Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of andiz extract on wound healing and compare it with saline and chlorhexidine gluconate. Microbial DNA load was used to evaluate its antibacterial effects, and gene expression methods were used to assess its contribution to cytokine release and wound healing. Methods and Results: A standardized wound site was created with a 3 mm diameter punch on 32 male Wistar albino rats. The rats were divided into four groups: Control (n = 5), Saline (n = 9), Chlorhexidine gluconate (n = 9), and Andiz extract (n = 9). Five rats in the control group were euthanised without any treatment. Irrigations of the Saline, Chlorhexidine, and Extract groups were provided regularly. After the tissue samples were taken in the 1st week, 2nd week, and 3rd week, three rats were euthanized each week for each group. The total bacterial DNA load on the samples taken was determined by a nano spectrophotometer. β-actin was chosen as housekeeping, and target gene primers were created for TGF-β and IL-1β. Expression amounts of target genes were measured by Real-Time PCR with the application of the created primers. There is a significant difference between the Extract group and the other groups regarding total bacterial DNA load. The whole bacterial load was 185% less than the initial values. TGF-β and IL-1β genes evaluated regarding gene expression were measured at the highest value in the Extract group. Objectives: Bad breath is a condition that negatively affects people's social interactions and quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of thyme mouthwash on intraoral halitosis, gingival index (GI) and plaque index (PI) in patients with gingivitis. Methods: In this retrospective study, 60 gingivitis patients (30 women/30 men) received initial periodontal treatment followed by oral hygiene instructions (OHI) and then were divided into four groups: The control group (C) received only OHI, while chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash was prescribed to the CHX group, Zinc acetate and CHX diacetate mouthwash was prescribed to the zinc acetate and CHX diacetate (ZnA) group, and the thyme (T) group was instructed to use thyme mouthwash. GI, PI and volatile sulfur compound (VSC) values were recorded at baseline and at the first week of treatment. Results: The initial values of the recorded parameters did not differ significantly between the groups. In all groups, VSCs, GI and PI decreased after treatment (p = 0.001). There was no significant difference between the PI values of the groups after treatment (p = 0.188). On the contrary, the GI and VSC values after treatment were significantly different between the groups (p = 0.001). GI values were highest in the control group and lowest in the CHX group. In terms of VSCs, a significant difference was found between groups T and C, and between groups T and ZnA (p = 0.001). Conclusion: This study showed that the use of thyme mouthwash after periodontal treatment was effective in improving bad breath and gingivitis in gingivitis patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The application of autologous platelet concentrates in wound healing and tissue regeneration, especially in the field of dentistry has been developing with time. There are different methods to produce various forms of autologous p latelet concentrates by changing centrifugation speed and time used during preparation and, of course, there is a difference in regeneration capacity according to preparation protocol. In general, autologous platelet concentrates contain various growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin-like growth factors (IGF) and transforming growth factor (TGF-ß) which are considered a key factor in the contribution of periodontal soft and hard tissue regeneration. Autologous platelet concentrates have become more efficient in periodontal and implant surgery due to their positive effects in heal ing acceleration and new soft and hard tissue formation capability in addition to their other favorable advantages, being inexpensive, timesaving and completely taken from patient. The aim of this review article is to briefly explain the forms and generati ons of autologous platelet concentrates, their applications, potential role in periodontal regeneration, and to compare between their uses, efficiency and preparation methods to qualify clinicians to use them properly according to the case to achieve bette r results. This study aims to determine the awareness levels of the individuals about gum health, gum diseases and periodontology and to correlate these values with their demographic and socio-economic characteristics. This cross-sectional epidemiological study included 428 volunteers, who were asked to participate in a specially designed online survey consisting of 6 multiple choice questions through a mobile application. The questionna ire evaluated the sociodemographic, and socio-economic profiles of the participants, their educational status, whether they had any systemic diseases, and their knowledge about periodontal diseases and periodontology. In addition, the patients' perception s of selfcare were also examined. Frequency tables and Chi -square analysis were used for the statistical analysis of the data, where the level of statistical significance was set at p<0.05. A statistically significant relationship was found between gender and tooth brushing (p<0.01). While the prevalence of the habit of tooth brushing at least once a day was 92% in women, this rate was 83.4% for men. There was no statistically significant association between the number of dentist visits and gender, education, or income levels (p>0.05). Although this study demonstrates the presence of basic awareness of oral hygiene in the population with higher education and income levels; the knowledge regarding oral hygiene is still limited in the general population. Thus, comprehensive training programs are needed to improve dental and gum health. Our results also show that it is necessary to ensure that the general population including individuals with higher education and income levels participate in these programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oral surgical procedures cause high-pain expectation and consequent anxiety in patients. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of Er, Cr: YSGG laser and scalpel method on dental anxiety level during second -stage implant surgery. 96 patients with 304 osseointegrated implants were divided into two groups. Implants embedded under the oral mucosa were exposed with scalpel or laser surgery. Before the operation the patients were asked to fill the STAI and DAS while resting in the waiting room. In addition, postoperative daily analgesic use, VAS scores perioperativly and on the postoperative 1st, 2nd and 3rd days and demographic information such as age and gender were also recorded. There was no statistically significant relationship between surgical method and anxiety levels (p>0.05. Also, the differences between the scalpel and laser groups in terms of total DAS and STAI scores were statistically insignificant (p>0.05). But statistically significant difference was found between surgical method and the analgesic consumption (p<0.05). A higher rate of analgesic consumption was observed in the scalpel group. The use of Er,Cr;YSGG laser could reduce pain during minor oral surgical procedures but had no significant effect on dental anxiety. Introduction. Humic acid was previously shown to enhance cutaneous wound healing and show antibacterial properties; however, it has not been used for wound healing in the oral cavity. Thus, the goal of this study was the evaluation of the effect of the humic acid on the healing of excisional wounds in an experimental rat study. Materials and Methods. A circular wound on mid-palatal surfaces was made on a total of 77 Wistar rats by using a 3-mm biopsy punch under anesthesia. The animals were divided into 4 groups as baseline, saline control (0.09%), chlorhexidine gluconate (0.05%), and humic acid (80 mg/kg) and were treated with these materials for 7 days. Results. The rats were observed for 3 weeks in order to track the wound closure rates. Both humic acid treatment and chlorhexidine gluconate treatment resulted in statistically significant enhanced rate of wound closure compared to the saline control on both the 1st and 2nd weeks of treatment. Humic acid treatment for the wounds in the palate resulted in enhanced recovery compared to not only saline control but also chlorhexidine gluconate treatment. Conclusion. In this study, humic acid was shown to enhance healing of oral wounds for the first time in the literature. These findings indicate that humic acid can be used as an alternative to current treatment methods for oral wounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
