Purpose: Artificial intelligence (AI) holds great potential for revolutionizing health care by providing clinicians with data-driven insights that support more accurate and efficient clinical decisions. However, applying AI in clinical settings is often challenging due to the complexity and vastness of medical information. This perspective article explores how AI development methodologies can be adapted to support clinicians in their decision-making processes, emphasizing the importance of a hybrid approach that combines AI capabilities with clinicians' expertise. Patients and Methods: We developed a conceptual framework designed to integrate AI-driven hybrid intelligence into clinical practice to enhance decision-making. This framework focuses on adapting key AI concepts, such as backpropagation, quantization, and avoiding overfitting, to help clinicians better interpret complex medical data and improve diagnosis and treatment planning. Results: Several AI methodologies were adapted to enhance clinical decision-making. First, backpropagation allows clinicians to refine initial assessments by revisiting them as new data emerges, improving diagnostic accuracy over time. Second, quantization helps break down complex medical problems into manageable components, enabling clinicians to prioritize critical elements of care. Finally, avoiding overfitting encourages clinicians to balance rare diagnoses with more common explanations, reducing the risk of diagnostic errors and unnecessary complexity. Conclusion: The integration of AI-driven hybrid intelligence has the potential to enhance clinical decision-making. By adapting AI methodologies, clinicians can enhance their ability to analyze data, prioritize treatments, and make more accurate diagnoses while preserving the essential human aspect of health care. This framework highlights the importance of combining AI's strengths with clinicians' expertise for more effective and balanced decision-making in clinical practice. This article discusses the importance of the palatine bone in endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery. The study examines the structure of the palatine bone and its relationship with surrounding bones, as well as its role in identifying and exposing vital neurovascular structures. The palatine bone contains complex structures that are closely related to arteries, nerves, and branches, making it a useful landmark for surgeons. The article concludes that the palatine bone has not received much attention in skull base surgery, but it harbors important landmarks for maximizing the surgical corridor and minimizing unnecessary injury to neurovascular structures. To assess the usefulness of case reports as sources for research on diagnostic errors in uncommon diseases and atypical presentations. We reviewed 563 case reports of diagnostic error. The commonality of the final diagnoses was classified based on the description in the articles, Orphanet, or epidemiological data on available references; the typicality of presentation was classified based on the description in the articles and the judgment of the physician researchers. Diagnosis Error Evaluation and Research (DEER), Reliable Diagnosis Challenges (RDC), and Generic Diagnostic Pitfalls (GDP) taxonomies were used to assess the factors contributing to diagnostic errors. Excluding three cases in that commonality could not be classified, 560 cases were classified into four categories: typical presentations of common diseases (60, 10.7 %), atypical presentations of common diseases (35, 6.2 %), typical presentations of uncommon diseases (276, 49.3 %), and atypical presentations of uncommon diseases (189, 33.8 %). The most important DEER taxonomy was "Failure/delay in considering the diagnosis" among the four categories, whereas the most important RDC and GDP taxonomies varied with the categories. Abstract Background Epidemiological studies have suggested that suspended particulate matter (SPM) causes detrimental health effects such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and that diesel exhaust particles from automobiles is a major contributor to SPM. It has been reported that neonatal and adult exposure to diesel exhaust damages the central nervous system (CNS) and induces behavioral alteration. Recently, we have focused on the effects of prenatal exposure to diesel exhaust on the CNS. In this study, we examined the effects of prenatal exposure to low concentration of diesel exhaust on behaviour and the monoaminergic neuron system. Spontaneous locomotor activity (SLA) and monoamine levels in the CNS were assessed. Methods Mice were exposed prenatally to a low concentration of diesel exhaust (171 μg DEP/m3) for 8 hours/day on gestational days 2-16. SLA was assessed for 3 days in 4-week-old mice by analysis of the release of temperature-associated infrared rays. At 5 weeks of age, the mice were sacrificed and the brains were used for analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results and Discussion Mice exposed to a low concentration of diesel exhaust showed decreased SLA in the first 60 minutes of exposure. Over the entire test period, the mice exposed prenatally to diesel exhaust showed decreased daily SLA compared to that in control mice, and the SLA in each 3 hour period was decreased when the lights were turned on. Neurotransmitter levels, including dopamine and noradrenaline, were increased in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in the exposure group compared to the control group. The metabolites of dopamine and noradrenaline also increased in the PFC. Neurotransmitter turnover, an index of neuronal activity, of dopamine and noradrenaline was decreased in various regions of the CNS, including the striatum, in the exposure group. The serum corticosterone level was not different between groups. The data suggest that decreased SLA in mice exposed prenatally to diesel exhaust is due to facilitated release of dopamine in the PFC. Conclusions These results indicate that exposure of mice in utero to a low concentration of diesel exhaust decreases SLA and alters the neurochemical monoamine metabolism of several regions of the brain.

A 23-year-old male presented with a 3-month history of left purulent rhinorrhea, progressive nasal obstruction, and intermittent epistaxis. A fiberoptic examination revealed a large vascular polypoid mass completely filling the left nasal cavity. CT and MRI scans showed a large hypervascular mass involving the left nasal airway, maxillary antrum, and the anterior ethmoid cells. There was no bony erosion or contiguous spread, and the remaining sinuses, orbit, and cranial fossa were uninvolved. The patient underwent complete removal of the mass via an external lateral rhinotomy approach. The soft mass was large and vascular. A microscopic analysis revealed an undifferentiated tumor consisting of a solid sheet of small, round blue cells. Mitotic figures were also present. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were strongly positive for CD99. Molecular studies using a PCR confirmed the chromosomal translocation of FLI1 (exon 6). These findings were considered diagnostic for Ewing's sarcoma. Postoperatively, the patient was treated with combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Adjuvant chemotherapy consisting of vincristine, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide alternating with ifosfamide and etoposide (total: 7 cycles) was commenced. We review the recent results of the nucleosynthesis yields of massive stars. We examine how those yields are affected by some hydrodynamical effects during the supernova explosions, namely, explosion energies from those of hypernovae to faint supernovae, mixing and fallback of processed materials, asphericity, etc. Those parameters in the supernova nucleosynthesis models are constrained from observational data of supernovae and metal-poor stars. The elemental abundance patterns observed in extremely metal-poor stars show some peculiarities relative to the solar abundance pattern, which suggests the important contributions of hypernovae and faint supernovae in the early chemical enrichment of galaxies. We calculate evolution, collapse, explosion, and nucleosynthesis of Population III very massive stars with 500 M⊙ and 1000 M⊙. It was found that both 500 M⊙ and 1000 M⊙ models enter the region of pair-instability but continue to undergo core collapse to black holes. For moderately aspherical explosions, the patterns of nucleosynthesis match the observational data of intergalactic and intercluster medium and hot gases in M82, better than models involving hypernovae and pair instability supernovae.Our results suggest that explosions of Population III core-collapse very massive stars contribute significantly to the chemical evolution of gases in clusters of galaxies. The final black hole masses are about 500 M⊙ for our most massive 1000 M⊙ models. This result may support the view that Population III very massive stars are responsible for the origin of intermediate mass black holes which were recently reported to be discovered. Abstract: Two cDNAs similar to mammalian valosine-containing proteins (VCPs) were isolated from the common lumbricid earthworm Eisenia fetida (Savigny, 1826). The primary sequences, referred to as eVCP-1 and eVCP-2, display a similarity of 74%. Despite of the variable C-termini, both eVCPs have a conserved intron/exon organization spanning 14 kb, which is also conserved to their mammalian counterparts. Although this finding strongly suggests VCPs have a common ancestral origin, phylogenetic analysis predicts that eVCP-2 may be distinct. An investigation by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) revealed that, whilst evcp-1 was ubiquitously expressed during all developmental stages, evcp-2 was specifically expressed in the anterior segments of sexually mature earthworms. In situ hybridization clearly demonstrated that evcp-2 is expressed in the seminal vesicles, the location of spermatogenesis, and more precisely within the cytophores surrounded by secondary spermatocytes or spermatids. Abstract: We applied the geminal bond participation theory to Alder ene reactions. The interaction between the σ-orbital at the Z-position of the double bond of propene and the π∗-orbital of ethylene was predicted to be bonding, while that at the E-position should be antibonding. This prediction was confirmed by the bond model analysis of the model compound. These results suggest that the reactivity could be enhanced by substituting a more electron-donating σ-bond at the Z-position. To examine our prediction, theoretical calculations were performed for the systematically substituted substrates. The prediction was confirmed except in the case where the inductive effect of oxygen could affect the reactivity. The same trend in reactivity was observed for formaldehyde as an enophile. Recently the evidence of the neutrinoless double β (0νββ) decay has been announced. This means that neutrinos are Majorana particles and their mass hierarchy is forced to certain patterns in the diagonal basis of charged lepton mass matrix. We estimate the magnitude of 0νββ decay in the classification of the neutrino mass hierarchy patterns as Type A, m[sub 1,2] « m[sub 3], Type B, m[sub 1] ∼ m[sub 2] » m[sub 3], and Type C, m[sub 1] ∼ m[sub 2] ∼ m[sub 3], where m[sub i] is the ith generation neutrino absolute mass. The data of 0νββ decay experiment suggest that the neutrino mass hierarchy pattern should be Type B or C. Type B predicts a small magnitude of 0νββ decay which is just edge of the allowed region of experimental value in 95% c.l., where Majorana CP phases should be in a certain parameter region. Type C can induce the suitably large amount of 0νββ decay which is consistent with the experimental data, where overall scale of degenerate neutrino mass plays a crucial role, and its large value can induce the large 0νββ decay in any parameter regions of Majorana CP phases. It is important to measure U[sub e3] in the lepton flavor mixing matrix in order to understand the structure of Majorana neutrino mass matrix. Recently it is conjectured that the measurement of U[sub e3] would discriminate one solution among various solar neutrino ones provided that the three mass eigenvalues of neutrinos have the relation m[sub 1]≪m[sub 2]≪m[sub 3] or m[sub 1]∼m[sub 2]≪m[sub 3]. In this letter we show that this conjecture is rather restrictive and the relation [formula] is derived by a nontrivial assumption and U[sub e3] cannot discriminate among solar neutrino oscillation solutions without the information on another physical parameter. • The male WT mice had better auditory performance than female WT mice. • The auditory performance was similar between male and female STAT1 knock-out (KO) mice, which was intermediate to WT males and WT females. • Both male and female STAT1 KO mice are suitable for use in auditory behavioral studies. The STAT1 knock-out (KO) mouse is a frequently used transgenic immunodeficient strain to model human viral and bacterial diseases. The Lassa fever model was established in the STAT1 KO mice mimicking phenotypes seen in human patients including deafness in survivors. This model develops hearing loss at high prevalence and is a valuable tool to investigate viral infection-induced hearing loss. However, Lassa virus is a highly contagious and regulated agent requiring the unique logistics of the biosafety level 4 posing limitations for experimental work. Therefore, we did a detailed auditory analysis of the STAT1 KO mice to assess baseline auditory function in preparation for further auditory behavioral studies. Auditory brainstem response and distortion product otoacoustic emission tests were performed on males and females of the STAT1 KO mice and was compared to 129S6/SvEv wild type (WT) mice. The male WT mice had the best auditory performance and the female WT mice had the worst hearing performance. The male and female STAT1 KO mice had similar auditory performance to each other, which was intermediate between WT males and females. Abstract: A series of m-carborane derivatives was prepared based upon the structures of antiestrogenic drugs and their activities were evaluated by estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) binding assay and transactivation assay using human breast cancer cell line, MCF-7 cells. The m-carborane bisphenol 5 exhibited about a thousand times more potent ER agonistic activity than the o-carborane bisphenol 11. The m-carborane bisphenol structure appears to be a favorable hydrophobic pharmacophore for the development of novel selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
