6. Museum Education, Cultural Sustainability, and English Language Teaching in Spain

Abstract

The collaborative action research project presented analysed the potential of museum education to radically transform the way in which English was taught and learnt in three diverse elementary, middle, and high-school contexts in the province of València (Spain). Insights from museum education and New Literacy Studies were used to expand upon the pedagogical affordances of the material and multimodal dimensions of English language teaching, in order to generate more opportunities for student motivation and engagement by connecting with the learners' home and community cultures, identities, languages, and literacies. To assess the impact of the project, a variety of qualitative strategies were used (including classroom recordings, student interviews and questionnaires, and photographs). A model for culturally sustaining pedagogy was suggested, which school and museum educators may use to inform their practice.

Abstract

Remote sensing technology currently facilitates the monitoring of crop development, enabling detailed analysis and monitoring throughout the crop's growing stages. This research analyzed the winter wheat growth dynamics of experimental plots at the Lakehead University Agricultural Research Station, Thunder Bay, Canada using high spatial and temporal resolution remote sensing images. The spectral signatures for five growing stages were prepared. NIR reflectance increased during the growing stages and decreased at the senescence, indicating healthy vegetation. The space–time cube provided valuable insight into how canopy height changed over time. The effect of nitrogen treatments on wheat did not directly influence the plant count (spring/autumn), and height and volume at maturity. However, the green and dry weights were different at several treatments. Winter wheat yield was predicted using the XGBoost algorithm, and moderate results were obtained. The study explored different techniques for analyzing winter wheat growth dynamics and identified their usefulness in smart agriculture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study is the result of the debate sessions held at the 1st International Conference on Human Rights and Territories at the Pablo de Olavide University in Seville, aimed at analyzing the impact and the agenda itself in the territorial and local contexts. To conduct the research, five focus groups were organized, focusing on the five elements of the agenda: People, Peace, Planet, Prosperity, and Partnerships, with the participation of over 30 international academics, followed by an analysis of the recorded speeches. The results provide a critical epistemic perspective on the 2030 Agenda and its connection with territories, concluding the difficulty of establishing human rights processes in territories from agendas that are centered from the global to the local level. Objective: To select the technologies required for a combined assortment plant with probable installation at the Tropical Viand Research Institute (INIVIT), with a semi-mechanized nature and with a low degree of separation of the starch present in the fiber, treating the latter and allocating it to the animal feeding. Materials and Methods: The selection of technological equipment and flow and operation sequences was carried out by combining the individual processes in a semi-mechanized scheme with a multipurpose approach for the production of cassava, flour and native starch. The main peculiarities are given in the common dry crushing, the washing and filtering of the starch in a trommel and its sedimentation in tunnels or tanks, which replaces mechanically complex equipment in the mechanized process of native starch. This sequence causes low level separation of starch into fiber, but dries the starch-rich fiber into additional assortment. Conclusions: The proposal allows having a multipurpose scheme for obtaining combined assortments of cassava by semi-mechanized means that has been used for the rest of the design stages of the process. Abstract

Introduction: The optimal design of technologies for the production of combined assortments, constitutes a profitable alternative for the development of the cultivation of Manihot esculenta Crantz (cassava) and its industrializable products. Objective: To develop the economic optimization for the design of a combined assortment plant of Manihot esculeta Crantz by semi-mechanized way. Materials and Methods: A hybrid semi-mechanized scheme was devised for the combined production of starch, cassava and flour. A second order extreme vertex design (EVD) was generated for the distribution of cassava in the three productions, and the quadratic models obtained for profit (G), net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR) and discounted payback period (DRP) were optimized. For the evaluation of the indicators, the design of the basic equipment and the material and energy balances were developed. Results and Discussion: The multipurpose semi-mechanized technology uses the same initial stages for the three processes and a common pneumatic drying for the starch and flour processes. The optimal operating parameters correspond to a profit of 236 882 USD/year, a NPV of 1 242 730 USD, an IRR of 33.10 % and a DRP of 3.97 years, and are achieved for a distribution of 60 % for starch, 10 % for cassava and 30 % for flour. Conclusions: With the raw material distribution that optimizes economic and profitability indicators, production feasibility is guaranteed with energetic and environmental compatibility. Abstract

Background Burr hole covering in brain surgical procedures can avoid complications and unaesthetic results. The aim of this registry was to assess the safety and performance of a new polymeric burr hole covering device (Cranial COVER, NEOS Surgery). Methods A multicenter, prospective, clinical registry design was used for the study. All the patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included in the study and followed up for 6 months. Baseline clinical parameters, surgical variables (technical success of the implantation, surgeon satisfaction), postoperative variables (aesthetic and functional results, neuroimaging artifacts), and adverse events were evaluated. Results Forty-three Cranial COVER devices were implanted in 30 patients. Most of them were implanted in frontal locations (53.5%). After implantation, 97.7% of the devices completely covered the burr hole, and 100% perfectly adapted to the skull surface. All surgeons ranked their satisfaction with the implantation procedure as very high or high. No artifacts were detected in any of the neuroimaging studies performed and no adverse events related with the device or its implantation were reported during the follow-up. There were significantly more scalp depressions associated with uncovered than with Cranial COVER–covered burr holes (p = 0.040). Patient satisfaction with covered burr holes located in the frontal and parietal areas was 9.0 ± 1.4 over 10. Conclusion Cranial COVER is a safe and reliable burr hole covering system that offers excellent cosmetic results and high satisfaction rates for both surgeons and patients. Abstract

Our aim was to evaluate the immune response of healthcare workers included in the RIPOVAC study, after receiving a booster dose (third dose), in terms of intensity and persistence of induced antibodies. In the second phase of the RIPOVAC study, between December 2021 and January 2022, eight months after the second dose, 389 voluntary, immunocompetent, non-pregnant healthcare workers received a booster dose of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, and a serum sample was obtained. Two groups of patients were established: with and without previous SARS-CoV-2 infection. In order to quantify anti-S1 IgG (AU/mL) we used CMIA (Abbott). All of the health workers were anti-S IgG positive 8 months after receiving the booster dose of the vaccine, with a mean of 17,040 AU/mL. In 53 patients without previous infection, antibody levels increased by a mean of 10,762 AU/mL. This figure is seven times higher than the one produced after the second dose (1506 AU/mL). The booster dose produces a robust elevation of the antibody level, which persists at 8 months, with levels significantly higher than those reached after the second dose, which allow one to predict a persistence of more than one year. Abstract

Background: Newborns in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are in contact with a variety of medical products whose production might include synthetic chemicals with hormonal activity. Objectives: Our aim was to assess the content of bisphenol A (BPA) and parabens (PBs) and the hormone-like activities of a subset of medical products commonly used in NICUs in prolonged intimate contact with NICU newborns. Methods: Fifty-two NICU items were analyzed, determining the concentrations of BPA and PBs [methyl- (MeP), ethyl- (EtP), propyl- (PrP), and butylparaben (BuP)] and using the E-Screen and PALM-luciferase assays to measure the in vitro (anti-)estrogenic and (anti-)androgenic activity, respectively, of the extracts. Items found to have elevated BPA/PB content or hormone-like activities were further extracted using leaching methodologies. Results: BPA was found in three-fifths and PBs in four-fifths of tested NICU items, and ~ 25% and ~ 10% of extracts evidenced estrogenic and anti-androgenic activity, respectively. The highest BPA content was found in the three-way stopcock (>7.000 ng/g), followed by patterned transparent film dressing, gastro-duodenal feeding tubes, sterile gloves, single-lumen umbilical catheters, and intravenous (IV) infusion extension sets (concentrations ranged from 100 to 700ng/g BPA). A total PB concentration [SIGMA] PBs) >100ng/g was observed in several items, including light therapy protection glasses, patterned transparent film dressing, winged IV catheters, IV infusion extension sets, and textile tape. The highest estrogenic activity [>450 [micro]M estradiol equivalent ([E.sub.2]eq)] was found in small dummy nipples, three-way stopcocks, and patterned transparent film dressing and the highest anti-androgenic activity [>5 mM procymidone equivalent units per gram (Proceq/g)] in small dummy nipples and three-way stopcocks. Discussion: According to these findings, neonates might be exposed to multiple sources of BPA and PBs in NICUs via inhalation, dermal, oral, and IV/parenteral routes. Abstract

Remote sensing Vegetation Indices (VIs) are simple, effective, and widely used methods for quantitative and qualitative analysis of vegetation cover, vigor, and growth dynamics. This study developed and assessed a new vegetation index (VI) using Cyan, Orange, and Near Infrared (NIR) bands to assess Soybean growth dynamics. The study was conducted at Lakehead University Agriculture Research Station, Thunder Bay, Canada, over four reproductive stages of Soybean growth (R4–R7). Spectral profiles were created for each stage, and the correlation between each spectral band at different stages was tested. There was no linear correlation between different bands except the correlation between the Cyan and Orange bands at R5 and R6 stages. Existing VIs have also been explored using approximately similar band combinations. Based on this analysis, three VIs were proposed for this new camera, and their behavior at different stages was evaluated using Leaf Area Index (LAI). Cyan and Orange spectral values were relatively high in the first and last growing seasons, while NIR values increased dramatically in the mid-growing seasons and decreased in the last stage. VINIR,O,C index showed the best results for mid-growing seasons (correlation with LAI = 0.39 for R5 and R6). VIC,O index showed a high level of details visually (leaves and background) for R4 and R7 than the other indices and correlated highly with LAI (0.48 and −0.5, respectively). Overall, the study provided new VIs that can be used to effectively analyze Soybean growth dynamics, with different VIs showing reliability over different growing stages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Over the past two decades, a wide array of research has been conducted to elucidate the therapeutic effects of psilocybin on the human body and mind. One of the purposes of this article is to show no exclusive opposition between science and spirituality. For this purpose, it is important to reflect critically on the conceptual frameworks used (psychedelics, hallucinogens, entheogens, neurotropics, among others) but also on the role played by the psychoactive compounds involved in the evolutionary process, in this case, the psilocybin fungi. This research aims to inform, based on a bibliographic analysis, about the role that the fungi Psilocybe spp. have had in the evolution of humankind and to carry out a critical analysis of their cultural uses. One of the specific topics is to examine the role that the ritual and therapeutic uses of psilocybin mushrooms may have played in the development of language. For example, the cultural significance of songs, prayers, and incantations is expressed in the ritual and/or ceremonial use of language, which is seen as a means of contacting ancestors and sacred entities. This research aims to argue that the consumption of psilocybin mushrooms may have contributed to "expanding" the mind of our ancestors by exerting selective pressure on the evolution of human thought. Finally, we will explain some of the therapeutic potential that psilocybin has to treat various mental disorders through rituals, psychotherapies, and psychiatric treatments, among others.
