In this analysis, the collective effects of rotation, viscous dissipation and vertical throughflow on the onset of convective movement in Jeffrey fluid saturated permeable layer is studied. The improved Darcy model is applied to depict the rheological performance of Jeffrey fluid flow in porous medium. The approximate analytical solution with overall error 0.4 % and numerical solution accurate to one decimal place are presented using the Galerkin process. The analysis reveals that the convective motion concentrates in the top layer if it occurred with sufficiently high value of the Darcy–Eckert number. The rotation factor and the Péclet number postponement the onset of convective drive while, the Gebhart number quicken it weakly. In the occurrence of rotation, the Jeffrey factor displays dual impact on the coming of convective movement. The magnitude of the convection cell declines with increasing the rotation factor, the Jeffrey factor and the Péclet number, while it decreases with enhancing the Gebhart number. It is also found that in the lack of rotation, the Jeffrey factor has no impression on the extent of the convective cell, whereas in the nonexistence of the Péclet number, the Gebhart number has no impact on the arrival of convective drive as well as on the magnitude of the convective cells. The investigation delves into the examination of Jeffreys fluid flow within a porous medium, incorporating a temperature-dependent heat source and throughflow, while also taking into account the presence of an external electric field. The eigenfunction, also known as the critical Rayleigh number, is obtained to determine the initiation of convection by employing Galerkin processes during the linear stability analysis. Subsequently, the findings are scrutinized by means of graphical illustrations to explore the impacts of various factors, including the Jeffreys parameter, heat source, throughflow, and electric field. The results demonstrated that elevated throughflow characteristics played a significant role in the postponement of convection onset, while a rise in the heat source parameter dependent on temperature was found to enhance the overall stability of the system. Additionally, it was observed that the downward throughflow exhibited a greater stabilizing influence when juxtaposed with the upward throughflow, particularly in scenarios involving the Jeffreys term and electric fields. The implications of these findings suggest a complex interplay between throughflow parameters, temperature-dependent heat sources, and external forces, highlighting the intricate dynamics governing convection initiation and system stability in the studied environment. The effect of an internal heat source linearly dependent on the solid fraction on the onset of convection in a composite air‐porous channel with vertical throughflow has been analyzed. We considered boundaries to be insulating to temperature perturbations. The governing equation that satisfies the air‐porous configuration is analyzed by the normal mode approach, solved by the regular perturbation technique for linear stability, and the critical internal Darcy–Rayleigh number for the onset of stationary convection has been derived. The paper aims to analyze the effects of parameters like heat source size, depth ratio, Darcy number, throughflow direction, solid fraction, and Prandtl number on stationary convection in a composite air‐porous configuration. Understanding these influences can illuminate thermal behaviors in intricate systems and inform applications in heat transfer and fluid dynamics. Interflow, throughflow and subsurface stormflow are interchangeable terms that refer to the lateral subsurface flow above a restricting layer of lower hydraulic conductivity that occurs during and following storm events. Interflow (used here) is a more dominant process in steeper catchments with high infiltration capacity soils overlying a more impermeable soil or geologic layer. Interflow as a runoff process was first recognised in the early 1900s, yet hydrologists still struggle to predict its occurrence, persistence, importance, interaction with other streamflow generation processes, and potential to connect to valleys and streams during and following storms. We review the history of interflow research and address some of the challenges in understanding its role in runoff production. We argue that characterising the controls on interflow initiation and occurrence relies on detailed field observations of subsurface properties, which exist only in limited experimental settings. This data shortcoming contributes to our inability to predict interflow or determine its contribution to streamflow more broadly. The effect of throughflow on the beginning of convective motion in a fluid layer overlying a fluid‐saturated porous layer is examined theoretically in this article under the local thermal nonequilibrium model. We considered boundaries to be insulating to temperature perturbations. The normal mode approach is employed to analyze the governing equation for a composite configuration, with the solution sought through the regular perturbation technique to assess linear stability. The critical Rayleigh number, signifying the initiation of stationary convection, has been determined by solving the system of coupled equations. It is found that the system attains stability with increased porosity–conductivity ratios, regardless of the throughflow direction. This stability is consistently observed for depth ratios of 0.1 and 0.2. However, for higher depth ratios (0.5 and 1.0), the system exhibits dual nature stability when throughflow is present. Further, the stability of the system is enhanced by a graphical depiction illustrating how the throughflow parameter, porosity‐scaled conductivity ratio, depth ratio, Darcy number, and Prandtl number collectively influence the onset of convective motion. AbstractThe study investigates the linear and weakly nonlinear stability of Jeffrey fluids in an anisotropic porous medium with throughflow. In the linear stability analysis, the study examines how convective motion changes with variations in the Jeffrey parameter, Peclet number, and anisotropic parameters. The study finds that thermal anisotropy parameter, positive Peclet number, and mechanical anisotropy parameter delay the onset of fluid convection, whereas the Jeffrey parameter enhances the onset of convection in the presence of throughflow. In the nonlinear analysis, heat transfer is calculated using the Ginzburg–Landau Equation (GLE). The study observes that heat transfer increases with the Vadasz number and positive Peclet number, making the system unstable, whereas heat transfer decreases with an increased value of the Jeffrey parameter, thermal anisotropy parameter, mechanical anisotropic parameter, and negative Peclet number, making the system stable. This article aims to study double-diffusive magneto-convective flow of electrically conducting and Newtonian fluid in the presence of throughflow and concentration modulation. Here, two infinite horizontal plates have been considered with heated from below and cooled and salted from above. The flow is also influenced by the induced magnetic field for which a constant magnetic field is applied in the perpendicular direction to the plates and vertically upward direction. A weakly nonlinear analysis is used to obtain the expression of heat and mass transport rate using Ginzburg–Landau equation. The influence of various physical parameters on Nusselt and Sherwood numbers is presented by graphs. From the numerical outcome, it is found that Péclet, Chandrasekhar, and magnetic Prandtl numbers enhance the mass and heat transport rate, while Lewis number increases only the rate of mass transport. The major result of this study is that the onset of convection postpones in the presence of throughflow and magnetic field.

The effects of vertical throughflow, rotation, cross‐diffusion, and vertical heterogeneous permeability on the onset of double‐diffusive convection in a finite vertical porous cylinder have been studied. The fluid in the cylinder is warmed and salted from below with its top and lower walls considered to be isothermal, isosolutal, and permeable. In the model, the Brinkman model was adopted, coupled with the Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation. The normal mode technique is used for linear stability analysis and a single‐term Galerkin method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem. Further, the influence of parameters such as the thermal and solute Rayleigh, Taylor, and the Soret and Dufour numbers on the fluid system instability have been investigated. Among other results, we found that vertical heterogeneity may either stabilize or destabilize a fluid system. The stabilization of the throughflow remains consistent irrespective of the orientation in the absence of a cross‐diffusion effect. The dual effect of throughflow is observed when there are cross‐diffusion effect. We found that increasing the Dufour parameter delays the onset of both stationary and oscillatory convection. Ocean circulation is a key channel and mechanism for the budget, allocation, balance, maintenance, and change of ocean material and energy. From the global ocean perspective, based on the current understanding of multi-scale processes and trend evolution of ocean circulation dynamics, this paper focuses on the overview of basin-scale three-dimensional linkage mechanism, interoceanic exchange and synergy, meridional transport changes and related marine climate and environmental ecological effects of ocean circulation under global climate change, and puts forward heuristic suggestions according to the current research status and deficiencies. The results show that under the regulation of global consistent warming pattern and process, due to the evolution and stress of driving forces, the changes of ocean circulation play an important role in regulating the inter-annual and inter-decadal climate and environment variations and can generate outstanding environmental ecological effects and serious disaster risks in subtropical mid to high latitude regions. It is suggested to increase the independent research and development of refined, special and new observation instruments, enhance the leadership and participation of mid to high latitude comprehensive marine investigation of multi-scale dynamic processes of deeper ocean circulation through international cooperation, highlight the integration and cross-disciplinary research efforts, and effectively improve the capability for forecasts, projection, assessment and prevention of the comprehensive risks of climate change affected by ocean circulation variability and the dynamic environmental and ecological disasters, with the aim of providing necessary hydrodynamic reference for marine energy development, climate change adaptation and disaster risk governance in the marine field.

Improving the knowledge of the failure mechanism of riprap exposed to overtopping is valuable to enhance the construction and reinforcement techniques of rockfill dam defense systems. In this research, four experimental overtopping tests were carried out on 1∶10 rockfill dam models with placed riprap protection layers supported at the toe. Axial reaction loads were measured and 3D models were built using the structure from motion technique to study the displacement of riprap stones exposed to overtopping. The importance of throughflow in the rockfill shoulder is brought to light by comparing these results with previous data from a placed riprap model built on a ramp without throughflow. The structure from motion technique demonstrates to be very effective and highlights the existence of a buckling phenomenon, along with the compaction of the riprap. The displacement data show that the compaction mechanism is more important (both horizontally and vertically) and appears at lower overtopping discharges for less packed placed riprap layer. Finally, similar trends for vertical and horizontal riprap displacements are demonstrated between the initial position and the last position before failure. Such information suggests that the critical discharge value is not as critical as the riprap displacement to predict dam failure under overtopping conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a novel model for flow angles at off-design conditions. The model is based on energy conservation in turbomachinery. By the mean of average process, statistical properties of the wake profile are related to the flow angle and mainstream parameters; then by adopting the classic flow topology of behind-blade wakes, the effect of operating conditions is included in the plot and a model for flow angle is thus developed. The advantage of the model is that it can achieve off-design flow angle estimations with design flow characteristics and it is compatible with CFD-based throughflow methods. This model is then implemented into a standard CFD-based throughflow solver from the previous research to estimate off-design characteristics of blade rows with proper input-output strategies. Furthermore, the effect of loss upon flow angle is also modeled as corrections to the proposed model. In this study, the start of thermosolutal penetrative convection in a horizontal fluid layer heated and salted from below was investigated analytically and graphically in the presence of throughflow and changeable gravity field effects. In order to realize the fast performance analysis of centrifugal compressor, the performance calculation program of centrifugal compressor based on time marching throughflow method was developed. On this basis, combined with blade parameterization method and multi-objective genetic algorithm, the aerodynamic performance of LSCC and Krain centrifugal compressor was optimized with efficiency and pressure ratio as optimization objectives on design point. The results show that, compared with the prototype, the efficiency of LSCC compressor at design point was increased by 0.28 % , the total pressure ratio was improved by 0.551 % , and its stable working range was widened furtherly; the efficiency of Krain compressor at design point was increased by 0.518 % ; the total pressure ratio was improved by 2.27 % ; at the same time, the effectiveness of the performance optimization method was verified. This paper presents a novel approach of modeling the air-cooled turbine with CFD-based throughflow analysis. Starting from the basic equations of motion, governing equations and source terms for mass, momentum and energy are formulated in an analytical manner. These source terms are to mimic the authentic injection-mainstream interactions with easy implementation. The source terms in the aero-cooling scenario are related to corresponding sources in the aerodynamic-only analysis. Based on such formulations, a novel strategy is developed to estimate aerodynamic characteristics of a blade row under film cooling with known characteristics under no cooling. The model and the strategy are validated in the classic NASA E3 turbine guide vane under various operating conditions. Sensitivity studies of input parameters are conducted to evaluate the applicability of the proposed model. The present research examines the joint influence of throughflow and Coriolis force on the onset of double-diffusive convection with an internal heat source modelled by Darcy's law. The BVP4C routine in MATLAB R2020a is used to solve the eigenvalue problem numerically. Critical Rayleigh numbers are obtained for designated values of governing parameters. The effect of the internal heat source parameter, Taylor number, Darcy number, and Peclet number on the system's stability is investigated. The internal heat source parameter has a destabilizing influence on the system, according to our findings. The reason behind this observation is that the presence of an internal heat source in the porous medium may cause more molecular diffusion inside the medium. The Taylor number, on the other hand, stabilizes the system for both upward and downward throughflow because rotation introduces vorticity into the fluid. Thus, the fluid moves with higher velocity in horizontal planes. The velocity of the fluid perpendicular to the planes reduces as a result of this motion. Thus, the onset of convection is delayed. The significance of inconstant gravity force and uniform throughflow on the start of convective movement in an anisotropic porous matrix is investigated numerically utilizing large-term Galerkin procedure. The porous layer is acted to uniform upright throughflow and inconstant downward gravitational force which changes with the height from the layer. In this study, two types of gravity field digression were examined: (a) linear and (b) parabolic. It is found that the throughflow parameter Pe, the thermal anisotropy parameter η and gravity deviation parameter λ postpone the beginning of convective activity, whereas the mechanical anisotropy parameter ξ rapids the onset of convective activity. The dimension of the convection cells enhances on enhancing the thermal anisotropy parameter η, the mechanical anisotropy parameter ξ and gravity deviation parameter λ while, the throughflow parameter Pe decreases the extent of the convective cells. It is also noted that the structure with linear variation of gravity force is more stable.

Featured Application: This method can be used to quickly predict the overall performance as well as the meridional flow details of the centrifugal compressors. After being verified, it can provide an efficient and robust analysis tool for the design system of different types of centrifugal compressors. The meridional distribution of the flow parameters inside the centrifugal compressor is of great importance to its overall performance, as well as its matching performance under a thermal cycle. A time-marching throughflow method for the off-design performance analysis of the centrifugal compressor is described. The method is based on the strictly conservative throughflow-governing equations, and an improved method of boundary-condition enforcement is developed based on Newton's method to achieve a robust and fast throughflow simulation. An inviscid blade force model was adopted to obtain the flow deflection inside the blade passage. Empirical loss models were integrated into the throughflow model to simulate the viscous force effects in the real three-dimensional flow. Two test cases are presented to validate the throughflow method by comparisons with the experimental data or CFD results, including the NASA low-speed centrifugal compressor (LSCC) and the Allison high-performance centrifugal compressor (HPCC). The simulation indicated that the developed enforcement method for the inlet and outlet boundary conditions significantly improves the computational robustness. For both the LSCC and HPCC cases, reasonable flow-parameter distribution was obtained and accurate overall characteristics were also predicted under the off-design conditions. Mercury is a global pollutant of critical concern but its movement through terrestrial upland systems is poorly understood. We investigated whether forest harvesting practices and varying hydrological conditions resulted in different subsurface transport pathways, fluxes and proportions of recent vs. ambient mercury in runoff. In a multiyear field experiment, we measured subsurface lateral mercury fluxes at three adjacent hillslope plots, including one that was not harvested, one where all biomass was removed after harvest, and one where residual biomass was left after harvest. Two different enriched stable mercury isotopes (Hg tracer) were added to the hillslope plots (one pre-harvest and one post-harvest) to help differentiate between recently deposited mercury and ambient mercury in soils, as well as to identify changes between years. More Hg tracer was recovered in runoff post-harvest (16.2–54.0 μg) than pre-harvest (3.7–11.8 μg) from both harvested hillslopes, but differences between harvested hillslopes were not significant. The movement of Hg tracer was governed by periods of near surface preferential flow that was enhanced by forest harvesting. Runoff Hg tracer concentrations were significantly and inversely related to both event runoff magnitude (R2 = 0.85) and runoff ratio (R2 = 0.81). Insignificant relationships between Hg tracer concentrations and both DOC and precipitation pH suggest that for recently deposited mercury, the overarching controls on mobilization were hydrological rather than biogeochemical. The dependence of mercury mobilization on the routing of precipitation to different subsurface flow pathways suggests an important interaction between climate and the age of mercury pools for mercury transport from terrestrial landscapes. In this numerical examination, the thermal stability of an electrically conducting nanofluid is deliberated comprehensively by considering the presence of an externally applied magnetic field along with an imposed vertical throughflow. Additionally, this thin nanofluidic layer is supposed to have a Newtonian rheological behavior, heated from below, and confined horizontally between two permeable rigid plates of infinite extension. Herein, the governing conservation equations are strengthened realistically by the revised version of the Buongiorno's mathematical model, in which the vertical component of the mass flux of solid nanoparticles is presumed to vanish entirely at the horizontal permeable boundaries. After specifying the basic state of the present nanofluid problem, the linear stability theory and normal mode analysis technique are applied properly to obtain the principal stability equations. Finally, the eigenvalue problem derived analytically is tackled thereafter numerically via the Chebyshev-Gauss-Lobatto Spectral Method (CGLSM), in which the thermal Rayleigh number is chosen as an eigenvalue. As a main result, it was demonstrated that the throughflow effect exhibits a dual behavior on the complex dynamics of the system. However, the excreted magnetic field has always a stabilizing impact on the nanofluidic medium.

The effect of vertical throughfow and temperature modulation on a viscoelastic fluid saturated porous medium has been investigated. The amplitudes of temperature modulation at the lower and upper surfaces are considered to be very small and the disturbances are expanded in terms of power series of amplitude of convection. A weak nonlinear stability analysis has been performed for the oscillatory mode of convection, and heat transport in terms of the Nusselt number, which is governed by the non autonomous complex Ginzburg- Landau equation, is calculated. The effect of vertical through flow is found to stabilize the system irrespective of the direction of through flow in the case of permeable boundary conditions. The time relaxation has a destabilizing effect, while the time retardation parameter has a stabilizing effect on the system. The effects of amplitude and frequency of modulation on heat transport have been analyzed and depicted graphically. The study shows that the heat transport can be controlled effectively by a mechanism that is external to the system. Further, it is also found that heat transfer is more in oscillatory mode of convection rather than in stationary mode of convection.

In this study, the influence of constant through flow and varying downward gravity field on the onset of Darcy‐Brinkman convection in a porous medium layer is examined numerically. We considered two cases of gravity field variations: (a) linear and (b) parabolic. A higher‐order Galerkin‐weighted residual technique and QZ procedure are used to get the numerical solution for the entire Darcy numbers amid Da = 0 (Horton‐Rogers‐Lapwood convection) and Da → ∞ (Rayleigh Bénard Convection). It is obtained that the through flow, the downward gravity field and the Darcy number are to holdup the beginning of convection. This paper presents a novel theory regarding the blade loading and the passage flow field within general turbomachineries. The basic philosophy is to establish an analytical relation between the loading, the flow angle, and the blade geometry based on the conservation of energy. Detailed validations and analyses will be carried out to provide a general scope regarding the theory itself as well as its advantages and limitations in common applications. The paper includes the theoretical derivation of the target relation. The starting point is the standard RANS equations. From that, with the aid of the passage-average operator, the relation between the loading and the passage flow field is derived under the energy balance. Theoretical analyses regarding the validity of the relation are performed based on the simulation results and test data on different cascades. Discussions are conducted regarding the assumption and potential applications of the theory. Conclusions are drawn on the applicability of the theory to introduce its potential applications in general turbomachineries.

This article considers experimental data from throughflow investigations conducted on rockfill dams and adds to the state of the art in the study discipline of non-linear flow through rockfill medium, which previously has been limited to permeameter studies. The experimental program consisted of throughflow tests conducted on three different rockfill dam model setups comprising of a large-scale test conducted on a 6 m high homogenous rockfill dam and 1:10 and 1:5 scale models of the same tested in laboratory settings. The test dams were composed of uniformly graded rockfill with median particle sizes ranging from 10.2 to 350 mm. Based on statistical analysis conducted on the experimental data sets, a general non-Darcy type power-law describing non-linear flow through homogenous rockfill dams is proposed. A time-marching throughflow method for the off-design performance analysis of axial compressors is described. The method is based on the Euler equations, and a new inviscid blade force model is proposed in order to achieve desired flow deflection. The flow discontinuity problems at the leading and trailing edges are tackled by automatic correction of blade mean surface using cubic spline interpolation. Empirical loss models have been integrated into the throughflow model in order to simulate the viscous force effects in the real three-dimensional flow. Two test cases have been presented to validate the throughflow model, including the transonic fan rotor – NASA Rotor 67 working at a near-peak-efficiency point and a 1.5-stage high-speed axial compressor with inlet guide vane operating at 68% nominal speed. Reasonable flow parameters distributions have been obtained in the Rotor 67 fan calculating results, and accurate overall performance characteristics have also been predicted at the strong off-design condition for the 1.5-stage axial compressor. The CPU time of both cases cost less than one minute at one operating point. A 1.5-layer quasi-geostrophic reduced gravity model is used to study the hysteresis of a periodic or leaking western boundary current (WBC) flowing by a gap. When the periods of the WBC variations are much longer than the Rossby adjustment time scales of the circulation in the vicinity of the gap, the Hopf bifurcations during the Reincrease and Re-decrease loops are delayed to produce a new domain of hysteresis of the Reynolds numbers, and the critical Reynolds numbers of the WBC regime transitions change significantly, with the domain of the hysteresis Reynolds number larger for shorter periodic forcing. When the periods of the WBC variations are comparable to those of the Rossby adjustment time scales of the circulation in the vicinity of the gap, the WBC path inside the gap becomes periodic without hysteresis. The intrusion of the WBC into the western basin generally gets smaller as the period decreases. In addition, the partial leakage of the WBC transport through the gap into the western basin is found to have significant impact on the hysteresis loop of the WBC path when the leaked transport is larger than 1/2 of the WBC. The disturbances in velocity, temperature and solutal fields are treated by a perturbation expansion in powers of amplitude of applied temperature field. The effect of throughflow has either to stabilize or to destabilize the system for stress free and isothermal boundary conditions. Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are obtained numerically and presented the results on heat and mass transfer. It is found that, throughflow and thermal modulation can be used alternatively to control the heat and mass transfer. The basic tool set to design multi-stage axial compressors consists of fast codes for throughflow and blade-to-blade analysis. Detailed blade row design is conducted with 3D CFD, mainly to control the end wall flow. This work focuses on the interaction between throughflow and blade-to-blade design and the transition to 3D CFD. A design strategy is presented that is based on a versatile airfoil family. The new class of airfoils is generated by optimizing a large number of airfoil shapes for varying design requirements. Each airfoil geometry satisfies the need for a wide working range as well as low losses. Based on this data, machine learning is applied to estimate optimal airfoil shape and performance. The performance prediction is incorporated into the throughflow code. Based on a throughflow design, the airfoils can be stacked automatically to generate 3D blades. On this basis, a 3D CFD setup can be derived. This strategy is applied to study upgrade options for a 15-stage stationary gas turbine compressor test rig. At first, the behavior of the new airfoils is studied in detail. Afterwards, the design is optimized for mass flow rate as well as efficiency. Selected configurations from the Pareto-front are evaluated with 3D CFD.

The onset of double-diffusive convective instability of a horizontal throughflow induced by viscous dissipation in a fluid-saturated porous layer of high permeability is investigated. The porous layer is infinitely long along the horizontal direction and is bounded by two rigid surfaces maintained at constant, but different solute concentrations. The lower surface is thermally insulated, whereas the upper surface is considered to be isothermal. The Darcy-Brinkman model is adopted for deriving the equations governing flow in the medium, and the Soret effect is considered to persist in the flow. The instability in the base flow is considered to be induced by the non-negligible viscous heating. Disturbances in the base flow are assumed in the form of oblique rolls, where the longitudinal and the transverse rolls are at two extreme inclinations. The disturbance functions are assumed to be of O(1). It is considered that Ge≪1 and |Pe|≫1, where Ge is the Gebhart number and Pe is the Péclet number. The eigenvalue problem with coupled ordinary differential equations governing the disturbances in the flow is solved numerically using bvp4c in MATLAB. Results obtained depict that the flow is most stable in the Brinkman regime and the longitudinal rolls are the preferred mode of instability. The solute concentration gradient and the Soret parameter have both stabilizing and destabilizing effect on the flow in the medium, when the values of both are either positive or negative. The instability of a vertical fluid motion (throughflow) in a binary mixture saturating a horizontal porous layer, uniformly heated from below, uniformly salted from below by one salt and permeated by an imposed uniform magnetic field H , normal to the layer, is analyzed. By employing the order-1 Galerkin weighted residuals method, the critical Rayleigh numbers for the onset of steady or oscillatory instability, have been determined.

Abstract: A semianalytic two‐dimensional model is used to analyze the interplay between the different forces acting on density‐driven flow in high‐latitude channels. In particular, the balance between wind stress, viscous forces, baroclinicity, and sea surface slope adjustments under specified flux conditions is examined. Weak winds are found not to change flow patterns appreciably, with minimal (<7%) adjustments to horizontal velocity maxima. In low‐viscosity regimes, strong winds change the flow significantly, especially at the surface, by either strengthening the dual‐jet pattern, established without wind, by a factor of 2–3 or initiating return flow at the surface. A nonzero flux does not result in the addition of a uniform velocity throughout the channel cross section, but modifies both along‐channel and cross‐channel velocities to become more symmetric, dominated by a down‐channel jet centered in the domain and counter‐clockwise lateral flow. We also consider formulations of the model that allow adjustments of the net flux in response to the wind. Flow patterns change, beyond uniform intensification or weakening, only for strong winds and high Ekman number. Comparisons of the model results to observational data collected in Nares Strait in the Canadian Archipelago in the summer of 2007 show rough agreement, but the model misses the upstream surface jet on the east side of the strait and propagates bathymetric effects too strongly in the vertical for this moderately high eddy viscosity. Stream temperature controls a number of biological, chemical, and physical processes occurring in aquatic environments. Transient snow cover and advection associated with lateral throughflow inputs can have a dominant influence on stream thermal regimes for headwater catchments in the rain-on-snow zone. Most existing stream temperature models lack the ability to properly simulate these processes. We developed and evaluated a conceptual-parametric catchment-scale stream temperature model that includes the role of transient snow cover and lateral advection associated with throughflow. The model consists of routines for simulating canopy interception, snow accumulation and melt, hillslope throughflow runoff and temperature, and stream channel energy exchange processes. The model was used to predict discharge and stream temperature for a small forested headwater catchment near Vancouver, Canada, using long-term (1963-2013) weather data to compute model forcing variables. The model was evaluated against 4 years of observed stream temperature. The model generally predicted daily mean stream temperature accurately (annual RMSE between 0.57 and 1.24 °C) although it overpredicted daily summer stream temperatures by up to 3 °C during extended low streamflow conditions. Model development and testing provided insights on the roles of advection associated with lateral throughflow, channel interception of snow, and surface-subsurface water interactions on stream thermal regimes. This study shows that a relatively simple but process-based model can provide reasonable stream temperature predictions for forested headwater catchments located in the rain-on-snow zone. Gas-flow distribution plays a critical role in the performance of fluidized beds because it directly affects gas residence-time and solids mixing. However, measuring it accurately in the harsh conditions of larger reactors is not possible. Therefore, this study is focused on the development of a rigorous computational framework for quantifying gas-flow distribution during fluidization. To this end, fine-grid simulations are conducted for the bubbling fluidization of two distinct Geldart B particles - 1.15 mm LLDPE and 0.50 mm glass particles, at superficial gas velocities U/U mf = 2 and 3 in a 50 cm diameter bed. The two-fluid model (TFM) is employed to describe the solids motion efficiently and in-house developed tool MS3DATA (Multiphase-flow Statistics using 3D Detection and Tracking Algorithm) to compute detailed bubble statistics. The overall gas flow is divided into three phases: (a) dense flow in areas relatively rich is solids concentration (b) “visible” bubble flow associated with rising bubbles and (c) throughflow accounting for the gas flow which mostly bypasses through bubbles. It is found that conditions within the dense-phase depend largely on the particle properties while bubbling dynamics are significantly affected by superficial gas velocity. Calculations show that the throughflow increases in areas frequented by bubbles because the voidage distribution around bubbles increases the local dense-phase permeability. Throughflow may account for up to 40% of the overall gas flow, especially in the fluidization of large particles. This is not desirable because its residence-time is almost 2 × shorter (as compared to the dense flow) and contributes minimally to solids mixing. Finally, it is shown that in comparison to lab-scales, larger beds exhibit more homogeneous gas mixing. The problem of thermal convection in a horizontal fluid-saturated porous layer is examined, where the flow is governed by the Brinkman extension of Darcy's law. A uniform internal heat source and vertical throughflow are also considered. The problem of penetrative convection in fluid layer with vertical throughflow effect is studied by using methods of linear instability theory and unconditional and conditional nonlinear energy theories. Then, the accuracy of the linear instability thresholds are tested using a three-dimensional simulation. For small values of throughflow, the results support the assertion that the linear theory is a good prediction to the onset of convective motion, and thus, regions of stability. However, for large values of throughflow, we found that the actual threshold move from the linear instability threshold with increasing the positive and negative effect of throughflow.
