This exploratory study presents, for the first time, an analysis of how residential satisfaction (RS) can be related to earthen building materials. The study utilizes an ongoing world-renowned project in Auroville, India, which aims to promote the environmentally friendly Compressed Stabilized Earth Block (CSEB) as a substitute for non-ecological fired-brick. The research employs the semantic differential (SD) method as a means to examine satisfaction. It seeks to explain the limitations of CSEB usage compared to fired-brick and compares satisfaction levels among different groups of residents. For the first time, it has been proven through our findings that CSEB has a significant positive impact on RS, while fired-brick demonstrates no influence on RS. The restricted use of CSEB cannot solely be attributed to its level of house-building-material satisfaction (HBMS), as CSEB surpasses fired-bricks in HBMS rating. Despite this, houses constructed with CSEB offer equivalent levels of RS to those constructed with fired-bricks, sparking a resourceful discussion on various interpretations related to RS theories. One perspective posits that CSEB technology may not be widely adopted, while others emphasize the importance of supporting its development despite the anticipated positive behavior toward it.

Women of childbearing age are a group that plays an important role in the agricultural sector not only in Indonesia but also in other agricultural countries around the world. The types of agricultural activities undertaken by WUS are sometimes the same as those of men, even those that allow contact with pesticides. Women of childbearing age in Pagaralam are at risk of experiencing health effects such as anemia, due to their exposure to Organophosphates. It is necessary to conduct research aimed at analyzing the determinants of pesticide exposure to the haemoglobin level in WUS as a basis for recommendations for efforts to prevent and overcome the effects of pesticide exposure. The design of this study was observational with a cross sectional study approach. The study population was women of childbearing age who were exposed to pesticides in the South Dempo District of Pagaralam, with a sample size of 120 WUS. Sampling using cluster sampling technique. Data collection was carried out through interviews using a questionnaire, observation using a checklist, measurement of body weight using a weight scale, height using a microtoise, and Hb levels using the Easy Touch GCHB tool. Data analysis of the results of the study was carried out univariately, and bivariate using the Chi- Square.The results of bivariate analysis of variables show that were significant with the haemoglobin level in women of childbearing age in South Dempo District were tenure, long time laundry spraying and length of time preparing pesticide. While variables that are not associated with haemoglobin levels are length of spraying, length of time mixed, frequency of spraying, and use of PPE. It is recommended that women of childbearing age reduce the length of time washing clothes spraying and the length of time preparing pesticides through good time management. In this article, we propose an application which resides in wind pumping, in particular the possibility to eliminate the power electronics interface. This fact is based on the exploitation of the torque-speed characteristic of the centrifugal type pump. The pumping system proposed in this article is made up of a three-blade turbine, two permanent magnets synchronous machines, one of which plays the role of the generator and the other motor driving the centrifugal pump. The good choice of machines and the centrifugal pump made possible the operation of the system of pumping with elimination of the static converter.The mathematical model to eliminate the static converter is developed and presented, implemented and simulated in the Matlab/Simulink environment.The simulation results obtained are validated by comparison with other simulation results of a wind pumping system with the presence of the power electronics interface.

Abstract Asymmetry between the left and right hemisphere is a key feature of brain organization. Hemispheric functional specialization underlies some of the most advanced human-defining cognitive operations, such as articulated language, perspective taking, or rapid detection of facial cues. Yet, genetic investigations into brain asymmetry have mostly relied on common variants, which typically exert small effects on brain-related phenotypes. Here, we leverage rare genomic deletions and duplications to study how genetic alterations reverberate in human brain and behavior. We designed a pattern-learning approach to dissect the impact of eight high-effect-size copy number variations (CNVs) on brain asymmetry in a multi-site cohort of 552 CNV carriers and 290 non-carriers. Isolated multivariate brain asymmetry patterns spotlighted regions typically thought to subserve lateralized functions, including language, hearing, as well as visual, face and word recognition. Planum temporale asymmetry emerged as especially susceptible to deletions and duplications of specific gene sets. Targeted analysis of common variants through genome-wide association study (GWAS) consolidated partly diverging genetic influences on the right versus left planum temporale structure. In conclusion, our gene-brain-behavior data fusion highlights the consequences of genetically controlled brain lateralization on uniquely human cognitive capacities.

Female farmers of childbearing age are at risk of adverse health effects due to pesticide exposure in agricultural activities. The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that does not meet the required standards is one of the factors that causes high pesticide exposure in female farmers of childbearing age. Therefore, the objective of this research was to analyze the factors associated with PPE use behavior among female farmers of childbearing age in South Dempo District of Pagar Alam. This research was a quantitative analytic with a cross-sectional approach. The population of this study was all farmers of childbearing age in the South Dempo District Pagar Alam. A sample of 116 respondents was selected through simple random sampling. Data collection was conducted through interviews using a questionnaire. Data processing was carried out with the stages of editing, coding, entry, and cleaning. Bivariate analysis employed the chi-square test, while multivariate employed the multiple logistic regression. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there were significant associations between the variables and PPE use behavior: education level, income level, knowledge, attitude, and PPE availability (p-value0,05). The multivariate analysis showed that the most dominant variable determining PPE use behavior was PPE availability. The study concluded that PPE availability was the most determining factor in the PPE use behavior among female farmers of childbearing age.

This article proposes a novel Direct Detection (DD) scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications where tedious, slow, and computationally demanding channel state information (CSI) estimation and detection processes are not required. The proposed detection scheme is achieved by exploiting the frequency and/or temporal correlation among the transmitted signals to directly extract the information symbols from the received signals. The results obtained show that the proposed scheme offers a significant advantage of approximately 15 dB performance gain compared to conventional linear detection schemes, even when such schemes are using perfect CSI. Furthermore, the proposed detection algorithm can be efficiently implemented using the Viterbi Algorithm, or its variants, to achieve further complexity reduction.

Abstract Background The Algerian honey bee population is composed of two described subspecies A. m. intermissa and A. m. sahariensis, of which little is known regarding population genomics, both in terms of genetic differentiation and of possible contamination by exogenous stock. Moreover, the phenotypic differences between the two subspecies are expected to translate into genetic differences and possible adaptation to heat and drought in A. m. sahariensis. To shed light on the structure of this population and to integrate these two subspecies in the growing dataset of available haploid drone sequences, we performed whole-genome sequencing of 151 haploid drones. Results Integrated analysis of our drone sequences with a similar dataset of European reference populations did not detect any significant admixture in the Algerian honey bees. Interestingly, most of the genetic variation was not found between the A. m. intermissa and A. m. sahariensis subspecies; instead, two main genetic clusters were found along an East–West axis. We found that the correlation between genetic and geographic distances was higher in the Western cluster and that close-family relationships were mostly detected in the Eastern cluster, sometimes at long distances. In addition, we selected a panel of 96 ancestry-informative markers to decide whether a sampled bee is Algerian or not, and tested this panel in simulated cases of admixture. Conclusions The differences between the two main genetic clusters suggest differential breeding management between eastern and western Algeria, with greater exchange of genetic material over long distances in the east. The lack of detected admixture events suggests that, unlike what is seen in many places worldwide, imports of queens from foreign countries do not seem to have occurred on a large scale in Algeria, a finding that is relevant for conservation purposes. In addition, the proposed panel of 96 markers was found effective to distinguish Algerian from European honey bees. Therefore, we conclude that applying this approach to other taxa is promising, in particular when genetic differentiation is difficult to capture.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) represents a major challenge for the poultry industry, causing significant economic losses. This problem is exacerbated by the misuse use of antibiotics in Veterinary Medicine, leading to the emergence of resistant strains and thus creating a significant risk to Public Health. This study, carried out on 38 poultry farms in Algeria, involved the collection of 200 samples for the isolation of E. coli strains. The resistance of these strains to frequently used antibiotics was assessed using the agar diffusion method. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was used to determine potential risk factors. The obtained results revealed that E. coli was present in 30% of samples. Alarming levels of resistance were observed against Tetracycline (81.6%), Ampicillin (78.3%), Ciprofloxacin (68.3%) and Nalidixic acid (60%). Stressful environmental conditions in poultry houses, such as temperature variations, high humidity, poor ventilation and stocking density were identified as key factors in the development of avian colibacillosis. In conclusion, the current study highlights the urgent need to strictly monitor and regulate the use of antibiotics in Veterinary Medicine and improve animal welfare in order to minimize the risk it pose to Public Health originated in the farms. In addition, it is essential that farmers maintain optimal environmental conditions in chicken rearing.

IntroductionRare copy number variants (CNVs) and polygenic risk for intelligence (PRS-IQ) both confer susceptibility for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but have opposing effects on cognitive ability. The field has struggled to disentangle the effects of these two classes of genomic variants on cognitive ability from their effects on ASD susceptibility, in part because previous studies did not include controls with cognitive measures. We aim to investigate the impact of these genomic variants on ASD risk while adjusting for their known effects on cognitive ability.MethodsIn a cohort of 8,426 subjects with ASD and 169,804 controls with cognitive assessments, we found that rare coding CNVs and PRS-IQ increased ASD risk, even after adjusting for their effects on cognitive ability.ResultsBottom decile PRS-IQ and CNVs both decreased cognitive ability but had opposing effects on ASD risk. Models combining both classes of variants showed that the effects of rare CNVs and PRS-IQ on ASD risk and cognitive ability were largely additive, further suggesting that susceptibility for ASD is conferred independently from its effects on cognitive ability. Despite imparting mostly additive effects on ASD risk, rare CNVs and PRS-IQ showed opposing effects on core and associated features and developmental history among subjects with ASD.DiscussionOur findings suggest that cognitive ability itself may not be the factor driving the underlying liability for ASD conferred by these two classes of genomic variants. In other words, ASD risk and cognitive ability may be two distinct manifestations of CNVs and PRS-IQ. This study also highlights the challenge of understanding how genetic risk for ASD maps onto its dimensional traits.

The three oyster lenses of the upper Tortonian of Djebel Touaka site which are described herein contain three species, Crassostrea gryphoides (Schlotheim), Ostrea lamellosa (Brocchi) and Hyotissa squarrosa (De Serre). The density of shell packing between the lenses is dissimilar. Most of the specimens are disarticulated and poorly fragmented; they exhibit a random distribution and orientation, without any distinct sorting. Bioerosion and encrustation are featured on both surfaces of left and right valves. The identified ichnogenera are Entobia (Bronn), Gastrochaenolites (Leymarie, 1842), Caulostrepsis (Clarke, 1908), Trypanites (Mägdefrau, 1932) and Maeandropolydora (Voigt, 1965). Encrusters are scared, represented by juvenile oysters/other bivalves, bryozoans and barnacles. The coexistence of borings on both sides of valves means that they probably occur not only while alive, but they keep happening after death. The oyster beds were deposited in a foreshore to shoreface environment, from the combined action of wave currents and sedimentation rate.

The monitoring of wind turbine (WT) systems allows operators to maximize their performance, consequently minimizing untimely shutdowns and related hazard situations while maximizing their efficiency. Indeed, the rational monitoring of WT ensures the identification of the main sources of risks at a proper time, such as internal or external failures, hence leading to an increase in their prevention by limiting the faults’ occurrence regarding the different components of wind turbines, achieving production objectives. In this context, the present paper develops a practical monitoring approach using a numerical fault-detection process for the pitch system based on a benchmark wind turbine (WT) model with the main aim of improving safety and security performance. Therefore, the proposed fault-diagnosis procedure deals with eventual faults occurring in the actuators and sensors of the pitch system. In this proposed approach, a simple, logical process is used to generate the correct residuals as fault information based on the redundancy in the actuators and sensors of the pitch sub-systems. The obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of this proposed process for ensuring the tasks of the fault diagnosis and condition monitoring of the WT systems, and it can be a promising approach for avoiding major damage in such systems, leading to their operational stability and improved reliability and availability.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria remain a global public health issue due to the barrier imposed by their outer membrane and their propensity to form biofilms. It is becoming imperative to develop new antibacterial strategies. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of Origanum vulgare essential oil (OEO), alone and in combination with antibiotics, as well as its antibiofilm action against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative strains. OEO components were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and antibacterial activity was assessed using the agar diffusion test and the microdilution method. Interactions between OEO and antibiotics were examined using the checkerboard method, while antibiofilm activity was analyzed using the crystal violet assay. Chemical analysis revealed that carvacrol was the major compound in OEO (61.51%). This essential oil demonstrated activity against all the tested strains, with inhibition zone diameters (IZDs) reaching 32.3 ± 1.5 mm. The combination of OEO with different antibiotics produced synergistic and additive effects, leading to a reduction of up to 98.44% in minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). In addition, this essential oil demonstrated an ability to inhibit and even eradicate biofilm formation. These results suggest that OEO could be exploited in the development of new molecules, combining its metabolites with antibiotics.

Premature debonding between carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and concrete is a critical issue in structural reinforcement applications, often leading to a significant reduction in the load-carrying capacity of the system. This failure mode is typically initiated by inadequate adhesion at the interface, compromising the effectiveness of CFRP in enhancing the structural performance of concrete elements. To address these issues, this study explores the impact of silica sand on the mechanical and adhesion properties of epoxy resin composites. Initially, this paper investigates the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy resin composites by varying the ratios of silica sand from 0% to 15% by volume. Subsequently, it examines the effectiveness of these composites as sealing materials to enhance the bond strength between CFRP and concrete. Incorporating a 10% silica content improves the mechanical properties of the epoxy resin, with the tensile strength increasing from 29.47 MPa to 35.52 MPa and an elastic modulus from 4.38 GPa to 5.83 GPa. Furthermore, silica sand enhances the adhesion strength between CFRP and concrete, as confirmed by the increase in the pull-out force from 14.21 kN to 18.79 kN. Silica particles improve surface roughness and interlocking, contributing to a better load distribution and stress transfer at the interface. Therefore, silica-filled epoxy resin is an efficient material for CFRP–concrete bonding applications.

North Musi Rawas Regency, based on the results of the 2021 SSGI, is in 5th place for the Regency with the highest stunted toddler prevalence in South Sumatra, which is 28.3%. The results of the situation analysis based on PK21 data show that 12.8% of people there are at high risk of experiencing stunting. One of the efforts that can be made to accelerate the reduction of stunting rates is through university assistance. By the mandate of Presidential Regulation Number 72 of 2021, Musi Rawas University assists in the form of family assistance. This program has carried out by students for one month using counseling and mediation methods. The education provided is in the form of sensitive interventions, including environmental hygiene, using healthy latrines, the importance of clean and healthy water sources, and the importance of parenting patterns in the family. This mentoring activity increased 15% number of visits by toddlers to posyandu, which means that the community is starting to understand the importance of routinely monitoring children's health to prevent stunting

En considérant les spécificités du contexte sociolinguistique algérien, nous aborderons dans le cadre de cet article la pluralité linguistique dans le milieu scolaire. Autrement dit, nous poserons la question de l’impact de la diversité linguistique au plan social sur les représentations linguistiques et les identités langagières des protagonistes de la relation didactique. À travers cette réflexion qui vise l’étude des manifestations langagières en termes de représentations et de rapport aux langues, nous voulons aboutir à des suggestions didactiques fondées sur des paradigmes méthodologiques inhérents à la didactique du plurilinguisme de manière générale et à la sociodidactique de manière particulière.

La satire médiatique demeure au centre d’un débat public sur les limites de la liberté d’expression. La présente contribution propose d’analyser des articles satiriques du journal El Manchar parues entre 2015 et 2020. Elle s’intéresse, dans une démarche d’analyse du discours, à l’humour politiquement engagé et à cette possibilité d’amalgame, dans la satire, entre le contrat humoristique (avec mise à distance) et le contrat politico-militant (sans mise à distance). Cette étude s’applique, en conséquence, à analyser les traces de l’implication énonciatives des locuteursénonciateurs primaires. Elle porte un intérêt particulier à l’emploi de l’injure publique et de l’exagération hyperbolique. L’analyse du corpus d’étude révèle que cette satire politique offre un effet cathartique pour libérer la colère et exprimer l’indignation des satiristes. Elle semble devenir un instrument au service d’une idéologie contre le pouvoir en place et ses affidés.

Abstract Sleep disturbance is prevalent in youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Researchers have posited that circadian dysfunction may contribute to sleep problems or exacerbate ASD symptomatology. However, there is limited genetic evidence of this. It is also unclear how insomnia risk genes identified through GWAS in general populations are related to ASD and common sleep problems like insomnia traits in ASD. We investigated the contribution of copy number variants (CNVs) encompassing circadian pathway genes and insomnia risk genes to ASD risk as well as sleep disturbances in children with ASD. We studied 5860 ASD probands and 2092 unaffected siblings from the Simons Simplex Collection (SSC) and MSSNG database, as well as 7509 individuals from two unselected populations (IMAGEN and Generation Scotland). Sleep duration and insomnia symptoms were parent reported for SSC probands. We identified 335 and 616 rare CNVs encompassing circadian and insomnia risk genes respectively. Deletions and duplications with circadian genes were overrepresented in ASD probands compared to siblings and unselected controls. For insomnia-risk genes, deletions (not duplications) were associated with ASD in both cohorts. Results remained significant after adjusting for cognitive ability. CNVs containing circadian pathway and insomnia risk genes showed a stronger association with ASD, compared to CNVs containing other genes. Circadian genes did not influence sleep duration or insomnia traits in ASD. Insomnia risk genes intolerant to haploinsufficiency increased risk for insomnia when duplicated. CNVs encompassing circadian and insomnia risk genes increase ASD liability with little to no observable impacts on sleep disturbances.

The present study was carried out to valorize the Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) by-products by extracting and identifying their biochemical compounds and evaluating their antioxidant potential by in vitro activities (DPPH radical and FRAP), as well as their capacity to stabilize margarine oxidation (rancimat test). In addition, their in vitro anticoccidial effect on the destruction of Eimeria oocysts isolated from naturally infected chickens was also targeted. Microwaves and response surface methodology tools were used to extract the maximum amount of phenolic compounds (42.05 ± 0.46 GAE mg/g DW of total phenolic compounds in 90 s at 400 watts). Moreover, the effect of extraction factors was also studied. Eight phenolic compounds, including isorhamnetin, dihydrokaempferol, and kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, were identified. The findings confirmed that OFI peel extract has strong antioxidant activities (DPPH radical, ferric reducing power). The rancimat test shows that OFI peel extract improves margarine stability by 3.2 h. Moreover, it has a notable destruction rate of Eimeria oocysts (30.06 ± 0.51%, LC50: 60.53 ± 0.38 mg/mL). The present investigation offers promise for the reuse of food waste as natural margarine additives, protection of the environment, and substitution of anticoccidial synthetic treatments.
