Abstract

During the first observing run of LIGO, two gravitational wave events and one lower-significance trigger (LVT151012) were reported by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration. At the time of LVT151012, the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) was pointing at a region of the sky coincident with the high localization probability area of the event and thus permitted us to search for its electromagnetic counterpart (both prompt and afterglow emission). The imaging instruments on-board INTEGRAL (IBIS/ISGRI, IBIS/PICsIT, SPI, and the two JEM-X modules) have been exploited to attempt the detection of any electromagnetic emission associated with LVT151012 over 3 decades in energy (from 3 keV to 8 MeV). The omni-directional instruments on-board the satellite, i.e. the SPI-ACS and IBIS monitored the entire LVT151012 localization region at energies above 75 keV. We did not find any significant transient source that was spatially and/or temporally coincident with LVT151012, obtaining tight upper limits on the associated hard X-ray and $\gamma$-ray radiation. For typical spectral models, the upper limits on the fluence of the emission from any 1 s long-lasting counterpart of LVT151012 ranges from $F_{\gamma}=$3.5$\times$10$^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ (20 - 200 keV) to $F_{\gamma}$=7.1$\times$10$^{-7}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ (75 - 2000 keV), constraining the ratio of the isotropic equivalent energy released in the electromagnetic emission to the total energy of the gravitational waves: $E_{75-2000~keV}/E_{GW}<$4.4$\times$10$^{-5}$. Finally, we provide an exhaustive summary of the capabilities of all instruments on-board INTEGRAL to hunt for $\gamma$-ray counterparts of gravitational wave events, exploiting both serendipitous and pointed follow-up observations. Abstract

In this work we present the most comprehensive INTEGRAL AGN sample which lists 272 objects. Here we mainly use this sample to study the absorption properties of active galaxies, to probe new AGN classes and to test the AGN unification scheme. We find that half (48%) of the sample is absorbed while the fraction of Compton thick AGN is small (~7%). In line with our previous analysis, we have however shown that when the bias towards heavily absorbed objects which are lost if weak and at large distance is removed, as it is possible in the local Universe, the above fractions increase to become 80% and 17%. We also find that absorption is a function of source luminosity, which implies some evolution in the obscuration properties of AGN. Few peculiar classes, so far poorly studied in the hard X-ray band, have been detected and studied for the first time such as 5 XBONG, 5 type 2 QSOs and 11 LINERs. In terms of optical classification, our sample contains 57% of type 1 and 43% of type 2 AGN; this subdivision is similar to that found in X-rays if unabsorbed versus absorbed objects are considered, suggesting that the match between optical and X-ray classification is overall good. Only a small percentage of sources (12%) does not fulfill the expectation of the unified theory as we find 22 type 1 AGN which are absorbed and 10 type 2 AGN which are unabsorbed. Studying in depth these outliers we found that most of the absorbed type 1 AGN have X-ray spectra characterized by either complex or warm/ionized absorption more likely due to ionized gas located in an accretion disk wind or in the biconical structure associated to the central nucleus, therefore unrelated to the toroidal structure. Among 10 type 2 AGN which resulted to be unabsorbed, at most 3-4% is still eligible to be classified as a "true" type 2 AGN., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. Abstract

ESA's hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray observatory INTEGRAL is covering the 3 keV to 10 MeV energy band, with excellent sensitivity during long and uninterrupted observations of a large field of view (~100 square degrees), with ms time resolution and keV energy resolution. It links the energy band of pointed soft X-ray missions such as XMM-Newton with that of high-energy gamma-ray space missions such as Fermi and ground based TeV observatories. Key results obtained so far include the first sky map in the light of the 511 keV annihilation emission, the discovery of a new class of high mass X-ray binaries and detection of polarization in cosmic high energy radiation. For the foreseeable future, INTEGRAL will remain the only observatory allowing the study of nucleosynthesis in our Galaxy, including the long overdue next nearby supernova, through high-resolution gamma-ray line spectroscopy. Science results to date and expected for the coming mission years span a wide range of high-energy astrophysics, including studies of the distribution of positrons in the Galaxy; reflection of gamma-rays off clouds in the interstellar medium near the Galactic Centre; studies of black holes and neutron stars particularly in high- mass systems; gamma-ray polarization measurements for X-ray binaries and gamma-ray bursts, and sensitive detection capabilities for obscured active galaxies with more than 1000 expected to be found until 2014. Abstract

The aim of this study is to characterize the physical attributes of specific sports movements such as, those in women's artistic gymnastics, using objective parameters derived from advanced inertial sensors. A key focus of this research is to establishing the validity, reliability, and reproducibility of data, acquired through state-of-the-art inertial instruments such as K-Track (K-Sport, Italy). The study focused on elements defined as performance-determining, such as acceleration, deceleration, and angular speed in the dynamics of the technical gesture, in this case, the "front tucked somersault" in female artistic gymnastic. Aiming to a more detailed study, the technical act in question was broken down into its three constituent phases: the first and third phases (detachment-ascent and descent-landing of the jump) basically related to a brush leap and the second phase (the frontal turn) to a forward flip. The data obtained from the brush leap confirmed what was expected from an early analysis with the naked eye: significant upward and forward acceleration and development of the jump itself in height and length. On the other hand, with regard to the forward flip, i.e., a forward roll around the transverse axis, after a body tuck-up, we detected rotations around the y-axis that were not expected to be observed, at least with the gyroscope-determined performances, concerning a distinct rotation on the longitudinal axis. Abstract

PBC J2333.9−2343 is a giant radio galaxy at z  = 0.047 with a bright central core associated to a blazar nucleus. If the nuclear blazar jet is a new phase of the jet activity, then the small orientation angle suggests a dramatic change of the jet direction. We present observations obtained between 2018 September and 2019 January (cadence larger than three days) with Effeslberg, SMARTS-1.3m, ZTF, ATLAS, Swift , and Fermi-LAT , and between 2019 April and 2019 July (daily cadence) with SMARTS-1.3 m and ATLAS. Large (>2 ×) flux increases are observed on time-scales shorter than a month, which are interpreted as flaring events. The cross correlation between the SMARTS-1.3 m monitoring in the NIR and optical shows that these data do not show significant time lag within the measured errors. A comparison of the optical variability properties between non-blazars and blazars AGN shows that PBC J2333.9−2343 has properties more comparable to the latter. The SED of the nucleus shows two peaks, that were fitted with a one-zone leptonic model. Our data and modelling show that the high energy peak is dominated by External Compton from the dusty torus with mild contribution from Inverse Compton from the jet. The derived jet angle of 3 deg is also typical of a blazar. Therefore, we confirm the presence of a blazar-like core in the centre of this giant radio galaxy, likely a Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar with peculiar properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

47. Update of the INTEGRAL/IBIS active galactic nuclei catalogue: Deeper on the Galactic plane and wider beyond

Abstract

In this work we have updated the list of active galactic nuclei (AGN) detected by INTEGRAL taking into account the new objects listed in the last published INTEGRAL/IBIS survey. We have collected 83 new AGN, increasing the number of INTEGRAL-detected active galaxies (436) by 19%. Half of these new additions are located behind the Galactic plane, and for most of them we have full X-ray coverage, obtained through archival data from Swift/XRT, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR. The soft X-ray data allowed us to associate each high-energy emitter with a single or multiple X-ray counterpart(s) and characterise the spectral shape of these new AGN by estimating the photon index, the intrinsic absorption, and the 2–10 keV flux. A few cases where two soft X-ray counterparts fall within the INTEGRAL error circle and at least one is classified as an AGN have been found and discussed in detail. Thirty-four sources originally listed as AGN candidates or unidentified objects have been recognised as AGN by employing three diagnostic tests: WISE colours, radio emission, and morphology. For 12 sources among the 34 AGN candidates, we reduced the optical spectra and confirmed their AGN nature, providing also their optical class and redshift. This paper is part of an ongoing effort to keep the INTEGRAL AGN catalogue updated in order to provide the scientific community with a hard X-ray selected sample of well-classified and spectrally characterised active galaxies.
