1. Rasch Based Analysis of Oral Proficiency Test Data.

Abstract

This paper examines the rating scale data of oral proficiency tests analyzed by a Rasch Analysis focusing on an item map and factor analysis. In discussing the item map, the difficulty order of six items and students' answering patterns are analyzed using descriptive statistics and measures of central tendency of test scores. The data ranks the items from easiest to most difficult. The factor analysis shows that one factor should be person-related, and the other should be linguistics-related. The result of the Rasch analysis suggests that there needs to be three tests to make a more precise measurement of the students' communicative language ability. The first is a test for monologue ability, the second for multilogue ability, and the third for dialogue ability. To truly understand the students' language ability it must be examined from several different viewpoints. (Contains an abstract in Japanese.) (KFT)

Abstract

To access publisher's full text version of this article click on the hyperlink at the bottom of the page To further understanding of the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) susceptibility, we aggregated published meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies (GWAS), including 26,488 cases and 83,964 controls of European, east Asian, south Asian and Mexican and Mexican American ancestry. We observed a significant excess in the directional consistency of T2D risk alleles across ancestry groups, even at SNPs demonstrating only weak evidence of association. By following up the strongest signals of association from the trans-ethnic meta-analysis in an additional 21,491 cases and 55,647 controls of European ancestry, we identified seven new T2D susceptibility loci. Furthermore, we observed considerable improvements in the fine-mapping resolution of common variant association signals at several T2D susceptibility loci. These observations highlight the benefits of trans-ethnic GWAS for the discovery and characterization of complex trait loci and emphasize an exciting opportunity to extend insight into the genetic architecture and pathogenesis of human diseases across populations of diverse ancestry. Abstract

WOS: 000322848900009, A novel experiment, aiming at demonstrating the feasibility of hypernuclear spectroscopy with heavy ion beams, was conducted. Using the invariant mass method, the spectroscopy of hypernuclear products of Li-6 projectiles on a carbon target at 2 A GeV was performed. Signals of the Lambda-hyperon and H-3(Lambda) and H-4(Lambda) hypernuclei were observed for final states of p + pi(-), He-3 + pi(-) and He-4 + pi(-), respectively, with significance values of 6.7, 4.7 and 4.9 sigma. By analyzing the proper decay time from secondary vertex distribution with the unbinned maximum likelihood fitting method, their lifetime values were deduced to be 262(-43)(+56) +/- 45 ps for Lambda, 183(-32)(+42) +/- 37 ps for H-3(Lambda), and 140(-33)(+48) +/- 35 ps for H-4(Lambda). Abstract

10th International Conference on Hypernuclear and Strange Particle Physics -- SEP 14-18, 2009 -- Tokai, JAPAN, WOS: 000276770500016, The HypHI Phase 0 experiment to demonstrate the feasibility of precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with induced reactions of heavy ion beams was performed at GSI in August and October in 2009, with a projectile of Li-6 at 2 A GeV impinged on carbon graphite target with a thickness of 8 g/cm(2). The experiment mainly aims to reconstruct events of H-3(Lambda), H-4(Lambda) and He-5(Lambda) by observing the pi(-) decay channel. Abstract

L'Oreal Research Objective: To develop a new quality-of-life (QoL) instrument with international validity that specifically assesses cosmetic products and physical appearance.Design: In the first phase, semidirected interviews involved 309 subjects. In the second stage, an acceptability study was performed on 874 subjects. Thereafter, we recruited a total of 3231 subjects, each of whom completed the BeautyQoL questionnaire, a clinical checklist for the skin, the generic QoL 36-Item Short Form Health Survey, and a sociodemographic questionnaire. A retest was performed 8 days later on a subgroup of 652 subjects.Setting: Populations in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Russia, the United States, Brazil, Japan, India, China, and South Africa, representing 16 languages.Participants: The general adult healthy population, including women and men.Main Outcome Measures: Psychometric properties, construct validity, reproducibility, and internal and external consistency.Results: General acceptability was very good in the 16 languages, with a very low rate of no answers. The validation phase reduced the questionnaire to 42 questions structured in the following 5 dimensions that explained 76.7% of the total variance: social life, self-confidence, mood, energy, and attractiveness. Internal consistency was high (Cronbach alpha coefficients, 0.93-0.98). Reproducibility at 8 days was satisfactory in all dimensions. Results of external validity testing revealed that BeautyQoL scores correlated significantly with all 36-Item Short Form Health Survey scores except for physical function.Conclusion: These results demonstrate the validity and reliability of the BeautyQoL questionnaire as the very first international instrument specific to cosmetic products and physical appearance. Abstract

WOS: 000358624800021, Hypernuclear production cross sections have been deduced for the first time with induced reaction of heavy ion beam on fixed target and by means of the invariant mass method by the HypHI Collaboration exploiting the reaction of Li-6 C-12 at 2 A GeV or root S-NN = 2.70 GeV. A production cross section of 3.9 +/- 1.4 mu b for H-3(Lambda) and of 3.1 +/- 1.0 mu b for H-4(Lambda) respectively in the projectile rapidity region was inferred as well as the total production cross section of the Lambda hyperon was measured and found to be equal to 1.7 +/- 0.8 mb. A global fit based on a Bayesian approach was performed in order to include and propagate statistical and systematic uncertainties. Production ratios of H-3(Lambda)/H-4(Lambda), H-3(Lambda)/Lambda and H-4(Lambda)/Lambda were included in the inference procedure. The strangeness population fattors S-3 and S-4 of H-3(Lambda) and H-4(Lambda) respectively were extracted. In addition, the multiplicities of the Lambda hyperon, H-3(Lambda), and H-4(Lambda) together with the rapidity and transversal momentum density distributions of the observed hypemuclei were extracted and reported.
