- Abstract
Vanadium dioxide (VO
2 ) is a typical metal-insulator transition material, which changes from room-temperature monoclinic insulating phase to high-temperature rutile metallic phase. The phase transition of VO2 is accompanied by sudden changes in conductance and optical transmittance. Due to the excellent phase transition characteristics of VO2 , it has been widely studied in the applications of electric and optical devices, smart windows, sensors, actuators, etc. The dispersion properties of thin vanadium dioxide films were researched using the modulation polarimetry (MP) technique. VO2 thin films were deposited on quartz glass substrates by magnetron sputtering of the VO2 target. The films had different modifications of composition, structure, morphology, and optical properties due to the manufacturing technology. The main measured parameter of the MP technique is the polarization difference between the internal reflection coefficients of linearly polarized light with an electric field azimuth perpendicular and parallel to the plane of incidence. The spectral dependences of the polarization reflection difference were measured at different angles of light incidence for several samples. Spectral dependences of the polarization absorption difference were shown. Also, the dispersion characteristics of surface plasmonic polaritons appearing at the film-air interface were shown. The value of the group velocity of excitation of surface plasmons for all films was determined from the slope of the frequency depending on the wave vector. The proposed method makes it possible to conclude the film morphology. The crystal structure of the films was investigated using an X-ray diffractometer. The surface nanorelief of annealed vanadium dioxide films were studied using atomic force microscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

A series of composites containing nanoparticles of NiO (from 1 to 10% by weight per Ni), deposited on NORIT charcoal, was prepared by the decomposition of the Ni0 complex Ni(cod)2 (cod = cis,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene). Ni content in the composites was set by loading the appropriate quantities of the Ni(cod)2 precursor. The catalytic activity of the composites was associated with the in situ generation of active sites due to a reduction in NiO, hence the composites could be stored in air without a loss in their catalytic performance. The composites were analyzed by powder XRD, TEM, XPS, and adsorption methods. The hydrogenation of quinoline was used as a reference reaction for studies of the influence of temperature, P(H2), catalyst loading on the product yield, and for the selection of the composite possessing the highest performance. It was found that 3% Ni loading was the most optimal. This composite was used as an efficient catalyst for the hydrogenation of compounds with ethylene and acetylene bonds, nitro- and keto- groups as well as a series of substituted quinolines and analogs. The studied composites can be proposed as air-stable and efficient catalysts for the hydrogenation of a wide range of organic compounds.

OBJECTIVES:. To describe the prevalence, associated risk factors, and outcomes of serious neurologic manifestations (encephalopathy, stroke, seizure, and meningitis/encephalitis) among patients hospitalized with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. DESIGN:. Prospective observational study. SETTING:. One hundred seventy-nine hospitals in 24 countries within the Society of Critical Care Medicine Discovery Viral Infection and Respiratory Illness Universal Study COVID-19 Registry. PATIENTS:. Hospitalized adults with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection. INTERVENTIONS:. None. RESULTS:. Of 16,225 patients enrolled in the registry with hospital discharge status available, 2,092 (12.9%) developed serious neurologic manifestations including 1,656 (10.2%) with encephalopathy at admission, 331 (2.0%) with stroke, 243 (1.5%) with seizure, and 73 (0.5%) with meningitis/encephalitis at admission or during hospitalization. Patients with serious neurologic manifestations of COVID-19 were older with median (interquartile range) age 72 years (61.0–81.0 yr) versus 61 years (48.0–72.0 yr) and had higher prevalence of chronic medical conditions, including vascular risk factors. Adjusting for age, sex, and time since the onset of the pandemic, serious neurologic manifestations were associated with more severe disease (odds ratio [OR], 1.49; p < 0.001) as defined by the World Health Organization ordinal disease severity scale for COVID-19 infection. Patients with neurologic manifestations were more likely to be admitted to the ICU (OR, 1.45; p < 0.001) and require critical care interventions (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: OR, 1.78; p = 0.009 and renal replacement therapy: OR, 1.99; p < 0.001). Hospital, ICU, and 28-day mortality for patients with neurologic manifestations was higher (OR, 1.51, 1.37, and 1.58; p < 0.001), and patients had fewer ICU-free, hospital-free, and ventilator-free days (estimated difference in days, –0.84, –1.34, and –0.84; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS:. Encephalopathy at admission is common in hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and is associated with worse outcomes. While serious neurologic manifestations including stroke, seizure, and meningitis/encephalitis were less common, all were associated with increased ICU support utilization, more severe disease, and worse outcomes.

OBJECTIVES:. To describe hospital variation in use of “guideline-based care” for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to COVID-19. DESIGN:. Retrospective, observational study. SETTING:. The Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Discovery Viral Infection and RESPIRATORY ILLNESS UNIVERSAL STUDY COVID-19 REGISTRY. PATIENTS:. Adult patients with ARDS due to COVID-19 between February 15, 2020, and April 12, 2021. INTERVENTIONS:. Hospital-level use of “guideline-based care” for ARDS including low-tidal-volume ventilation, plateau pressure less than 30 cm H2O, and prone ventilation for a Pao2/Fio2 ratio less than 100. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS:. Among 1,495 adults with COVID-19 ARDS receiving care across 42 hospitals, 50.4% ever received care consistent with ARDS clinical practice guidelines. After adjusting for patient demographics and severity of illness, hospital characteristics, and pandemic timing, hospital of admission contributed to 14% of the risk-adjusted variation in “guideline-based care.” A patient treated at a randomly selected hospital with higher use of guideline-based care had a median odds ratio of 2.0 (95% CI, 1.1–3.4) for receipt of “guideline-based care” compared with a patient receiving treatment at a randomly selected hospital with low use of recommended therapies. Median-adjusted inhospital mortality was 53% (interquartile range, 47–62%), with a nonsignificantly decreased risk of mortality for patients admitted to hospitals in the highest use “guideline-based care” quartile (49%) compared with the lowest use quartile (60%) (odds ratio, 0.7; 95% CI, 0.3–1.9; p = 0.49). CONCLUSIONS:. During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, only half of patients received “guideline-based care” for ARDS management, with wide practice variation across hospitals. Strategies that improve adherence to recommended ARDS management strategies are needed.

IMPORTANCE:. At the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, medications repurposed for management of coronavirus disease 2019 were used in the absence of clinical trial evidence. OBJECTIVES:. To describe the variation and evolution in use of repurposed medications for coronavirus disease 2019. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS:. Observational cohort study of adults hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 between February 15, 2020, and April 12, 2021, across 76 United States and international hospitals within the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Discovery Viral Infection and Respiratory Illness Universal Study coronavirus disease 2019 registry. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES:. Hospital variation was quantified using multivariable adjusted random effects logistic regression models and unsupervised clustering. Repurposed medications included antivirals, corticosteroids, hydroxychloroquine, immunomodulators, and therapeutic dose anticoagulants. RESULTS:. Among 7,069 adults hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019, 1,979 (28%) received antivirals, 2,876 (41%) received corticosteroids, 1,779 (25%) received hydroxychloroquine, 620 (9%) received immunomodulators, and 2,154 (31%) received therapeutic dose anticoagulants. Contribution of hospital site to risk-adjusted variation was 46% for antivirals, 30% for corticosteroids, 48% for hydroxychloroquine, 46% for immunomodulators, and 52% for therapeutic dose anticoagulants. Compared with the early pandemic, the later pandemic practice phenotypes converged with increased use of antivirals (odds ratio, 3.14; 95% CI, 2.40–4.10) and corticosteroids (odds ratio, 5.43; 95% CI, 4.23–6.97), with decreased use of hydroxychloroquine (odds ratio, 0.02; 95% CI, 0.01–0.04) and immunomodulators (odds ratio, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.34–0.70). There was no clinically significant change in the use of therapeutic dose anticoagulants (odds ratio, 1.01; 95% CI, 1.01–1.02). There were no differences in risk-adjusted mortality between hospitals with high rates of repurposed medication use compared with hospitals with low rates of use. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE:. Hospital variation in the use of repurposed medications varied widely across hospitals early in the pandemic and later converged with the emergence of randomized clinical trials. Platforms developed for rapid activation and enrollment in clinical trials of repurposed medications are needed prior to the next pandemic to expedite effective, evidence-based practice.

IMPORTANCE:. Even with its proclivity for older age, coronavirus disease 2019 has been shown to affect all age groups. However, there remains a lack of research focused primarily on the young adult population. OBJECTIVES:. To describe the epidemiology and outcomes of coronavirus disease 2019 and identify the risk factors associated with critical illness and mortality in hospitalized young adults. DESIGN, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS:. A retrospective cohort study of the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Viral Infection and Respiratory Illness Universal Study registry. Patients 18–40 years old, hospitalized from coronavirus disease 2019 from March 2020 to April 2021, were included in the analysis. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES:. Critical illness was defined as a composite of mortality and 21 predefined interventions and complications. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess associations with critical illness and mortality. RESULTS:. Data from 4,005 patients (152 centers, 19 countries, 18.6% non-U.S. patients) were analyzed. The median age was 32 years (interquartile range, 27–37 yr); 51% were female, 29.4% Hispanic, and 42.9% had obesity. Most patients (63.2%) had comorbidities, the most common being hypertension (14.5%) and diabetes (13.7%). Hospital and ICU mortality were 3.2% (129/4,005) and 8.3% (109/1,313), respectively. Critical illness occurred in 25% (n = 996), and 34.3% (n = 1,376) were admitted to the ICU. Older age (p = 0.03), male sex (adjusted odds ratio, 1.83 [95% CI, 1.2–2.6]), and obesity (adjusted odds ratio, 1.6 [95% CI, 1.1–2.4]) were associated with hospital mortality. In addition to the above factors, the presence of any comorbidity was associated with critical illness from coronavirus disease 2019. Multiple sensitivity analyses, including analysis with U.S. patients only and patients admitted to high-volume sites, showed similar risk factors. CONCLUSIONS:. Among hospitalized young adults, obese males with comorbidities are at higher risk of developing critical illness or dying from coronavirus disease 2019.

Objective: To reliably improve diagnostic fidelity and identify delays using a standardized approach applied to the electronic medical records of patients with emerging critical illness. Patients and Methods: This retrospective observational study at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, conducted June 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017, used a standard operating procedure applied to electronic medical records to identify variations in diagnostic fidelity and/or delay in adult patients with a rapid response team evaluation, at risk for critical illness. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified predictors and compared outcomes for those with and without varying diagnostic fidelity and/or delay. Results: The sample included 130 patients. Median age was 65 years (interquartile range, 56-76 years), and 47.0% (52 of 130) were women. Clinically significant diagnostic error or delay was agreed in 23 (17.7%) patients (κ=0.57; 95% CI, 0.40-0.74). Median age was 65.4 years (interquartile range, 60.3-74.8) and 9 of the 23 (30.1%) were female. The first observations of the heat release reaction in the nickel-lithium-hydrogen mixture of the A. Rossi heat generator were carried out at the Institute for Nuclear Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The presence of this reaction was recorded using the difference of the e.m.f. thermocouples in two separate reactor chambers with “fuel” and without it, which were inside of the heater. “Fuel” was a nickel powder with 10 % lithium aluminum hydride, total weight of 100 mg. At the first start-up of reactor with “fuel”, the reaction occurs at the temperature of 950 °C and intensively develops up to 1050 °C. Difference e.m.f. thermocouples in two reactor chambers does not exceed 20 °C. For 600 h of observation of this reaction, its behavior was ascertained: under repeated starts, the reaction begins at the temperature of less than 700 °C; the radiation power of gamma quanta with energy above 50 keV, which accompanies this reaction, is less than 0.012 µR/h; the neutron flux in 4π composes 6000 neutrons/h (±40 %); there was change in the isotope composition of 6Li from 7 % for “fuel” to 12 % for “ash”. For nickel isotopes, the decrease in the composition of 60Ni by 2.5 % and the increase in the composition of 62Ni at 0.5 % is indicated. This behavior certainly indicates that a low-energy nuclear reaction (LENR) is observed.

Transport theory for modeling the electric characteristics of high-quality p-n diodes has been developed. This theory takes into account a non-uniform profile of p- doping, finite thickness of the quasi-neutral regions and possible non-uniformity of the bulk recombination coefficient. The theory is based on related solutions of the Poisson equation, drift-diffusion equation and continuity equation with a generation-recombination term taking into account the simple band-to-band generation/recombination model. We have ascertained that the non-uniform profile of p-doping can lead to formation of p-n junctions with a specific two-slope form of the electrostatic barrier and two regions with the high built-in electric fields. We have found that at strong p + -doping the band structure of the InSb p-n junction has the form that can facilitate the emergence of additional mechanisms of current flow due to the tunneling and avalanche effects at the reverse bias. Using the literary data of the electron and hole lifetimes in InSb at cryogenic temperatures, we have found that the coefficient of bulk recombination can have an essential spatial dependence and considerably increases in the space charge region of p-n diode. The theory was applied to our analysis of p-n InSb diodes with p + -doping by using Be-ion implantation performed in ISP NASU. The theory predicts optimal conditions for detection of infrared emission. The technological process of fabrication, processing and testing has been described in details. Theoretically, it has been found that for parameters of the fabricated diodes and at 77 K the dark currents limited by diffusion and generation-recombination mechanisms should be less than 0.1 μA at the inverse bias of the order of 0.1 V. The measured diode’s I-V characteristics were expected to have strong asymmetry, however, dark currents are by one order larger than those predicted by theory. The latter can be associated with additional current mechanisms, namely: tunneling and avalanche effects.

Відображено основні негативні сторони застосування методів і засобів штучного інтелекту в політичній сфері та маніпуляції громадською думкою. Визначено головні перспективи використання технологій штучного інтелекту в політиці й підтримці демократії у світі. Зазначено основні перспективні моделі використання засобів штучного інтелекту для покращення якості роботи політичної сфери. Обгрунтовано необхідність подальших досліджень застосування штучного інтелекту в політичному процесі.

Chitin and its derivatives are common natural polymers that are widely used in various technological fields. In recent years, considerable attention has been paid to the preparation of polymer nanocomposites based on metal nanoparticles (NPs). Chitin/chitosan-based composites due to high antibacterial activity are suitable for application in related food storage, textile industries. This paper presents an effective and simple method of obtaining chitosan-chitin copolymer/Ag nanocomposites with an extremely high content of metal nanoparticles. The structure and morphology of the synthesized nanocomposites were investigated using X-ray diffractometry, Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and their optical properties were studied using UV-VIS spectroscopy as well as spectral ellipsometry. It was ascertained that the resulting nanocomposite films are characterized by a uniform distribution of spherical silver nanoparticles, the sizes of which increase (from 55 up to 143 nm) with increasing the Ag
+ -ions concentration in the reaction mixtures. The optical absorption spectra of nanocomposites are characterized by the presence of an absorption maximum within the range 458...525 nm, which confirms the formation of Ag NPs. The mechanisms underlying the origin of fractal shape of inclusions of a new phase in VO
2 films during metal-insulator phase transition are discussed. The obtained results show that hysteresis of the temperature dependence of resistance R(T) significantly depends on the film morphology and texture. Moreover, some fractal features are observed. To determine the fractal dimension D of the structural elements of the studied films from their images, different fractal analysis approaches were preliminary compared and discussed. As a result of the film image treatments, the boundaries of the structural elements were found to have fractal dimensions of 1.3 to 1.5 or higher and to correlate with the shape of R(T). The fractal boundaries indicate the dominant role of elastic stress on the phase transition of films, which is confirmed by numerical modeling. Based on these results, an analytical model is proposed that relates the free energy of a film to the fractal dimension of its constituents. Depending on the ratio of the elastic and interface specific energies, the position of the free energy minimum F corresponds to a certain fractal dimensionality D. A small interface energy leads to a higher fractal dimension making the initial phase more stable. This conclusion explains well all the effects observed experimentally in VO2 . As a typical Correlated Electron Material, vanadium dioxide was discovered to demonstrate metalinsulator transition at a relatively low temperature. The transition occurs from an insulating monoclinic phase to a metallic tetragonal phase (rutile structure) upon heating with the rearrangement of vanadium ions along an axis of the monoclinic lattice. The phase change corresponds to a colossal resistivity drop by over four orders of magnitude as well as other dramatic property changes, which can be reversible via a natural cooling process. Therefore, vanadium dioxide has attracted extensive attention for its applications in highly sensitive smart devices that can abruptly respond to diverse external stimuli. In recent years, rapid advancement in the fabrication and property modulation of vanadium dioxide has greatly facilitated its applications in many aspects, such as thermal sensing, thermochromics, electronics, and multiple-response mechanics. The optical properties of thin vanadium dioxide films VO
2 were researched using the modulation polarimetry technique. For VO2 thin film deposition the two-step method was used. VO2 films were grown on quartz glass substrates by magnetron sputtering of the VO2 target. The films had different modifications of composition, structure, morphology, and optical properties due to the manufacturing technology. The angular dependence of the reflection coefficients of electromagnetic radiation of s- and p- polarizations and their difference for different wavelengths was measured in the paper. The polarization characteristics were simulated by a matrix transformation of the Fresnel formulas. The nature of the chemical dissolution of GaAs, GaSb, InAs, and InSb single crystals in I
2 + dimethylformamide (DMF) and I2 + methanol solutions under reproducible hydrodynamic conditions has been studied. The dependence of the dissolution rate of these semiconductors on the composition of etchants, stirring rate, temperature, and storage time has been investigated. The compositions of polishing, selective and non-polishing solutions have been determined. The state of the surface after chemical-dynamic polishing (CDP) was investigated by metallographic analysis, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The electrochromic WO3 and NiO films were deposited by magnetron sputtering on indium tin oxides coated glass. The structural properties of the films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometery techniques. The electrochromic properties of the films were investigated by means cyclic voltammetry using different types of ionic conductors. The use of water electrolytes and electrolytes which are based on propylene carbonate leads to the destruction of electrochromic cells. The stable working electrochromic cell with WO3 and NiO films was obtained using ionic liquid as the ionic conductor. The coloration efficiency of electrochromic cell which is based on amorphous WO3 film and crystalline NiO film is 28.7 cm2 /C. Dental examination of the population indicate that the prevalence of dentition in the children and adolescents (by criteria of dental aesthetic index – Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI, 1989) is the average 54 %. The aim of the study to research individual orthodontic indications in the pupils of junior school age in Uzhhorod. There were examined 152 junior pupils, – 46.7 % boys and 53.3 % girls. Materials and Methods. There was conducted dental examination, basic methods of which including: the height of the chin, breathing character, condition of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), closing of the lips, nasolabial and chin folds, size of mouth slit, speech, harmful habits. The obtained data were recorded in a specially designed Table of orthodontic accounting indications. Results and Discussion. According to the research chin height was normal in 58.2 %, decreased in 33.5 % and increased in 8.2 %. More than a half of primary school children (55.3 %) had a breach of closing lips. Nasolabial and chin folds were expressed moderately in 58.6 % children. Among the most common bad habits were: bite lips and cheeks 84.8 % of the 152 investigated children. A substantial difference between the boys and the girls were found. Conclusions. We determined the following facts: studied orthodontic signs had a high prevalence among Uzhhorod children of primary school age. The specialists may strengthen the work with prevention of identified violations, involving parents, teachers, logopedists and dentists

OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: Missing data is a common problem in research studies that may lead to inconclusive or inaccurate results. It may even lead to harm secondary to wrong research conclusions. The purpose of this ancillary study is to measure the differences in missing data following implementation of a variety of mechanisms to improve data quality and documentation in a global quality improvement study. Many of the sites involved in the study were in low-income or middle-income countries with minimal research infrastructure. Missing data is defined as “values that are not available that would be meaningful for analysis if they were observed” (The prevention and treatment of missing data, New Engl J Med 367; 14, nejm.org, October 4, 2012). METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: All study sites used REDCap software to enter various data points including hospital and ICU admission and discharge dates as well as whether items on a Checklist relevant to processes of care in the ICU were reviewed. After initial general data collection phase, we categorized data as “must have” and “good to have.” “Must have” variables were defined as data variables that were essential for the study outcomes. “Good to have” variables would not affect the main outcomes of the study if missing. We measured completeness of data using the in-built REDCap data quality check feature. We used several strategies to encourage reduction of missing data. We initially did random data checks but noted that the amount of missing data was substantial and could not be adequately addressed this way. Second, we created excel sheets highlighting missing data for each site and notified sites. This proved onerous to create and made it burdensome for sites to identify easily where data was missing. Third, we built a custom report form in REDCap specifically able to identify which “must have” data points were missing. This could be easily accessed by the principal investigator at each site and made completing the data forms more straightforward. We encouraged all sites to complete their data collection by sending weekly data reports to each site highlighting the patients with missing data. An instructional YouTube tutorial was also created and the link was shared with all sites to demonstrate how to use the custom built report form in REDCap and how to appropriately fill in the missing data. Since this was a global study, we communicated with sites using a variety of locally favored mechanisms including Zoom, FaceTime, WeChat, WhatsApp as well as email. By harnessing the buy-in of local champions our approach was successful. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: The total number of patients recruited for the CERTAIN study is 4843. A series of composites containing nanoparticles of NiO (from 1 to 10% by weight per Ni), deposited on NORIT charcoal, was prepared by the decomposition of the Ni
0 complex Ni(cod)2 (cod = cis,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene). Ni content in the composites was set by loading the appropriate quantities of the Ni(cod)2 precursor. The catalytic activity of the composites was associated with the in situ generation of active sites due to a reduction in NiO, hence the composites could be stored in air without a loss in their catalytic performance. The composites were analyzed by powder XRD, TEM, XPS, and adsorption methods. The hydrogenation of quinoline was used as a reference reaction for studies of the influence of temperature, P(H2 ), catalyst loading on the product yield, and for the selection of the composite possessing the highest performance. It was found that 3% Ni loading was the most optimal. This composite was used as an efficient catalyst for the hydrogenation of compounds with ethylene and acetylene bonds, nitro- and keto- groups as well as a series of substituted quinolines and analogs. The studied composites can be proposed as air-stable and efficient catalysts for the hydrogenation of a wide range of organic compounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
