Abstract Background Functional foods and dairy products are gaining global attention due to their nutritional value and health-promoting characteristics. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are one of the promising components included in these products, thanks to their probiotic properties and ability to produce bioactive compounds such as bacteriocins. On the other hand, ectomycorrhizal wild mushrooms (truffles) are known for their ethnomycological importance. Hence, we aimed to develop a functional dairy product using a bacteriocin-producing LAB isolate that has probiotic potentials together with the bioactive extract of a truffle mushroom. Results Screening for bacteriocin-producing LAB led to the selection of four safe isolates that also showed promising probiotic potentials. Isolate No. 7 was selected due to its wider antimicrobial spectrum and was identified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strain GA7. Out of resulting bands from Tricine SDS-PAGE analysis, a band (its molecular mass was approximately 7 kDa) exhibited antimicrobial activity. Amino acid sequencing of this active band detected 62 amino acid residues with 100% identity to plantaricin ASM1 bacteriocin. Simultaneously, an ethyl acetate extract was prepared from a truffle sample identified as Tirmania pinoyi. Safety of this truffle was confirmed and its extract exerted promising antioxidant and hypocholesterolemic activity. Prepared functional dairy products (Labneh) fortified with L. plantarum GA7 and nano-encapsulated T. pinoyi extract exhibited superior physicochemical, sensory and antioxidant properties compared to control. Moreover, an increase in probiotic count was observed in presence of T. pinoyi extract. Furthermore, prepared Labneh using the bacteriocin-producing L. plantarum GA7 and nano-encapsulated T. pinoyi extract remained unspoiled for over 60 days, compared to control, which spoiled after 21 days. Conclusion Besides improving Labneh physicochemical, sensory and antioxidant properties, the presence of the bacteriocin-producing L. plantarum GA7 has contributed in significantly extending its shelf life, while T. pinoyi extract showed prebiotic influence on probiotic count. As far as we know this is the first study describing production of a functional synbiotic dairy product fortified with bacteriocin-producing probiotic LAB and bioactive T. pinoyi truffle extract.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate stress patterns generated within implant-supported mandibular overdentures retained by two different attachment types: ball and socket and locator attachments. Materials and methods: Commercial CAD/CAM and finite element analysis software packages were utilized to construct two 3D finite element models for the two attachment types. Unilateral masticatory compressive loads of 50, 100, and 150 N were applied vertically to the overdentures, parallel to the longitudinal axes of the implants. Loads were directed toward the central fossa in the molar region of each overdenture, that linear static analysis was carried out to find the generated stresses and deformation on each part of the studied model. Results: According to FEA results the ball attachment neck is highly stressed in comparison to the locator one. On the other hand mucosa and cortical bone received less stresses under ball and socket attachment. Conclusions: Locator and ball and socket attachments induce equivalent stresses on bone surrounding implants. Locator attachment performance was superior to that of the ball and socket attachment in the implants, nylon caps, and overdenture. Locator attachments are highly recommended and can increase the interval between successive maintenance sessions. Aim: To evaluate the mechanical behavior of reciprocating endodontic files, comparing nickeltitanium (NiTi) and stainless steel 316L (St.St. 316L) as manufacturing material for such instruments. Methods: A three-dimensional finite element model was designed for this study. The simplified instrument model geometry was created on commercial CAD/CAM software. Real strain stress curves of St.St. 316L and NiTi were used in the analysis. Non-linear static analysis was performed to simulate the instrument inside root canal at an angle of 45° in the apical portion, and subjected to torsion of 0.3 N.cm. Results: Non-linear NiTi material showed super elasticity and high functionality in such applications. Very high levels of stress appeared in the file at 3 mm from the tip close to yield point. Conclusions: St. St. 316L is not suitable for manufacturing reciprocating instruments. Modeling of the instrument with equivalent circular cross-sectional area did not affect results quality. Reciprocating instruments have short lifespan, thus manufacturers recommend using one file per tooth. Reciprocating instruments are recommended for less experienced dentist.

Background: In recent years, there has been significant interest in using various plant-based phytochemicals with exceptional biological activities as nutraceuticals to prevent the development and advancement of diabetes mellitus and its severe consequences. The extracts of Moringa oleifera L. seeds and Ocimum tenuiflorum L. leaves are used in herbal therapy due to their beneficial effects in combating various disorders, notably diabetes mellitus Purpose: The paper aimed to investigate the incorporation of both free Moringa oleifera L. seed extract and Ocimum tenuiflorum L. leaves extract and nanoencapsulated using whey protein isolate cold gelation ultra-filtration cheese as natural plant-based functional foods and explore both free and nano-encapsulated ultra-filtration cheese impacts as a novel application on diabetic rats through nutritional parameters, biochemical parameters, physicochemical parameters, and sensory evaluation. Methods: Thirty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats were given only one dose of streptozotocin (35 mg/kg body weight) intraperitoneally. The nutritional and biochemical parameters were assessed. The Moringa oleifera L. seed extract and Ocimum tenuiflorum L. leaves extract were successfully encapsulated, and the best ratio added was 75 mg of both, which gave the best results regarding particle size distribution, surface charge and encapsulation efficiency. Results: The Moringa oleifera L. seed extract and Ocimum tenuiflorum L. leaves extract gave the best results regarding particle size distribution, surface charge, and encapsulation efficiency. Their nano-encapsulated forms had increased the total solids, protein, and ash of ultra-filtration cheese. Moringa oleifera L. seed extract and Ocimum tenuiflorum L. leaves extract, nano-encapsulated in ultra-filtration cheese, gave antioxidant activity stability and significantly captured free radicals. The ultra-filtration cheese samples' sensory qualities evaluations received high marks and were suitable for incorporating Moringa oleifera L. seed extract and Ocimum tenuiflorum L. leaves extract nanoparticles in food systems. Conclusion: The nutritional and biochemical parameters confirmed that both nanoencapsulation forms of natural plant sources and functional soft cheese containing nano-encapsulated Moringa oleifera L. seed extract and Ocimum tenuiflorum L. leaves extract demonstrated a potential anti-hyperglycemic effect without any problems.

Functional bioactive ingredients isolated from microalgae as sustainable sources have become a new subject of pharmacology and functional foods. Thus, the work aims to produce crude phycocyanin (C-PC), define it, and investigate its pharmacological effects before warping it in a nanophytosome. Subsequently, the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles were evaluated. Both free and nanophytosomes of C-PC were incorporated into cow milk fermented with the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus KU985435 to make functional yoghurt and the stability of C-PC of both phytosomes was assessed. The amino acid content of C-PC revealed the presence of eight of nine essential amino acids and eight of eleven non-essential amino acids. C-PC has a medium molecular weight (82.992 kDa). Some pharmacological effects like reducing inflammation (98.76 % ± 0.065), fighting free radicals (99.12 % ± 0.027), and being able to inhibit the human coronavirus 229 E with a selective index of 27.9 were observed. The maximum viral inhibitory activity was detected during the adsorption stage. Anti-human liver and colon carcinomas that exceeded Doxorubicin with very low cytotoxicity against normal cell lines were detected. C-PC is an unstable protein that could be degraded in the yoghurt during storage. Therefore, phytosome encapsulation can effectively stabilize C-PC (particle size 44.50 ± 12 nm and zeta-potential −32.4 ± 5 mV) and protect it from the acidic environment of the yoghurt. The produced yoghurt showed the desired physicochemical and functional properties and overall acceptance. The results prove that C-PC from spirulina algae is a renewable source of dyes. The encapsulation process using phytosomes gave it high stability against environmental influences, and therefore, it can be applied in the food and pharmaceutical industries in the future.

Soybean milk is a rich plant-based source of protein, and phenolic compounds. This study compared the nutritional value of soybean milk, flour, soy protein isolate (SPI) and evaluated the impact of prepared vitamin E/calcium salt/soy protein isolate nanoparticles (ECSPI-NPs) on fortification of developed soybean milk formulations. Results indicated that soybean flour protein content was 40.50 g/100 g, that fulfills 81% of the daily requirement (DV%), the unsaturated fatty acids (USFs), oleic and linoleic content was 21.98 and 56.7%, respectively, of total fatty acids content. In soybean milk, essential amino acids, threonine, leucine, lysine achieved 92.70, 90.81, 77.42% of amino acid scores (AAS) requirement values respectively. Ferulic acid was the main phenolic compound in soybean flour, milk and SPI (508.74, 13.28, 491.78 µg/g). Due to the moisture content of soybean milk (88.50%) against (7.10%) in soybean flour, the latest showed higher nutrients concentrations. The prepared calcium (20 mM/10 g SPI) and vitamin E (100 mg/g SPI) nanoparticles (ECSPI-NPs) exhibited that they were effectively synthesized under transmission electron microscope (TEM), stability in the zeta sizer analysis and safety up to IC50 value (202 ug/mL) on vero cell line. ECSPI-NPs fortification (NECM) enhanced significantly phenolic content (149.49 mg/mL), taste (6.10), texture (6.70) and consumer overall acceptance (6.54). Obtained results encourage the application of the prepared ECSPI-NPs for further functional foods applications.

In recent years, CAD/CAM technology has allowed indirect ceramic restorations to become a part of everyday chairside clinical practice. Therefore, the impact of different cavity-preparation designs on the fracture resistance of CAD/CAM fabricated ceramics was assessed in this study. Three designs of cuspal covering (none, palatal, and entire) and two widths of the occlusal isthmus (75% and 100% of the intercuspal distance) were used for the preparation of inlays and onlays to form six groups (n = 10/group). Moreover, thermomechanical cyclic loading was applied to every tooth under a chewing simulator. A universal testing machine was used to measure each group’s fracture resistance. The tested specimens were inspected for any signs of fractures and cracks to categorize failure patterns. Thereby, the values of fracture strength showed that there were statistically nonsignificant differences between the tested groups (p < 0.05). However, a significant difference (p = 0.01) was found between group 1 (inlays) (1950 ± 405) and group 6 (onlays) (3900 ± 770). Type III or type IV fracture modes were seen in the majority of the specimens. In conclusion, inlays and onlays made of zirconia using CAD/CAM technology were deemed reliable for restoring premolars, irrespective of the cavity-preparation design, except for inlays with a 75% intercuspal distance.

Purpose. To compare the efficacy and safety of suprachoroidal and intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide in pseudophakic patients with refractory diabetic macular edema (DME) due to epiretinal membrane (ERM). Study Design. This study is a randomized clinical trial (RCT). Participants. Twenty-three nonvitrectomized pseudophakic eyes of 23 subjects (9 M and 14 F with mean age: 54.8 years) with refractory DME due to ERM. Methods. The eyes were randomized to suprachoroidal triamcinolone acetonide injection 4 mg/0.1 ml (SCTA) (n = 13 eyes) or intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide 4 mg/0.1 ml (IVTA) (n = 10 eyes) and were evaluated at baseline and 1 and 3 months after injection to assess outcome measures. Main Outcome Measures. Changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (primary outcome), central foveal thickness (CFT) by optical coherence tomography (OCT), and intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement (secondary). Results. Baseline median BCVA (logMAR) was 1.0 (range 0.8–1.0) in both groups, improved within the SCTA group to 0.8 on the 1st and 3rd months, while in the IVTA group, median BCVA changed to 0.8 and 0.9 on the 1st and 3rd months, respectively. No significant differences were noted between groups regarding BCVA at baseline (P=0.927), and 1st (P=0.605) and 3rd months (P=0.313). Regarding mean CFT, no significant differences were observed at baseline (P=0.353) and at the first month (P=0.214) between both groups, while at the third month, CFT was significantly higher in the IVTA group (385 um) than in the SCTA group (323 um) (P=0.028). Mean IOP was significantly higher in the IVTA group (15 mmHg) on 1st month than in the SCTA group (12 mmHg) (P=0.011); after 3rd month, IOP was significantly higher within the IVTA group (18 mmHg) than SCTA (14 mmHg) (P=0.028). No significant difference was noted between both groups at baseline IOP (P=0.435). Conclusions. Both SCTA and IVTA are effective in reduction of CFT and improvement of patients’ visual acuity, but with a higher recurrence rate and rise in IOP after IVTA when compared to SCTA. Both treatments have temporary effects with the possibility of recurrence of DME and the need for retreatment.

Increasing demand for higher data-rate wireless connectivity with lower latency is fueling the explorations of millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum and massive MIMO communications. Both technologies are recognized as the key enablers of 5G and beyond 5G (B5G) networks. Hybrid beamforming is one of the most promising energy and cost-effective approaches to realize mmWave massive MIMO communications with lower complexity and smaller training overhead. With the motivation of giving more insights and in-deep technical recommendations to B5G network designers regarding hybrid beamforming, we present a hybrid beamforming taxonomy in terms of channel state information (CSI) availability, frequency bandwidth, architecture complexity, analog beamformer components, number of users, connectivity to RF chains, and the digital and analog beamforming design. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive survey on the state-of-the-art use-cases for each classification followed by identification of the future challenges and open research issues.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a major health concern in developing countries, and these see an increased incidence in pregnant women and children in particular. The contribution of dairy products as natural products in drug delivery approaches is inspiring. This study aimed to analyze the application of iron (Fe) and folic acid (FA) bovine serum albumin-nanoparticles (BSA-NPs) as anti-anemic pharmacological agents that fortify stirred functional yogurt (SFY), comparing these with a plain control and SFY fortified with Fe and FA in free forms. The physicochemical, cytotoxicity, microbiological, viscosity, oxidative interactions, microstructural, sensorial analyses, and bioavailability properties of IDA-induced Albino rats were examined. The Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Zetasizer, and Scan Electron Microscope (SEM) were applied. Nanocapsule-fortified SFY showed an enhanced apparent viscosity, water-holding capacity, microstructure, least lipid oxidation, and overall sensorial acceptability. Feed that included Fe + FA nanocapsule-fortified SFY (G6) succeeded in restoring hemoglobin (16.53 gdL−1), iron (109.25 μgdL−1), ferritin (33.25 μgdL−1), and total protein (8.6 gdL−1) at the end of the 4-week feeding period, with significant competition revealed in calcium and zinc absorbance. Nanocapsule-fortified SFY showed no adverse effects or architectural alterations in the liver, kidney, or spleen, as indicated by biochemical and histological examinations. Bovine serum albumin-nanoparticles (BSA-NPs) of iron (Fe) and folic acid (FA) can be recommended as anti-anemia supplements in different functional food applications.

AIM: To report the intraoperative complications associated with small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and their management. METHODS: This was a retrospective consecutive interventional clinical study, carried out on patients with myopia and myopic astigmatism, who underwent SMILE procedure. Type of intraoperative complications and their management were recorded. RESULTS: Our study comprised 282 eyes of 141 patients who were enrolled for SMILE surgeries. The intraoperative complications included lost vacuum (18 eyes, 6.38%), treatment decentration (6 eyes, 2.12%), wound bleeding (21 eyes, 7.45%), incomplete bubble separation (black islands) (3 eyes, 1.06%), the epithelial defects (15 eyes, 5.32%). Incision tear (27 eyes, 9.57%), lenticule adherence to the cap (6 eyes, 2.12%), and cap perforation occurred in 2 eyes (0.7%). CONCLUSION: Although SMILE is a promising technique for the correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism with predictable, efficient, safe refractive and visual outcomes, complications can occur. However, most of them are related to inexperience and are included in the learning curve of the technique. More studies with a bigger number of eyes are required to efficiently evaluate the intraoperative complications and standardize their management strategies.

The aim of this study was to evaluate Egyptian date palm pollen (DPP) grains composition, physical and functional potentials in comparing with two forms; 80% ethanol extract, and nanoencapsulated form. Functional yoghurt fortified with DPP in three forms was prepared and their physicochemical, microstructure, texture and sensory characteristics were assessed. The micro morphology was explored via Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was employed for functional groups detection. Phenolic compounds were detected by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) while fatty acids were identified via Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC). Cytotoxicity of DPP nanocapsules was evaluated against RPE1 cell line (BJ1). The Egyptian date palm pollen grains evaluation revealed its rich content of protein and carbohydrate (36.28 and 17.14 g/ 100g), high content of Fe, Zn and Mg (226.5, 124.4 and 318 mg/100g), unsaturated fatty acids ω-3, ω-6 and ω-9 (8.76, 20.26 and 7.11 g/100g, which was increased by ethanol extraction) and phenolic compounds especially catechin (191.73 μg/mL) which was pronounced in DPP antioxidant potentials (IC50 35.54 mg/g). The FTIR analyses indicated the presence of soluble amides (proteins) and polysaccharides (fibers) functional groups in DPP. Fortification with nanoencapsulated DPP proved to be safe and the recommended form due to the announced positive characteristics. Yoghurt fortification with DPP forms enhanced viscosity, syneresis and Water Holding Capacity (WHC), which can be considered a symbiotic functional product as it contained both probiotics (106 CFU/g) and prebiotics represented in DPP forms.

Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between filtering bleb parameters (height, extent) and the wideness of the aqueous drainage route beneath the scleral flap using ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in patients who have undergone trabeculectomy with and without mitomycin-C (MMC). Design This was a prospective interventional observation uncontrolled study. Patients and methods A total of 30 patients undergoing 30 glaucoma filtering surgeries were assessed for at least 6 months using UBM to evaluate the bleb reflectivity, the visibility of the route under the scleral flap, the bleb height, and the extent in correlation with the mean intraocular pressure. Patients were divided into two groups: group A included 15 eyes in which trabeculectomy was performed without MMC and group B included 15 eyes in which trabeculectomy was performed with MMC (0.4%) applied for 2 min. Results The reflectivity inside the filtering bleb showed a significant correlation with the maximal width of the aqueous drainage route and the maximal height and the extent of the bleb. Furthermore, the bleb function was significantly associated with its UBM image in eyes trabeculectomized with adjunctive MMC. Conclusion The study concluded that the internal structure of the bleb can be a more sensitive predictor of the outcome of filtering surgery.

Abstract Background Titanium tetrafluoride has been shown to protect tooth enamel from demineralization. This study investigated the effect of incorporating different concentrations of TiF4 (1, 2 and 3 Wt.%) into an orthodontic primer on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets and the enamel microhardness after cariogenic challenges. Methods Three different TiF4 concentrations (1, 2 and 3 Wt.%) were prepared and added to the etch and rinse orthodontic primer. Ninety freshly extracted premolars were randomly divided into five groups according to the experimental primers and ageing conditions: TF0, TF0C, TF1C, TF2C, and TF3C. The TF0C group had no TiF4 in the primer, while TF1C, TF2C, and TF3C had 1, 2 and 3 Wt.% TiF4 in the primer, respectively. In the TF0 group, specimens were immersed in deionized water for 24 h as a control group, while all other groups were immersed in a demineralizing solution for 28 days. Each of the five groups was divided into two subgroups: The first group was subjected to shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index testing (N = 50 teeth, 10/group), while the second group was subjected to enamel surface microhardness testing (N = 25 teeth, 50 tooth halves, 10 tooth halves/group). Fifteen teeth (N = 15 teeth, n = 3/group) representing the five groups were subjected to SEM and microelemental analysis (EDX). SBS, ARI, microhardness, and Ca/P ratio were measured, and the data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's tests. Results The TF2C group had the highest SBS value (9.93 ± 1.23), while the TF0C (5.24 ± 0.65) and TF3C (5.13 ± 0.55) had the lowest SBS values. Abstract Background The surface treatment to improve the repair bond strength may vary because CAD/CAM provisional restoration polymers exhibit a variety of microstructures. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of surface treatments on the repairability of three different CAD/CAM polymers for long-term provisional restorations. Methods Thirty specimens from each provisional restorative materials (CAD-Temp, Everest C-Temp, and PEEK) were divided into three groups: C: surfaces received no treatment; SB: surfaces were airborne particle abraded with 50 μm aluminum oxide; SB-T: surfaces received the same conditions as group SB in addition to thermocycling before and after treatment. Carrot industry processing outputs 50% waste from raw materials; this waste contains polyphenols and carotenoids, which are a significant natural source of pro-vitamin A. Also, yogurt's high consumption globally allows for designing a new functional product. So the goal is to enhance the functionality of fortified stirred yogurt by incorporating carotenoid beads. The carotenoids were extracted from carrot waste using ultrasonication. Then nanoemulsion carotenoids incorporating with alginate to produce beads by extrusion technique. Measurement of carotenoid stability to nanoemulsion and beads. Manufactured five treatments of orange-flavored stirred yogurt and investigated its physicochemical properties, LAB survival, viscosity, and sensory acceptability. Findings – Carrot waste extract had about 44.75 ± 3.15 mg/g of β-carotene. The mean particle size of the nanoemulsion decreased with the increasing carotenoid addition (0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%) of carrot waste extract. The mean diameters of the alginate beads with nanoemulsions were 1.498 ± 0.245, 1.654 ± 0.310, and 1.792 ± 0.454 mm, respectively. The highest chemical stability of carotenoids showed with the alginate beads after Storage at 55°C to 14 days, compared with free or nanoemulsion carotenoids. Yogurt's physicochemical properties, viscosity, and LAB count improve when double-encapsulated carotenoids are added. Carotenoid double-encapsulation appeared to have a high ability to protect carotenoids from degradation and the ability to be applied in dairy and pharmaceutical products. Also, the resultant stirred yogurt with carotenoids-loaded beads gave carotenoids high stability and sensory acceptability.

Plant-derived phenolic compounds have numerous biological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. However, their application is limited because they are degraded under environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to microencapsulate plant phenolic extracts using a complex coacervation method to mitigate this problem. Red beet (RB), broccoli (BR), and spinach leaf (SL) phenolic extracts were encapsulated by complex coacervation. The characteristics of complex coacervates [zeta potential, encapsulation efficiency (EE), FTIR, and morphology] were evaluated. The RB, BR, and SL complex coacervates were incorporated into an ultrafiltered (UF) cheese system. The chemical properties, pH, texture profile, microstructure, and sensory properties of UF cheese with coacervates were determined. In total, 54 male Sprague–Dawley rats were used, among which 48 rats were administered an oral dose of AlCl3 (100 mg/kg body weight/d). Nutritional and biochemical parameters, including malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, catalase, reduced glutathione, nitric oxide, acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, dopamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and glial fibrillary acidic protein, were assessed. The RB, BR, and SL phenolic extracts were successfully encapsulated. The RB, BR, and SL complex coacervates had no impact on the chemical composition of UF cheese. The structure of the RB, BR, and SL complex coacervates in UF cheese was the most stable. The hardness of UF cheese was progressively enhanced by using the RB, BR, and SL complex coacervates. The sensory characteristics of the UF cheese samples achieved good scores and were viable for inclusion in food systems. Additionally, these microcapsules improved metabolic strategies and neurobehavioral systems and enhanced the protein biosynthesis of rat brains. Both forms failed to induce any severe side effects in any experimental group. It can be concluded that the microencapsulation of plant phenolic extracts using a complex coacervation technique protected rats against AlCl3-induced neuroinflammation. This finding might be of interest to food producers and researchers aiming to deliver natural bioactive compounds in the most acceptable manner (i.e., food).

A comparative study was carried out on the essential oils of 10 aromatic plants that are extensively used in Egypt for their distinctive aroma and functional properties. Each essential oil (EO) was characterized by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis and evaluated for its radical scavenging activity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azinobis (2-ethyl-benzolhiaxoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS) assays. The phenolic content of the 10 EOs was in the descending order: clove > thyme > majoram > basil > anise > chamomile > cinnamon > dill > ginger > rosemary. The radical scavenging activity of the EOs was correlated to the presence of phenolic compounds, such as eugenol, thymol, carvacrol and trans-anethol, or the synergism between the antioxidant activity of nonphenolic compounds such as terpinene-4-ol, α-terpinene, curcumene and chamazulene. Clove essential oil exhibited the highest oil content and radical scavenging activity so it was encapsulated, separately, in three coating materials. Sodium alginate showed the highest retention, encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of clove EO. Microencapsulation in sodium alginate and chitosan improved the antioxidant activity and phenolic content of the encapsulated clove EO compared with carboxymethyl cellulose. The results support the possibility of using the encapsulated EOs as natural and easy handle antioxidants.

Background Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy, which can result in irreversible blindness. The main pathologic change in glaucoma is retinal ganglion cell loss. The macula has the greatest density of retinal ganglion cells (∼50%). The advent of spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology has allowed advanced macular imaging protocols to play an important role in the diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma. The ganglion cell analysis is obtained by the Cirrus HD-OCT system segments and measures the thickness of the ganglion cell‑inner plexiform layer, thereby potentially increasing its diagnostic accuracy compared with conventional peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measurement. Patients and methods The study was done on 40 eyes of 40 patients, and patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 included 20 adult patients more than 18 years who were diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma. Group 2 included 20 normal controls. One eye of each individual was prospectively enrolled. The OCT was done using 3D-OCT 2000 (Topcon) to evaluate the following: RNFL parameters (average total thickness, superior average thickness, and inferior average thickness) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) parameters (total average thickness, superior average thickness, and inferior average thickness). Result There was a positive statistically significant correlation of high probability between the two groups regarding RNFL thickness (P
