The high perishability of the yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) reduces its postharvest conservation and availability, mainly for in natura consumption. These losses of quality and commercial value occur due to the high respiration and loss of water. This work aimed to evaluate the influence of a modified atmosphere - wax emulsions and plastic film - on the shelf life of the yellow passion fruit. Plastic film (Cryovac D-955, 15 mum thickness) reduced fresh weight loss and fruit wilting, kept higher fruit and rind weight and higher pulp osmotic potential over the storage period. However, it was not efficient in the control of rottenness. Sparcitrus wax (22-23% polyethylene/maleyc resin) caused injury to the fruit, high fruit weight losses and wilting and resulted in lower pulp osmotic potential; this wax lead to a higher concentration of acid and a lower relation of soluble solids/acidity. Among the tested waxes, Fruit Wax (18-21% carnauba wax) was the best, promoting reduced weight loss, wilting and rottenness.

Este estudo teve por objetivo verificar o comportamento da bananeira (Musa spp.) 'Prata Anã' no primeiro ciclo de produção na localidade de Jaíba, MG, submetida a sete espaçamentos, com irrigação. Os tratamentos foram: triângulo: 2,7 m x 3,2 m (1.157 covas/ha) e 2,9 m x 3,4 m (1.014 covas/ha); fileira dupla em triângulo: 4,5 m x 2,0 m x 3,0 m (1.026 covas/ha) e 4,5 m x 2,0 m x 2,0 m (1.538 covas/ha); fileira dupla em retângulo: 4,5 m x 2,0 m x 3,5 m (879 covas/ha); e retângulo: 4,0 m x 2,0 m (1.250 covas/ha) e 3,0 m x 2,0 m (1.666 covas/ha). Os sistemas de espaçamento e as densidades populacionais testados não alteraram as taxas de crescimento das plantas nem suas características na época da colheita. Entretanto, as bananeiras plantadas em maiores densidades apresentaram maior produtividade, atingindo até 29,1 t/ha. As plantas apresentaram, em média, ciclo do plantio à colheita de 411 dias, ciclo do florescimento à colheita de 141 dias, e cachos com 17,7 kg, 9,1 pencas e 134 frutos. Para o primeiro ciclo de produção, o espaçamento mais apropriado foi de 3,0 m x 2,0 m, em retângulo, para a região de Jaíba.

Post-harvest fungal diseases, such as anthracnose, are common causes of spoilage in papaya fruits, accounting for considerable economic losses. The use of ozone gas is an alternative to tackle this problem, as it is a strong oxidizing and antimicrobial agent. Thus, the objective of the present work was to evaluate the efficiency of ozonized water for controlling anthracnose in papayas. It also aimed at assessing the influence of this treatment in CO2 production, weight loss, and fruit coloration. Papayas inoculated with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and C. magna were exposed to ozone dissolved in water at the concentration of 0.8 mg L−1 for 40, 80, 120, and 160 min. At the temperature of 11 °C, the longest exposure times implied in a decline of CO2 production and a reduction of fruit firmness. The storage at 25 °C resulted in a lower percentage of injured areas, less CO2 production, and less effect on firmness, in comparison with the untreated fruits. The application of ozone dissolved in water at 0.8 mg L−1 for up to 160 min is a feasible alternative for controlling the severity of anthracnose in post-harvested papaya of the variety Golden, without negatively affecting the quality of the fruits. The objective of the study was to elucidate the best combination of ethylene dose and exposure time aiming the degreening of 'Ponkan' tangerines. Fruits harvested with fully green peel were placed in airtight boxes, exposed during 24, 48 and 96 h to ethylene gas at concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 µL L-1, at a temperature of 20 ± 1°C and 90 ± 5% of relative humidity. On every 24 h the fruits were evaluated for color, Hue angle, total chlorophyll and carotenoids in the peel, solutes leakage, soluble solids, titrable acidity, CO2 production and fresh fruit weight loss. The degreening was more pronounced in fruits exposed to ethylene for 96 h, independently the concentration. The electrolytes leakage peel increased linearly in fruit-control and those exposed to ethylene for 24 h. In fruits treated for 48 and 96 h, electrolyte leakage was observed only during ethylene exposure. The accumulated fresh mass loss did not exceeded 1% in the fruits. The ethylene dose did not affected the fruit respiratory behavior. The best combination aiming fruit degreening was the exposure during 96 h with 5 µL L-1 of ethylene, followed by 48 to 72 hours of storage after treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of CaCl2 application in preharvest and in different doses and times in order to control the natural fruit dropping of banana 'FHIA-18'. The experimental design was in a randomized blocks, in a factorial scheme 3x3+1 control, with three doses of CaCl2 (2, 4 and 6%), three times of application (60, 90 and 120 days) after the bunch emission, with five replicates and one plant per parcel. A linear decrease of dropping resistance and fruit time maturation with increasing doses of CaCl2 was observed. The fruits showed to be more consistent with three applications of CaCl2. The calcium content of the peel and pulp were not significantly changed with the doses and applications of CaCl2, indicating that calcium is not absorbed effectively by the fruits. The application of CaCl2 in preharvest do not reduce the natural fruit dropping in banana 'FHIA-18'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physiologically mature 'Ubá' mangoes were treated with ethylene or calcium carbide (CaC2) aiming to accelerate and standardize fruit ripening. Fruits with mean weight of 133.8±1.9g were treated with concentrations of 0, 20, 40, 80 and 160g CaC2 chamber m-3 and 0, 50, 100, 200 and 400mL of ethylene/chamber m³, in chambers at 18.1±0.7°C and 90±3% RH, for 24h. After the treatment, the fruits were kept under the same conditions of temperature and RH, and were evaluated at 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 days of storage. Ethylene and CaC2 increased mass loss of the fruits. Mangoes treated with CaC2 showed the respiratory climacteric peak at 3, 6, 9, 9 and 12 days of storage for the concentrations 160, 80, 40, 20 and 0g m-3, respectively. Fruits treated with ethylene showed the peak at 3, 3, 6, 6 and 12 days of storage for the concentrations 400, 200, 100, 50 and 0mL m-3, respectively. All concentrations of CaC2 and ethylene accelerated the loss of firmness, the increase of soluble solids and carotenoids, the reduction of acidity and the change in color of skin and pulp. However, these products also increased electrolyte leakage and decreased ascorbic acid content. Fruits treated with ethylene showed sharper firmness loss compared with fruits treated with CaC2. On the other hand, solute leakage was higher in fruits treated with CaC2. Soluble solids content increased with increasing concentrations of CaC2 and ethylene. The concentrations of 20g of CaC2 and 50mL of ethylene per chamber m³ were sufficient to accelerate and uniformize ripening of 'Ubá' mango. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Preharvest application of ethephon, a compound that releases ethylene when hydrolyzed, can anticipate and standardize mango harvesting. In this study, the effects of different doses of ethephon, applied at preharvest, on harvest anticipation of 'Ubá' mango were evaluated. On the 17th week after anthesis, 25 mango trees, five per treatment, were sprayed with ethephon at 0, 250, 500, 750 and 1000mg L-1, plus 0.5% of mineral oil. Five fruits from each plant were harvested daily until full ripening, and evaluated. Except, for dose 0mg L-1, in which six days after ethephon application (DAAE), harvest was carried out weekly up to 41DAAE The treated fruit presented a more intense flesh color than the non-treated, particularly at the doses of 500 and 750mg L-1. Fruit treated with 500, 750 and 1000mg L-1 showed abrupt firmness reduction from the 1st DAAE and TSS higher than 18°Brix on the 6th DAAE. Nontreated fruit presented slower firmness reduction and reached 18°Brix on the 35th DAAE. The dose of 1000mg L-1 of ethephon resulted in premature fall and low fruit quality. Application of 500 or 750mg L-1 of ethephon allowed to anticipate and to standardize mango harvesting. The use of models to describe the growths of plants has a wide application in the agronomy and cattle research. In this type of research, two problems are often present: to find the model that shows more information, which is best fitted to the biologic phenomenon and identifying curves that are statistically equal. Thus, the objective of the present work was to compare the quality adjustments models of non linear regression in the description of growth and to compare the curves from this best model in relation to different treatments. Data from an experiment installed in a factorial arrangement 2x5, in a randomized design of blocks with eight repetitions were used. The levels of treatments were constituted by two banana tree cultivars and five doses of a growth regulator. The cluster analysis was used with three statistics that allowed access to the ideal number of groups. In the comparison of growth models, the superiority of the logistic model was observed. For comparison of treatments, it was verified that the cluster method analysis with the changes proposed allowed to detect three groups of treatments, that are similar to the biologic behavior.
