Heinemann Keywords: Injury typology; Perpetrator-victim constellation; Alcohol; Sexual assault; Violence Abstract: For the timeframe of February 1st, 2003 until December 31st, 2005, all forensic medical experts at the Medico-Legal Center of the Institute of Legal Medicine in Hamburg, Germany, completed a standardized questionnaire for every consenting surviving violence victim (n =2733) age 14 and older. Central to the quantitative analysis of the data collected was the extraction of specific injury characteristics from the sample population. A correlation was demonstrated between injury typologies and four possible perpetrator-victim constellations, each of which was subcategorized into sexual and non-sexual assaults. This paper assesses how various sources of uncertainty propagate through the uncertainty cascade from emission scenarios through climate models and hydrological models to impacts, with a particular focus on groundwater aspects from a number of coordinated studies in Denmark. Our results are similar to those from surface water studies showing that climate model uncertainty dominates the results for projections of climate change impacts on streamflow and groundwater heads. However, we found uncertainties related to geological conceptualization and hydrological model discretization to be dominant for projections of well field capture zones, while the climate model uncertainty here is of minor importance. How to reduce the uncertainties on climate change impact projections related to groundwater is discussed, with an emphasis on the potential for reducing climate model biases through the use of fully coupled climate–hydrology models.Editor D. Projections of climate change impact are associated with a cascade of uncertainties including in CO2 emission scenarios, climate models, downscaling and impact models. The relative importance of the individual uncertainty sources is expected to depend on several factors including the quantity that is projected. In the present study the impacts of climate model uncertainty and geological model uncertainty on hydraulic head, stream flow, travel time and capture zones are evaluated. Six versions of a physically based and distributed hydrological model, each containing a unique interpretation of the geological structure of the model area, are forced by 11 climate model projections. Each projection of future climate is a result of a GCM-RCM model combination (from the ENSEMBLES project) forced by the same CO2 scenario (A1B). The changes from the reference period (1991-2010) to the future period (2081-2100) in projected hydrological variables are evaluated and the effects of geological model and climate model uncertainties are quantified. The results show that uncertainty propagation is context-dependent. While the geological conceptualization is the dominating uncertainty source for projection of travel time and capture zones, the uncertainty due to the climate models is more important for groundwater hydraulic heads and stream flow. Abstract: The phase relations in the Fe-rich part of the pseudo-binary system SrO–Fe2O3 (>33mol% Fe2O3) were reinvestigated between 800 and 1500°C in air. A combination of microscopy, electron probe micro-analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis was used to determine phase relations, crystal structure parameters and phase transition temperatures. M-type hexagonal ferrite SrFe12O19 (85.71mol% Fe2O3) is stable up to 1410°C. No indication of a significant phase width was found; Sr4Fe6O13± δ appears as a second phase in compositions with <85.71±0.2mol% Fe2O3. Sr4Fe6O13± δ itself is stable between 800 and 1250°C. Two other hexagonal ferrites were found to exist at high temperatures only: W-type SrFe2+ 2Fe3+ 16O27 is stable between 1350 and 1440°C and X-type ferrite Sr2Fe2+ 2Fe3+ 28O46 between 1350 and 1420°C, respectively, which is shown here for the first time. These findings in combination with previously published data were used to derive a corrected phase diagram of the Fe-rich part of the pseudo-binary system SrO–Fe2O3. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background:Focal neurological deficits following cardiopulmonary bypass surgery are usually thought to be the result of embolic stroke. Computed tomography (CT) is sometimes negative although severe deficits persist. Objectives: To describe a syndrome consisting of reduced postoperative vigilance, frequent epileptic seizures and focal neurological deficits in the presence of an apparently normal CT scan and often isolated cortical infarction on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: We retrospectively collected data on all patients fulfilling the above-mentioned criteria, seen for neurological examination by the consultant between 2002 and 2006 in our heart center. Results: We found 39 patients, nearly all of whom had cortical hyperintense lesions on diffusion-weighted MRI in the right hemisphere with corresponding left-sided hemiparesis. Early seizures occurred in 31 patients. Clinical outcome was heterogeneous. Conclusions: Predominance of right hemisphere involvement and lesion pattern in MRI make air embolism the most probable cause for this postoperative syndrome. Copyright © 2009 S. A case of a 79-year-old woman who developed emphysematous cystitis (EC) prior to scheduled lower back surgery, suffering from severe back pain was presented. She had neither of the known EC risk factors (diabetes mellitus, immunodeficiency, neurogenic bladder and recurrent urinary tract infections) and presented herself without classical signs of EC (dysuria, haematuria, abdominal pain, pollakiuria, pneumaturia). She had a persistent back pain that was masked by her chronic back condition, leukocytosis and increased C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations. The abdominal ultrasound showed a suspiciously impeded, cloudy vision in the lower pelvis and a blurry, thickened presentation of the wall of the urinary bladder with high echogenicity. A CT scan of the abdomen was performed and confirmed the diagnosis of an emphysematous cystitis, as well as a secondary pyelonephritis Escherichia coli was isolated from urine and blood and successfully treated with ciprofloxacin. Contrast-enhanced CT imaging is the diagnostic method of choice.
