This paper explores the new potential strategy of using fine recycled aggregates (fRA) derived from waste 3D printed concrete (3DPC) as a substitute for cement in additive manufacturing. This study hypothesizes that fRA can optimize mixture design, reduce cement content, and contribute to sustainable construction practices. Experimental programs were conducted to evaluate the fresh and hardened properties, printability window, and buildability of 3DPC mixes containing fRA. Mixes with replacement rates of cement with fRA by 10 vol%, 20 vol%, 30 vol%, 40 vol%, and 50 vol% were produced. A comprehensive experimental protocol consisting of rheological studies (static and dynamic yield stress), dynamic elastic modulus determination (first 24 h of hydration), flexural and compressive strengths (2 d and 28 d), and an open porosity test was performed. The obtained results were verified by printing tests. In addition, an economic and environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of the mixes was performed. The results indicate that up to 50 vol% cement replacement with fRA is feasible, albeit with some technical drawbacks. While fRA incorporation enhances sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions and material costs, it adversely affects the printability window, green strength, setting time, and mechanical properties, particularly in the initial curing stages. Therefore, with higher replacement rates (above 20 vol%), potential optimization efforts are needed to mitigate drawbacks such as reduced green strength and buildability. Notably, replacement rates of up to 20 vol% can be successfully used without compromising the overall material properties or altering the mixture design. The LCA analysis shows that reducing the cement content and increasing the fRA addition results in a significant reduction in mix cost (up to 24%) and a substantial decrease in equivalent CO2 emissions (up to 48%). This study presents a new approach towards the production of sol-gel silica-coated Bi2O3/Gd2O3 cement additives towards the improvement of early mechanical performance and radiation attenuation. Two types of silica coatings, which varied in synthesis method and morphology, were used to coat Bi2O3/Gd2O3 structures and evaluated as a cement filler in Portland cement pastes. Isothermal calorimetry studies and early strength evaluations confirmed that both proposed coating types can overcome retarded cement hydration process, attributed to Bi2O3 presence, resulting in improved one day compressive strength by 300% and 251% (depending on coating method) when compared to paste containing pristine Bi2O3 and Gd2O3 particles. Moreover, depending on the type of chosen coating type, various rheological performances of cement pastes can be achieved. Thanks to the proposed combination of materials, both gamma-rays and slow neutron attenuation in cement pastes can be simultaneously improved. The introduction of silica coating resulted in an increment of the gamma-ray and neutron shielding thanks to the increased probability of radiation interaction. Along with the positive early age effects of the synthesized structures, the 28 day mechanical performance of cement pastes was not suppressed, and was found to be comparable to that of the control specimen. Incorporating metal oxide nanoparticles into cement-based composites delays the hydration process and strength gain of cementitious composites. This study presents an approach toward improving the performance of bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) and gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) particles in cementitious systems by synthesizing core–shell structures via a sol-gel process. Two types of silica coatings on cementitious pastes with 5% and 10% substitution levels were proposed. The rheology, hydration, and mechanical properties of the pastes were analyzed to determine the relationship between the coating type and nanoparticle concentration. The results indicate that despite the significant disparities in the performance of the resulting material, both methods are appropriate for cement technology applications. Bi2O3's silica coatings accelerate the hydration process, leading to early strength development in the cement paste. However, due to the coarse particle size of Gd2O3, silica coatings exhibited negligible effects on the early age characteristics of cement pastes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work examines the influence of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) on neutron and gamma-ray radiation shielding characteristics of Portland cement paste. Experimental evaluations were supplemented with theoretical studies using NXCom program. Portland cement pastes with 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 wt% of nanomagnetite cement replacement were produced. Moreover, rheological, early strength development, compressive strength, and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests were performed. The results showed that increasing the amount of Fe3O4 NPs in a mix leads to a gradual increment in measured viscosity and yield stress. High nano-Fe3O4 content substantially impeded the early strength development process and led to a decrement in the 7- and 28-day compressive strength of cement paste. The MIP studies exhibited a gradual increment in total porosity, and average pore volume, as nano-Fe3O4 content was increased. All the macroscopic cross-sections of slow, fast and thermal neutrons constantly increased as a result of the addition of magnetite nanoparticles, with their variations being markedly linear. Similarly, gamma attenuation test results indicated that the addition of Fe3O4 powder enhances the shielding capability of paste in the energy range of interest (0.08–2.614 MeV). In conclusion, Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be successfully used in producing lead-free cementitious composites with improved gamma-ray and neutron shielding properties. Additive manufacturing (AM), also referred as 3D printing, is a technology that enables building automated three-dimensional objects in a layer-by-layer manner. AM of cement-based and alkali-activated composites has gathered attention over the last decade and is one of the most rapidly developing civil engineering fields. Development of proper mixture compositions which are suitable in fresh and hardened state is one of the key challenges of AM technology in construction. As the behaviour of cement-based materials (CBM) and alkali-activated materials (AAM) is determined by chemical and physical processes at the nano-level, incorporation of nano- and micro-sized admixtures has great influence on the performance of printable composites. These modifications are attributed to the unique reactivity of nanoparticles associated with their small size and large surface area. This review paper summarizes recent developments in the application of nano- and micro-particles on 3D printable cementitious composites and how they influence the performance of 3D-printed construction materials. The research progress on nano-engineered CBM and AAM is reviewed from the view of fresh and hardened properties. Moreover, comparison between nano- and micro-sized admixtures including nanosilica, graphene-based materials, and clay nanoparticles as well as chemical admixtures such as viscosity-modifying admixtures and superplasticizers is presented. Finally, the existing problems in current research and future perspectives are summarized. It is shown that high operational reliability of structural materials, in particular at high temperatures, is achieved through the use of ultrahigh strength cement composites. Studies of various types of Portland cements with mineral additives of the CEM II/A type have established that a stone based on Portland cement with superzeolite is the most resistant to high temperatures. It has been proven that due to the "self-autoclaving" effect, the strength of a stone based on CEM II/A-P 42.5 R is 1.2–1.3 times higher than a stone based on other types of CEM II/A. To obtain fast-hardening cement composites, a nanotechnological approach based on the use of sol-gel technology has been implemented. Using the methods of IR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, the fact of obtaining, by the chemical method of synthesis, an alkaline nanomodifier N-C-S-H-PCE, which is a nano–liquid based on nano-core seeds of sodium/calcium hydrosilicates, has been proved. It has been confirmed that the introduction of the alkaline nanomodifier N-C-S-H-PCE provides a significant intensification of the early structure formation processes in the paste based on Portland cement with superzeolite (after 12 hours, 24 hours and 28 days, the strength is 16.9; 30.5 and 104.1 MPa). It has been established that the complex combination of Portland cement with superzeolite, corundum aggregate, basalt fiber and alkaline nanomodifier provides rapid-hardening of ultra-high strength cement composites (T=400 °C) with improved operational properties. Thus, there is reason to assert the feasibility of developing rapidhardening ultra-high strength cementitious composites. This solves the problems associated with the need to increase their early strength and performance. Sewer systems are an integral part of our modern civilization and are an imperative underground infrastructure asset that our society relies on. In Western Europe alone, 92% of the resident pollution is connected to sewer systems. This extensive coverage of sewerage systems presents an ideal habitation for microorganisms to strive. Sewers can be considered continuous flow bioreactors. They are always colonized by bacteria, either in a planktonic state traveling along the pipe with the water flow or dragged in sediment, or organized as biofilms. Many studies have been devoted to the detrimental effects of microorganisms on sewer systems made of concrete. However, their metabolic activity can also be beneficial, lead to more effective wastewater treatment, or be beneficial for concrete pipes. This aspect has not been thoroughly studied to date and requires further investigation. Therefore, in this Review, we highlighted the positive and negative activity of biofilms and their participation in five proposed mass exchange points in gravity sewers. Furthermore, we systematized and reviewed state of the art regarding methods that could be potentially used to remove or engineer these biological structures to increase the sustainability of sewers and achieve a better pre-treatment of wastewater. Civil engineering is characterised by high volatility with respect to working conditions, which are the source of many threats to worker life and health and contribute to high accident rates. The purpose of this paper is to analyse and evaluate the phenomenon of accidents in Polish civil engineering and define the direction of changes that should occur in the safety area. The studies included in this research covered the years 2004-2018. The following indicators were used to assess the accident rates: (1) The total number of persons injured in workplace accidents and this total divided into fatal, severe, and minor accidents; (2) indicators of frequency of accidents in total and this total divided into minor, severe, and fatal accidents; (3) and an indicator of the severity of accidents. From the analysis of statistical data for the years 200-2018, the changes in accident rate parameters demonstrate the continuous improvement of workplace safety in the Polish civil engineering sector. From the analysed data from the 15 years, a clear decrease in the value of the applied indicators is apparent, including both the number of people involved in accidents and the frequency and severity of accidents. Featured Application: This work can be useful in the development of stable ultra-lightweight foamed concrete mixtures with improved mechanical strength and decreased drying shrinkage and without deterioration in thermal insulation properties. Increasing interest is nowadays being paid to improving the thermal insulation of buildings in order to save energy and reduce ecological problems. Foamed concrete has unique characteristics and considerable potential as a promising material in construction applications. It is produced with a wide range of dry densities, between 600 and 1600 kg/m3. However, at a low density below 500 kg/m3, it tends to be unstable in its fresh state while exhibiting high drying shrinkage in its hardened state. In this study, lightweight aggregate-foamed concrete mixtures were prepared by the addition of preformed foam to a cement paste and aggregate. The focus of the research is the influence of fly ash, as well as fine lightweight aggregate addition, on the properties of foamed concrete with a density lower than 500 kg/m3. Concrete properties, including stability and consistency in the fresh state as well as thermal conductivity and mechanical properties in the hardened state, were evaluated in this study. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the microstructure of the foamed concrete. Several mixes with the same density were prepared and tested. The experimental results showed that under the same bulk density, incorporation of fine lightweight aggregate has a significant role on compressive strength development, depending on the characteristics of the lightweight aggregate. However, thermal conductivity is primarily related to the dry density of foamed concrete and only secondarily related to the aggregate content. In addition, the use of fine lightweight aggregate significantly reduces the drying shrinkage of foamed concrete. The results achieved in this work indicate the important role of lightweight aggregate on the stability of low-density foamed concrete, in both fresh and hardened states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract This study aims to investigate the effects of carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube-silica core-shell structures, on the behaviour of cement pastes exposed to high temperature (300, 450 and 600 ° C). Pristine multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were coated with a solid nanosilica (NS) shell, to form a core-shell nanostructure (MWCNT/NS). The cement pastes were incorporated with three different nanomaterial contents equal to 0.125, 0.25 and 0.5 wt.-% of cement. The results demonstrate that incorporation of an optimum amount (0.125 wt.-%) of MWCNT/NSs, is much more beneficial than the incorporation of MWCNTs, for improving the properties of unheated and heated cement pastes. Silica shell improves the binding ability between cement matrices and nanotubes, which is reflected in specimens' compressive strength retention, as well as in decreased micro-cracking. However, exceeding the optimum amount of MWCNTs and MWCNT/NSs can lead to an agglomeration of nanomaterial, thus decreasing the thermal resistance of cement pastes. Exposure to elevated temperatures has detrimental effects on the properties of cementitious composites, leading to irreversible changes, up to total failure. Various methods have been used to suppress the deterioration of concrete under elevated temperature conditions. Recently, nanomaterials have been introduced as admixtures, which decrease the thermal degradation of cement-based composites after exposure to high temperatures. This paper presents a comprehensive review of recent developments related to the effects of nanoparticles on the thermal resistance of cementitious composites. The review provides an updated report on the effects of temperature on the properties of cement-based composites, as well as a detailed analysis of the available literature regarding the inclusion of nanomaterials and their effects on the thermal degradation of cementitious composites. The data from the studies reviewed indicate that the inclusion of nanoparticles in composites protects from strength loss, as well as contributing to a decrease in disruptive cracking, after thermal exposure. From all the nanomaterials presented, nanosilica has been studied the most extensively. However, there are other nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, nanoclays, nanoalumina or nano-iron oxides, that can be used to produce heat-resistant cementitious composites. Based on the data available, it can be concluded that the effects of nanomaterials have not been fully explored and that further investigations are required, so as to successfully utilize them in the production of heat-resistant cementitious composites. Recently, the recycling ofwaste glass has become aworldwide issue in the reduction ofwaste and energy consumption.Waste glass can be utilized in construction materials, and understanding its effects on material properties is crucial in developing advanced materials. In this study, recycled crushed and expanded glasses are used as lightweight aggregates for concrete, and their relation to the material characteristics and properties is investigated using several approaches. Lightweight concrete specimens containing only crushed and expanded waste glass as fine aggregates are produced, and their pore and structural characteristics are examined using image-based methods, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray computed tomography (CT) and automated image analysis (RapidAir). The thermal properties of the materials are measured using both Hot Disk and ISOMET devices to enhance measurement accuracy. Mechanical properties are also evaluated and the correlation between material characteristics and properties is evaluated. As a control group, a concrete specimen with natural fine sand is prepared, and its characteristics are compared with those of the specimens containing crushed and expanded waste glass aggregates.
