This study provides a climatological analysis of annual and long-term variability of dry days and sequences of dry days in the Polish Carpathians between 1986 and 2020. The input data for the research was compiled from the daily precipitation totals from 17 meteorological stations and the T. Niedźwiedź catalogue of circulation types over southern Poland. The frequency of sequences of dry days of different duration has been presented. The incidence of long-term periods has been related to the atmospheric circulation. The number of dry days and the averages of both the number and of the duration of sequences of dry days were analysed for the study period. This yielded an average annual number of dry days ranging from 142 to 195 (39–53% of days in a year), depending on the altitude above sea level and longitude. A general pattern emerged in which the number of dry days increased from west to east. At most stations, there were no statistically significant trends with respect to the dry day characteristics analysed. This is an obvious result of high year-to-year variability, which means that only large changes can achieve statistical significance. Dry days have been evidenced to relate to circulation types. The vast majority of dry days are related to anticyclonic systems, particularly the anticyclonic wedge (Ka) and western anticyclonic (Wa) situations. Extreme thermal conditions have been known for a long time as is evidenced by the oldest preserved historical accounts referring to weather. However, direct data, that is, air temperature measurements, which began in Europe in the 17th century, are the only reliable source of information. They provide insight into how climate evolved over the characteristic period of the climate timeline known as the Little Ice Age. This study focuses on extreme climatic phenomena, referred to here as exceptionally cold (EC) and exceptionally warm (EW) months and seasons that occurred in the early instrumental period (until 1830). The research is based on average monthly air temperature values (of different lengths) from five meteorological stations in Europe. The Central England Temperature series (CET) offers the longest series that spans 172 years whereas Padua has the shortest, 57 years. Consequently, the year 1659, which is the start date of the Central England Temperature series, marks the beginning of the study period for the research presented in this article. Thermally anomalous periods are identified based on the standard deviation of the average temperature from the corresponding long‐term average (1831–2020). The highlights of the study include the identification of the pronounced prevalence at all five stations of EC months and seasons when compared to EW months and seasons, especially in Western Europe (CET) during the Maunder Minimum. This article studies the intra-annual and long-term variability in the maximum daily precipitation totals and their association with atmospheric circulation in Kraków. It investigates daily precipitation maxima by year and by month. The research is based on daily precipitation totals in the years 1863–2021 and draws on the calendar of atmospheric circulation types by Niedźwiedź. It examines the frequency of precipitation maxima in individual months and their variation from one year to another. No statistically significant trend of change in precipitation over the study period has been found. All annual maximum daily precipitation totals in Kraków fall into the category of heavy precipitation (>10 mm), and almost 99% qualify as very heavy (>20 mm). In the summer months, these are about 3–4 times higher than in winter. The share of the daily precipitation maximum in the monthly total exceeds 30% in all months. The maximum daily precipitation occurring on 5 August 2021 was the highest in the period that extends from the start of instrumental measurements. The study period saw 12 cases of maximum precipitation that belong to 'flood-inducing' categories (over 70 mm/day). Such cases of the very heaviest precipitation occurred in cyclonic situations: Cc, Bc, Nc, NEc, Ec and SEc. Most spring and summer maxima were seen on days with a cyclonic circulation. The instances of high daily precipitation in the Kraków area led to the flooding of residential and historic buildings, as well as of municipal infrastructure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

W pracy scharakteryzowano obciążenia cieplne człowieka w trzech najgorętszych miesiącach, które wystąpiły w Krakowie na początku XXI w., a mianowicie w lipcu 2006 r., sierpniu 2015 r. i czerwcu 2019 r. Podstawę badań stanowiły wartości wskaźnika UTCI obliczone na bazie czterech elementów meteorologicznych z trzech terminów obserwacji w ciągu doby (6, 12 i 18 UTC). Jako okres referencyjny przyjęto ostatnie trzydziestolecie 1991-2020. W opracowaniu wykorzystano także kalendarz typów cyrkulacji i mas powietrznych nad południową Polską (Niedźwiedź, 1981, 2023). Na postawie średnich wartości charakterystyk termicznych, jak i wskaźnika UTCI, wykazano, że warunki odczuwalne w 3 niezwykle ciepłych miesiącach były podobne. Ogólnie dni ze stresem ciepła (o 12 UTC) było rekordowo dużo: od 70% w sierpniu 2015 r. do 84% w czerwcu 2019 r. Przebieg obciążeń z dnia na dzień był nieco odmienny. Potwierdziło się, zgodnie z dotychczasową wiedzą, że o nasileniu gorąca zadecydowały zarówno charakter cyrkulacji, jak i kierunek adwekcji i typ masy powietrznej. Podczas niezwykle ciepłych miesięcy w dniach z najsilniejszym stresem ciepła przeważała cyrkulacja antycyklonalna z sektora południowego (Sa i SWa), sprowadzająca gorące masy powietrza zwrotnikowego. The set of meteorological data from the Jagiellonian University station in Kraków is one of the longest‐recorded in central Europe. Measurement records date back to 1826. Based on the average monthly values of air temperature, total cloudiness, water vapour pressure and wind speed at 1200 UTC, the UTCI values were calculated and the occurrence of cold stress (UTCI < −13°C) and heat stress (UTCI > 32°C) was estimated. The variability of the applied measures of thermal stress conditions was studied both annually and in individual seasons (MAM, JJA, SON, DJF). Statistically significant changes in the studied characteristics of the bioclimate were found. Average annual UTCI values increased at the rate of 0.27°C/10 years. In individual seasons, the trend of UTCI changes ranged from 0.10°C/10 years in summer to 0.43°C/10 years in winter. The number of days with cold stress decreased by 1.8 days/10 years and the number of days with heat stress significantly increased (0.5 days/10 years). Two subperiods with different trends of changes were determined. The first covers the years 1826–1940, and the second, 1941–2021. The former indicates a negative UTCI trend of −0.17°C/10 years, and the latter, an increasing trend of 1.09°C/10 years. The onset of periods with very high or low air temperatures has aroused general interest for a long time, which is understandable since it has many dangerous effects directly affecting humans. Such perilous climatic phenomena include exceptionally cold and exceptionally warm months, which this study investigates for all Europe and for its five physico‐geographic regions over the 190‐year period of 1831–2020. Therefore, the research in this paper includes two periods characteristic of the history of climate – the late Little Ice Age (LIA) and present‐day warming. The studies are based on average monthly air temperature values from 40 weather stations in Europe. In this paper, exceptionally cold months (ECMs) or exceptionally warm months (EWMs) are considered to have occurred when the average air temperature at a station differed from the respective long‐term average by at least two standard deviations. The highlights of the study include the identification of a drop in the number of ECMs by 20 over the entire 190‐year period, and a highly statistically significant increase in EWMs by 44 between 1980 and 2020. A new method of searching for periodicity has been developed on the basis of extensive spatio-temporal data. The result, however, produces little more than doubts. The standard Fourier analysis indicates some periods, namely 3.7-, 7.0-, 8.8-, and 17.5-year periods, and these periodic signals are distributed relatively consistently over some regions of Europe. However, the expectations that the exact harmonic 8.8 years of 17.5 years, and not so exact 3.7 years of 7.0 years will be present at the same or close stations are not fulfilled. This study determines the frequency, location and spatial extent of such large-area monthly thermal anomalies, which are referred to in this paper as continental-scale thermal anomalies (CTAs). The research was based on monthly mean air temperature values from 210 weather stations over the 68-year period 1951-2018. A CTA is defined as an anomaly when the monthly mean temperature exceeded the long-term average by at least 2 standard deviations at a minimum of 40 stations. This study attempts to explain the occurrence of such CTAs (negative CTAs- and positive CTAs+) in relation to the circulation conditions over Europe. In the years 1951-2018, there were 16 CTAs-(mainly in winter and autumn) and 25 CTAs+ (predominantly in summer). One manifestation of climate warming is the ever less frequent occurrence of CTAs- and a growing frequency and spatial extent of CTAs+. The immediate cause behind CTAs was the occurrence of characteristic synoptic situations, leading to intensified advection of cold or hot air masses, often driven by radiation factors. The formation of CTAs- was much more often associated with very extensive and long-lasting anticyclonic systems, and that the associated synoptic situations over Europe lasted much longer than in the case of CTAs+. The paper discusses the circulation and thermal conditions over Poland and their dependence on the sign and values of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index (hereinafter NAO+ and NAO-). The input data used in the research consisted of average monthly values of air temperature in Warsaw, NAO index values, and a calendar of atmospheric circulation types according to Lityński (1969). The study comprised the three winter months (December, January,February) from the period 1951-2015. The dependence between the circulatory and thermal conditions was investigated on the basis of 10 months representing each of the winter months with the highest NAO+ and NAOvalues and 10 months with the greatest positive and negative temperature deviations from the long-term average (Δt+, Δt-), based on the assumption, that they should largely be the same months. In general, the analysis confirmed these assumptions, but it also showed that there are deviations from previously known regularities as regards the effect of the positive or negative phases of the NAO on the thermal conditions in Poland. As one of the historical sources reads: I The memorable year (1473) was for all of Europe and for the Kingdom of Poland a year of extraordinary heat waves and uninterrupted drought [...], so that all the streams went dry and the biggest rivers in Poland could be forded i (Girgu's and Strupczewski, [4]). The stable weather conditions, with an average temperature very evenly distributed over the entire territory of Poland, were shaped by a block associated with a strong anticyclone stretching across Scandinavia and northwest Russia. September was dominated by air masses linked with anticyclonic systems, which led to longer spells of relatively high air temperatures and to anomalously high temperatures over one-third of Poland's territory (Table). The article presents a study which analyzes the diurnal cycle of thunderstorm precipitation in Krakow, Poland from 1951-2006. It involved a study of the consistent record of pluviographic measurements from the Astronomical Observatory of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the collection of sea level synoptic maps. It concludes that the synoptic situations which determine the thermal and humidity properties of air masses influences the 24 hours diurnal cycle of thunderstorm precipitation.

This paper investigates the relationship between maximum precipitation in Krakow and types of atmospheric circulation in southern Poland, as classified by Niedźwiedź. Three characteristics were used to define this relationship: maximum precipitation (Pmax), its duration (d) and probability of exceedance (p). The input data came from Kraków's uniquely long and homogenous pluviographic record spanning the period 1886-2007. Hourly precipitation values for the maximum precipitation events were identified and arranged in 1-24 hour intervals. They were then processed using the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution to produce quantiles of maximum precipitation totals in each of the intervals and broken down by the corresponding circulation type. Differences between the development mechanisms are manifested in relationships between precipitation characteristics and their measure of randomness, i.e. exceedance probability. This paper demonstrates that maximum precipitation events depend on their duration d and atmospheric circulation. The maximum short-duration (one-hour) events occur primarily in either of two circulation types: (i) cyclonic with advection from the east and from the southeast or (ii) low-pressure centre and cyclonic trough. Maximum long-duration precipitation events (24 hour), on the other hand, occur in the cyclonic type of circulation with advection from the north and from the northeast. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the seasonal features of the variation of diurnal precipitation in Krakow, Poland. It describes the diurnal cycle of liquid precipitation, utilizing the phase and amplitude of frequency and totals of precipitation. It examines a long set of uniform hourly precipitation data from Krakow in South Poland for the period 1886-2002. The function of atmospheric fronts and particular air masses in the 24-hour precipitation cycle was ascertained. The findings of the investigation include the connection between time precipitation concentration that results in significant differences in precipitation distribution in cold and warm fronts.
