Abstract

New approaches such as selective area growth, where crystal growth is lithographically controlled, allow the integration of bottom-up grown semiconductor nanomaterials in large-scale classical and quantum nanoelectronics. This calls for assessment and optimization of the reproducibility between individual components. We quantify the structural and electronic statistical reproducibility within large arrays of nominally identical selective area growth InAs nanowires. The distribution of structural parameters is acquired through comprehensive atomic force microscopy studies and transmission electron microscopy. These are compared to the statistical distributions of the cryogenic electrical properties of 256 individual SAG nanowire field effect transistors addressed using cryogenic multiplexer circuits. Correlating measurements between successive thermal cycles allows distinguishing between the contributions of surface impurity scattering and fixed structural properties to device reproducibility. The results confirm the potential of SAG nanomaterials, and the methodologies for quantifying statistical metrics are essential for further optimization of reproducibility.

Abstract

Bottom-up grown nanomaterials play an integral role in the development of quantum technologies. Among these, semiconductor nanowires (NWs) are widely used in proof-of-principle experiments, however, difficulties in parallel processing of conventionally-grown NWs makes scalability unfeasible. Here, we harness selective area growth (SAG) to remove this road-block. We demonstrate large scale integrated SAG NW circuits consisting of 512 channel multiplexer/demultiplexer pairs, incorporating thousands of interconnected SAG NWs operating under deep cryogenic conditions. Multiplexers enable a range of new strategies in quantum device research and scaling by increase the device count while limiting the number of connections between room-temperature control electronics and the cryogenic samples. As an example of this potential we perform a statistical characterization of large arrays of identical SAG quantum dots thus establishing the feasibility of applying cross-bar gating strategies for efficient scaling of future SAG quantum circuits., Comment: Main text and Supplementary Information

18. Distilling the Evolving Contributions of Anthropogenic Aerosols and Greenhouse Gases to Large‐Scale Low‐Frequency Surface Ocean Changes Over the Past Century.

Abstract

Anthropogenic aerosols (AER) and greenhouse gases (GHG)—the leading drivers of the forced historical change—produce different large‐scale climate response patterns, with correlations trending from negative to positive over the past century. To understand what caused the time‐evolving comparison between GHG and AER response patterns, we apply a low‐frequency component analysis to historical surface ocean changes from CESM1 single‐forcing large‐ensemble simulations. While GHG response is characterized by its first leading mode, AER response consists of two distinct modes. The first one, featuring long‐term global AER increase and global cooling, opposes GHG response patterns up to the mid‐twentieth century. The second one, featuring multidecadal variations in AER distributions and interhemispheric asymmetric surface ocean changes, appears to reinforce the GHG warming effect over recent decades. AER thus can have both competing and synergistic effects with GHG as their emissions change temporally and spatially. Plain Language Summary: Anthropogenically forced climate change over the past century has been mainly caused by two types of emissions: greenhouse gases (GHG) and aerosols (AER). In general, sulfate aerosols from industrial sources can reflect shortwave radiation to yield a cooling effect opposite to the GHG warming effect. However, model simulations isolating GHG and AER forcings show that the large‐scale climate effect of AER does not always dampen the GHG effect. Instead, over recent decades, AER have produced surface ocean response patterns more like the GHG response. Using a novel low‐frequency statistical decomposion, we find that aerosols have driven two distinct modes of climate change patterns over the historical period. The first mode is associated with global aerosol increase, resulting in global‐wide cooling damping the GHG‐induced warming. The second mode is associated with the shift in aerosol emissions from north America/western Europe to southeast Asia, which drives regional changes enhancing the GHG effect. Our results highlight the importance of considering the temporal and spatial evolutions of AER emissions in assessing GHG and AER climate effects and attributing historical anthropogenic climate changes to GHG and AER forcings. Abstract

Large-scale genomic studies have significantly increased our knowledge of genetic variability across populations. Regional genetic profiling is essential for distinguishing common benign variants from disease-causing ones. To this end, we conducted a comprehensive characterization of exonic variants in the population of Navarre (Spain), utilizing whole genome sequencing data from 358 unrelated individuals of Spanish origin. Our analysis revealed 61,410 biallelic single nucleotide variants (SNV) within the Navarrese cohort, with 35% classified as common (MAF > 1%). By comparing allele frequency data from 1000 Genome Project (excluding the Iberian cohort of Spain, IBS), Genome Aggregation Database, and a Spanish cohort (including IBS individuals and data from Medical Genome Project), we identified 1069 SNVs common in Navarre but rare (MAF ≤ 1%) in all other populations. We further corroborated this observation with a second regional cohort of 239 unrelated exomes, which confirmed 676 of the 1069 SNVs as common in Navarre. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of population-specific characterization of genetic variation to improve allele frequency filtering in sequencing data analysis to identify disease-causing variants. Abstract

Assessment of mine rehabilitation strategies including soil cover treatments rely mainly on soil physico‐chemical properties or plant performance indices, while much less is known about the response of biological soil properties. This field study evaluated the response of soil mesofauna (Collembola and Acari) in soil cover treatments (mainly subsoil and subsoil) on mine tailings, with or without organic amendments. The field experiment was conducted in large (1 m3) units rehabilitated in 2014, and mesofauna in soil cores was assessed 7 years later. The richness of Collembola and Acari as well as the density of Acari increased with organic amendments. Collembola community composition changed with the addition of soil cover and organic amendments. The density and community composition of Acari were strongly positively associated with organic carbon. The density of Euedaphic Collembola decreased, whereas Hemiedaphic and Epedaphic forms increased with soil cover. The contribution of generalist and metal‐tolerant species explained the high density of Euedaphic life forms in tailings. Species‐specific traits for Collembola and Acari could play an essential role in explaining the response of populations to treatments, such as affinity for C‐enriched habitats, food preferences, and sensitivity to heavy metals. Overall, it is recommended to use a multiple diversity indices approach, to collect data on the density and assemblage of mesofauna species to investigate the response of mesofauna communities to soil cover treatments. Abstract

Polyploidy is common among grasses (Poaceae) and poses challenges for conventional breeding. Genome editing technology circumvents crossing and selfing, enabling targeted modifications to multiple gene copies in a single generation while maintaining the heterozygous context of many polyploid genomes. Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flüggé; 2n=4x=40) is an apomictic, tetraploid C4 species that is widely grown in the southeastern United States as forage in beef cattle production and utility turf. The chlorophyll biosynthesis gene magnesium chelatase (MgCh) was selected as a rapid readout target for establishing genome editing in tetraploid bahiagrass. Vectors containing sgRNAs, Cas9 and nptII were delivered to callus cultures by biolistics. Edited plants were characterized through PCR-based assays and DNA sequencing, and mutagenesis frequencies as high as 99% of Illumina reads were observed. Sequencing of wild type (WT) bahiagrass revealed a high level of sequence variation in MgCh likely due to the presence of at least two copies with possibly eight different alleles, including pseudogenes. MgCh mutants exhibited visible chlorophyll depletion with up to 82% reductions in leaf greenness. Two lines displayed progression of editing over time which was linked to somatic editing. Apomictic progeny of a chimeric MgCh editing event were obtained and allowed identification of uniformly edited progeny plants among a range of chlorophyll depletion phenotypes. Sanger sequencing of a highly edited mutant revealed elevated frequency of a WT allele, probably due to frequent homology-directed repair (HDR). To our knowledge these experiments comprise the first report of genome editing applied in perennial, warm-season turf or forage grasses. Abstract

Future changes in the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are uncertain, both because future projections differ between climate models and because the large internal variability of ENSO clouds the diagnosis of forced changes in observations and individual climate model simulations. By leveraging 14 single model initial-condition large ensembles (SMILEs), we robustly isolate the time-evolving response of ENSO sea surface temperature (SST) variability to anthropogenic forcing from internal variability in each SMILE. We find nonlinear changes in time in many models and considerable inter-model differences in projected changes in ENSO and the mean-state tropical Pacific zonal SST gradient. We demonstrate a linear relationship between the change in ENSO SST variability and the tropical Pacific zonal SST gradient, although forced changes in the tropical Pacific SST gradient often occur later in the 21st century than changes in ENSO SST variability, which can lead to departures from the linear relationship. Single-forcing SMILEs show a potential contribution of anthropogenic forcing (aerosols and greenhouse gases) to historical changes in ENSO SST variability, while the observed historical strengthening of the tropical Pacific SST gradient sits on the edge of the model spread for those models for which single-forcing SMILEs are available. Our results highlight the value of SMILEs for investigating time-dependent forced responses and inter-model differences in ENSO projections. The nonlinear changes in ENSO SST variability found in many models demonstrate the importance of characterizing this time-dependent behavior, as it implies that ENSO impacts may vary dramatically throughout the 21st century. Abstract

Background: Despite being a very common type of genetic variation, the distribution of copy-number variations (CNVs) in the population is still poorly understood. The knowledge of the genetic variability, especially at the level of the local population, is a critical factor for distinguishing pathogenic from non-pathogenic variation in the discovery of new disease variants. Results: Here, we present the SPAnish Copy Number Alterations Collaborative Server (SPACNACS), which currently contains copy number variation profiles obtained from more than 400 genomes and exomes of unrelated Spanish individuals. By means of a collaborative crowdsourcing effort whole genome and whole exome sequencing data, produced by local genomic projects and for other purposes, is continuously collected. Once checked both, the Spanish ancestry and the lack of kinship with other individuals in the SPACNACS, the CNVs are inferred for these sequences and they are used to populate the database. A web interface allows querying the database with different filters that include ICD10 upper categories. This allows discarding samples from the disease under study and obtaining pseudo-control CNV profiles from the local population. We also show here additional studies on the local impact of CNVs in some phenotypes and on pharmacogenomic variants. SPACNACS can be accessed at: http://csvs.clinbioinfosspa.es/spacnacs/. 49. SABRE: Swarm-Based Aerial Beamforming Radios: Experimentation and Emulation.

Abstract

We propose a novel distributed beamforming framework for UAVs, called SABRE, wherein airborne transmitters synchronize their operations for data communication with target receivers. SABRE chooses the best-suited subset of transmitters that maximizes user-defined QoS, considering relative distances from receivers, traffic characteristics, cumulative SNR desired at the receiver, and individual SNR estimated for each link. This paper makes three main contributions: (i) It shows how to achieve distributed beamforming in challenging, aerial hovering conditions by accurately synchronizing start-times and eliminating relative clock offsets. (ii) It proposes an algorithm with polynomial complexity that groups transmitters and chooses the receiver, maximizing the number of satisfied receivers in each round. (iii) It experimentally validates the concept of aerial beamforming in a testbed composed of four DJI-M100 UAVs in realistic outdoor environments. We follow this up with at-scale emulation involving beamforming with multiple candidate UAV transmitters in Colosseum, the world’s largest RF emulator. SABRE keeps the overall network frame error rate below 10% with a probability of 0.95 and manifests a 40% improvement in meeting user QoS thresholds over classical resource allocation methods.
