This article aims to explore the multiple uses and consequences of different technologies and infrastructures in the context of migrations and how such uses and consequences inhabit and transform migrants’ rights and subjectivities. It reviews relevant literature at the intersection of citizenship, critical migration studies and science and technology studies (STS), focusing in particular on the current debates underway within critical citizenship studies that examine how technologies and infrastructures shape the ability to acts of citizenship. By mobilizing insights from STS, we focus on how these political subjectivities are shaped by certain sociomaterial and epistemic practices. By introducing the notion of material citizenship politics, the article outlines a way to differentiate three different constitutive forms between technologies, infrastructures and citizenship in migrations. Technologies and infrastructures can (1) constrain acts of citizenship in migration and border regimes; (2) constitute contestation and participation over citizenship; or (3) enable and shape alternative acts of citizenship in migration and border regimes. Por todo o mundo, os/as académicos/as tentam entrar na corrida para dar visibilidade e reconhecimento à sua produção científica de forma a construírem carreiras internacionais. Investigadores/as em início de carreira podem sentir-se perdidos/as enquanto são pressionados/as a publicar muito, rápido e em edições de elevado prestígio académico. Como podem estes/as contribuir para o debate internacional da investigação científica enquanto procuram um caminho próprio num mundo das publicações em permanente mudança? Tentando encontrar soluções para este cenário, criámos, no Centro de Estudos Sociais (CES), o Ciclo de Formação Avançada Publicar-Sem-Perecer: Sobreviver ao Turbilhão (PSP). O nosso objetivo foi dotar o público-alvo de ferramentas de investigação, gerando autonomia e aperfeiçoando competências transferíveis. Partindo da descoberta de recursos, técnicas, normas bibliográficas e ferramentas bibliométricas, realçámos a importância da afirmação da identidade do/a investigador/a na comunidade de investigação através da escrita científica, interligando-a com o mundo editorial, dando resposta às necessidades específicas dos/as participantes, identificadas no âmbito da avaliação da 1ª edição do ciclo. Neste âmbito, a estratégia do projeto, que já conta com duas edições (2016/2017 e 2017/2018), e reúne profissionais da Ciência da Informação e Investigadores do CES, foi sustentada pelos princípios das boas práticas conducentes à literacia da informação.

Neste ensaio pretende-se analisar o uso da linguagem visual na fotografia, bem como a sua interação com as legendas e os títulos de notícias sobre a crise de refugiados/as, tal como foi retratada pelos meios de comunicação social em Portugal e na Rússia. Entre os vários tipos de fotografia, a documental – utilizada nas ciências sociais e humanas – é muitas vezes considerada como um mero registo da realidade. No entanto, em conjunto com o texto, a imagem fotográfica colabora na construção de determinadas visões sobre as populações refugiadas e sobre as medidas políticas mais adequadas em relação a estas populações. O seu potencial interpretativo modifica-se com o tempo inserindo-se no contexto cultural das sociedades, sustentado pelas visões predominantes e metáforas familiares naquela sociedade. Ao analisar uma série de notícias publicadas em 2015-2016 na Rússia e em Portugal sobre a viagem de refugiados/as através da Europa, faz-se uma tentativa de identificar as principais tendências simbólicas, bem como as ausências significativas nessa narrativa visual.

Este artigo surge da combinação de duas áreas disciplinares distintas, a Sociologia e a Sociolinguística, designadamente a partir dos interesses particulares dos seus autores. Alimentou a análise um diálogo e uma reflexão conjunta sobre os meios visuais de comunicação em espaços públicos: o olhar crítico da Sociologia sobre a diversidade de inscrições e graffitis registados no espaço envolvente da Universidade de Coimbra e a análise semiótica, no âmbito da Sociolinguística, das suas mensagens. O presente texto começa por fazer um enquadramento histórico do fenómeno social das inscrições no espaço público, com particular destaque para a sua evolução em Portugal e a importância que a Revolução de Abril de 1974 assume nesse contexto para, num segundo momento, destacar alguns argumentos teóricos demarcadamente da área da semiótica. Num último momento, procede-se à análise empírica de uma seleção de imagens fotográficas de inscrições deixadas no espaço envolvente da Universidade de Coimbra. Este exercício analítico, ainda que exploratório, identifica uma polifonia de temas, dicursos e vozes, reveladora de jogos de poder, assente na presença de diferentes agentes e estratégias de comunicação nesse espaço, que se apresenta em constante mutação, num desafio permanente a novas interpretações e significados.

Livro de atas da III Conferência Internacional - Investigação, Práticas e Contextos em Educação, Leiria, 09-10 de maio New migration flows from countries with no historical links with Portugal have transformed the country’s sociolinguistic landscape, creating an impact on the social aspects and ethnoglinguistic identities. The Portuguese state faced a challenge of promoting a quality education for immigrant children within the course on integration. After the initial lack of response to the linguistic diversity in Portugal’s schools, the Portuguese government formulated political guidelines for language-in-education diversity management. Most recent studies about multilingual contexts in education have gradually shifted the focus to teaching as a social practice while considering teachers, educators, caregivers, parents and students as actors of this practice. This change in perspective reinforces the link between practices and discourses that shape them. Drawing on the interview and observational data from a longitudinal linguistic ethnography around the site of an informal school organized by immigrant parents (2004-2012), this paper aims to discuss the ways in which language teaching practices and their interpretation by institutional agents, parents and children reflect the changes in offcial discourses in mainstream educational setings (e.g., PLNM discourses). The main emphasis is placed on identifying the discursive spaces available for other languages in Portuguese mainstream education and on the impact the commonly accepted language ideologies may have on identities of multilingual speakers.

Este artigo parte de um trabalho exploratório que tenta estabelecer um diálogo entre a análise de ações de protesto na área da educação em Portugal, a partir do enquadramento teórico conferido pelas abordagens aos movimentos sociais, e a análise sócio-semiótica das representações de atores e ação coletiva. Esta combinação privilegia o recurso a uma metodologia que assenta no levantamento exaustivo de notícias sobre ações de protesto realizadas em Portugal (2005-2015) em dois jornais de referência de circulação nacional – Público e Jornal de Notícias – em relação às quais se analisam as dimensões cronológica, sociológica e semiótica. Estes relatos assumem-se essenciais para a análise que aqui se empreende, dado que contribuem para a reconstituição cronológica da mobilização coletiva na área da educação, ajudando a identificar os motivos e as lógicas que justificam esse tipo de ação. A abordagem sócio-semiótica aplicada às representações das ações de protesto coligidas tenta realçar os padrões e as configurações discursivas que caraterizam a visão da imprensa sobre os atores sociais, as causas e as mensagens dos protestos. This article is based on an exploratory work aiming to establish a dialogue between the analysis of protest events in education in Portugal from the theoretical framework within the social movements’ approaches, and the socio-semiotic analysis of the representations of actors and collective action within the protests. The combined method is based on the comprehensive overview of news stories about protests in Portugal (2005-2015), published in two nation-wide newspapers, Público and Jornal de Notícias, thus making it possible to focus on the chronological, sociological and semiotic dimensions of the protests. The analysis undertaken in the article makes an attempt to inform the reconstitution of collective movements in education across the decade, helping to identify the reasons and the rationale behind the protest action. In its turn, the socio-semiotic approach to the representations of the selected protest actions in the Press seeks to move deeper and highlights the patterns and the discursive configurations of the social actors, causes and messages of protests in Portuguese education.

Learning has been moving out of classrooms into virtual and physical spaces for over a decade now (Naismith, Lonsdale, Vavoula, & Sharples, 2004). It is becoming mobile ‘in space’, i.e. carried across various domains (workplace, home, places of leisure), ‘in time’, as it encompasses different moments of the day, and in terms of ‘learning purpose’, which may be related to work, self-improvement or leisure (Vavoula & Sharples, 2002). In line with the principles of learning in an informal, incidental and mobile way, an open source and geolocalised application for learning foreign languages with a smartphone is being implemented within Key Action 2 of the Erasmus Plus European framework by the project called ILOCALAPP - Incidentally Learning Other Cultures and Languages – (Ceccherelli et al., 2016). ILOCALAPP will result in an app to aid in learning Finnish, Italian, Polish and Portuguese embedded within their respective cultural practices. The target group is mobility students, so the app will be situated in the university city where international students arrive, i.e. the Finnish language content will unfold in Rovaniemi, Italian in Bologna, Polish in Poznań, and Portuguese in Coimbra. The learning content will blend in the students’ everyday contexts, whereby the app would be used incidentally in a game-like manner, thus providing enjoyable learning moments throughout their daily activities in an informal way.
