Abstract The incidence of repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI), one of the main risk factors for predicting neurodegenerative disorders, is increasing; however, its underlying mechanism remains unclear. As suggested by several studies, ferroptosis is possibly related to TBI pathophysiology, but its effect on rmTBI is rarely studied. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), the most studied experimental cells in stem cell therapy, exert many beneficial effects on diseases of the central nervous system, yet evidence regarding the role of MSCs in ferroptosis and post-rmTBI neurodegeneration is unavailable. Our study showed that rmTBI resulted in time-dependent alterations in ferroptosis-related biomarker levels, such as abnormal iron metabolism, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) inactivation, decrease in GPx4 levels, and increase in lipid peroxidation. Furthermore, MSC treatment markedly decreased the aforementioned rmTBI-mediated alterations, neuronal damage, pathological protein deposition, and improved cognitive function compared with vehicle control. Similarly, liproxstatin-1, a ferroptosis inhibitor, showed similar effects. Collectively, based on the above observations, MSCs ameliorate cognitive impairment following rmTBI, partially via suppressing ferroptosis, which could be a therapeutic target for rmTBI.

Although there are still no satisfactory answers to the question of why we need to sleep, a better understanding of its function will help to improve societal attitudes toward sleep. Sleep disorders are very common in neurodegenerative diseases and are a key factor in the quality of life of patients and their families. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an insidious and irreversible neurodegenerative disease. Along with progressive cognitive impairment, sleep disorders and disturbances in circadian rhythms play a key role in the progression of AD. Sleep and circadian rhythm disturbances are more common in patients with AD than in the general population and can appear early in the course of the disease. Therefore, this review discusses the bidirectional relationships among circadian rhythm disturbances, sleep disorders, and AD. In addition, pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options for patients with AD and sleep disorders are outlined.

Neural inflammatory response is a crucial pathological change in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) which accelerates the formation of perihematomal edema and aggravates neural cell death. Although surgical and drug treatments for ICH have advanced rapidly in recent years, therapeutic strategies that target and control neuroinflammation are still limited. Exosomes are important carriers for information transfer among cells. They have also been regarded as a promising therapeutic tool in translational medicine, with low immunogenicity, high penetration through the blood-brain barrier, and ease of modification. In our previous research, we have found that exogenous administration of miRNA-124-overexpressed microglial exosomes (Exo-124) are effective in improving post-injury cognitive impairment. From this, we evaluated the potential therapeutic effects of miRNA-124-enriched microglial exosomes on the ICH mice in the present study. We found that the gene-edited exosomes could attenuate neuro-deficits and brain edema, improve blood–brain barrier integrity, and reduce neural cell death. Moreover, the protective effect of Exo-124 was abolished in mice depleted of Gr-1+ myeloid cells. It suggested that the exosomes exerted their functions by limiting the infiltration of leukocyte into the brain, thus controlling neuroinflammation following the onset of ICH. In conclusion, our findings provided a promising therapeutic strategy for improving neuroinflammation in ICH. It also opens a new avenue for intranasal delivery of exosome therapy using miRNA-edited microglial exosomes.

Sleep deprivation (SD) induces systemic inflammation that promotes neuronal pyroptosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an antioxidant modafinil on neuronal pyroptosis and cognitive decline following SD. Using a mouse model of SD, we found that modafinil improved learning and memory, reduced proinflammatory factor (IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6) production, and increased the expression of anti-inflammatory factors (IL-10). Modafinil treatment attenuated inflammasome activity and reduced neuronal pyroptosis involving the NLRP3/NLRP1/NLRC4-caspase-1-IL-1β pathway. In addition, modafinil induced an upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and synaptic activity. These results suggest that modafinil reduces neuronal pyroptosis and cognitive decline following SD. These effects should be further investigated in future studies to benefit patients with sleep disorders.

BackgroundRepetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) is closely associated with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Neuroinflammation and neuropathological protein accumulation are key links to CTE progression. Exosomes play important roles in neuroinflammation and neuropathological protein accumulation and spread. Here, we explored the role of brain-derived exosomes (BDEs) in mice with rmTBI and how the inhibition of BDE release contributes to neuroprotection.MethodsGW4869 was used to inhibit exosome release, and behavioural tests, PET/CT and western blotting were conducted to explore the impact of this inhibition from different perspectives. We further evaluated cytokine expression by Luminex and microglial activation by immunofluorescence in mice with rmTBI after exosome release inhibition.ResultsInhibition of BDE release reversed cognitive impairment in mice with rmTBI, enhanced glucose uptake and decreased neuropathological protein expression. Inhibition of BDE release also changed cytokine production trends and enhanced microglial proliferation.ConclusionIn this study, we found that BDEs are key factor in cognitive impairment in mice with rmTBI and that microglia are the main target of BDEs. Thus, inhibition of exosome release may be a new strategy for improving CTE prognoses.

Atmospheric dustfall samples from the libraries and dormitories of 14 universities in Wuhan, China, were collected and analyzed for 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results showed that the levels of Σ16PAHs in the dustfall from libraries varied from 2.45 to 13.4 μg·g−1, with an average value of 5.06 μg·g−1, while that of dormitories ranged from 2.61 to 10.6 μg·g−1, with an average of 5.19 μg·g−1. The compositions of PAHs in library and dormitory dustfall were similar, and they were dominated by high molecular weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs) (including fluoranthene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, and chrysene), which accounted for 79.2% of the total PAHs. Spatially, the higher levels of PAHs contamination were mainly distributed in areas with high population density and heavy traffic, which suggests that anthropogenic activities made an important contribution to the PAHs emissions. The diagnostic ratios and principal component analyses (PCA) indicated that combustion-related anthropogenic sources, such as petroleum, coal, and biomass combustion, as well as vehicular traffic emission, were the main sources of PAHs bound to dustfall. The toxic equivalent concentrations (BaPeq) of dustfall-bound PAHs ranged from 271 to 2510 μg·kg−1. According to the health risk assessment results, dermal contact was the predominant exposure pathway, followed by ingestion and inhalation. The incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) of exposure to PAHs in dustfall was 1.230 × 10−6−1.140 × 10−5, which indicates that there are low potential carcinogenic risks in the universities.

We aimed to measure prevalence of sleep disturbance in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) by calculating Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and compare these data with patients with benign thyroid nodules or normal participants.Three groups of patients participated in this cross-sectional study. In the first group, 162 patients with DTC received total thyroidectomy, and then 131I therapy. The second group consisted of 84 patients with benign thyroid nodules, who received partial thyroidectomy. The third group was 78 normal healthy control cases. PSQI was used to assess the sleep quality. Inter-group differences were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test or independent samples T test. χ2 test was also used to check prevalence differences of poor sleep quality among the groups. Differences of PSQI score and poor sleep quality prevalence before and after 131I therapy in the same group of DTC participants were analyzed by paired T test and Mcnemar's test.Higher PSQI score (7.59 ± 4.21) and higher rate of poor sleep quality (54.32%) were shown in DTC patients than in any other group. After 131I therapy, PSQI score and prevalence of poor sleep quality in DTC patients increased significantly to 8.78 ± 4.72 and 70.99%. Then DTC patients were divided into two subgroups based on their metastatic status. DTC patients with metastasis (87/162 cases, 53.70%) had significantly higher PSQI score (10.87 ± 5.18) and higher prevalence of poor sleep quality (79.31%).DTC patients suffer from sleep disturbance, 131I therapy and awareness of metastatic status could worsen sleep problem. Psychological fear of cancer, nuclear medicine therapy and metastasis could be one major underlying reason. Longitude and interventional studies are necessary for further investigations.

Abstract Vascular endothelial barrier dysfunction is the most prominent manifestation and important cause of mortality in infectious acute lung injury (ALI). Exogenous apelin is effective in ameliorating lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory response in ALI lungs, reducing exudation of lung tissue and decreasing mortality. This study set out to investigate the association between apelin and Friend leukemia integration-1 (Fli-1) in the prevention and treatment of ALI, and to elucidate the molecular mechanism by which apelin protects the permeability of the vascular endothelial barrier. At the vivo functional level, lung wet/dry weight ratio was used to detect whole lung permeability, evans blue assay and dual fluorescent protein tracking assay were used to detect lung vascular endothelial permeability, HE staining to observe the inflammatory status of lung tissue, and immunofluorescence staining for VE-cadherin expression levels in blood vessels. The changes in inflammatory factors in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were detected by ELASA. Western blot was used to detect the expression level of proteins. qRT-PCR was performed to detect changes in mRNA expression of Fli-1 and adherent junction-related proteins. The correlation analysis of Fli-1 with vascular endothelial permeability and SRC showed that Fli-1 participated in the process of ALI. After preventive and therapeutic treatment of ALI mice with exogenous apelin, Fli-1, APJ, VE-cadherin, phosphorylated-VE-cadherin (p-VE-cadherin) and β-catenin were up-regulated, while SRC, phosphorylated-SRC (p-SRC), VEGF and VEGF-R were down-regulated, which indicated that the stability of vascular endothelial barrier was enhanced. With the use of Fli-1 inhibitor irinotecan, the protective effect of apelin was weakened in various functional indexes, genes and proteins. The lung was maintained at the level of the injury. Our research shows that Fli-1 is involved in the LPS-induced ALI process. The molecular mechanism for apelin in preventing endothelial barrier dysfunction in ALI is through up-regulating Fli-1, thus regulating adherens junction-related proteins, and finally recovering the endothelial barrier function.

Infectious mononucleosis (IM) due to Epstein-Barr virus infection is common. Uric acid (UA) is an important endogenous antioxidant. To the best of our knowledge, the association between UA and IM has not been comprehensively investigated to date. The aim of the present study was to investigate this association in Chinese patients. A total of 95 patients (47 men and 48 women) with IM were recruited, along with 95 healthy controls. Clinical data were classified by patient sex. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was adopted to determine the cut-off values of UA for IM diagnosis and prediction. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of UA for IM were analyzed by binary logistic regression. The UA levels were significantly lower in IM patients compared with those in controls. In addition, UA levels in men were significantly higher compared with those in women. The ROC curve demonstrated good diagnostic and predictive values of UA for IM in both sexes. The UA cut-off values were 326.00 and 243.50 μmol/l for diagnosing IM in men and women, respectively, with a diagnostic accuracy of 76.596 and 80.208%, respectively. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed a significant risk of IM in the low UA quartiles in both sexes. Following adjustments, the ORs even increased. Women with low UA levels appeared to be more susceptible to IM. For example, the crude ORs in quartile 1 were 24.000 and 52.500 for men and women, respectively, and the respective adjusted ORs were 31.437 and 301.746 (all P<0.01). To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first to demonstrate the inverse association between UA and IM, suggesting a progressive decrease of antioxidant reserve in IM. Oil and natural gas are important energy supply around the world. The exploring, drilling, transportation, and processing in oil-gas regions can release abundant volatile organic compounds (VOCs). To understand the atmospheric behaviors of VOCs in such region, the fifty-six VOCs designed as the photochemical precursors by the United State Environmental Protection Agency were continuously measured for an entire year (September 2014-August 2015) by a set of on-line monitor system at an oil-gas station in northwest China. The VOC concentrations in this study were 1-50 times higher than those measured in many other urban and industrial regions. The VOC compositions were also different from other studies with alkanes contributing up to 87.5 % of the total VOCs in this study. According to the propylene-equivalent concentration and maximum incremental reactivity method, alkanes were identified as the most important VOC groups to the ozone formation potential. The photochemical reaction, meteorological parameters (temperature, relative humidity, pressure, and wind speed) and boundary layer height were found to influence the temporal variations of VOCs at different time scales. The positive matrix factorization analysis showed that the natural gas, fuel evaporation, combustion sources, oil refining process, and asphalt contributed 62.6 %, 21.5 %, 10.9 %, 3.8 %, and 1.3 %, respectively to the total VOCs on the annual average. Clear temporal variations differed from one source to another was observed, due to their differences in source emission strength and the influence of meteorological parameters. Potential source contribution function and contribution weighted trajectory models based on backward trajectories indicated that five identified sources had similar geographic origins. Raster analysis based on CWT analysis indicated that the local emissions contributed 48.4 %-74.6 % to the VOCs. This research filled the gaps in understanding the VOCs in the oil-gas field region, where exhibited different source emission behaviors compared with the urban/industrial regions. Golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellanae) belong to Class A, the highest level of endangered primate species. Exploring the infection status of potential pathogens in golden snub-nosed monkeys is important for controlling associated diseases and protecting this species. The objective of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence for a number of potential pathogens and the prevalence of fecal adenovirus and rotavirus. A total of 283 fecal samples were collected from 100 golden snub-nosed monkeys in December 2014, June 2015, and January 2016; 26 blood samples were collected from 26 monkeys in June 2014, June 2015, January 2016 and November 2016 at Shennongjia National Reserve in Hubei, China. The infection of 11 potential viral diseases was examined serologically using an Indirect Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (iELISA) and Dot Immunobinding Assays (DIA), while the whole blood IFN-γ in vitro release assay was used to test tuberculosis (TB). In addition, fecal Adenovirus and Rotavirus were detected using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). As a result, the Macacine herpesvirus-1 (MaHV-1), Golden snub-nosed monkey cytomegalovirus (GsmCMV), Simian foamy virus (SFV) and Hepatitis A virus (HAV) were detected with the seroprevalence of 57.7% (95% CI: 36.9, 76.6), 38.5% (95% CI: 20.2, 59.4), 26.9% (95% CI: 11.6, 47.8), and 7.7% (95% CI: 0.0, 84.2), respectively. Two fecal samples tested positive for Adenovirus (ADV) by PCR, with a prevalence of 0.7% (95% CI: 0.2, 2.5), and further, the amplification products were sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that they belonged to the HADV-G group. However, other pathogens, such as Coxsackievirus (CV), Measles virus (MeV), Rotavirus (RV), Simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), Simian type D retroviruses (SRV), Simian-T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (STLV-1), Simian varicella virus (SVV), Simian virus 40 (SV40) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (TB) were negative in all samples. In addition, a risk factor analysis indicated that the seroprevalence of MaHV-1 infection was significantly associated with old age (≥4 years). These results have important implications for understanding the health status and conservation of the endangered golden snub-nosed monkey population at Shennongjia Nature Reserve.

Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy (US-CNB) of thyroid nodules is a relatively new technique used in surgical workup. However, no systematic review of this method has yet been performed. In the present meta-analysis, literature databases consisting of Cochrane Library, Medline, Embase, Scopus and Google Scholar were searched. Following eligibility assessments of the studies, quality appraisals were performed on the included studies using the Quality Assessment Tool for Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 method. The data were systematically analyzed by using Review Manager (version 5.3) and Meta-Disc (version 1.4). Eight investigations were included, and the study qualities were good. There were 1,621 nodules included in the final meta-analysis. The summary estimated that US-CNB had a sensitivity of 0.96 [95% confidence interval (CI)=0.94-0.97] and a specificity of 0.96 (95% CI=0.94-0.97). Positive and negative likelihood ratios, and the diagnostic odds ratio of US-CNB were 18.20 (95% CI=2.21-156.41), 0.08 (95% CI=0.02-0.27) and 250.60 (95% CI=19.11-3286.76), respectively. The area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.979. Therefore, US-CNB may be considered as a reliable method in the assessment of thyroid nodules, and has an acceptable risk of complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aimed to explore the association between thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and serum lipids in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), with a focus on the risk of hyperlipidemia between different genders. The study included 352 DTC patients who were ready to receive I-131 therapy as well as 352 matched normal controls. In the DTC group, 157 patients were monitored for TSH and lipid parameters prior to and after 1 month of thyroxine therapy. Results were analyzed using t-tests, Pearson bivariate correlation and binary logistic regression analyses. All participants were divided into 3 subgroups according to TSH levels: Subgroup 1 (normal TSH level), subgroup 2 (TSH between 5 and 30 μIU/ml), and subgroup 3 (TSH >30 μIU/ml). Serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels were significantly higher in the DTC group than in the control group. The levels of these parameters decreased after thyroxine therapy and significant positive correlations were observed between TSH and TC, and TG and LDL-C in both genders. Binary logistic regression demonstrated that female DTC patients had higher risks of developing hyperlipidemia than male patients, and these risks increased when TSH increased. For example, the odds ratios (ORs) of high TC in subgroup 2 were 3.30 in males and 4.60 in females, respectively. However, in subgroup 3, the ORs were 9.40 in males and 13.12 in females, respectively. The results of the present study showed that after thyroidectomy, the risk of dyslipidemia markedly increased in DTC patients. More importantly, female patients had a higher risk than male patients. Object Recent studies have demonstrated the epigenetic regulation of immune responses. However, the potential role of N6-methyladenosine methylation (m6A) in the tumor microenvironment (TME) remains unknown. Method In this study, the m6A modification patterns of LUAD samples were comprehensively evaluated by combining TCGA and GEO data, while these modification patterns were systematically linked to the characteristics of immune infiltrating cells in TME. The m6A score was constructed using the principal component analysis algorithm to quantify the m6A modification mode of a single tumor. Result There were three distinct patterns of m6A modification identified. The characteristics of TME cell infiltration in these three patterns were highly consistent with these three immune phenotypes of the tumors, including immune rejection, immune-inflammatory, and immune inert phenotypes. Low m6A scores were characterized by immune activation and poor survival rate. Besides, m6A scores were associated with tumor mutational load (TMB) and were able to increase the ability of TMB to predict immunotherapy. Two immunotherapy cohorts confirmed that the patients with lower m6A scores demonstrated significant therapeutic advantages and clinical benefits. m6A modifications play an important role in the development of TME diversity. Assessing the m6A modification pattern of individual tumors can deepen the understanding as to the characteristics of TME infiltration and guide more effective immunotherapy strategies.

There is a pressing need for energy management with regard to modern rail vehicles, particularly in the case of electric vehicles (EVs), where various forms of energy and loads have to be considered for vehicle running. Air conditioning is an essential factor that ought to be profoundly analysed, as it can account for a significant proportion of electricity demand. This paper considers a lumped-parameter type thermal model of the passenger compartment of a tram in the presence of parametric uncertainties and external disturbances with an optimized heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system configuration. To overcome the aforementioned problem, a decoupled sliding mode control (SMC) is designed with the purpose of enabling a lower energy usage and providing the thermal comfort conditions in a tram as an efficient and durable control strategy. The temperature and concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) are regulated in a desirable way. A proportional, integral and derivative (PID) controller is employed for comparison purposes and for validating the proposed control scheme. According to the findings of this paper, the SMC outperforms the PID controller in terms of fast tracking and steady state for the desired tracking targets.

Harmonic scalpel and LigaSure vessel sealing systems have been suggested as options for saving surgical time and reducing postoperative complications. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to compare surgical time, postoperative complications and other parameters between them in for the open thyroidectomy procedure. Studies were retrieved from MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, EMBASE and ISI Web of Science until December 2015. All the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing Harmonic scalpel and LigaSure during open thyroidectomy were selected. Following data extraction, statistical analyses were performed. Among the 24 studies that were evaluated for eligibility, 7 RCTs with 981 patients were included. The Harmonic scalpel significantly reduced surgical time compared with LigaSure techniques (8.79 min; 95% confidence interval, -15.91 to -1.67; P=0.02). However, no significant difference was observed for the intraoperative blood loss, postoperative blood loss, duration of hospital stay, thyroid weight and serum calcium level postoperatively in either group. The present meta-analysis indicated superiority of Harmonic Scalpel only in terms of surgical time compared with LigaSure hemostasis techniques in open thyroid surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Iodine-131 (I-131) therapy and post-therapy I-131 scanning are essential in the management of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). However, pathological false positive I-131 scans can lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate I-131 treatment. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the best imaging modality for the diagnosis of pathological false positive I-131 scans in a DTC patient cohort, and to determine its incidence. DTC patient data archived from January 2008 to January 2010 was retrieved. Post-therapeutic I-131 scans were conducted and interpreted. The imaging modalities of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography and ultrasonography were applied and compared to check all suspected lesions. Biopsy or needle aspiration was conducted for patients who consented to the acquisition of histopathological confirmation. Data for 156 DTC patients were retrieved. Only 6 cases of pathological false-positives were found among these (incidence, 3.85%), which included 3 cases of thymic hyperplasia in the mediastinum, 1 case of pleomorphic adenoma in the parapharyngeal space and 1 case of thyroglossal duct cyst in the neck. MRI was demonstrated as the best imaging modality for diagnosis due to its superior soft tissue resolution. However, no imaging modality was able to identify the abdominal false positive-lesions observed in 2 cases, one of whom also had thymic hyperplasia. In conclusion, pathological false positive I-131 scans occurred with an incidence of 3.85%. MRI was the best imaging modality for diagnosing these pathological false-positives. Control and path planning are two essential and challenging issues in quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). In this paper, an approach for moving around the nearest obstacle is integrated into an artificial potential field (APF) to avoid the trap of local minimum of APF. The advantage of this approach is that it can help the UAV successfully escape from the local minimum without collision with any obstacles. Moreover, the UAV may encounter the problem of unreachable target when there are too many obstacles near its target. To address the problem, a parallel search algorithm is proposed, which requires UAV to simultaneously detect obstacles between current point and target point when it moves around the nearest obstacle to approach the target. Then, to achieve tracking of the planned path, the desired attitude states are calculated. Considering the external disturbance acting on the quadrotor, a nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO) is developed to guarantee observation error to exponentially converge to zero. Furthermore, a backstepping controller synthesized with the NDO is designed to eliminate tracking errors of attitude. Finally, comparative simulations are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed path planning algorithm and controller.

Brucellosis is a severe public health problem in the Inner Mongolia regions of China. The recent prevalence of brucellosis outbreaks may be attributed to an increase in the activity of ticks and other air-borne vectors. Dermacentor nuttalli (D. nuttalli) is a native tick species of Inner Mongolia; similar to other tick species, D. nuttalli carries a variety of pathogens that can be transmitted to a wide range of animals. In this study, we have investigated the potential of D. nuttalli in transmitting brucellosis. From 2015 to 2019, 2,256 ticks were collected from 23 different pastoral areas of Hulun Buir. Brucellosis pathogen was detected using DNA extracted from different developmental stages of ticks. Salivary gland and midgut tissue samples were used as templates to amplify Brucella Bscp31 gene (Brucella genus-specific gene) by using TaqMan Real-Time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). To detect the presence of Bscp31 protein, which is specific to Brucella spp., in the midgut and salivary gland tissues of D. nuttalli, Western blotting and immunofluorescence were performed. Additionally, Brucella spp. were isolated using a culture medium. Tick samples were identified as D. nuttalli. Different percentages of Brucella genus-specific genes could be found in the tick samples. From 2015 to 2019, the positivity rate for the detection of Bscp31 gene in D. nuttalli ranged from 0.00 to 87.80%, with the highest rate of 89.00%. In addition, Brucella genus-specific genes were successfully detected in the samples isolated from all the developmental stages and anatomical regions of ticks. Bscp31 protein was present in the midgut and salivary gland of D. nuttalli. Further, B. melitensis biotype 3 was isolated from eggs and engorged adults of D. nuttalli. These findings demonstrate that D. nuttalli is a potent, long-term carrier of Brucella spp. that can exhibit transovarial transmission potential, presenting D. nuttalli as a novel arthropod host for Brucella spp. This study, therefore, indicates the potential risk of transmission of brucellosis via tick bites among animals as well as human beings.

In this paper, a robust adaptive sliding mode control scheme is developed for attitude and altitude tracking of a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system under the simultaneous effect of parametric uncertainties and consistent external disturbance. The underactuated dynamic model of the quadrotor UAV is first built via the Newton–Euler formalism. Considering the nonlinear and strongly coupled characteristics of the quadrotor, the controller is then designed using a sliding mode approach. Meanwhile, additional adaptive laws are proposed to further improve the robustness of the proposed control scheme against the parametric uncertainties of the system. It is proven that the control laws can eliminate the altitude and attitude tracking errors, which are guaranteed to converge to zero asymptotically, even under a strong external disturbance. Finally, numerical simulation and experimental tests are performed, respectively, to verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed controller, where its superiority to linear quadratic control and active disturbance rejection control has been demonstrated clearly.

Variable air volume (VAV) is the most common installation among heating ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. To maintain the comfort level and lessen energy utilization, there is a pressing need for its effective control. In this study, a lumped parameter model composed of multizone VAV is considered, and sliding mode control (SMC) is designed to guarantee robust operation in the presence of uncertainties. For comparison of the proposed controller performance, a proportional integral derivative (PID) controller is additionally designed. The indoor temperature of zones is controlled by positioning the supply air dampers. Tracking objectives of controllers are inspected via two practical cases of desired temperature setpoints including (a) sinusoidal waveform and (b) the combination of steps. Results obtained using SMC ensure the robust operation of the VAV system against parametric uncertainties. In addition, SMC is more energy efficient than PID in terms of overshoot and settling time.

Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) improves cognitive function, but its mechanism has not been elucidated. The aim of the study was to explore whether IG F-1 exerted its protective effect on cognitive function and anxiety behavior through the activation of PI3K/Akt/CREB pathway in high-fat diet rats. Neuronal cells HT22 were tr eated with nothing, IGF-1, IGF-1 + LY294002 or IGF-1 + 666-15. Expressions of p-PI3K, p-Akt and p-CREB were measured using Western blot analysis. Thirty C57BL/6J rats were used. After feeding with high-fat diet, normal saline, PEG-IGF-1, PEG-IGF-1 + LY294002 or PEG-IGF-1 + 666-15 was treated. Cognitive function and anxiety behavior were assessed by Morris water maze and open field test. Several inflammation and oxidative stress biomarkers were measured using recognized methods. Expressions of p-PI3K and p-CREB were also measured using Western blot analysis. After IGF-1 treatment in cells, expressions of p-PI3K, p-Akt and p-CREB were increased. Furthermore, LY294002 downregulated the expressions of these three proteins, but 666-15 only inhibited the expression of CREB in the cells. Compared with the control rats, we found abnormalities of cognitive function and anxiety behavior, inhibition of PI3K/Akt/CREB pathway and increase of oxidative stress and inflammation in high-fat diet rats. After PEG-IGF-1 treatment, the changes in high-fat diet rats were reversed. Then, we blocked the pathway and found that these blo ckers attenuated the protective effects of PEG-IGF-1. In conclusion, IGF-1 improved cognitive function and anxiety behavior in high-fat diet rats and inhibited inflammation and oxidative stress in hippocampus tissue through the activation of PI3K/Akt/CREB pathway.
