14. 'Social Science Teacher? Anyone Can Become': Examining Professional Subject Identity of Social Science Teachers in India

Abstract

Teacher identity can serve as an important lens to examine the way teachers traverse the various demands made of them by policymakers and stakeholders in the school system, with their own perspectives of self and their work. Official narratives and curriculum documents lead to the construction of a public identity and what it means to be a 'good teacher' in a broad and generic sense. However, much less attention is paid to teachers' biographical accounts of their professional identity, from a stance as practitioners of a specific subject, and their lived experiences, thereof. This article reports on a qualitative study undertaken as a pilot project for a doctoral dissertation, where six social science teachers from Mumbai and Bangalore, participated in three online focus group discussions. The framework used to analyse the data is Goffman's dramaturgical theory of impression management. Findings reveal that social science teachers present their professional identity using reified expressions of competence, idealise social science as a subject, and seek validation of their status as teachers of a nonutility subject. These are discussed in the context of recently proposed educational reforms in India, with the recommendation that policymakers must take cognizance of this fragile sense of subject identity and an acute sense of disempowerment facing social science teachers, who are not averse to accountability measures per se, to enhance their standing.

Abstract

The interactions between the Magellanic Clouds significantly affect the shape and distribution of the young stellar population, particularly in the periphery of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We present the first far-UV (FUV) map of the north-east SMC-Shell region using the Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat. The detected FUV stars are combined with Gaia Early Data Release 3 data to create a FUV-optical catalog of ~ 14,400 stars. FUV-optical colour-magnitude diagrams are used along with isochrones to estimate the stellar ages. The detected stars are formed in multiple episodes. We identified two episodes of star formation (~ 60 and ~ 260 Myr ago) where the episode at ~ 260 Myr is linked to the recent interaction with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the episode at ~ 60 Myr is linked to the pericentric passage of the SMC around our Galaxy. The median proper motion (PM) and velocity dispersion are found to be similar to the SMC main body, indicating that this region has not experienced significant tidal effects. The FUV stellar surface density and the dispersion in PM suggest an extent of the inner SMC in the north-east direction to be around 2.2 deg. We detect arm-like and arc-like structures in the FUV stellar density map, and their kinematics appear to be similar to the SMC main body. 28. BRIDGES: Real World Data, Assignments and Visualizations to Engage and Motivate CS Majors

Abstract

BRIDGES is a software framework for creating engaging assignments for required courses such as data structures and algorithms. It provides students with a simplified API that populates their own data structure implementations with live and real-world data, and provides the ability for students to easily visualize the data structures they create as part of routine classroom exercises. The objective is to use the infrastructure to promote a better understanding of the data structure and its underlying algorithms. This report describes the BRIDGES infrastructure and provides evaluation data collected over the first five years of the project. In the first 2 years, as we were developing the BRIDGES projects, our focus was on gathering data to assess whether the addition of the BRIDGES exercises had an effect on student retention of core concepts in data structures; and throughout the 5-year duration of the project, student interest and faculty feedback were collected online and anonymously. A mixed method design was used to evaluate the project impact. A quasiexperimental design compared student cohorts who were enrolled in comparable course sections that used BRIDGES with those that did not. Qualitative and quantitative measures were developed and used together with course grades and grade point averages. Interest and relevance in BRIDGES programming assignments was assessed with additional survey data from students and instructors. Results showed that students involved in BRIDGES projects demonstrated larger gains in knowledge of data structures compared to students enrolled in comparable course sections, as well as long-term benefits in their performance in four follow-on required courses. Survey responses indicated that some investment of time was needed to use BRIDGES, but the extra efforts were associated with several notable outcomes. Students and instructors had positive perceptions of the value of engaging in BRIDGES projects. BRIDGES can become a tool to get students more engaged in critical foundational courses, demonstrating relevance and context to today's computational challenges.

Abstract

We explore the redshift evolution of the radio luminosity function (RLF) of star-forming galaxies using GALFORM, a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation and a dynamo model of the magnetic field evolving in a galaxy. Assuming energy equipartition between the magnetic field and cosmic rays, we derive the synchrotron luminosity of each sample galaxy. In a model where the turbulent speed is correlated with the star formation rate, the RLF is in fair agreement with observations in the redshift range $0 \leq z \leq 2$. At larger redshifts, the structure of galaxies, their interstellar matter and turbulence appear to be rather different from those at $z\lesssim2$, so that the turbulence and magnetic field models applicable at low redshifts become inadequate. The strong redshift evolution of the RLF at $0 \leq z \leq 2$ can be attributed to an increased number, at high redshift, of galaxies with large disc volumes and strong magnetic fields. On the other hand, in models where the turbulent speed is a constant or an explicit function of $z$, the observed redshift evolution of the RLF is poorly captured. The evolution of the interstellar turbulence and outflow parameters appear to be major (but not the only) drivers of the RLF changes. We find that both the small- and large-scale magnetic fields contribute to the RLF but the small-scale field dominates at high redshifts. Polarisation observations will therefore be important to distinguish these two components and understand better the evolution of galaxies and their nonthermal constituents., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

We present a detailed view of cluster formation (CF) to trace the evolution and interaction history of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) in the last 3.5 Gyr. Using the \textit{Gaia} DR3 data, we parameterized 1710 and 280 star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), where 847 and 113 clusters are newly characterized in the outer LMC and SMC, respectively. We estimated the age-extinction-metallicity-distance parameters using an automated fitting of the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) after field star removal, followed by an MCMC technique. We report a first-time detection of two synchronized CF peaks in the MCs at 1.5$\pm$0.12 Gyr and 800$\pm$60 Myr. We recommend that the choice of the metallicity ($Z$) values of isochrones for clusters with age $\le$ 1 - 2 Gyr are Z$_{\text{LMC}}$ = 0.004 - 0.008 and Z$_{\text{SMC}}$ = 0.0016 - 0.004 for the LMC and SMC, respectively. We found evidence for spiral arms in the LMC, as traced by the cluster count profiles over the last 3.5 Gyr. The density maps provide evidence of ram-pressure stripping in the North-East of the LMC, a severe truncation of CF in the South of the LMC, and a radial shrinkage of CF in the SMC in the last 450 Myr. The last SMC-LMC interaction ($\sim$ 150 Myr) resulted in a substantial CF in the North and Eastern SMC, with a marginal impact on the LMC.
