Background: Brain imaging studies may provide etiologic insight into observed links between lung function and dementia and stroke. Objective: We evaluated associations of lung function measures with brain MRI markers of vascular and neurodegenerative disease in the ARIC Neurocognitive Study, as few studies have examined the associations. Methods: Lung function was measured at participants' midlife in 1990–1992 (mean age = 56±5 years) and later-life in 2011–2013 (mean age = 76±5 years), and brain MRI was performed in 2011–2013. Linear regression models were used to examine the associations of lung function with brain and white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volumes, and logistic regression models were used for cerebral infarcts and microbleeds, adjusting for potential confounders. Results: In cross-sectional analysis (i.e., examining later-life lung function and MRI markers, n = 1,223), higher forced-expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) were associated with larger brain and lower WMH volumes [e.g., 8.62 (95% CI:2.54–14.71) cm3 greater total brain volume per one-liter higher FEV1]. No association was seen with microbleeds in the overall sample, but higher FVC was associated with lower odds of microbleeds in never-smokers and higher odds in ever-smokers. In the cross-temporal analysis (i.e., associations with midlife lung function, n = 1,787), higher FVC levels were significantly associated with lower later-life brain volumes. Conclusions: Our results support modest associations of better lung function with less neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular pathology, although findings for microbleeds were unexpected in ever-smokers. Objective Quantitative olfactory assessment has demonstrated clinical utility for the evaluation of a range of neurologic, psychiatric, and sinonasal conditions. Here, we provide age, sex, race, and education-specific normative data for the 12-item Sniffin Sticks Odor Identification Test (SSOIT-12) in older Black and White U.S. adults without preclinical or clinical dementia or sinonasal disease. Method A sample of 2,224 Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study participants aged 66–89 years were included. A normative regression equation was developed using a linear model for the association of age, sex, race, and education with odor identification score. Regression-based normative mean scores and percentiles were generated by age, sex, race, and education groups. Results Participants (mean age = 74 years, 59% women, 20% Black, 48% > high school education) had a mean SSOIT-12 score of 9.8. Age, sex, race, and education were all associated with odor identification performance (all p s < .05). A linear regression model for the predicted SSOIT-12 score was developed for use with an individual's actual SSOIT-12 score in order to calculate the Z -score and corresponding percentile for a specific age, sex, race, and education group. Data are also reported in tabular format. Conclusions Our study provides SSOIT-12 normative data obtained from a large population of White and Black older adults without preclinical or clinical dementia or sinonasal disease living in the USA. These findings can aid clinicians in assessing the degree of olfactory loss, establishing concordance with a person's perception of olfactory difficulties and quantitatively monitoring changes in olfactory performance over time. We examined the associations between lung function and incident dementia and cognitive decline in 12,688 participants in the ARIC Study who provided lung function measurements in 1990–1992. Cognitive tests were administered up to 7 times, and dementia was ascertained through 2019. We used shared parameter models to jointly fit proportional hazard models and linear mixed-effect models to estimate lung-function–associated dementia rate and cognitive change, respectively. Higher forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) were associated with reduced dementia (n  = 2,452 persons developed dementia); hazard ratios per 1-L increase in FEV1 and FVC were 0.79 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.71, 0.89) and 0.81 (95% CI: 0.74, 0.89), respectively. Each 1-L increase in FEV1 and FVC was associated with a 0.08–standard deviation (SD) (95% CI: 0.05, 0.12) and a 0.05-SD (95% CI: 0.02, 0.07) attenuation of 30-year cognitive decline, respectively. A 1% increase in FEV1/FVC ratio was associated with 0.008-SD (95% CI: 0.004, 0.012) less cognitive decline. We observed statistical interaction between FEV1 and FVC, suggesting that cognitive declines depended on values of specific FEV1 and FVC (as compared with FEV1, FVC, or FEV1/FVC ratio models that suggested linear incremental associations). Our findings may have important implications for reducing the burden of cognitive decline that is attributable to environmental exposures and associated lung function impairment. Olfactory function has significant implications for human health, but few risk factors for olfactory decline have been identified. We examined the factors associated with olfactory status and decline over five years in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Neurocognitive Study. A 12-item odor identification test was used to assess olfaction in 6053 participants in 2011–2013 (ARIC visit 5, mean age: 75.6, 41% male, 23% Black race) and in 3235 participants in 2016–2017 (visit 6). We used Poisson regression models to examine cross-sectional associations of a range of potential factors with the total odor identification errors (mean errors: 2.8 ± 2.4) in visit 5 participants. We used mixed-effect Poisson regression to examine associations with olfactory decline between visits 5 and 6. We also examined associations with visit 5 anosmia prevalence (847 cases, 14%) and incident anosmia between the two visits (510 cases, 16%) using Poisson models. Older age, male sex, lower education, Black race, APOE ε4 alleles, and diabetes were associated with higher odor identification errors and higher anosmia prevalence, and greater physical activity and hypertension with better olfaction. Age, male sex, lower education, Black race, APOE ε4 allele, and vitamin B12 levels were associated with incident anosmia over 5 years. Older age was associated with faster olfactory decline. At visit 3 (1993–1995) of the ARIC Study, 1.5T brain MRI was completed in 1,881 stroke-free participants (Mean age = 62.9±4.9, 50% Black). Cox regression examined associations between infarct group [infarct-free (referent; n = 1,611), smaller only (<3 mm; n = 50), larger only (≥3 mm but <20 mm; n = 185), both (n = 35)] and up to 25-year incident dementia (n = 539). Participants with both infarcts were over 2.5 times more likely to develop dementia [HR = 2.61; 95% CI = 1.44, 4.72]. Smaller only (HR = 1.22; 95% CI = 0.70, 2.13) and larger only (HR = 1.27; 95% CI = 0.92, 1.74) groups showed associations with wide confidence intervals, unsupported statistically. Objectives: Pyrethroid insecticides have been linked with multiple health outcomes. One study reported an association with increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Given the widespread use of pyrethroids, these findings warrant confirmation. We explored associations of permethrin/pyrethroid use with overall and cause-specific mortality among 50 665 licensed pesticide applicators in the Agricultural Health Study.Methods: At enrolment (1993-1997), participants self-reported information on permethrin/pyrethroid use. Information on causes of death came from linkage with death registries through 2016. We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate HRs and 95% CIs with adjustment for potential confounders.Results: Over an average 21 years of follow-up, 19.6% (9,955) of the cohort died. We found no clear evidence that ever-use of permethrin/pyrethroid was associated with elevated overall mortality or with mortality from most causes examined. There was suggestive evidence, based on a small number of deaths among those exposed, for elevated pyrethroid-associated mortality from some neurological, respiratory and genitourinary diseases in the overall sample and from lung cancer among never-smokers.Conclusion: Although based on mortality, which is also affected by survival, rather than incidence, these findings are biologically plausible, and future investigations in other populations may be warranted. Background: Dream‐enacting behavior is a characteristic feature of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, the most specific prodromal marker of synucleinopathies. Pesticide exposure may be associated with dream‐enacting behaviors, but epidemiological evidence is limited. Objectives: To examine high pesticide exposure events in relation to dream‐enacting behaviors among farmers in the Agricultural Health Study. Methods: We conducted multivariable logistic regression analyses to examine high pesticide exposure events reported from 1993 to 1997 in relation to dream‐enacting behaviors assessed from 2013 to 2015 among 11,248 farmers (age 47 ± 11 years). Results: A history of dream‐enacting behaviors was reported by 939 (8.3%) farmers. Compared with farmers who did not report any high pesticide exposure event, those who reported were more likely to endorse dream‐enacting behaviors 2 decades later (odds ratio = 1.75; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.49–2.05). The association appeared stronger when there was a long delay in washing with soap and water after the event (2.63 [95% CI, 1.62–4.27] for waiting >6 hours vs. 1.71 [95% CI, 1.36–2.15] for washing within 30 minutes) and when the exposure involved the respiratory or digestive tract (2.04 [95% CI, 1.62–2.57] vs. 1.58 [95% CI, 1.29–1.93] for dermal contact only). In the analyses of specific pesticides involved, we found positive associations with two organochlorine insecticides (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and lindane), four organophosphate insecticides (phorate, ethoprop, terbufos, and parathion), two herbicides (alachlor and paraquat), and fungicides as a group. BACKGROUND: Pesticide exposure is associated with many long-term health outcomes; the potential underlying mechanisms are not well established for most associations. Epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation, may contribute. Individual pesticides may be associated with specific DNA methylation patterns but no epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) has evaluated methylation in relation to individual pesticides. OBJECTIVES: We conducted an EWAS of DNA methylation in relation to several pesticide active ingredients. METHODS: The Agricultural Lung Health Study is a case–control study of asthma, nested within the Agricultural Health Study. We analyzed blood DNA methylation measured using Illumina's EPIC array in 1,170 male farmers of European ancestry. For pesticides still on the market at blood collection (2009–2013), we evaluated nine active ingredients for which at least 30 participants reported past and current (within the last 12 months) use, as well as seven banned organochlorines with at least 30 participants reporting past use. We used robust linear regression to compare methylation at individual C-phosphate-G sites (CpGs) among users of a specific pesticide to never users. RESULTS: Using family-wise error rate (푝<9×10-8) or false-discovery rate (FDR<0:05), we identified 162 differentially methylated CpGs across 8 of 9 currently marketed active ingredients (acetochlor, atrazine, dicamba, glyphosate, malathion, metolachlor, mesotrione, and picloram) and one banned organochlorine (heptachlor). Differentially methylated CpGs were unique to each active ingredient, and a dose–response relationship with lifetime days of use was observed for most. Significant CpGs were enriched for transcription motifs and 28% of CpGs were associated with whole blood cis-gene expression, supporting functional effects of findings. We corroborated a previously reported association between dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (banned in the United States in 1972) and epigenetic age acceleration. DISCUSSION: We identified differential methylation for several active ingredients in male farmers of European ancestry. Background: In epidemiologic studies where physician-based case adjudication is not feasible, Parkinson's disease (PD) case ascertainment is often limited to self-reports which may not be accurate. We evaluated strategies to identify PD cases in the Agricultural Health Study (AHS). Methods: Doctor-diagnosed PD was self-reported on all cohort-wide surveys; potential cases were also identified from death certificates. Follow-up surveys asked about PD-related motor and non-motor symptoms. For PD confirmation, we collected additional diagnosis, symptom, and treatment data from 510 potential PD cases or their proxy (65% of those contacted) in a supplemental screener and obtained medical records for a subset (n = 65). We classified PD cases using established criteria and screener data. Results: Of 510 potential PD cases, 75% were considered "probable" or "possible"; this proportion increased among participants diagnosed by a specialist (81.2%), taking PD medication (85.2%), or reporting ≥5 motor symptoms (86.8%) in a regular AHS survey. Of those with medical records, 93% (57 of 61) of probable or possible PD was confirmed. Never-smoking and non-motor and motor symptoms reported in prior AHS surveys were more common with probable/possible PD than unconfirmed PD. Conclusion: In this retrospective PD case ascertainment effort, we found that PD self-report with information on motor symptoms or medications may be a reasonable alternative for identifying PD cases when physician exam is not feasible. Objectives: Pesticide exposure may impair human olfaction, but empirical evidence is limited. We examined associations between occupational use of 50 specific pesticides and olfactory impairment, both self-reported, among 20 409 participants in the Agricultural Health Study, a prospective cohort of pesticide applicators (mostly farmers, 97% male).Methods: We used logistic regression models to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for associations between pesticide use at enrolment (1993-1997) and olfactory impairment reported two decades later (2013-2016), adjusting for baseline covariates.Results: About 10% of participants reported olfactory impairment. The overall cumulative days of any pesticide use at enrolment were associated with a higher odds of reporting olfactory impairment (OR (highest vs lowest quartile): 1.17 (95% CI: 1.02 to 1.34), p-trend = 0.003). In the analyses of 50 specific pesticides, ever-use of 20 pesticides showed modest associations with olfactory impairment, with ORs ranging from 1.11 to 1.33. Of these, higher lifetime days of use of 12 pesticides were associated with higher odds of olfactory impairment compared with never use (p-trend ≤ 0.05), including two organochlorine insecticides (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and lindane), two organophosphate insecticides (diazinon and malathion), permethrin, the fungicide captan and six herbicides (glyphosate, petroleum distillates, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid and metribuzin), although many of these did not exhibit clear, monotonic exposure-response patterns.Conclusion: Overall, we found relatively broad associations between pesticides and olfactory impairment, involving many individual pesticides and covering several chemical classes, suggesting that pesticides could affect olfaction through multiple pathways. BACKGROUND: Olfactory impairment (OI) is common among older adults and independently predicts all-cause mortality and the risk of several major neurodegenerative diseases. Pesticide exposure may impair olfaction, but empirical evidence is lacking. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine high pesticide exposure events (HPEEs) in relation to self-reported OI in participants in the Agricultural Health Study (AHS). METHODS: We conducted multivariable logistic regression to examine the associations between HPEEs reported at enrollment (1993-1997) and self-reported OI at the latest AHS follow-up (2013-2015) among 11,232 farmers, using farmers without HPEEs as the reference or unexposed group. RESULTS: A total of 1,186 (10.6%) farmers reported OI. A history of HPEEs reported at enrollment was associated with a higher likelihood of reporting OI two decades later {odds ratio ðORÞ=1:49 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.28, 1.73]}. In the analyses on the HPEE involving the highest exposure, the association appears to be stronger when there was a >4-h delay between HPEE and washing with soap and water [e.g., OR=2:07 (95% CI: 1.48, 2.89) for 4-6 h vs. OR=1:39 (95% CI: 1.11, 1.75) for <30 min]. Further, significant associations were observed both for HPEEs involving the respiratory or digestive tract [OR=1:53 (95% CI: 1.22, 1.92)] and dermal contact [OR=1:47 (95% CI: 1.22, 1.78)]. Finally, we found significant associations with several specific pesticides involved in the highest exposed HPEEs, including two organochlorine insecticides (DDT and lindane) and four herbicides (alachlor, metolachlor, 2,4-D, and pendimethalin). HPEEs that occurred after enrollment were also associated with OI development. CONCLUSIONS: HPEEs may cause long-lasting olfactory deficit. BACKGROUND: Though evidence suggests that some pesticides may have thyroid-disrupting properties, prospective studies of associations between specific pesticides and incident thyroid disease are limited. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated associations between use of specific pesticides and incident hypothyroidism in private pesticide applicators in the Agricultural Health Study (AHS). METHODS: Self-reported incident hypothyroidism ([Formula: see text] cases) was studied in relation to ever-use and intensity-weighted cumulative days of pesticide use at study enrollment. We estimated adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using Cox proportional hazards models applied to 35,150 male and female applicators followed over 20 y. All models were stratified by state and education to meet proportional hazards assumptions ([Formula: see text] for age x covariate interactions). Models of pesticides that did not meet proportional hazards assumptions were stratified by median attained age (62 y). RESULTS: Hypothyroidism risk was significantly increased with ever- vs. never-use of four organochlorine insecticides (aldrin, heptachlor, and lindane among participants with attained age [Formula: see text]; chlordane in all participants), four organophosphate insecticides (coumaphos in those [Formula: see text]; diazinon, dichlorvos, and malathion in all participants) and three herbicides (dicamba, glyphosate, and 2,4-D in all participants). HRs ranged from 1.21; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.41 (chlordane) to 1.54; 95% CI: 1.23, 19.4 (lindane in those [Formula: see text]). Hypothyroidism risk was greatest among those with higher intensity-weighted lifetime days of using chlordane, lindane, coumaphos (over age 62), diazinon, permethrin, and 2,4-D. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support associations between exposure to several pesticides and increased hypothyroidism risk. Purpose: Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are environmentally persistent amphiphilic compounds. Exposure to two PFASs, perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is linked to specific occupations and industries. This study examines the contribution of past occupational PFAS exposure to serum PFOS and PFOA levels among 154 older adults in New York State.Methods: Serum PFOS and PFOA levels were compared to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Potential occupational exposure to any PFAS was determined from work histories, reviewed by an industrial hygienist, and assessed in relation to current serum PFOS and PFOA levels using exposure probability, duration and cumulative exposure.Results: We observed 25% higher serum PFOS and 80% higher PFOA levels in study participants compared to NHANES. No participants reported PFAS chemical manufacturing work, but n = 68 reported work in occupations and industries known to use PFASs. We found that participants with high cumulative workplace exposure had 34% higher serum PFOS levels compared to participants without occupational exposure, adjusted for age, sex and income. Serum PFOS levels were 26% higher for participants with longer occupational exposure durations. The probability of occupational PFAS exposure metric was not associated with serum PFOS. Serum PFOA was not associated with any measure of occupational exposure.Conclusion: Occupational exposure may contribute to total PFOS body burden in this study population, even among workers not directly involved in manufacturing PFASs. Objectives: Few studies have evaluated the presence of multiple nonmotor symptoms (NMS) in relation to Parkinson disease (PD). Therefore, we examined cross-sectional associations between individual and multiple NMS and PD in the Agricultural Health Study. Methods: 20,473 male farmers and 16,259 female spouses provided information on six NMS (reduced sense of smell, dream-enacting behavior, daytime sleepiness, infrequent bowel movement, depression, and anxiety) in the cohort’s 2013–2015 follow-up survey. 191 men and 68 women reported physician-diagnosed PD. We estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using multivariable logistic regression models separately by sex. Results: NMS were each associated with PD, with the strongest association for reduced sense of smell in men and dream-enacting behavior in women. The number of NMS showed a strong dose-response relationship with PD, particularly in men. ORs were 5.5 (95% CI 3.4–8.8) for one, 17 (95% CI 10.4–28.0) for two, and 53.4 (95% CI 33.2–86.1) for three or more NMS in men; the corresponding ORs were 4.6 (95% CI 2.3–9.5), 6.7 (95% CI 2.9–15.6), and 23.6 (95% CI 10.7–52.4) in women (PNMS-interaction-with-sex = 0.07). Conclusions: The number of NMS was associated with PD in a dose-response manner and the association appeared stronger in men than in women. Background: Low vitamin D levels are common among patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Experimental evidence further suggests that vitamin D may be protective against PD. The objective of this study was to prospectively assess the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and PD among 12,762 participants of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study cohort.Methods: Serum samples were collected in 1990-1992, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D was measured by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. A total of 67 incident PD cases were identified through December 31, 2008. The median length of follow-up was 17 years. We used Cox proportional hazards models to obtain hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals, adjusting for age, sex, and race. We did not find any association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations and PD risk, regardless of how serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D was modeled. Compared with participants with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D < 20 ng/mL, the hazards ratio for PD was 1.05 (95% confidence interval, 0.58-1.90) for 20-30 ng/mL and 1.14 (95% confidence interval, 0.59- 2.23) for ≥30 ng/mL. Similar results were obtained in sensitivity analyses that included white participants only and that were stratified by the length of follow-up.Conclusion: This prospective study lends no support to the hypothesis that vitamin D may reduce the risk of PD. © 2016 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society. Background: Enteric microencapsulation of the potential immunosuppressant TRAM-34 was investigated as a means of enhancing oral drug delivery and minimizing or eliminating hydrolysis of pyrazole-substituted triarylmethane to the respective alcohol. Method: TRAM-34 was successfully enteric microencapsulated by a coacervation method using the pH-sensitive Eudragit L 100 polymer. In this study, we utilized water miscible organic solvents such as acetone and ethanol, which are considered safe class 3 solvents according to the ICH guideline. We deemed such an approach suitable for safe scale up and for enteric coating application to other compounds of a similar lipophilicity. Results: The resulting microparticles were spherical and uniform with an average particle size of 460 μm at 15% theoretical loading. The encapsulation efficiency was 90 ± 1.9% and the percentage yield was found to be 91.5 ± 0.3%. The oral administration in rhesus macaques of TRAM-34-loaded enteric-coated microparticles illustrated six times enhancement in its oral bioavailability. However, the TRAM-34 plasma concentration was less than the therapeutic effective level. Conclusion: The low oral bioavailability, even after enteric coating, could be attributed to the compound's inherent absorption characteristics and high lipophilicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Imaging‐based markers of cerebrovascular disease are associated with adverse health events, including incident dementia. However, only infarcts ≥3mm are typically considered in clinical and research settings. Recent evidence demonstrates that smaller infarcts in individuals during mid‐life, particularly when co‐occurring with larger infarcts, may be clinically relevant to cognitive decline, incident stroke, and stroke mortality. We aimed to determine if there was a similar compounding of risk for incident dementia among those with both smaller and larger infarcts at midlife. Method: The ARIC study is a multi‐site longitudinal cohort study which began in 1987. At visit 3 (1993‐95), brain 1.5T MRI scans were completed in 1881 participants with self‐reported Black/White race and no history of stroke (Mean age=62.9±4.9, 40% Male, 50% Black). Infarcts were identified on T2 and proton density weighted images, with smaller infarcts defined as those <3mm and larger infarcts defined as ≥3mm. All participants were followed prospectively for incident dementia using a combination of medical record surveillance, telephone interviews, in‐person assessments, and expert adjudicated dementia status at three in‐person exams (2011‐2013, 2015‐17, 2018‐19). Cox regression was used to determine the association between infarct group [none(referent), smaller only, larger only, both] and incident dementia adjusted for age, sex, education, site‐race, APOE4, and competing risk of mortality. Result: Among 1881 participants, 539 incident dementia cases were identified over 25 years of follow‐up. 1611 participants were infarct‐free, 50 participants had only smaller infarcts, 185 had only larger infarcts, and 35 participants had both. Compared to those with no infarcts, participants with both smaller and larger infarcts were over 2.5 times more likely to develop dementia [Hazard Ratio(HR)=2.61; 95% Confidence Interval(CI)=1.44, 4.72]. Associations were in similar directions but had wider and indeterminate confidence intervals when comparing the smaller infarcts only (HR=1.22; 95%CI=0.70, 2.13) or larger infarcts only (HR=1.27; 95%CI=0.92, 1.74) to the no infarct group. Of the 35 participants with both smaller and larger infarcts, all but two either died or developed dementia. Conclusion: A midlife infarct burden including both smaller and larger lesions may represent a vulnerability to dementia beyond the risk conferred by either smaller or larger infarcts alone. Circulating magnesium has been associated with a lower risk of dementia, but the physiologic effects by which magnesium may prevent neurological insults remain unclear. We studied 1466 individuals (mean age 76.2 ± 5.3, 28.8% black, 60.1% female) free of prevalent stroke, with measured serum magnesium and with available MRI scans obtained in 2011–2013, participating in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Neurocognitive Study (ARIC-NCS). Cross-sectional differences in frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobe volume, along with deep grey matter, total brain, and white matter hyperintensity volume across serum magnesium (categorized into quintiles and per standard deviation increases) were assessed using multiple linear regression. We also examined associations of magnesium with the prevalence of cortical, subcortical, and lacunar infarcts using multiple logistic regression. After adjusting for demographics, biomarkers, medications, and cardiometabolic risk factors, higher circulating magnesium was associated with greater total brain volume and frontal, temporal, and parietal lobe volumes (volumes 0.14 to 0.19 standard deviations higher comparing Q5 to Q1). Elevated magnesium was also associated with lower odds of subcortical infarcts (OR (95%CI): 0.44 (0.25, 0.77) comparing Q5 to Q1) and lacunar infarcts (OR (95%CI): 0.40 (0.22, 0.71) comparing Q5 to Q1). Elevated serum magnesium was cross-sectionally associated with greater brain volumes and lower odds of subclinical cerebrovascular disease, suggesting beneficial effects on pathways related to neurodegeneration and cerebrovascular damage.
