Purpose: There is a large number of perishable foodstuffs produced, stored, distributed and delivered daily around the world. Almost all except for root vegetables are sensitive products to temperature. Thus, adopting uninterrupted and appropriate logistics activities with predetermined range of temperature from production site until end-user is critical for ensuring required quality and safety. If a mistake is made during either transport or storage, it not only becomes risky for human health, but also generates huge food waste for the environment and negative economic impact for food providers. Therefore, this study aims to identify all potential factors affecting the cold chain performance in the food industry and to design a framework that includes these factors. This framework is also a roadmap for managers, food providers and logistics parties for sustainable cold chain management. Design/methodology/approach: Considering, tangible and intangible potential criteria, the ultimate goal of this study is to identify potential criteria affecting cold food chain performance and propose a conceptual framework including 12 main criteria. Next, the importance order of each criterion and the causal relationships between them are determined. In this study, this relationship among criteria is analyzed by using fuzzy Decision-making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) approach because of its ability to solve complex problems by ensuring causal relationship among factors, additionally to determine importance order. Finally, suggestions for administrative implications are presented. Findings: Fuzzy DEMATEL was used to explain the causal link and importance order among identified drivers. The analysis shows that five criteria (C1, C3, C8, C9 and C12) belong to cause (influential) groups and remaining seven criteria belong to effect (influenced) groups. The highest influential criterion is staff (C8) and is followed by technical issues (C9) as the second most influential factor. Additionally, top three most important factors are traceability (C7), staff (C8) and cold transportation (C5). According to the numerical results of fuzzy DEMATEL implementations, suggestions for managerial implementations are presented. Practical implications: The main contribution of the study is to propose meaningful suggestions for managerial implications about sustainable cold chain in food industry for businesses and to examine causal relations between criteria and to rank criteria in descending importance order. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study that focuses on determining the potential criteria affecting cold supply chain performance both theoretically and empirically in the sustainability environment. Poly(ω‐pentadecalactone‐co‐ε‐caprolactone) copolymer (PDL‐CL) is an enzymatically synthesized aliphatic biopolyester, which has been participated in a nanofibrous structure for the first time. Electrospinning of this synthetic polymer by blending with a natural polymer such as gelatin (Gel) could provide new characteristics that are significant for biomedical applications, such as drug delivery, wound healing, and tissue engineering. In the present study, PDL‐CL/Gel nanofibrous membranes were successfully produced and characterized. The average diameter of nanofibers was 305.0 ± 45.5 nm that may be beneficial in applications mentioned above. In order to increase hydrolytic resistance, cross‐linking with glutaraldehyde vapor was applied. Cross‐linking for 2 h was enough to obtain a nanofibrous membrane that was able to resist in pH 7.4 phosphate buffered saline for 30 days. In addition, contact angle measurement results had shown that, cross‐linked nanofibrous membrane had good wettability, which is a required specification to be applied in biomedical field. Hence, this study provides an overview on fabrication of fine PDL‐CL/Gel nanofibers, which may have potential to be used in biomedical area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rice husk ash is a side-product of rice production; thus, it is a cheap, abundant, and renewable material, and utilized as an enzyme carrier to immobilize Candida antarctica lipase B. In this study, Candida antarctica lipase B immobilized onto rice husk ashes was used to catalyze ring opening polymerization of 16-membered lactone, ω-pentadecalactone. In order to determine the best polymerization conditions for highest molar mass polymer, reactions were proceeded at various temperatures and time periods. The best reaction conditions were obtained as 80°C and 6 hours (Mn= 34255 g mol-1). Molecular structure of this polymer sample was confirmed via proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Thermal properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Consequently, poly( ω-pentadecalactone) was synthesized enzymatically with rapid polymerization tendency and improved thermal properties which were quite close to low-density polyethylene. Successful polymerization results showed that Candida antarctica lipase B immobilized onto rice husk ashes may be a good alternative to commercial immobilized form, Novozyme 435, as a result of its comparable activity and low cost. OBJECTIVE: Head trauma is one of the most important emergency health problems both in the world and in our country. The objective in our study is to (i) state the correlation between the findings of bispectral index score (BIS) and computed tomography (CT), which are used to evaluate the level of consciousness of patients with isolated head trauma, and (ii) investigate objective results about the patient's level of consiousness/alertness according to the CT modality, which is used frequently. METHODS: This prospective study was carried out between 03.01.2014 and 09.01.2014 in the emergency department of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Education and Research Hospital. The average BIS scores were correlated with the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) point, the Canadian CT Head Rule major and minor criteria, and the pathologic findings in CT imaging. The patients' demographic features, vital signs at admission, and arrival times at the hospital were investigated. RESULTS: In our study, 64 (31.7%) patients were female, and 138 (68.3%) patients were male. The mean BIS scores were 84.99±11.20 (86.05) and 93.78±3.80 (95.05) in patients with and without CT pathologies, respectively. The correlation between CT pathology and BIS scores was statistically significant: BIS scores were lower in patients with CT pathologies (p=0.001; p<0.01). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the BIS and GCS scores (45.6%) (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: We showed that most head traumas occur after dangerous accidents, and according to the results, we can predict that males are more frequently affected than females. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between BIS scores and GCS points. In our study, the BIS scores were statistically significantly lower in patients with CT pathology than in patients without. We can predict that if the BIS score of the patient is low, then there will be the presence of pathology on CT imaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
