Attributions for parent-child relationship outcomes were assessed as a function of childhood maltreatment history. In Study 1, the attributions of maltreated children were compared with those of nonmaltreated children from a similar background. Maltreated girls (but not boys) were found to be more likely than nonmaltreated girls to attribute lower power or control to self than to parents. Effects of maltreatment on children's attributions were found for physical but not sexual abuse. In Study 2, the attributions of parents with a history of abuse as children were compared with those of parents who had not been abused. Women (but no men) with a history of abuse attributed less power or control to self than to children. This article presents a qualitative look at the residential treatment center from the child-residents' point of view. The authors draw from interviews with both current and former residents, their parents and staff. Results revealed that while the children did not object to behavioral interventions and therapeutic programming intended to address their emotional, physical and safety needs, they felt their time was overly structured, controlled and monitored. Further, and more instructive, the children seldom saw a connection between the goals that the agency set for them and their own personal goals and aspirations. The large amounts of client behavioral data collected by residential treatment programs represent an information processing challenee. If programs are to make effective use of data, they need processing systems which are flexible and cost-efficient, and which generate results applicable to program information needs. This report describes a computer-based system which utilizes data from daily behavioral observations by staff to produce varying types of statistical results, including behavioral progress charts of individual clicnts, behavioral charts of client groups, and more general research data. This article presents the authors' comments on the review written by professor Phillip Shaver regarding research done by the authors on child social behavior as of January 1984. Shaver's comments revolve around the definitional characteristics of the attributional measures employed by the authors in their research and the relationship between attributions and behavior. The authors' initial interest in attributions as moderators of caregiving interactions focused on locus of control. In their research the authors attempted to extend and refine their measurement of attributions. The extension consisted of a separate assessment of control or power attributed to self and control or power attributed to the child.
