This paper investigates bioethanol production from switchgrass, focusing on enhancement of efficiency through various pretreatment methods and comparing two bioethanol production processes: simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) and separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF). Physical, chemical, and biological pretreatment processes are applied to enhance the breakdown of switchgrass's lignocellulosic structure. Effects of pretreatments, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation on ethanol yield are discussed in detail. The comparative analysis reveals that SSF yields higher ethanol outputs within shorter times by integrating hydrolysis and fermentation into a single process. In contrast, SHF offers more control by separating these stages. The comparative analysis highlights that SSF achieves higher ethanol yields more efficiently, although it might restrict SHF's operational flexibility. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current pretreatments, hydrolysis methods, and fermentation processes in bioethanol production from switchgrass, offering insights into their scalability, economic viability, and potential environmental benefits. A review of the current state of the theory and practice of bioenergy production from waste allowed us to identify the scientific and applied problem of substantiating the rational configuration of a modular anaerobic bioenergy system, taking into account the volume of organic waste generated in settlements. To solve this problem, this paper develops an approach and an algorithm for matching the configuration of a modular anaerobic bioenergy production system with the amount of organic waste generated in residential areas. Unlike the existing tools, this takes into account the peculiarities of residential areas, which is the basis for accurate forecasting of organic waste generation and, accordingly, determining the configuration of the bioenergy production system. In addition, for each of the scenarios, the anaerobic digestion process is modeled, which allows us to determine the functional indicators that underlie the determination of a rational configuration in terms of cost and environmental performance. Based on the use of the developed tools for the production conditions of the Golosko residential area, Lviv (Ukraine), possible scenarios for the installation of modular anaerobic bioenergy production systems are substantiated. It was found that the greatest annual benefits are obtained from the processing of mixed food and yard waste. The payback period of investments in modular anaerobic bioenergy production systems for given conditions of a residential area largely depends on their configuration and ranges from 3.3 to 8.4 years, which differ from each other by 2.5 times. This indicates that the developed toolkit is of practical value, as it allows the coordination of the rational configuration of modular anaerobic bioenergy production systems with real production conditions. In the future, it is recommended to use the proposed decision support system to model the use of biomass as an energy resource in residential areas, which ensures the determination of the rational configuration of a modular anaerobic bioenergy production system for given conditions. It is very important for EU countries to achieve energy independence. But this is actually impossible without a high level of use or consumption of renewable energy (RE) sources. Important parameters affecting the consumption of RE sources are as follows: foreign direct investments (FDI), adjusted net savings (ANS), and environmental tax revenues. In the presented work, the likely impact of the above indicators on the level of use of RE sources was estimated using a second-order regression equation. As a result, it was established that the growth of the adjusted net savings indicator and an increase in environmental tax revenues (ETR) have a positive effect on the level of use of RE sources. With significant FDI, the level of ANS does not have a very obvious effect on the growth of the level of use of RE sources. An increase in the level of ANS allows for an increase in ETR, which in turn contributes to an increase in the level of consumption of RE sources. It was also established that an increase in the level of ANS contributes to a more complete realization of the potential of FDI for the development of RE. It has been empirically established that a consistently high consumption of renewable energy sources is actually possible in the countries with a high level of adjusted net savings, high environmental tax revenues, and active attraction of foreign direct investments. While renewable energy sources are getting high interest, amounts of biogas plants have visible increases. In addition to energy, these facilities also produce a nutrient-rich organic material called digestate, which can be utilized as a crop fertilizer. Scientific research on digestate usage has increased with the new environmental protection laws for direct discharges, particularly after the 2000s. The nutrient composition of digestate provides a variable range of applications, rendering it a valuable commodity. In this study, the energy production capacity of Turkey and Poland from biogas power plants are compared, and the case study was used to estimate the amount of digestate produced for both countries. Two recovery technologies, such as organomineral fertilizer production and an innovative technology of super-heated steam torrefaction to produce valuable products and energy from digestate, were presented with their energy potentials. The outcomes of the case study indicate that harnessing digestate as an energy source holds the capability to make a 3.64% to 4.26% contribution to the overall energy consumption of Turkey and Poland through torrefied biochar energy. As per the results derived from the fertilizer case study, the application of digested biomass as a source of organomineral fertilizer holds the capacity to yield approximately 16,142,806 tons and 9,648,142 tons of fertilizer for Turkey and Poland, correspondingly. Anaerobic digestion is a demanding process, due to the large number of process and environmental factors that affect it. Many years of research of the various parameters have made it possible to optimise the process to obtain the maximum amount of biogas and methane contained in it, and this provides energy and environmental benefits. The article deals extensively with the operation of agricultural biogas plants, using the example of a plant that faces numerous operational problems. In order to identify the negative effects on energy yield and the equipment operating in the system, the substrate was examined, the data on its operation analysed, and solutions were proposed that should be taken into account in the further operation of the biogas plant. The analysis showed a good biogas yield from beet pulp of 563 dm3·kg-1 of TS (total solid) and an average methane yield of 58%. With the analysis presented, it was possible to identify some operational problems. The biogas yield study also highlighted some errors made at the plant design stage. The most important of these is the use of an inappropriate organic matter loading factor for the digester, which leads to acidification of the contents and degradation of the methanogenic microorganism cultures. The torrefaction process represents a thermal conversion technique conducted at relatively low temperatures ranging between 200 to 300 °C. Its objective is to produce fuel with a higher energy density by decomposing the reactive portion of hemicellulose. In this study, the kinetics of mass loss during torrefaction were investigated for willow. The experiments were carried out under isothermal conditions using thermogravimetric analysis. Batch torrefaction reactor designs were conducted and explained in detail. Co-combustion of willow with hard coal (origin: Katowice mine) in different mass ratios (25% biomass + 75% coal, 50% biomass + 50% coal, and 75% biomass + 25% coal) was conducted in addition to raw biomass torrefaction. TG/MS analysis (a combination of thermogravimetric analysis with mass spectrometry analysis) was performed in the research. The optimal torrefaction conditions for willow were identified as an average temperature of 245 °C and a residence time of 14 min, resulting in the lowest mass loss (30.15%). However, it was noted that the composition of torgas, a by-product of torrefaction, presents challenges in providing a combustible gas with sufficient heat flux to meet the energy needs of the process. Prolonged residence times over 15 min and higher average temperatures above 250 °C lead to excessive energy losses from volatile torrefaction products, making them suboptimal for willow. On the other hand, the co-combustion of torrefied biomass with hard coal offers advantages in reduced sulfur emissions but can lead to increased NOx emissions when biomass with a higher nitrogen content is co-combusted in proportions exceeding 50% biomass. This paper presents an analysis and the research results of system couplers in CAx systems that ensure the correct transfer of product data from the "supplier" system to the "recipient" system. This study presents the results of the compatibility tests between the systems based on the verification of geometric models and their attributes after importing/exporting 2D and 3D objects using neutral data exchange formats. The purpose of the research was to identify neutral formats that do not introduce errors after data transversion in certain types of geometry. Tests and analyses were carried out on selected formats depending on the type of object, such as 2D objects (DXF), solid objects (IGES, STEP, SAT, and PARASOLID), and surface objects (IGES, STEP, SAT, and X_T). In this paper authors present research results which are the optimum parameters of the torrefaction process using straw from oats and maize. The most important parameters for the torrefaction process are temperature and residence time. Both parameters are essential to designing and construction of industrial biomass torrefaction installations. Energy crops and waste coming from agricultural production have the most promising perspective from all kind of renewable energy sources in Poland. Currently, intensive studies on the process of biomass torrefaction are being carried out. In this experimental investigation, authors examined the torrefaction process of two types of agriculture biomass, such as: oats, maize. The main overarching objective of the experimental studies described below is the development of various biochar as an additive to agricultural fertilizers resulting from the conversion of biomass from agriculture residues – straw from oats and maize. The last of enumerated biomasses is treated through different conversion processes such as: drying, torrefaction to homogenize their physical and chemical properties. Among many of its areas, it is extremely important to optimize the production of biomass energy plants and its refinement (in the torrefaction process), which will improve the balance and profitability of energy production from RES, and reduce the logistics and storage costs of this fuel and improve the efficiency of biomass combustion process. When implementing new technologies indicated in this work and optimizing the harvesting of plant biomass, the negative impact on the environment caused by stored municipal waste can be reduced. Kitchen waste could be processed and recycled into safe fertilizers/soil improvers for sustainable agriculture through different methods: (1) Dried pellets from model kitchen waste treated with anaerobic effective microorganisms; and (2) Anaerobically digested kitchen waste. For comparison, a commercial mineral fertilizer was used. These methods were applied in two separate glasshouse experiments: one under cool (mainly winter) conditions (X–IV) and one under warm (mainly summer) conditions (VI–X) consisting of 3–4 subsequent harvests in northern Poland. Comparing the food waste agronomic performance after anaerobic digestion and effective microorganism treatments, especially under different climatic conditions, is a novel approach. Kitchen waste served as a much better fertilizer than mineral fertilizer, but only during the cool season. In addition, it provided 20–40% more plant yields for dosages >120 kg N/ha and a similar N uptake. In the warm season, in comparison to effective microorganism-incubated kitchen waste, its anaerobic digestion improved the relative agronomic effectiveness twice after 30 days of growth (82% versus 43%). However, the total effectiveness for anaerobically digested kitchen waste versus pelleted and effective microorganism-incubated kitchen waste was 32% versus 27% (N utilization-wise) and 36% versus 21% (plant biomass yield-wise). The Monod kinetic model was applied for the internal efficiency of N utilization; for the best fitting procedure, R2 > 0.96 for the cool season and R2 > 0.92 for the warm season. Kitchen waste introduced to the soil provided better soil properties than mineral fertilizer. A fundamental issue of waste management and the rail transport industry is the problem of utilizing used railroad ties. Wooden railroad ties are treated with a preservative, usually creosote. Due to their high toxicity, railroad ties are considered hazardous waste and must be utilized under various directives. It is proposed to utilize the troublesome waste by using the pyrolysis and torrefaction process. The research proves that the thermal method is effective for disposing of this type of waste. Torrefaction up to 250 °C gives high efficiency of impregnation removal, while pyrolysis up to 400 °C completely neutralizes waste. A series of experiments were conducted for various final pyrolysis temperatures to determine a minimum temperature for which the obtained solid products are free from creosote. Extraction with the use of the Soxhlet technique was performed for the raw materials and the obtained solid products—chars. The oil content for liquid fraction was also examined for each sample. As a result of the thermal treatment of the waste, fuel with combustion parameters better than wood was obtained. The impregnation of elements made of wood is one of the most important stages of their maintenance and the modification of their parameters. Incorrectly prepared material is sensitive to moisture, fungi, algae or weather conditions. In the case of large wooden elements or ready-made installations, impregnation is often performed not indoors, but outdoors. Despite the obvious advantages, this solution also has a number of disadvantages. One of them is the long duration of the impregnation process, as well as the variability in the process parameters along with changing weather conditions. In addition, the final material properties may differ not only from batch to batch, but also within the batch. In order to eliminate these problems, the equipment for wood impregnation was modernized. As part of the work, models of installation elements were made, a computer simulation was performed, and the necessary design calculations were carried out. The work will be crowned with the practical implementation of the proposed solutions in test equipment and the verification of design assumptions. The depletion of fossil fuels has led to a search for new methods of fuel and chemical production from biomass. One of the methods of converting biomass into valuable products is the process of pyrolysis. This process has been extensively researched in recent years due to the rising prices of energy and chemicals. This work contains basic information on the pyrolysis process concerning the individual components present in the biomass and the types of biomass used in the pyrolysis process. Particular attention was paid to sewage sludge, the management of which is a big challenge. The influence of the most important process parameters (temperature, heating rate, residence time of the solid and vapor, reaction atmosphere) on the pyrolysis products (char, oil, and gas) was presented. The paper presents an overview of the reactors used in the pyrolysis process, from slow to fast pyrolysis, together with their efficiency, advantages, and disadvantages. The analysis of the application of other thermochemical processes for producing the energy used in the process of pyrolysis and in the drying of the biomass was carried out. This study was carried out to estimate the relevance of biological supplementation in improving the economic efficiency of anaerobic digestion (AD). Three kinds of silages—maize, grass, and igniscum—were initially inoculated with digestate and then supplemented with one of four vaccines containing different bacteria species (APD®, PPT®, JENOR®) or a yeast and mold mixture (HAP®). In addition, each plant silage was fermented without any additives (control A—maize silage, B—grass silage, and C—igniscum silage). The biodegradability process was performed in batch tests at a mesophilic temperature (38 °C). To compare the energetic efficiency of AD, the process kinetics, biogas, and methane production were analyzed. We found that the applied supplementation measures improved biogas production in the case of maize and igniscum (7–62% higher than controls), but decreased the yield of AD when grass silage was fermented (2–34% lower than controls). The greatest increase in methane production (by 79%) was observed when maize silage was digested with the PPT® pretreatment, with 427 Nm3∙Mg−1 VS (volatile solids). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study presents a practical application of multi-criteria standardization of machines and devices in the design of the automated production processes in industry 4.0 and its direct impact on the economic aspects of an enterprise, along with a comparison of the state before and after the implementation of the proposed changes. The solutions recommended in the article also fit into the assumptions of low-carbon development by implementing solutions that reduce energy consumption. The research carried out and presented in the text confirmed the effectiveness of the described solution. The study also presents examples confirming the correctness of implementing standardization, synergy and coherence in the design of production processes. The tanning industry generates significant amounts of solid waste and post-production wastewater, which should be managed in accordance with the principles of the circular economy. Waste is generated at various technological stages of production. This comprises mainly solid waste and leachate. A comprehensive solution to the problem of disposal of this waste is very important from economic and environmental points of view. This work presents research for a technological production line designed for the comprehensive processing of post-production residues. In the present paper, the authors present an analysis related to the possibility of processing leather flesh side (mizdra) as a substrate for methane fermentation. The study showed an increased biogas production from solid waste after enzymatic hydrolysis up to 248 Nm3/Mg. Preliminary research on the system designed for pre-treatment of sewage from the technological line is also presented. The study showed a COD reduction of more than 30%. This paper offers an algorithm to account for potential actions on the efficient production of renewable energy. The algorithm consists of a substantiated choice of a certain type of renewable energy, the evaluation of its potential, and the regulation of the processes of obtaining that renewable energy. Also, potential resources for agricultural biofuel production have been analyzed and it has been determined that there is real biomass potential in Lithuania. It will thus be beneficial to make appropriate managerial decisions on the methods of biofuel processing and consumption, as well as on means of receiving the economic, energy and environmental effects. The total potential of by-product biomass of crop production was determined, and the thermal and electric potential of the crop by-products were calculated. Additionally, the potential for production of gas-like types of fuel (biomethane, biohydrogen, and syngas) from crop by-products was determined. The potential for the production of diesel biofuel from oil crop waste (bran) was also found, and the potential for livestock by-products for receiving gas-like types of fuel (biomethane, biohydrogen) was established. The corresponding thermal and electric equivalents of the potential were found and the potential volumes of the biomethane and biohydrogen production were calculated. The total energy equivalent equals, on average, 30.017 × 106 GJ of the thermal energy and 9.224 × 106 GJ of the electric energy in Lithuania. The total potential of biomethane production (taking into account crop production and animal husbandry wastes) on average equals 285.6 × 106 m3. The total potential of biohydrogen production on average equals 251.9 × 106 m3. The cost equivalents of the energy potential of agrarian biomass have been calculated. The average cost equivalent of the thermal energy could equal EUR 8.9 billion, electric energy—EUR 15.9 billion, biomethane—EUR 3.3 billion and biohydrogen—EUR 14.1 billion. The evaluation of the agricultural biomass potential as a source of renewable energy confirmed that Lithuania has a large biomass potential and satisfies the needs for the production of renewable energy. A review of the potential areas of algal biomass utilization has already been conducted. In addition to lowering the greenhouse effect and contributing to the decrease in the amounts of harmful substances in the air and water, attention has been paid to the possibility of utilizing algal biomass as a feedstock for the production of environmentally friendly products. The circular economy addresses the benefits to the environment, economy and society. The utilization of algal biomass benefits the environment by reducing greenhouse gases emissions as well as water and wastewater treatment, benefits the economy by producing biofuels, and benefits society by producing food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers and feed for animals. Major efforts are currently being made in the research community to address the challenges of greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion by using lignocellulosic biomass, agricultural waste, and forest residues as cleaner energy sources. However, its poor qualities, such as low energy density, high moisture content, irregular shape and size, and heterogeneity, make it impossible to utilize in its natural state. Torrefaction, a simple heat treatment method, is used frequently with natural bioresources to improve their thermal characteristics so that they may be used as energy sources in domestic power plants. The quality of the resulting torrefied solids (biochar) is determined by the heat condition settings in the absence of oxygen, and it may be enhanced by carefully selecting and altering the processing parameters. The comprehensive overview presented here should serve as a useful toolkit for farmers, combined heat and power plants, pulp and paper installations, and other industrial plants that use biomass as a substrate for biofuel production. This research focuses on torrefaction product properties, reaction mechanisms, a variety of technologies, and torrefaction reactors. It is impossible to determine which torrefaction technology is superior as each reactor has unique properties. This work presents the results of research on the thermo-chemical conversion of woody biomass–pine wood coming from lodzkie voivodship forests and sewage sludge from the Group Sewage Treatment Plant of the Łódź Urban Agglomeration. Laboratory scale analyses of the carbonization process were carried out, initially using the TGA technique (to assess activation energy (EA)), followed by a flow reactor operating at temperature levels of 280–525 °C. Both the parameters of carbonized solid biofuel and biochar as a carrier for fertilizer (proximate and ultimate analysis) and the quality of the torgas (VOC) were analyzed. Analysis of the pine wood and sewage sludge torrefaction process shows clearly that the optimum process temperature would be around 325–350 °C from a mass loss ratio and economical perspective. This paper shows clearly that woody biomass, such as pine wood and sewage sludge, is a very interesting material both for biofuel production and in further processing for biochar production, used not only as an energy carrier but also as a new type of carbon source in fertilizer mixtures. One of the solid waste produced during the combustion of coal are fly ashes. Disposal challenges and environmental consequences are the results of significant process yield and atmospheric emission of fly ashes. The exact chemical composition of FA depends mainly on the type of utilised fuel and combustion conditions. It consists mainly of chemically stable metal oxides, such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, SiO2, CaO, MgO, K2O, Na2O and TiO2, but its toxicity is related to the possible presence of some trace elements, such as As, Hg, Cd, Se and Cr. The chemical and physical properties of fly ash (e.g., particle size distribution, porosity, and surface area) make it suitable as an adsorbent to remove various impurities from process flows such as flue gas stream. Its suitability for capturing mercury from flue gas was experimentally confirmed due to its abundant supply, particle size, bulk density, porosity, chemical composition and low cost. Hence, the use of fly ash as adsorbents and precursors for the production of heavy metal adsorbents is of great practical importance, as it reduces the cost of mercury capture and alleviates the problems associated with the disposal of solid waste. Studies showed that the chemical components present in fly ash additives could stimulate catalytic oxidative capacity, which increases the adsorption of Hg0 oxidation and adsorption of both Hg and CO2. The presented study analysed fly ashes from different zones of the electrostatic precipitator and verified their suitability for removing impurities from flue gases, i.e., mercury and carbon dioxide. The results outlined modified fly ash as having good Hg and CO2 removal capabilities. The adsorption efficiency of Hg reached 92% for Hg and 66% for CO2, while untreated fly ash reached 67% for Hg and 59% for CO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of foliar application of Cyanobacteria and Chlorella sp. monocultures on physiological activity, element composition, development and biomass weight of basket willow (Salix viminalis L.) and the possibility to prepare biofuel from it in the fortification process was studied. Triple foliar plant spraying with non-sonicated monocultures of Cyanobacteria (Anabaena sp. PCC 7120, Microcystis aeruginosa MKR 0105) and Chlorella sp. exhibited a considerably progressive impact on metabolic activity and development of plants. This biofertilization increased cytomembrane impermeability, the amount of chlorophyll in plants, photosynthesis productivity and transpiration, as well as degree of stomatal opening associated with a decreased concentration of intercellular CO2, in comparison to control (treatments with water, Bio-Algeen S90 or with environmental sample). The applied strains markedly increased the element content (N, P, K) in shoots and the productivity of crucial growth enzymes: alkaline or acid phosphorylase, total dehydrogenases, RNase and nitrate reductase. Treatments did not affect energy properties of the burnt plants. These physiological events were associated with the improved growth of willow plants, namely height, length and amount of all shoots and their freshly harvested dry mass, which were increased by over 25% compared to the controls. The effectiveness of these treatments depended on applied monoculture. The plant spraying with Microcystis aeruginosa MKR 0105 was a little more effective than treatment with Chlorella sp. and Anabaena sp. or the environmental sample. The research demonstrate that the studied Cyanobacteria and Chlorella sp. monocultures have prospective and useful potential in production of Salix viminalis L., which is the basic energy plant around the word. In this work, a special batch reactor was used to produce torrefaction material in an inert atmosphere: nitrogen, thermogravimetric analysis and DTA analysis, like Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The combustion process of Salix viminalis L. with TG-MS analysis was conducted as well as study on a willow torrefaction process, obtaining 30% mass reduction with energy loss close to 10%. Comparing our research results to other types of biomasses, the isothermal temperature of 245 °C during thermo-chemical conversion of willow for the carbonized solid biofuel production from Salix viminalis L. biomass fertilized with Cyanobacteria and Chlorella sp. is relatively low. Road transport is one of the key elements of economic development that helps build social and territorial cohesion. The economic development that has taken place in Poland over the last three decades has led to an improvement in road infrastructure throughout the country. Construction of new roads and improvement of existing ones promotes economic development. However, as the number of cars increases, so does the level of air emissions. In reducing pollutant emissions, the analysis of the technological possibilities used and the improvement of their efficiency with the simultaneous minimization of generated pollution is also of particular importance. The purpose of the publication is to present development trends in road transport in Poland and the possibility of reducing emissions in this respect. The method of analysing strategic documents and statistical data was used to achieve this goal. The development of urban transport in recent years has become one of the most important issues related to improving the quality of life in Polish cities. Excessive pollution in the form of greenhouse gases and other harmful substances from buses affects people's health as does the excessive noise. This article analysed the measures being taken to reduce emissions, and the results showed that it is possible to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 28 thousand megagrams (Mg) per annum. Policymakers in Poland should consider limiting electricity generation through coal combustion and recognize, at least temporarily, CNG/LNG-powered buses as low-carbon rolling stock and co-finance their purchase and the necessary infrastructure. The article presents the application of the Fourier series to theoretical considerations on the method of maximum temperature control in thermodynamic cycles of internal combustion engines equipped with an additional independent kinematic system. The analysis assumes that the processes are zero-dimensional and the gases consumed in the engine cycles are perfect, simplifying the considerations for temperature control as a function of the two variables, pressure and volume, of which the volume as a geometric quantity can be completely controlled. In view of this fact, a predetermined temperature curve was assumed, ultimately reducing the considerations of specific volume changes, that is to say a kinematic system that could implement these changes. Moreover, in the analysis of volume changes, a cycle not used so far in the description of internal combustion engines was used. In the next step, the cycle was modified using the popular Vibe function, which was replaced in the theoretical cycle by two isochoric and isothermal transformations. Heat exchange was completely omitted in the considerations, in that it is of secondary importance, ultimately bringing the temperature function to the function of one variable, the angle of rotation of the crankshaft. Then, the kinematics was divided into the kinematics of the crank-piston system and the additional system, which was approximated with five words from the Fourier series, which in the technique correspond, for example, to the system of oscillators. At the end of the article we have explained one of the ways of actual technical implementation using a single nonlinear oscillator, the so-called ACC system equivalent to a few words from the mentioned Fourier series. The research presented by the authors in this paper focused on understanding the behavior of mercury during coal combustion and flue gas purification operations. The goal was to determine the flue gas temperature on the mercury emissions limits for the combustion of lignites in the energy sector. The authors examined the process of sorption of mercury from flue gases using fine-grained organic materials. The main objectives of this study were to recommend a low-cost organic adsorbent such as coke dust (CD), corn straw char (CS-400), brominated corn straw char (CS-400-Br), rubber char (RC-600) or granulated rubber char (GRC-600) to efficiently substitute expensive dust-sized activated carbon. The study covered combustion of lignite from a Polish field. The experiment was conducted at temperatures reflecting conditions inside a flue gas purification installation. One of the tested sorbents—tire-derived rubber char that was obtained by pyrolysis—exhibited good potential for Hg0 into Hg2+ oxidation, resulting in enhanced mercury removal from the flue. The char characterization increased elevated bromine content (mercury oxidizing agent) in comparison to the other selected adsorbents. This paper presents the results of laboratory tests of mercury sorption from the flue gases at temperatures of 95, 125, 155 and 185 °C. The average mercury content in Polish lignite was 465 μg·kg−1. The concentration of mercury in flue gases emitted into the atmosphere was 17.8 µg·m−3. The study analyzed five low-cost sorbents with the average achieved efficiency of mercury removal from 18.3% to 96.1% for lignite combustion depending on the flue gas temperature. This paper presents an analysis of methods to increase the efficiency of heat transfer in heat exchangers. The scope of the research included analysis of efficiency optimization using the example of two tubular heat exchanger structures most often used in industry. The obtained efficiency of heat recovery from the ground of the examined exchangers was over 90%, enabling the reduction of emissions of the heating systems of buildings. The paper presents the results of tests of two types of heat pipes using R134A, R404A, and R407C working agents. The paper also presents the results of experimental tests using the R410A working medium. The results included in the study will also enable the effective use of land as a heat store. Municipal waste management system modeling based on the mass balance of individual waste streams allows us to answer the question of how the system will react to organizational changes, e.g., to the expected reduction in the amount of plastics or the introduction of a deposit for glass and/or plastic packaging. Based on the data on Polish municipal solid waste and the forecast of changes in its quantity and composition, as well as demographic data, a balance model was prepared to assess the impact of introducing higher and higher levels of recycling, in accordance with the circular economy assumptions on the waste management system. It has been shown that, for the Polish composition of municipal waste, even if the assumed recycling levels of individual streams are achieved, achieving the general target level of 65% recycling in 2025/30 may not be feasible. The possibility of achieving a higher level of recycling will be possible due the introduction of selective ash collection from individual home furnaces, while the impact of reducing the amount of plastics or introducing a deposit on packaging is minimal. The calculations also showed that, to complete the waste management system in Poland, we need at least 3.5 million Mg/year of incineration processing capacity and the present state (approx. 1.3 million Mg/year) is insufficient. Miscanthus is resistant to dry, frosty winters in Poland and most European Union countries. Miscanthus gives higher yields compared to native species. Farmers can produce Miscanthus pellets after drying it for their own heating purposes. From the third year, the most efficient plant development begins, resulting in a yield of 25–30 tons of dry matter from an area of 1 hectare. Laboratory scale tests were carried out on the processes of drying, compacting, and torrefaction of this biomass type. The analysis of the drying process was conducted at three temperature levels of the drying agent (60, 100, and 140 °C). Compaction on a hydraulic press was carried out in the pressure range characteristic of a pressure agglomeration (130.8–457.8 MPa) at different moisture contents of the raw material (0.5% and 10%). The main interest in this part was to assess the influence of drying temperature, moisture content, and compaction pressure on the specific densities (DE) and the mechanical durability of the pellets (DU). In the next step, laboratory analyses of the torrefaction process were carried out, initially using the Thermogravimetric Analysis TGA and Differential Scaning Calorimeter DSC techniques (to assess activation energy (EA)), followed by a flow reactor operating at five temperature levels (225, 250, 275, 300, and 525 °C). A SEM analysis of Miscanthus after torrefaction processes at three different temperatures was performed. Both the parameters of biochar (proximate and ultimate analysis) and the quality of the torgas (volatile organic content (VOC)) were analyzed. The results show that both drying temperature and moisture level will affect the quality of the pellets. Analysis of the torrefaction process shows clearly that the optimum process temperature would be around 300–340 °C from a mass loss ratio and economical perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work concerns non-pressure granulation of mineral materials used for the production of agricultural fertilizers for soil deacidification. In order to expand the product range of Nordkalk Poland sp. z o. o. located in Poland, the granulation conditions of the gypsum–lime mix were examined with the use of various granulation methods. The processed mixture was Jurassic lime flour mined in the Sławno mine (Poland) and waste gypsum (sulfogypsum) obtained from the largest coal-fired power plant in the EU, Bełchatów Power Plant (Poland). This paper presents the results of the optimization of the gypsum–lime fertilizer granulation process. The results of the study of granulation of gypsum–lime mixture realized in one-stage technology in a disc granulator were compared with the effects of two-stage agglomeration. During the research, a mixture (in a 1:1 ratio) of waste sulfogypsum and lime flour was used. Such a weight ratio provides maximum use of the sulfogypsum waste while maintaining good mechanical properties of the granulate. The granulated bed was moistened with a lignosulfonate solution. The process was carried out periodically. After the experiment, the grain composition of the granulate obtained was determined and tests were performed to determine the strength of the product. The test results were compared with analogous ones obtained during granulation with the use of molasses (waste from sugar production). This paper presents an analysis of hydrodynamics in a tank with a 45° and 60° pitched blade turbine impeller operating while emptying the mixer and with an axial agitator working during axial pumping-down of water at different water levels above the impeller. Measurements made with the PIV method confirmed the change in direction of pumping liquid after the level dropped below the critical value, with an almost unchanged liquid stream flowing through the mixer. It was found that an increase in the value of the tangential velocity in the area of the impeller took place and the quantity of this increase depended on the angle of the blade pitch and the rotational frequency of the impeller. The excessive air pollution in the Lubuskie Voivodeship and throughout Poland is a very serious problem. One of the main causes of poor air quality is low emission, which arises at a short distance from the ground (up to 40 m). The real reduction of low emission requires a series of measures. The most important of them, include replacement of non-ecological boilers heating single-family buildings, improvement of thermal insulation of outer building walls, development of public transport, limiting the movement of old, non-ecological cars, conducting extensive educational activities, economic support for the poorest families in pro-ecological activities, and development of district heating in urban areas. The issue of thermal modernization is also important from the point of view of ensuring an appropriate level of energy security in the social dimension. The article presents a scenario analysis of activities aimed at reducing low emission through economic support for thermal modernization of single-family houses in the Lubuskie Voivodeship in Poland. The results of the conducted research prove that it is possible to carry out thermal modernization of over 12% of all single-family buildings in the Lubuskie voivodeship, assuming that the co-financing would amount to 60% of the costs of such an investment. The analyses carried out in the article are closely related to low carbon development, and a significant part of emission of harmful substances into the air comes from heating single-family buildings in urban and rural areas. This paper presents the results of research on the granulation process of leather industry waste, i.e., tanning shavings. It is economically justified to granulate this waste together with mineral additives that are useful in the processes of their further processing. Unfortunately, the granulation of raw, unsorted shavings does not obtain desired results due to their unusual properties. In this study, the possibilities of agglomeration of this waste were examined by a new method consisting of the production and then the granulation of wet pulp. During granulation, no additional binding liquid is added to the granulated bed. As part of this work, the specific surface of granulated shavings, the granulometric composition of the obtained agglomerates, and their strength parameters were determined. The use of a vibrating disc granulator, the addition of a water glass solution (in the pulp), dolomite, and gypsum made it possible to obtain durable, mechanically stable granules. The application of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) allows simulating the movement of a particle of any shape in a conveyor. The DEM method uses the assumptions of the Lagrange calculation model, in which each particle in the domain is tracked individually. It makes it possible to conduct a thorough examination of the behavior of the entire bulk material bed consisting of a set of elements with characteristic physicochemical properties. Therefore, the deposit is not considered according to averages and constants, e.g., strength values, but as a set of elements that can be described individually. The article presents the results of a simulation, with the use of the Discrete Elements Method (DEM), of the process of soft fruit transport in the food industry. The results of the research and exemplary simulations of blueberry fruit transport are presented. The influence of the type of a transport device on the values of normal and tangential forces occurring between the blueberry fruit and structural elements of the transport device, as well as the interaction between the fruits, were modeled. In addition, based on the amount of energy absorbed by each fruit due to collisions, the analysis of the energy spectrum of collisions of particles was carried out to determine the likelihood of damage to the fruit in transport and to identify the phenomena that favor it. The stationary photovoltaic array can be used to charge the different vehicle batteries and, in parallel, be used as a power source for the utility grid or standalone devices placed such as in campers. The main objective of the study was to compare chosen electrical characteristics of two assemblies with each containing the same PV array, boost converter and inverter, and a different battery, such as the Li-S one and the Li-ion one, respectively. Differences occurring during modelling of Li-ion and Li-S batteries were discussed. The model of the chosen photovoltaic array was used during analysis. The models based on electrical equivalent circuits for Li-ion battery and of Li-S battery were utilized during calculations. The models of the boost converter and boost inverter of known topology parameters were utilized during simulations. In the chosen performances (courses of voltages and currents versus time) obtained from the simulation of the sets composed of the Li-S battery cooperating with the boost inverter or the boost converter, only small differences or no differences occurred when compared to the case of the Li-ion battery. The aim of the research was to investigate the effect of biogas plant waste on the physiological activity, growth, and yield of Jerusalem artichoke and the energetic usefulness of the biomass obtained in this way after the torrefaction process. The use of waste from corn grain biodigestion to methane as a biofertilizer, used alone or supplemented with Apol-humus and Stymjod, caused increased the physiological activity, growth, and yield of Jerusalem artichoke plants and can limit the application of chemical fertilizers, whose production and use in agriculture is harmful for the environment. The experiment, using different equipment, exhibited the high potential of Jerusalem artichoke fertilized by the methods elaborated as a carbonized solid biofuel after the torrefaction process. The use of a special design of the batch reactor using nitrogen, Thermogravimetric analysis, Differential thermal analysis, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and combustion of Jerusalem artichoke using TG-MS showed a thermo-chemical conversion mass loss on a level of 30% with energy loss (torgas) on a level of 10%. Compared to research results on other energy crops and straw biomass, the isothermal temperature of 245 °C during torrefaction for the carbonized solid biofuel of Jerusalem artichoke biomass fertilized with biogas plant waste is relativlely low. Carbonation lime mud is a by-product formed during the production of sugar in the process of raw beetroot juice purification. On average, during one campaign, over 12,000 tons of carbonation lime mud is obtained in the operation of one sugar production plant. It is stored in prisms, which negatively affects the environment. The chemical properties of carbonation lime mud allow using it as a soil improver. This article presents the results of research into the development of carbonation lime mud disposal technology and its management. The chemical composition and physical properties of waste were determined. It has been proposed to use carbonation lime mud as the basic raw material in the production of mineral–organic fertilizers. Tests were conducted in a disc granulator. The granulated material was wetted with water and aqueous solution of molasses. Carbonation lime mud is a material that is easily subjected to the granulation process, using any wetting liquid. The beds wetted with 33% and 66% solutions of molasses are characterized by a greater homogeneity and smaller size of the obtained product. During experiments in which wetting with water was applied, the product obtained after drying demonstrated low resistance to compression; granules wetted with 33% aqueous solution of molasses demonstrated resistance to compression below 10 N; and granules wetted with 66% aqueous solution of molasses demonstrated resistance to compression above 10 N. The process of biomass compaction depends on many factors, related to material and process. One of the most important is the proper fragmentation of the raw material. In most cases, more fragmented raw material makes it easier to achieve the desired quality parameters of pellets or briquettes. While the chipping of biomass prefers moist materials, for grinding, the material needs to be dried. As drying temperature changes the properties of the material, these may affect the grinding process. The aim of this work was to determine the influence of the drying temperature of biomass raw material in the range of 60–140 °C on the biomass grindability. To only determine this effect, without the influence of moisture, grinding was carried out on the material in a dry state. The research was carried out on a mill with a knife and hammer grinding system, which is the most popular in the fragmentation of biomass. The analysis of particle size distribution and bulk density of the obtained material was carried out. Growing ecological standards force the implementation of solutions that will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly important in Poland, whose energy system is almost 80% based on coal. In the interest of low carbon development it is worth considering the optimization of existing old coal-based power plants. The main goal of the research was to present the benefits of modernization of existing boiler equipment and to analyze the combustion process of various types of coal sorts that have a significant impact on the optimization of the production processes of energy media. An analysis of the processes occurring in boiler devices during the combustion of fuel was carried out, which had a significant impact on the quality of generated heat and electricity. The conducted research defined technological solutions for boiler structures that have a significant impact on improving the efficiency of the technological process in heating plants and the characteristics of coal as energy fuel. Practical technical and modernization solutions have been proposed that contribute to the optimization of coal combustion processes, resulting in increased energy efficiency of the heating plant. This publication presents research work which contains the optimum parameters of the agri-biomass: maize and oat straws torrefaction process. Parameters which are the most important for the torrefaction process and its products are temperature and residence time. Thermogravimetric analysis was performed as well as the torrefaction process using an electrical furnace on a laboratory scale at a temperature between 250–525 °C. These biomass torrefaction process parameters—residence time and temperature—were necessary to perform the design and construction of semi-pilot scale biomass torrefaction installations with a regimental dryer and a woody and agri-biomass regimental torrefaction reactor to perform a continuous torrefaction process using superheated steam. In the design installation the authors also focused on biochar, a bi-product of biofuel which will be used as an additive for natural bio-fertilizers. Kinetic analysis of torrefaction process using maize and oat straws was performed using NETZSCH Neo Kinetics software. It was found that kinetic analysis methods conducted with multiple heating rate experiments were much more efficient than the use of a single heating rate. The best representations of the experimental data for the straw from maize straw were found for the n-order reaction model. A thermogravimetric analysis, TG-MS analysis and VOC analysis combined with electrical furnace installation were performed on the maize and oat straw torrefaction process. The new approach in the work presented is different from that of current scientific achievements due to the fact that until now researchers have worked on performing processes on oat and maize straws by means of the torrefaction process for the production of a biochar as an additive for natural bio-fertilizers. None of them looked for economically reasonable mass loss ratios. In this work the authors made the assumption that a mass loss in the area of 45–50% is the most reasonable loss for the two mentioned agri-biomass processes. On this basis, a semi-pilot installation could be produced in a further BIOCARBON project step.
