Abstract

The ALICE High Level Trigger combines and processes the full information from all major detectors in a large computer cluster. Data rate reduction is achieved by reducing the event rate by selecting interesting events (software trigger) and by reducing the event size by selecting sub-events and by advanced data compression. Reconstruction chains for the barrel detectors and the forward muon spectrometer have been benchmarked. The HLT receives a replica of the raw data via the standard ALICE DDL link into a custom PCI receiver card (HLT-RORC). These boards also provide a FPGA co-processor for data-intensive tasks of pattern recognition. Some of the pattern recognition algorithms (cluster finder, Hough transformation) have been re-designed in VHDL to be executed in the Virtex-4 FPGA on the HLT-RORC. HLT prototypes were operated during the beam tests of the TPC and TRD detectors. The input and output interfaces to DAQ and the data flow inside of HLT were successfully tested. A full-scale prototype of the dimuon-HLT achieved the expected data flow performance. This system was finally embedded in a GRID-like system of several distributed clusters demonstrating the scalability and fault-tolerance of the HLT. Abstract

The ALICE high level trigger has to process data online, in order to select interesting (sub)events, or to compress data efficiently by modeling techniques. Focusing on the main data source, the time projection chamber (TPC), we present two pattern recognition methods under investigation: a sequential approach (cluster finder and track follower) and an iterative approach (track candidate finder and cluster deconvoluter). We show, that the former is suited for pp and low multiplicity PbPb collisions, whereas the latter might be applicable for high multiplicity PbPb collisions of dN/dy > 3000. Based on the developed tracking schemes we show that using modeling techniques, a compression factor of around 10 might be achievable. Abstract

A prototype DAQ system for the ALICE/PHOS beam test and commissioning program is presented. The system has been taking data since August '97, and represents one of the first applications of .the Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI) as interconnect technology for an operational DAQ system. The front-end VMEbus address space is mapped directly from the DAQ computer memory space through SCI via PCI-SCI bridges. The DAQ computer is a commodity PC running.the Linux operating system. The results of measurements of data transfer rate and latency for the PCI-SCI bridges in a PC-VMEbus SCI-configuration are presented. An optical SCI link based on the Motorola Optobus I data link is described.

Abstract

The DELPHI STIC detector is a lead-scintillator sampling calorimeter with wave length shifting optical fibers used for light collection. The main goal of the calorimeter at LEP100 is to measure the luminosity with an accuracy better than 0.1%. The detector has been in operation since the 1994 LEP run. Presented here is the performance measured during the 1994-1995 LEP runs, with the emphasis on the achieved energy and space resolution, the long-term stability and the efficiency of the detector. The new bunch-trains mode of LEP requires a rather sophisticated trigger and timing scheme which is also presented. To control the trigger efficiency and stability of the calorimeter channels, a LED-based monitoring system has been developed.

The development of a simulator - ALSIM for the ALICE Data Acquisition System is described. ALSIM models front-end data readout, event building, data reduction and data storage. Technology dependent implementations can be linked in and various topologies can be defined dynamically by means of description files. The simulation environment will be described as well as details of the model.

Abstract

Using the generic model of the Second Level Trigger (T2) in the ATLAS Trigger and Data Acquisition System, specific interconnect technologies such as the Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI) can be included in the model to study their behavior with realistic ATLAS data patterns. Simulation results for an SCI-based T2 implementation are presented as well as some details of the modelling work.

Abstract

The Small angle TIle Calorimeter (STIC) provides calorimetric coverage in the very forward region for the DELPHI experiment at the CERN LEP collider. A veto system composed of two scintillator layers allows to trigger on single photon events and provides e - [Gamma] separation. We present here some results of extensive measurements performed on part of the calorimeter and the veto system in the CERN test beams prior to installation and report on the performance achieved during the 1994 LEP run.

Abstract

The structure of the calorimeters built with the 'Shashlik' technique [1] allows the insertion of tracking detectors within the sampling structure, in order to improve the accuracy in the determination of the showering particle direction and to enhance the e-[Pi] separation ability. The new luminosity monitor of the DELPHI detector at LEP was equipped with two planes of silicon pad detectors placed at a depth of 4 and 7.4 radiation lengths. A description of the silicon detectors is given, together with the results from the exposure to a test beam.

Abstract

The research project RD24 [11] is studying applications of the Scalable Coherent Interface (IEEE-1596) standard for the large hadron collider (LHC). First SCI node chips from Dolphin were used to demonstrate the use and functioning of SCI's packet protocols and to measure data rates. We present results from a first, two-node SCI ringlet at CERN, based on a R3000 RISC processor node and DMA node on a MC68040 processor bus. A diagnostic link analyzer monitors the SCI packet protocols up to full link bandwidth. In its second phase, RD24 will build a first implementation of a multi-ringlet SCI data merger.
