Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are diseases caused by the interaction of genetic and non-genetic factors. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate the association between six common genetic polymorphisms and T2DM and MetS in males. A total of 120 T2DM, 75 MetS, and 120 healthy controls (HC) were included in the study. ACE ID, eNOS 4a/b, ATR1 A1166C, OXTR (A>G), SOD1 +35A/C, CAT-21A/T gene polymorphisms were genotyped by PCR or PCR-RFLP techniques. T2DM was diagnosed at an earlier age compared to MetS (54 vs 55 years old, p=0.0003) and the difference was greater in carriers of the OXTR G allele (54 vs 56 years old, p=0.0002) or both OXTR G and eNOS b alleles (54 vs 56, p=0.00016). The SOD1 AA genotype (O.R.=0.11, p=0.0006) and the presence of both ACE I and OXTR1 A (O.R.=0.39, p=0.0005) alleles revealed to be protective for T2DM. SOD1 AA and AC genotypes were protective factors for triglyceride (p=0.0002 and p=0.0005, respectively) and HDL cholesterol (p=0.0002 and p=0.0004, respectively) levels in T2DM patients. ACE DD was identified more frequently in hypertensive T2DM patients (O.R.=3.77, p=0.0005) and in those who reported drinking alcohol (p=0.0001) comparing to HC and T2DM patients who did not drink alcohol, respectively. 6. Characterization of ZnO, Ga-Doped ZnO, and Nd-Ga-Doped ZnO Thin Films Synthesized by Radiofrequency Magnetron Sputtering.

Abstract

Here is described the influence of deposition parameters of ZnO thin films doped with Ga and co-doped with (Ga + Nd) upon the structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties. The transparent conductive thin films were fabricated by radiofrequency (RF) magnetron sputtering using a power of 100 W and a deposition distance of 6 cm. The deposition was performed on glass substrates heated at 150 °C with a time deposition of 90 min. The influence of doping upon the structure of thin films was analyzed by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Optical transmission measurements showed an 85% transparency in the visible range for the undoped ZnO films and the transparency of these films decreased when the dopants were added. Micro-structural analysis obtained by atomic force microscopy (AFM) evidenced that the type of doping modify the microstructure of thin films. Raman and resistivity measurements emphasize the successful incorporation of dopants into the ZnO host material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: The main objective was to assess the prevalence of hernia recurrence, wound complications (surgical site infections [SSI], seroma and hematoma) and mortality after anterior component separation (ACS) and posterior component separation via transversus abdominis muscle release (PCSTAR) in patients with complex incisional hernias. Summary background: The so-called complex IH is a serious medical and societal challenge due to its direct and indirect costs; it is also hampered by the use of different surgical techniques, different type of meshes, and different results heterogeneously reported and interpreted. According to actual data, the best approach seems to be a mesh reinforcement component separation procedure augmented or not with an adjuvant technique (preoperative progressive pneumoperitoneum and/or Botulin toxin type A infiltration). Methods: A systematic search of four databases (MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholars) was conducted to identify studies reporting on outcomes of component separation techniques and which were published before December 2021. A systematic review and a meta-analysis of postoperative outcomes were performed. Results: Nineteen studies including 3412 patients (1709 with ACS and 1703 with PCSTAR) were selected. Pooled hernia recurrence rate after a minimum 1-year follow-up was evaluated at 5.15% (odds ratio [OR] 0.68; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.5–0.9; p = 0.0175). Pooled surgical site infection rate was 10.6% (OR 1.32; 95% CI 1.06–1.65; p = 0.0119). Seroma and hematoma were estimated at 9.75% (OR 1.93; 95% CI 1.52–2.44; p = 0.0001) and 3.83% (OR 1.81; 95% CI 1.26–2.61; p = 0.0012), respectively. ACS was associated with increased wound morbidity, seroma and hematoma. PCSTAR displayed higher recurrence rate (4.27% vs 6.11%). Conclusions: PCSTAR was superior to ACS in terms of wound morbidity, surgical site infections, seroma and hematoma incidence. Abstract

Torque teno viruses (TTVs) are recently discovered DNA viruses, with heterogeneous genomes, highly prevalent in populations worldwide. The species that infect humans are Torque teno virus (TTV), Torque teno midi virus (TTMDV) and Torque teno mini virus (TTMV). High-resolution melting analysis (HRMA) is a sensitive and effective method for genotyping and mutation scanning. Up to now, HRMA has not been utilized for detection of TTVs.

A particular case of interactions of a single massless tensor field with the mixed symmetry corresponding to a two-column Young diagram (k,1) with k=4, dual to linearized gravity in D=7, is considered in the context of: self-couplings, cross-interactions with a Pauli-Fierz field, cross-couplings to purely matter theories, and interactions with an Abelian 1-form. The general approach relies on the deformation of the solution to the master equation from the antifield-BRST formalism by means of the local cohomology of the BRST differential.

Abstract

The occurrence, relative abundance and bathymetric distribution of the deep Mediterranean heterobranch fauna were evaluated as a result of an extensive visual census down to 1825 m depth, carried out along the western Italian coasts, covering a latitudinal range of about 600 nautical miles. Observations were conducted using Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) in 551 sites, focusing on the deepest part of the continental shelf, the shelf edge and the upper bathyal zone. The analysis of over 508 hours of video footage and more than 27,000 high-resolution photographs allowed to explore about 594,000 m2 of rocky outcrops and nearby soft seafloors in four main coastal areas (Ligurian Sea, north-central Tyrrhenian Sea, southern Tyrrhenian Sea, and Sicily Channel) and twelve offshore seamounts. Thirty-six species of heterobranchs, for a total of 559 records, were identified. Sixteen were only sporadically spotted (< 1% of the total observations), while three (Paraflabellina ischitana, Tritoniidae nd and Peltodoris atromaculata) contributed each for more than 10% of the records. An extension of the known Mediterranean bathymetric distribution was reported for 80% of the observed species, with many typically shallow-water taxa being also found in mesophotic environments (40–200 m). The observed marked decrease in diversity and abundance suggested that Mediterranean heterobranchs are mainly a coastal benthic group. From the geographical point of view, the heterobranch fauna present in the Ligurian Sea appeared significantly different from that observed in the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Sicily Channel, and this latitudinal pattern was discussed. Particular attention was given to single out the bathymetric distribution of the food sources of the most frequently observed species, supporting stenophagy as a limiting factor for their colonisation of the deep sea. Abstract

In current paper, a comprehensive review to contribute the present insight an implementations and the recent improvements through the diverse endeavor made by the researchers utilizing a membrane technique for degumming, deacidifying, dewaxing and discoloration edible vegetable oils with and without solvent availability and also the solvent recovery has been evaluated. Endeavors made with NF, UF, MF and non-porous membranes, have shown the capability of these membranes to predicate vegetable oil treatment. A membrane technique is noticeably simple and potentially provides many usefulness in vegetable oil purification. It appears that oils treatment with membranes, which carried out at low temperatures that provides saving energy, with real cancellation of stages, provides a promising alternate to conventional procedure, towards the accomplishment of eco-friendly and cost-effective operations that are technically sophisticated. Generally, the solvent (hexane-dilution) technique enhances the membrane oil flux. For dewaxing undiluted vegetable oils, the effective membrane was MF, whereas in dewaxing solvent-diluted oils process UF membranes were more energetic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

26. Neuronal spike timing adaptation described with a fractional leaky integrate-and-fire model.

Abstract

The voltage trace of neuronal activities can follow multiple timescale dynamics that arise from correlated membrane conductances. Such processes can result in power-law behavior in which the membrane voltage cannot be characterized with a single time constant. The emergent effect of these membrane correlations is a non-Markovian process that can be modeled with a fractional derivative. A fractional derivative is a non-local process in which the value of the variable is determined by integrating a temporal weighted voltage trace, also called the memory trace. Here we developed and analyzed a fractional leaky integrate-and-fire model in which the exponent of the fractional derivative can vary from 0 to 1, with 1 representing the normal derivative. As the exponent of the fractional derivative decreases, the weights of the voltage trace increase. Thus, the value of the voltage is increasingly correlated with the trajectory of the voltage in the past. By varying only the fractional exponent, our model can reproduce upward and downward spike adaptations found experimentally in neocortical pyramidal cells and tectal neurons in vitro. The model also produces spikes with longer first-spike latency and high inter-spike variability with power-law distribution. We further analyze spike adaptation and the responses to noisy and oscillatory input. The fractional model generates reliable spike patterns in response to noisy input. Overall, the spiking activity of the fractional leaky integrate-and-fire model deviates from the spiking activity of the Markovian model and reflects the temporal accumulated intrinsic membrane dynamics that affect the response of the neuron to external stimulation.

42. Long-term effects of gypsum on crop yield and subsoil chemical properties

Abstract

In hot humid climates with highly leached, variable charge soils, the yields of many crops are limited due to subsoil acidity. Although surface-applied gypsum has been shown to be effective in ameliorating this acidity in ferruginous and aluminous soils, the length to time that the effect is likely to last has not been satisfactorily established. A number of long-term experiments with gypsum incorporated into the topsoil at 10 and 35 Mg ha(super -1) were sampled to evaluate its effects on soil profile chemical properties and yields of corn (Zea mays L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Even after 16 yr, the gypsum effects were still clearly visible. Exchangeable Ca and SO4 were higher down the soil profile in the gypsum than in the control treatment. A complementary reduction in exchangeable Al was observed in the gypsum treatment to the 80-cm depth. However, pH was not greatly altered down the profile. This amelioration of the effects of subsoil acidity was reflected in improved crop yields of both corn (29-50%) and alfalfa (approximately 50%) on the gypsum treatments. Because the gypsum effect is so long-lasting, its use as a subsoil acidity ameliorant becomes highly economic because the initially high cost can be amortized over an extended period of time.

Abstract

In this work, the influence of co-doping with Al and rare earth ions (RE= Er, Gd, Nd) on the structure and morphology of zinc oxide (ZnO) films is presented. Spray coated thin films were obtained using a mixture of nitrate substances diluted in equal quantities of distilled water and ethanol. The coated films were deposited on quartz glass and Si(100) substrates using a constant concentration of 0.15M, a temperature of 210°C, pressure of 2 bar and 10 minutes time of deposition. After this step, the coated films were annealed at 3 different temperatures (600°C, 800°C and 1000°C) for 5 minutes each. The influence of dopant and annealing treatment upon crystallographic structure of the films was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Microstructural and surface analysis from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and AFM measurements evidenced that the type of doping and the annealing treatment modify the surface morphology of the films.
