Although almost half of U.S. domestic pleasure travellers visit friends and relatives, this market segment was marginalised and almost forgotten until the late 1980s. This study examined the variety-seeking behaviour of U.S. travellers whose primary trip motive was to visit friends and relatives. Using trip purposes and destination patterns, VFRs were classified into four types: single-destination/single-purpose, multi-purpose, multi-destination, and multi-destination/multi-purpose. The four groups were found to be significantly different in travel trip (tripographics) and some socio-demographic characteristics. Several important recommendations are provided for marketers interested in pursuing VFRs as a niche market.

Advanced Traveller Information Systems (ATIS) are discussed in the context of the reduction of road congestion and the improved use of the existing infrastructure. A two-step procedure will present the road user with the optimal travel routes for their journey. A dynamic route guidance system is described.
