Externally, areolae are closed by hymenes. Fontina arverna sp. nov. is described as the typus generis of Fontina. This new genus was compared with some similar freshwater genera such as Adlafia, Chamaepinnularia, Genkalia, Germainiella, Microfissurata and Nupela. So far, we are unable to establish an evolutionary link or cladistic association with currently known genera. The new genus is described from a sampling site characterized by high conductivity and high carbonate concentration, brackish conditions and whose water originates deep in the crust (high lithium concentration).

Simple fabrication and 3D-printing methods are used to generate tubes and filaments from self-assembled gels, which can be loaded in situ with gold nanoparticles, with the resulting gels encouraging stem cell proliferation.

Pluto, Titan, and Triton make up a unique class of solar system bodies, with icy surfaces and chemically reducing atmospheres rich in organic photochemistry and haze formation. Hazes play important roles in these atmospheres, with physical and chemical processes highly dependent on particle sizes, but the haze size distribution in reducing atmospheres is currently poorly understood. Here we report observational evidence that Pluto’s haze particles are bimodally distributed, which successfully reproduces the full phase scattering observations from New Horizons. Combined with previous simulations of Titan’s haze, this result suggests that haze particles in reducing atmospheres undergo rapid shape change near pressure levels ~0.5 Pa and favors a photochemical rather than a dynamical origin for the formation of Titan’s detached haze. It also demonstrates that both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres can produce multi-modal hazes, and encourages reanalysis of observations of hazes on Titan and Triton., Pluto’s haze is revealed to have two types of particles: small spherical organic haze particles and micron-size fluffy aggregates. The persistence of these two populations has important implications for haze formation and properties on icy worlds.

International audience; Objectives: Glioma grading using maching learning on magnetic resonance data is a growing topic. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the classification of glioma discriminates between low grade gliomas (LGG), grades I, II; and high grade gliomas (HGG), grades III, IV, leading to major issues in oncology for therapeutic management of patients. A well-known dataset for machine-based grade prediction is the MICCAI Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) dataset. However this dataset is not divided into WHO-defined LGG and HGG, since it combines grades I, II and III as “lower grades gliomas”, while its HGG category only presents grade IV glioblastoma multiform. In this paper we want to train a binary grade classifier and investigate the consistency of the original BraTS labels with radiologic criteria using machine-aided predictions.Material and methods: Using WHO-based radiomic features, we trained a SVM classifier on the BraTS dataset, and used the prediction score histogram to investigate the behaviour of our classifier on the lower grade population. We also asked 5 expert radiologists to annotate BraTS images between low (as opposed to lower) grade and high grade glioma classes, resulting in a new groundtruth.Results: Our first training reached 84.1% accuracy. The prediction score histogram allows us to identify the radiologically high grade patients among the original lower grade population of the BraTS dataset. Training another SVM on our new radiologically WHO-aligned groundtruth shows robust performances despite important class imbalance, reaching 82.4% accuracy.Conclusion: Our results highlight the coherence of radiologic criteria for low grade versus high grade classification under WHO terms. We also show how the histogram of prediction scores and crossed prediction scores can be used as tools for data exploration and performance evaluation. Therefore, we propose to use our radiological groundtruth for future development on binary glioma grading.

International audience; Importance: Several studies conducted worldwide (mostly in Western countries) highlighted the negative effects of problematic internet use, particularly among adolescents aged 12 to 17, including depression, impulsivity, aggression, and social fear and avoidance. In Lebanon, literature on the prevalence and impact of problematic internet use among adolescents is limited.Objective: This study aim was to study the association between problematic internet use and depression, impulsivity, anger, aggression and social phobia among Lebanese adolescents.Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 1103 young adolescents (14-17 years), recruited from October 2017 till April 2018. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT) was used to evaluate the level of problematic internet use. Data were analyzed using the MANCOVA analysis. The main independent variable of interest was the IAT, while the dependent variables included the psychological scales.Results: The multivariate analysis taking the psychological scales as the dependent variables and the problematic internet use (IAT score) as an independent variable, showed that problematic internet use was associated with higher depression, impulsivity, aggression, anger, hostility and social anxiety.Interpretation: Problematic internet use has become an important health issue that should not be overlooked, particularly because of the increased use of the internet by adolescents. Educational programs on early exposure to the internet should be developed.

International audience; Background: Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) are among the most common and feared side effects of cancer treatments. Their presence has a negative impact on the quality of life and morbidity associated with the disease. Despite increasingly effective antiemetic treatments, 40% of cancer patients experience CINV during the acute or delayed phase of their treatment. This distressing experience lived through by a large number of people makes it a priority in the improvement of cancer patients and a daily concern for nurses in cancer care units. In an attempt to alleviate this problem, the idea of using aromatherapy as supportive care has led the authors to research the knowledge available on this subject. Objective: The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the existing scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of respiratory aromatherapy on CINV in addition to standard treatment compared with their recommended management in people with cancer. Design: Systematic review. Methods: This review was conducted according to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines and queried six databases (PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Database, Embase, CINAHL, and Google Scholar). An analysis of the risk of bias using the Cochrane "Risks of Bias" tools and a qualitative synthesis of the results of the studies were carried out. Results: Eleven studies were included, nine in adults and two in children. Seven out of nine studies showed statistically significant results in adults with either direct or dry inhalation. Four out of seven alleviated both nausea and vomiting thanks to peppermint, ginger essential oil; three decreased nausea only with chamomilla, ginger or cardamom essential oil. Atmospheric diffusion and the use of inhaled aromatherapy in children did not show any benefit. Conclusions: Results appear promising for the use of direct inhaled aromatherapy in the management of CINV. However, most of the studies found the women concerned suffered from gynecologic cancers and had certain methodological limitations. Indeed, small samples and a wide variety of interventions were studied (different essential oils, number of drops of essential oils used, method of administration, etc.), making it impossible so far to generalize these results. Studies with a more robust methodology and larger samples will make it possible to confirm the potential usefulness of this complementary treatment.

International audience; The invertebrate Galleria mellonella has increasingly and widely been used in the last few years to study complex host-microbe interactions. Aspergillus fumigatus is one of the most pathogenic fungi causing life-threatening diseases in humans and animals. Galleria mellonella larvae has been proven as a reliable model for the analysis of pathogenesis and virulence factors, enable to screen a large number of A. fumigatus strains. This review describes the different uses of G. mellonella to study A. fumigatus and provides a comparison of the different protocols to trace fungal pathogenicity. The review also includes a summary of the diverse mutants tested in G. mellonella, and their respective contribution to A. fumigatus virulence. Previous investigations indicated that G. mellonella should be considered as an interesting tool even though a mammalian model may be required to complete and verify initial data.

International audience; Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) infects 95% of the world’s population and persists latently in the body. It immortalizes B-cells and is associated with lymphomas. LCLs (lymphoblastoid cell lines, EBV latency III B-cells) inhibit anti-tumoral T-cell response following PD-L1 overexpression (programmed death-ligand 1 immune checkpoint). Many cancer cells, including some DLBCLs (diffuse large B-cell lymphomas), also overexpress PD-L1. Immunotherapies are based on inhibition of PD-L1/PD-1 interactions but present some dose-dependent toxicities. We aim to find new strategies to improve their efficiency by decreasing PD-L1 expression. Fucoidan, a polysaccharide extracted from brown seaweed, exhibits immunomodulatory and anti-tumor activities depending on its polymerization degree, but data are scarce on lymphoma cells or immune checkpoints. LCLs and DLBCLs cells were treated with native fucoidan (Fucus vesiculosus) or original very-low-molecular-weight fucoidan formulas (vLMW-F). We observed cell proliferation decrease and apoptosis induction increase with vLMW-F and no toxicity on normal B- and T-cells. We highlighted a decrease in transcriptional and PD-L1 surface expression, even more efficient for vLMW than native fucoidan. This can be explained by actin network alteration, suggesting lower fusion of secretory vesicles carrying PD-L1 with the plasma membrane. We propose vLMW-F as potential adjuvants to immunotherapy due to their anti-proliferative and proapoptotic effects and ability to decrease PD-L1 membrane expression.

International audience; Springs are abundant and present worldwide and are among the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the biodiversity of seventy-nine (79) mineral saline springs situated in the French Massif Central, focusing on the species richness and the estimated richness and also on the diatom community composition. The influence of physical and chemical factors on both richness and communities was analyzed in order to have a better knowledge of the diatom ecological preferences and identify species typical of saline springs. Since December 2014, an on-going inventory of mineral springs has been in progress. For each spring, physical and chemical characteristics were measured, and benthic diatoms were sampled. The richness was the lowest in the springs presenting a man-made construction around the emergence. In the other springs, the highest richness was associated with the lowest lithium, sodium, total dissolved solid concentrations, and conductivity. Mineralization and some ions (bromine, calcium, chloride, fluoride, lithium, potassium, and sodium) were found to be the most critical drivers of diatom community composition. Some diatom species were typical of specific abiotic conditions, such as Navicula sanctamargaritae, which was associated with the highest potassium concentration. These species could appear as bio-indicators of these conditions.

In the present research, zeolite is used for the removal of toxic Congo red dye from water solution. The effects of different operating conditions such as hydrogen potential (pH), contact time (time), zeolite dose (D), initial dye concentration (C0), and ionic strength (I) are investigated for Congo red adsorption under batch mode. It was found that the adsorption process was greatly affected by the initial pH of the dye solution. The removal efficiency decreased from 97.68 to 5.22% when the pH varied from 3 to 5; thus, acidic conditions clearly improve Congo red adsorption on zeolite. At pH 3, an increase in C0 and I and decrease in D resulted in an increase in the adsorption capacity qe. The effects of these three parameters and their interactions were also investigated using the 23 full factorial design experiments approach where qe was chosen as the response. The results obtained from this method followed by the analysis of variance and the Student’s t-test show that, the influence of these parameters on dye adsorption process are in the order I < C0 < D. The kinetic studies revealed that adsorption follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherms experimental data were analyzed using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms models. The Freundlich isotherm was the best-fit model to the experimental data. The fitting of kinetics and isotherm models was evaluated by using non-linear modeling, R2, MSE, and RMSE.

International audience; Prior studies have examined the ability of Moringa oleifera (MO) seed extract, among other natural coagulants, to remove several types of dyes. MO has been proven to have a high capacity to remove some anionic dyes. The aim of the present study is to explore the possible use of aqueous and saline extracts of MO as biocoagulants for the removal of Mordant Black (MB11) from aqueous solution. Their performances were compared to that of aluminum sulfate (alum). To do so, various operating parameters were investigated such as coagulant dose (100–600 mg/L), pH (3–11), initial dye concentration (100–350 mg/L), sodium chloride concentration (0.2–2 M), and sedimentation time (15–90 min). The maximum percentages of MB11 removal were found to be 98.65%, 80.12%, and 95.02% for alum, aqueous extract of MO (MOPW), and saline extract of MO (MOPS), respectively, at around pH 6.5 and for coagulant doses of 400 mg/L (alum) and 500 mg/L (MOPW and MOPS). The coagulation-flocculation mechanism of biocoagulants was hypothesized to be adsorption and charge neutralization. The two biocoagulants (MOPW and MOPS) showed an interesting versatility towards pH counter to alum which was very sensitive to this parameter. pH variations were measured for the three coagulants and proven to be negligible for the biocoagulants. Faster sedimentation time was recorded when MOPW and MOPS were used, suggesting the existence of larger quickly settleable flocs. Considering their high coagulative capacity, rapid and cost-effective preparation, and eco-friendly character, MO extracts can be considered as powerful alternatives to aluminum sulfate in the remediation of MB11 from wastewaters. © 2022 by the authors.

International audience; This paper studies the rheological behavior of aqueous suspensions of fine grained (d50 = 200 nm) alumina. Rheological measurements were performed on suspensions containing various amounts of solid and 0.26 wt% of ammonium polymethacrylate in order to ensure a good state of dispersion. Brownian motions, colloidal interactions and hydrodynamic interactions dictate the behavior. The viscosity is mainly influenced by the shear rate and by the solid volume fraction. A Maron and Pierce model was used to describe this last effect in the hydrodynamic regime. The maximum packing fraction was found to be 40 vol%. This value is related to the colloidal stability as described by the DLVO theory. In fact, the maximum packing fraction leads to a surface-to-surface separation distance of about 46 nm because of the repulsive potential. Finally, a dimensionless approach was achieved to quantitatively identify, on the rheogram, the different flow regimes associated to each dominant interaction type.

The formation of iron- and/or manganese-rich dark patinas on sandstones is a common natural phenomenon that occurs also on building stones. Lunéville château, in eastern France, presents such patinas that developed either under natural conditions (rain and time) or after an accidental fire and exposure to significant amounts of water as part of attempts to extinguish the fire. The present study aimed at characterizing both types of patinas in an effort to determine their formation mechanisms and Mn sources. In both cases, Mn required for patina formation likely derives from the reductive dissolution of Mn-rich minerals present in pristine sandstones, as suggested by the contrasting mineralogy and chemistry of Mn-rich phases present in the bulk and in the patina of a given building block. Reduced Mn species then migrate to the exposed surface of building blocks where they are re-oxidized via undetermined processes. Patinas developing “naturally” over time result from the alternation of wetting-reducing and drying-oxidizing cycles and appear to be composed of birnessite. Patinas formed after the 2003 fire result from this single accidental event and form a much thinner, heterogeneous, and discontinuous layer of poorly crystalline lithiophorite at the sandstone surface (∼ 0–150 µm compared to ∼ 300–600 µm for “natural” patinas). The lack of Mn-rich patinas on areas of Lunéville château is likely related to the lower Mn content of pristine sandstone blocks.

International audience; Tetraselmis sp. strain MD-01, a microalga isolated from the Tunisian marine coast, has been studied for autotrophic lipids production with two stage process. This strategy was conducted for maximum cells production under moderated conditions (2.12 g L−1), followed by cultivation under stressed conditions to induce lipid synthesis. High irradiance (300 μmol m−2 s−1) and nitrogen depletion (S mode) showed better carotenoids accumulation and lower chlorophylls content in microalgae compared to those obtained in biomass cultivated under high irradiance (Sg mode). This two-stage strategy allowed to increase of lipid content in cells cultivated in Sg and S modes from 18% DW (stage I) to 50 and 61.5% DW (stage II), respectively, with an increase of saturated and long chain fatty acids levels. Based on fluorometry analyses, an increase of lipids in Nile-Red stained cells and a decrease of chlorophylls auto-fluorescence under stressed conditions were shown. From spectral data, the lipids: amide I ratio obtained from S mode was 2.17 and 4.45 times higher than that from Sg mode and control conditions, respectively. These results revealed the potential of Tetraselmis strain MD-01 for biodiesel production.

International audience; This work focuses on identifying the rate-determining step of oxygen transport through La0.5Sr0.5Fe0.7Ga0.3O3-δ membranes with symmetric and asymmetric architectures. The best oxygen semipermeation fluxes are 3.4 10−3 mol. m-2.s-1 and 6.3 10−3 mol. m-2.s-1 at 900 °C for the symmetric membrane and asymmetric membrane with a modified surface. The asymmetric membrane with a modified surface leads to an increase of approximately 7 times the oxygen flux compared to that obtained with the La0.5Sr0.5Fe0.7Ga0.3O3-δ dense membrane without surface modification. This work also shows that the oxygen flux is mainly governed by gaseous oxygen diffusion through the porous support of asymmetric La0.5Sr0.5Fe0.7Ga0.3O3-δ membranes.

International audience; Objective: Epilepsy is a major neurological disorder that requires long-term medical treatment. Once epilepsy is diagnosed, people with epilepsy face many difficulties in accessing treatment (treatment gap). Our objective was to assess the situation regarding the availability, price, affordability, and quality of anti-seizure medication (ASM), which are major determinants of access to treatment. Method: A cross-sectional study was performed in provincial/district hospitals and private pharmacies in urban and rural areas in Cambodia. Data on ASM availability and price were obtained through drug suppliers. Affordability was estimated as the number of day wages the lowest-paid government employee must work to purchase a monthly treatment. Samples of ASM were collected, and the quality of ASM was assessed through Medicine Quality Assessment Reporting Guidelines. Results: Out of 138 outlets visited, only 72 outlets (52.2% [95% CI 43.5-60.7]) had at least one ASM available. Phenobarbital 100 mg was the most available (35.5%), followed by carbamazepine 200 mg (21.7%), phenobarbital 50 mg (11.6%), sodium valproate 500 mg (9.4%), and phenytoin 100 mg (9.4%). In provincial/district hospitals, ASM was provided free of charge. In private pharmacies, affordability for phenobarbital 50 mg and 100 mg was the best, with 0.6 and 0.5 days, respectively, compared to phenytoin 100 mg (1.8 days), and other ASM. No counterfeit ASM was found in this study. Phenytoin sample presented the worst quality (33.0%) compared to carbamazepine (27.8%), and other ASM. Significance: A lack of access to affordable and effective ASM due to low availability and poor quality of ASM was identified. Our research highlights the need for future policy efforts to ensure the quality of ASM and improve their availability. This can be achieved by involving the calculation of their annual needs for these drugs and increasing the national production of ASM.

International audience; Visuospatial memory (VSM) performance depends on intrinsic (biopsychosocial parameters) and extrinsic (space) factors. We aimed at characterizing the determinants of VSM performance according to space. Young healthy adults, 20 males and 41 females (23 ± 3 years old), were assessed for VSM performance through a pathway learning task, in reaching (eCorsi Block Tapping task) and walking space (Virtual Walking Corsi Task). We evaluated psychosocial factors through seven questionnaires - Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Fatigue Severity Scale, Profile of the Mood States, 2nd edition, short version, Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations, Measurement of Ambiguity Tolerance, Motives for Physical Activities Measure-Revised, mental rotation capabilities and locomotor characteristics (physical activity level through embedded trackers and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and gait parameters). The most explanatory biopsychosocial determinants of VSM performance were i) mental rotation capabilities and fatigue indicator in reaching space, and ii) mental rotation capabilities and physical activity level (tracked active energy expenditure only) in walking space. These results suggest that specific parameters should be preferred for the evaluation and strengthening of VSM capabilities in both reaching or walking spaces.

This work describes the preparation of concentrated alumina suspensions based on bio-sourced additives with a low environmental impact and with the rheological properties adapted to the tape casting process. Natural polysaccharides extracted from plants and fruits (pectin, psyllium…) were characterized (molar weight) and identified as promising binders for substituting the classical organic binders from petrochemical industry. The rheological behavior of the additives and of the suspensions containing these bio-sourced additives was studied in flow and in oscillations. The mechanical properties of the green tapes obtained with the different bio-sourced binders were determined from tensile experiment. This paper studies the relations between the nature of the binder, the rheological behavior of the suspension, the ability to tape cast the suspensions and the final properties of the green and sintered tapes.

International audience; Due to their cost-effectiveness, low toxicity, and naturally renewable properties, bio-coagulants for water treatment are gaining popularity. In this context, four bio-coagulants were tested for their ability in turbidity reduction in a synthetic bentonite suspension: Opuntia ficus indica (OFI) and Moringa oleifera (MO) seeds, two well-established vegetal materials in the domain of bio-coagulation, and Algerian Aloe vera (AV) and Pinus halepensis seeds (PHS), both of which have received very few or no study in turbidity reduction in water and wastewater. A comparative study was conducted with regard to two well-known inorganic coagulants, ferric chloride and Alum. Extraction salts, pH, coagulant dose, initial turbidity, and aging effects were examined. When compared to chemical coagulants, the four bio-coagulants worked very well, removing approximately 100% of the turbidity at natural pH of 7.5 using optimal doses of 1.5, 3, 3, 3.5, 1.5, and 1.5 mL/200 mL for AV, OFI, MO, PHS, Alum, and FeCl3, respectively, at a broad range of pH (2 to 8), and causing no pH alteration of the treated water. Polysaccharides and proteins involved in inter-particle bridging and charge neutralization may be the active coagulation-flocculation molecules. The four bio-coagulants produced less sludge amount than Alum and Ferric chloride. This research not only shows that MO and OFI are effective in eliminating turbidity, but it also highlights the great potential of Algerian AV and PHS seeds as promising bio-coagulants in the treatment of polluted water.

Riparian zones are the paragon of transitional ecosystems, providing critical habitat and ecosystem services that are especially threatened by global change. Following consultation with experts, 10 key challenges were identified to be addressed for riparian vegetation science and management improvement: (1) Create a distinct scientific community by establishing stronger bridges between disciplines; (2) Make riparian vegetation more visible and appreciated in society and policies; (3) Improve knowledge regarding biodiversity—ecosystem functioning links; (4) Manage spatial scale and context-based issues; (5) Improve knowledge on social dimensions of riparian vegetation; (6) Anticipate responses to emergent issues and future trajectories; (7) Enhance tools to quantify and prioritize ecosystem services; (8) Improve numerical modeling and simulation tools; (9) Calibrate methods and increase data availability for better indicators and monitoring practices and transferability; and (10) Undertake scientific validation of best management practices. These challenges are discussed and critiqued here, to guide future research into riparian vegetation. Background Linkage disequilibrium (LD) is a key parameter to study the history of populations and to identify and fine map quantitative trait loci (QTL) and it has been studied for many years in animal populations. The advent of new genotyping technologies has allowed whole-genome LD studies in most cattle populations. However, to date, long-range LD (LRLD) between distant variants on the genome has not been investigated in detail in cattle. Here, we present the first comprehensive study of LRLD in French beef cattle by analysing data on 672 Charolais (CHA), 462 Limousine (LIM) and 326 Blonde d’Aquitaine (BLA) individuals that were genotyped on the Illumina BovineHD Beadchip. Furthermore, whole-genome LD and haplotype block structure were analysed in these three breeds. Results We computed linkage disequilibrium (r2) values for 5.9, 5.6 and 6.0 billion pairs of SNPs on the 29 autosomes of CHA, LIM and BLA, respectively. Mean r2 values drop to less than 0.1 for distances between SNPs greater than 120 kb. However, for the first time, we detected the existence of LRLD in the three main French beef breeds. In total, 598, 266, and 795 LRLD events (r2 ≥ 0.6) were detected in CHA, LIM and BLA, respectively. Each breed had predominantly population-specific LRLD interactions, although shared LRLD events occurred in a number of regions (55 LRLD events were shared between two breeds and nine between the three breeds). Examples of possible functional gene interactions and QTL co-location were observed with some of these LRLD events, which suggests epistatic selection. Conclusions We identified long-range linkage disequilibrium for the first time in French beef cattle populations. Epistatic selection may be the main source of the observed LRLD events, but other forces may also be involved. LRLD information should be accounted for in genome-wide association studies.

Background and Objective In end-stage kidney disease, high urea levels promote the carbamylation of lysine side chains on a variety of proteins, including albumin. Albumin carbamylation has been identified as a risk factor for mortality and sevelamer led to a decrease in urea levels in dialysis patients. In the present secondary analysis of the NICOREN trial, we investigated the putative impacts of sevelamer and nicotinamide on albumin carbamylation, and the potential correlation between carbamylation and vascular calcifications. Methods All possible carbamylation of circulating albumin were screened for with high-resolution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Levels of three carbamylated peptides were then measured as a guide to the extent of albumin carbamylation. Carbamylation was measured at baseline in 55 patients included in the NICOREN trial and 29 patients at 24 weeks of treatment. Calcifications on plain radiographs were quantified as the Kauppila score and the Adragao score. Results Baseline albumin carbamylation was present at three different sites in subjects with end-stage kidney disease. At baseline, we observed only a correlation between urea and the KQTA carbamylation site in these patients. Albumin carbamylation levels did not decrease after 24 weeks of treatment with either sevelamer or nicotinamide. Furthermore, the proportion of carbamylated serum albumin was not correlated with vascular calcification scores in this population. Conclusions Our results confirmed the presence of carbamylated albumin in patients with end-stage kidney disease and demonstrated the presence of carbamylation beyond the LRVP residues. The results also demonstrated the lack of impact of sevelamer or nicotinamide on albumin carbamylation levels. Therapeutic strategies to lower carbamylation load should probably be focused on direct anti-carbamylation processes and/or potentially anti-inflammatory therapies. The influence of pyrolysis temperature on the oxidation resistance of carbon-rich SiCN ceramics derived from reaction of acrylonitrile with a commercially available oligosilazane (HTT1800) and its subsequent pyrolysis in nitrogen atmosphere was evaluated. The investigation of the oxidation behavior reveals that the final pyrolysis temperature plays an important role in the oxidation resistance of the developed SiCN/C nanocomposites. Increasing the pyrolysis temperature promotes an ordering of the free-carbon phase and consequently, an improvement of the oxidation resistance is noticed. However, starting phase separation during annealing at 1500 °C reduces slightly the protection effect provided by the oxidation resistant Si3N4 phase.

Drinking-water supply remains a significant challenge in tropical areas; to help meet this challenge, the purpose of the present study was to manufacture low-thermal conductivity ceramic membranes suitable for the retention/removal of particles found in non-potable water. These membranes with significant chemical and mechanical resistances were developed from Cameroonian clays, cassava starch, and bovine bone ash. Up to 30% of Cassava starch and bovine bone ash were added to the membrane as porogens (materials used to make pores in membranes). Membranes were manufactured by uniaxial pressing, drying at 105°C, and sintering at 1150°C for 2 h. The effects of various types of porogen on the thermal behavior, microstructure, flexural strength, porosity, and permeability of ceramic membranes were investigated to determine possible applications of those membranes for water filtration in the tropics. The thermal conductivity of membranes produced without a pore-forming agent (SM0) was greater (0.54 Wm–1K–1) than those produced with starch (SM1 and SM3) (0.45–0.40 Wm–1K–1) or bovine bone ash (SM2) (0.49 Wm–1K–1). The total porosity of SM0s (30.72%) was less than those of starch and bovine bone membranes (37.87–45.99%). The average pore size (0.04 μm) of SM2 membranes was the smallest: SM0 (0.09 μm), SM1 (0.10 μm), and SM3 (0.07 μm). The maximum pore size was 0.37 μm, indicating that membranes contain mesopores and macropores. The flexural strengths of SM1 and SM3 membranes (8.85 and 6.97 MPa, respectively) were less than those of SM2 (10.53 MPa) and SM0 (10.28 MPa), and water permeability from 108 L/h·m2 bar to 2198 L/h·m2 bar. International audience; Agricultural abandonment followed by vegetation succession is a major land-use and land-cover (LULC) change in Europe. Such dynamic has critical consequences on biodiversity and ecosystem services (ES) and disservices (EDS). Understanding the perceptions of succession and its effects by local stakeholders is crucial for sound landscape planning. This study addressed these issues, focusing on a territory in the Massif Central region of France where multiple LULC changes have occurred in the last decades, including abandonment. We aim at identifying stakeholders’ perceptions and their drivers regarding old fields as well as the subsequent post-cultural vegetation stages from partial open shrublands to forests. We conducted 29 semi-structured interviews centered on LULC changes with three groups of stakeholders: local decision-makers, land managers, farmers. The terminology used to refer to old fields and the ES and EDS associated with them were recorded along with a thematic analysis. Results revealed the wide range of words and expressions used to refer to old fields, together with inconsistencies between terminology and vegetation stages. ES and EDS associated to old fields varied between stakeholder groups, but were essentially regulating and cultural services. The thematic analysis demonstrated that old fields are considered as a degradation compared to traditional agriculture and a loss of human control on vegetation. Old fields are also perceived as natural ecosystems which persist in front of other LULC changes like artificialization and land use intensification. Those findings show that abandonment should be considered in relation to other LULC changes for land planning decisions? and to the plurality of perceptions of old fields.

One of the principal drivers of biodiversity loss is habitat loss due to land conversion for agriculture. Understanding how agricultural landscapes can be more biodiverse is critical in devising a working lands conservation plan. For at least 20 years, some bird populations in the Galapagos have been in sharp decline, especially in the agricultural zone. Since 2010, we found that the relative abundance of ten out of eleven monitored landbird species has further decreased. We examined the existing habitat structures in the agricultural zone of Santa Cruz, historically established in former areas of native humid forest (Scalesia), and analyzed which structures associated with higher landbird diversity and abundance of four declining species. We conducted standardized point counts and surveyed surrounding vegetation during the breeding period. Landbird diversity was highest in forest and coffee sites and least diverse in pasture sites. Main predictors of higher landbird diversity were forest patch presence, increased abundance of native vegetation and lower elevations. Main predictors of higher landbird relative abundance were percentage of forest in the surrounding 200 m radius buffer and forest patch presence. Our results suggest that to increase the contribution of farmlands to landbird conservation during the reproductive period, habitat management efforts should be targeted at increasing forest patches and/or corridors, particularly within pasture farms. Nevertheless, to ensure sustainability of these measures, economic value to the considered farmlands needs to be secured, social perspectives incorporated and other important threats to landbirds assessed.

International audience; This paper addresses the problem of fixed-time stabilization for a class of fuzzy neutral-type inertial neural networks (FNTINNs) with time-varying delay. By using a novel fixed-time stability theorem for dynamical systems, two different feedback control laws are designed to ensure the fixed-time stabilization of FNTINNs with time-varying delay. The proposed theoretical results can lead to a better upper settling-time estimation compared to existing results. Finally, three simulation examples are provided to illustrate the validity of the proposed theoretical results.

International audience; Background: Assessing clinical progression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) remains a challenge. We evaluated the validity and predictive capabilities of the King’s and Milano-Torino Staging (MiToS) systems in a cohort of patients with ALS to demonstrate their benefit in clinical practice.Methodology: A cohort study was performed by including ALS incident cases in a referral center from 2007 to 2016. The staging systems were determined at time of diagnosis and follow-up. The standardized median times to reach each stage were computed. A multi-state model in the framework of the Cox model evaluated the predictive value of measurements. The survival C-statistic was reported as a measure of prediction ability.Results: Overall, 298 incident cases were included. The King’s and MiToS systems described a progressive increase in the risk of dying with each elapsed stage. However, a lower resolution for late disease description for the King’s system was observed, and late stages overlapped for the MiToS system. Slight variations in the staging systems appeared to improve performance based on validity and prediction abilities: (i) in the King’s (C-statistic ¼ 0.783), by adding a new stage involving the need for both gastrostomy and NIV: (ii) in the MiToS (C-statistic ¼ 0.792), by merging stage 3 and stage 4 into a single stage 3.Conclusion: Both King’s and MiToS are valid systems but have certain limitations. Variations in the staging systems may provide a more suitable framework for describing progression and survival. Further research is needed to evaluate the variations in the staging systems.

Background Team-based and timely integrated palliative care is a gold standard of care in oncology, but issues concerning its optimal organization remain. Palliative Care in Day-Hospital (PCDH) could be one of the most efficient service model of palliative care to deliver interdisciplinary and multidimensional care addressing the complex supportive care needs of patients with advanced cancer. We hypothesize that, compared to conventional outpatient palliative care, PCDH allows the clinical benefits of palliative care to be enhanced. Methods/design This study is a multicentre parallel group trial with stratified randomization. Patient management in PCDH will be compared to conventional outpatient palliative care. The inclusion criteria are advanced cancer patients referred to a palliative care team with an estimated life expectancy of more than 2 months and less than 1 year. The primary endpoint is health-related quality of life with deterioration-free survival based on the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire. The secondary objectives are the following: increase in patient satisfaction with care using the EORTC PATSAT-C33 and OUT-PATSAT7 questionnaires, better understanding of the prognosis using the PTPQ questionnaire and advance care planning; decrease in the need for supportive care among relatives using the SCNS-P&C-F questionnaire, and reduction in end-of-life care aggressiveness. Patients will complete one to five questionnaires on a tablet before each monthly visit over 6 months and will be followed for 1 year. A qualitative study will take place, aiming to understand the specificity of palliative care management in PCDH. Cost-effectiveness, cost-utility and, an additional economic evaluation based on capability approach will be conducted from a societal point of view. Discussion The first strength of this study is that it combines the main relevant outcomes assessing integrated palliative care; patient quality of life and satisfaction; discussion of the prognosis and advance care planning, family well-being and end-of-life care aggressiveness. The second strength of the study is that it is a mixed-method study associating a qualitative analysis of the specificity of PCDH organization, with a medical-economic study to analyse the cost of care. Last few years, mixed cation/mixed halide FA 0.85 Cs 0.15 Pb ( I 0.85 Br 0.15 ) 3 perovskite planar solar cells have shown remarkable performance with power conversion efficiencies over 21%, making them suitable reference systems among highly efficient and potentially low-cost photovoltaic technologies. Many strategies have been proposed to further improve the electronic quality of the perovskite active layers, such as defect passivation or doping, to demonstrate more robust and stable devices. Doping is indeed a relevant strategy for lead substitution, which is also the main concern towards their commercialization. Here, we systematically investigated the effect of cuprous iodide ( CuI ) and triiodobismuthane ( BiI 3 ) partial incorporation into the reference FA 0.85 Cs 0.15 Pb ( I 0.85 Br 0.15 ) 3 double cation and mixed halide perovskite, from a simple single-step deposition procedure from solution. We especially evaluate the influence of our doping strategy on device performance as a function of the atomic fraction ( x ) of Cu or Bi with regard to Pb , using structural, morphological, and optical characterization techniques. Doped perovskite solar cells, either with Cu or Bi , exhibit reduced performance compared to the undoped reference, which is correlated with the evolution of active layer morphology and structure, along with faster recombination kinetics probed by transient photovoltage measurements. This work further demonstrates to achieve better-performing devices using such doping strategies requires a fine control of the defect states, which are inevitably introduced, and that doping by the trivalent metallic cation ( Bi ) largely perturbs the perovskite structure compared to the substitution of monovalent metal ( Cu ).

Chronic disease of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are now approaching those of the general population. Previous, in vitro studies shown that HIV causes arterial injuries resulting in inflammation and atherosclerosis but direct relationship between HIV infection clinical stages and lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) remain controversial. No study assessed, with an accurate method, both the prevalence of LEAD and the influence of HIV severity on LEAD in HIV outpatients in Central Africa. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 HIV-infected outpatients, aged ≥ 40 years in Bujumbura, Burundi. All patients underwent ankle-brachial index (ABI) measurement and LEAD was diagnosed by ABI ≤ 0.9. The prevalence of LEAD was 17.3% (CI 95% 13.2–22.1). The mean age was 49.6 ± 7.1 years. On multivariable analysis, factors associated with LEAD were hypertension (OR = 2.42; 95% CI 1.10–5.80), and stage IV HIV clinical infection (OR = 4.92, 95% CI 1.19–20.36). This is the first study performed on a large HIV population in Central Africa, reporting high LEAD prevalence. It underlines the influence of HIV infection on peripheral atherosclerosis at latest clinical stages and the need for LEAD screening in HIV-infected patients.
