The purpose of this paper is to provide a method for assessing the impact of direct and indirect flexibilities on the self-consumption of office buildings. The goal is to assess how both the human actors and technical interventions can affect or mitigate deviations in the self-consumption level of a building from its optimal. This paper considers the Predis-MHi platform (a living lab) as a representative case study and applies a Mixed Integer Linear Programming optimization to manage both the direct (stationary battery charging) and indirect flexibilities (Electric Vehicle charging when users plug and unplug their vehicles). Our results indicate that the potential for a building’s self-consumption improvement using indirect flexibilities does exist and can be quantified. However, this type of flexibility is highly dependent on human actors which presents a high level of uncertainty and is difficult to account for in all stages of a building’s development and use. Direct flexibilities such as stationary battery storage can be used to mitigate the undesired effects of having significant levels of indirect flexibilities on a tertiary sector building’s energy performance. The results from this study could potentially be modeled into an indicator, which would serve to influence occupant behavior towards a desired optimal.

Fault diagnosis and maintenance of a whole-building system is a complex task to perform. A wide range of available building fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) tools are only capable of performing fault detection using behavioral constraints analysis. However, the validity of the detected symptom is always questionable. In this work, we introduce the concept of the contextual test with validity constraints, in the context of building fault diagnostics. Thanks to a common formalization of the proposed heterogeneous tests, rule-, range-, and model-based tests can be combined in the same diagnostic analysis that reduces the whole-building modeling effort. The proposed methodology comprises the minimum diagnostic explanation feature that can significantly improve the knowledge of the building facility manager. A bridge diagnosis approach is used to describe the multiple fault scenarios. The proposed methodology is validated on an experimental building called the center for studies and design of prototypes (CECP) building located in Angers, France.

Interactive learning plays a key role in extending the occupant behavior implementation toward smart buildings. Efficient feedbacks can be obtained from the end user by involving occupants and increasing their awareness about energy systems. Working in highly energy-efficient buildings can be a great opportunity, but users need to feel empowered. This means making them aware of the building features and allowing them to manage some of the appliances. In this way, disorientation or annoyance is avoided, and people feel more in control. This paper proposes a solution to interact with occupants to estimate the number of occupants. A novel way of supervised learning is analyzed to estimate the occupancy in a room where actual occupancy is interactively requested to occupants when it is the most relevant to limit the number of interactions. Occupancy estimation algorithm relies on machine learning; it uses information gathered from occupants with the measurements collected from common sensors, for instance, motion detection, power consumption, and CO2 concentration. Two different classifiers are investigated for occupancy estimation with interactions: a decision tree C4.5 and a parameterized rule-based classifier. In this paper, the question of when interacting with occupants is investigated. This approach avoids the usage of a camera to determine the actual occupancy. A complete real-time interaction environment has been developed and is used to estimate the occupancy in an office case study. The graphical user interface has been designed to carry out a real-time experiment.

Future renewable energy communities will reshape the paradigm in which we design and control efficient power systems at the district level. In this manner, the focus will be fundamentally shifted towards sustainable related concepts such as self-consumption, self-sufficiency and net energy exchanged with the grid. In this context, the paper presents a novel approach for optimally designing and controlling the photovoltaic plant and energy storage systems for a metro station in order to increase collective self-consumption and self-sufficiency at the district level. The methodology considers a community of several households connected to a subway station and focuses on the interaction between energy sources and consumers. Furthermore, the optimal solution is determined by using a Mixed Integer Linear Programming Approach, and the impact of different configurations on the overall district benefit is investigated by using several simulation scenarios. The work presents a detailed case study to underline the benefits and flexibility offered by the energy storage system in comparison with a scenario involving only a photovoltaic plant.
