The computational balance between the model grid resolution and the complexity of the data assimilation technique is essential for accurate aerosol forecasting and obtaining aerosol reanalysis data sets. This study aimed to develop a high‐resolution aerosol assimilation system. A 2‐dimensional variational method (2DVar) was implemented in a non‐hydrostatic icosahedral atmospheric model (NICAM). This new model (NICAM/2DVar), with a global grid size of 56 km, assimilated the observed aerosol optical depth (AOD) that is estimated by combining multiple products of geostationary and polar‐orbital satellites. The model results were evaluated against ground‐based AOD observations on a global scale. They exhibited higher correlations, lower uncertainties, and lower biases than those obtained without the 2DVar. The model also reproduced the observed surface aerosols (PM2.5) mass concentrations, especially in Kyushu, Japan. This occurred because the satellite‐estimated AODs over ocean close to air pollution sources were obtained for many occasions. The correlation coefficient values against the PM2.5 observations increased from 0.44 to 0.65 compared to the results without the 2DVar. The impact of the 2DVar on the forecast results was investigated, and the forecast values for 2–3 days were improved. Because satellite‐retrieved AODs are often lacking over land owing to retrieval difficulties, the use of ground‐based AODs in assimilations is essential for precise processing the of aerosol reanalysis data sets. The computational cost with the use of the 2DVar was only 0.6% more than that without its use. Thus, aerosol assimilation using the NICAM/2DVar can be realistically extended to finer grid sizes. Plain Language Summary: High‐resolution models and data assimilation techniques should be used to obtain more accurate aerosol distributions. We combined a high‐resolution model and an assimilation method at a low computational cost. We also integrated multiple aerosol satellite products. The new procedure successfully reproduced the aerosol observations. The results were significantly better when observations for multiple grids and times were available. Surface measurements on land, for which satellites often lack aerosol signals, are helpful. Furthermore, pregnancy and childcare may be particularly challenging for women. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between patients’ psychosocial characteristics and HRQOL, specifically for recipients who have given birth after their kidney transplant.Patients and methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Participants were 59 kidney transplant recipients who had given birth after transplantation. The tools used were the Medical Outcomes Scale, the Kidney Transplantation Self-Management Scale, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and The Maternal Consciousness Scale.Results: Mean age was 42.3±7.2 years, and the mean age at the time of transplant was 28.2±4.6 years. A total of 82 fetal outcomes were evaluated. Maternal age was 33.6±4.1 years, duration of gestational period was 35.3±3.3 weeks, and birth weight was 2,303.8±592.5 g. HRQOL results were nearly the same as stratified national norms. The physical component summary was positively correlated with the MSPSS (p=0.025), and self-care behavior was positively correlated with the mental component score (p=0.029) and MSPSS (p=0.016). A structural equation model revealed that self-care behavior and the patient–health professions partnership indirectly affected physical health through social support.Conclusion: Self-management indirectly affects physical health through social support. To create a supportive environment through monitoring and consultation with patient families, child-rearing kidney transplant recipients should be encouraged to improve their self-management skills to improve their quality of life. Social support for self-management may contribute to improve HRQOL for women who experience pregnancy and child-rearing after transplantation. Summary: Since the myrtle rust pathogen (Austropuccinia psidii) was first reported (as Puccinia psidii) in Brazil on guava (Psidium guajava) in 1884, it has been found infecting diverse myrtaceous species. Because A. psidii has recently spread rapidly worldwide with an extensive host range, genetic and genotypic diversities were evaluated within and among A. psidii populations in its putative native range and other areas of myrtle rust emergence in the Americas and Hawaii. Microsatellite markers revealed several unique multilocus genotypes (MLGs), which grouped isolates into nine distinct genetic clusters [C1–C9 comprising C1: from diverse hosts from Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and USA‐Hawaii, and USA‐California; C2: from eucalypts (Eucalyptus spp.) in Brazil/Uruguay and rose apple (Syzygium jambos) in Brazil; C3: from eucalypts in Brazil; C4: from diverse hosts in USA‐Florida; C5: from Java plum (Syzygium cumini) in Brazil; C6: from guava and Brazilian guava (Psidium guineense) in Brazil; C7: from pitanga (Eugenia uniflora) in Brazil; C8: from allspice (Pimenta dioica) in Jamaica and sweet flower (Myrrhinium atropurpureum) in Uruguay; C9: from jabuticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora) in Brazil]. The C1 cluster, which included a single MLG infecting diverse host in many geographic regions, and the closely related C4 cluster are considered as a “Pandemic biotype,” associated with myrtle rust emergence in Central America, the Caribbean, USA‐Florida, USA‐Hawaii, Australia, China‐Hainan, New Caledonia, Indonesia and Colombia. Based on 19 bioclimatic variables and documented occurrences of A. psidii contrasted with reduced sets of specific genetic clusters (subnetworks, considered as biotypes), maximum entropy bioclimatic modelling was used to predict geographic locations with suitable climate for A. psidii which are at risk from invasion. The genetic diversity of A. psidii throughout the Americas and Hawaii demonstrates the importance of recognizing biotypes when assessing the invasive threats posed by A. psidii around the globe. Background: This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of fluticasone furoate nasal spray (FFNS), a novel enhanced-affinity intranasal corticosteroid, in Japanese patients with perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR), and to determine the optimal dose.Methods: In this phase II, multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, dose-ranging study, 240 patients (aged >or= 16 years) received once-daily (od) treatment for 2 weeks with either FFNS 110 microg (n = 80), 220 microg (n = 81) or placebo (n = 79). Patients evaluated 3 nasal symptoms using a 4-point scale. Efficacy was assessed as the mean change from baseline in total nasal symptom score (TNSS).Results: Treatment with FFNS resulted in a significantly greater decrease over the treatment period in the mean 3TNSS (sneezing, rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion; p < 0.001 each dose vs. placebo), compared with placebo. More patients receiving FFNS had a markedly or moderately improved impression of treatment than placebo recipients (48% and 49% for FFNS 110 micro and 220 microg, respectively, vs. 18% for placebo; p < 0.001). Nasal rhinoscopy findings revealed significant improvements in mucosal swelling of the inferior turbinate (110 microg: p = 0.004; 220 micro: p = 0.011) and amount of watery rhinorrhea (110 microg: p = 0.003; 220 microg: p < 0.001), compared with placebo. Both doses of FFNS were well tolerated.Conclusions: Both FFNS 110 microg and 220 microg od were effective in alleviating nasal symptoms in Japanese patients with PAR over the 2-week duration of this study. FFNS 110 microg od was selected as the optimal dose for further evaluation in phase III clinical trials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
