Student employment has become widespread across many European countries, eliciting the question of how working while studying affects student retention. Previous research mostly agrees that it does by arguing that firstly, students who work long hours (i.e. more than 10 h per week) are more likely to leave university early, and also shows that students without academic family backgrounds (i.e. First-in-Family students) are more likely to enter term-time employment. However, little attention has been paid to investigating the factors predicting students' decision to enter time-consuming employment while studying, and little differentiating between fields of study. Our study, which is based on a sample of 47,228 university students in Austria, reveals that the risk of working long hours differs considerably among various groups of students. Besides financial necessity, the results show that seeking work experience and not coming from an academic family background are also strong predictors for entering time-consuming employment, especially for business students. We suggest that higher education educators should effectively address this issue by working more closely with employers, industry representatives, professionals and students. We stress that universities should support their students in building networks, gaining insights into entry-level work and bridging the gap to graduate employment.

The growing and multiple interests in land as a resource has led to an increase in locally or regionally clashing land use interests on agricultural land which may result in conflicts or open up possibilities for synergies. Urbanization, food production, renewable energy production, environmental protection, and climate protection are known as key land use interests in many regions. The objective of our study is to identify and map land use conflicts, land use synergies, and areas with land use synergy potentials in the federal state of Brandenburg, Germany. We have combined different methods: an analysis of statistical data, an online survey with farmers, a primary document analysis (articles, court documents, policy documents, position papers), and a GIS-based spatial analysis. In our Brandenburg case study, we have identified the use of agricultural land for renewable energy production and environmental protection as the most relevant land use interests leading to conflict situations. We show that land use synergies can make a significant contribution to achieving environmental and climate protection goals, as well as sustainable development. Through the site-adapted and targeted establishment of agroforestry systems, agricultural areas with agri-photovoltaic systems and agricultural parcels with integrated nonproductive areas may lead to land use synergies. Our study contributes to a better understanding of the occurrence of land use conflicts and land use synergies. We highlight the potential for targeted and sustainable environmental and climate protection through the promotion of land use synergies as a result of establishing agroforestry systems and agricultural parcels with agri-photovoltaic systems and integrated nonproductive areas. Aims: Sinus tachycardia potentially leads to a deterioration of cardiac function in critically ill infants. The ultrashort‐acting beta‐blocker landiolol hydrochloride is a new pharmacological option for a selective heart rate (HR) control in patients with sinus tachycardia and heart failure. Methods and results: This study was a monocentric retrospective medical chart review study at the University Children's Hospital Bonn (Germany) from 01 January 2018 until 30 June 2020. This study included a cohort of 62 term and preterm infants with a diagnosis of ventricular dysfunction and/or pulmonary hypertension (PH), in combination with preexisting tachycardia and treatment with landiolol hydrochloride. Infants were allocated to subgroups according to weeks of gestational age (GA): born at <35 weeks of GA (Group A) and born at >35 weeks of GA (Group B). Tachycardia was defined depending on GA (<35 weeks of GA: >170 b.p.m.; ≥ 35 weeks of GA: >150 b.p.m.). The primary endpoint was defined as percentage of patients achieving HR normalization during the first 24 h of landiolol treatment. Twenty‐nine infants were allocated to Group A and 33 infants to Group B. The overall median GA of the infants was 35.3 (23.3/41.3), with 53% female infants. The primary endpoint was achieved in 57 patients (91.9%). The median time to reach target HR was 1.8 (0.3–24) h. The median starting dose of landiolol was 8.8 (3.9–25.3) μk/kg/min, with a median dosing during the first 24 h of landiolol treatment of 9.9 (2.8–35.4) μk/kg/min. The median landiolol dose while achieving the target HR was 10 (2.4–44.4) μk/kg/min. The right ventricular dysfunction improved significantly in both groups 24 h after onset of landiolol infusion (P = 0.001 in Group A and P = 0.045 in Group B). The left ventricular and biventricular dysfunction improved significantly 24 h after onset of landiolol infusion in infants of Group B (P = 0.004 and P = 0.006, respectively). The severity of PH improved significantly after 24 h in infants of Group A (P < 0.001). During landiolol treatment, no severe drug‐related adverse event was noted. Conclusions: The use of landiolol hydrochloride for HR control of non‐arrhythmic tachycardia in critically ill infants is well tolerated. Case summary: A 13-year-old male castrated cat was referred to our clinic for a 2-month history of right hindlimb lameness. Radiographs and CT showed a solid bony mass within the stifle joint. The mass was resected by arthrotomy and osteotomy of the tibial tuberosity. Histopathological examination revealed the diagnosis of osteoma. Recovery from surgery was uneventful. At the 8-week follow-up examination, the cat was free of clinical signs. Relevance and novel information: Feline osteomas are rare; only few cases have been reported. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an intra-articular osteoma in the stifle joint of a cat and description of its surgical resection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The workload of higher education students across different fields of study in comparative perspective is explored. Regression models were used to find out the effects of field of study, controlling for a number of factors that included higher education institution, personal characteristics and other constraints on student time.

A 7‐year 9‐month‐old, neutered, male British shorthair cat was referred for chronic regurgitation and vomiting. Previous symptomatic medical management did not improve these clinical signs. Survey radiographs and abdominal ultrasound revealed no significant abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract. Exploratory laparotomy was performed to obtain gastrointestinal biopsies. Sliding hiatal hernia and an abnormal gastric outpouching at the fundus, measuring 15 × 15 × 15 mm, were identified. Surgical treatment of the hiatal hernia included phrenoplasty, oesophagopexy and left‐sided gastropexy. Additionally, the gastric outpouching was resected. Histopathologic examination of the excised fundic tissue revealed findings consistent with those indicative of a false gastric diverticulum. Postoperative examinations on Days 5 and 10 and telephone follow‐up on Days 30 and 120 revealed a marked reduction in clinical signs. The combination of surgical techniques—phrenoplasty, left‐sided gastropexy, oesophagopexy and gastric diverticulum resection—was found to effectively improve the cat's clinical signs. This article presents information on a new procedure for reducing the area of baldness, the modified major scalp reduction. Significant surgical skill and experience are a prerequisite as the surgery itself is far more complicated than standard reductions. Significantly more local anesthetic is required, as well as specialized operating facilities and monitoring equipment. Postoperatively, there is increased edema, discomfort, and nausea, as well as bruising. As a result of this, the recovery time is prolonged when compared with regular reductions.

The Y-shaped alopecia reduction is used less frequently than indicated. This article outlines the advantages of this pattern, describes the technique of excision in detail, discusses the many variations possible, and advocates greater utilization of this procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
