Objective: In this study, we examined whether there was a change in the number of children who had been screened by hip ultrasound, the age of first diagnosis, and the number of invasive and conservative treatments applied due to developmental dysplasia of the hip between 2016 and 2022 among refugees who were in "Temporary Protection Status" in Türkiye? Methods: The records were collected via the e-health database of the Turkish Ministry of Health. Over 1 month old were included in the study. Results: The number of ultrasonography (USG) that was performed for developmental dysplasia of the hip survey had significantly increased over time. The incidence for 5 years was 6 cases per 100 babies. However, the incidence of developmental dysplasia of the hip needing intervention was 0.4 cases per 1000 babies. In 2016, the most used diagnosis method was X-ray. By contrast, the use of USG has increased from 2016 to 2022. The mean age at the time of diagnosis was significantly high in 2016, 2017, and 2020. The number of invasive treatment modalities including closed reduction under anesthesia, open reduction alone, or open reduction with pelvic and/or femoral osteotomies had significantly decreased from 2016 to 2022. However, the number of abduction orthosis used for treatment also increased significantly. Conclusions: Free access to health services is effective in promoting families' compliance with screening programs for developmental dysplasia of the hip. But is not enough for initial periods of mass migrations. To increase sensitivity to screening programs for possible diseases, further efforts are needed to prevent low compliance in early cases of mass migrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of parainfluenza 3 (PI3) virus antigen through histopathological and immunohistochemical (IHC) methods in sheep lung samples collected from Erzurum province, Türkiye. Between August and November 2017, 1462 sheep were dissected in the slaughterhouse and their lungs were examined macroscopically. In total, 100 of the lung samples with pneumonia were selected. Routine histopathological and IHC analyses of the collected lung tissues with pneumonia were performed. Pneumonia observed through macroscopical and histopathological examinations of the lung samples was classified as purulent-catarrhal bronchopneumonia (14.00%), fibrinous bronchopneumonia (23.00%), interstitial pneumonia (69.00%), granulomatous pneumonia (7.00%), verminous pneumonia (19.00%) and pulmonary adenomatosis (6.00%). Two or three types of pneumonia were observed in many of the same cases. The PI3 virus antigen positivity rate in the IHC analysis of sheep lung samples was 19.00%. In the IHC tracing, positivities were found mostly in the alveolar macrophages and cytoplasm of bronchial, bronchiolar and alveolar epithelial cells. As a result, the prevalence of PI3 virus in sheep in Erzurum province, Türkiye, was determined to be 19.00% using KLN BVB IHC method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, it was aimed to examine Canine Herpesvirus-1 (CHV-1) with different diagnostic methods and investigate the pathological changes in positive samples. For this purpose, 100 dog uteruses of different ages and breeds, were removed by ovariohysterectomy and their blood samples were used as the study material. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT) for serological diagnosis, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for molecular diagnosis, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence (IF) staining for immunopathological diagnosis were performed on the samples. Additionally, hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining was performed to examine the histopathological changes in the CHV-1-positive samples. An antibody presence rate of 37% was detected by both ELISA and IFAT tests. The immunohistochemical and immunofluorescent staining results revealed the presence of antigens at rates of 33% and 35%, respectively. No positivity was recorded in any of the samples by the PCR method. In the histopathological examinations of the CHV-1-positive uterus samples, it was observed that 12 had catarrhal endometritis, 10 had purulent endometritis, 8 had chronic nonpurulent endometritis and 7 were healthy. No lesions were found in the other 63 samples that were not CHV-1 positive. In conclusion, it was determined that the best methods for the diagnosis of CHV-1 infection were ELISA and IFAT, followed by immunofluorescence and immunohistochemical staining. The positive samples mostly showed catarrhal endometritis, and the presence of the virus was also detected in healthy tissues. In this study, the prevalence of CHV-1 in dogs was determined for the first time with a variety of diagnostic methods, and histopathological changes in naturally infected specimens were investigated. Sepsis is one of the major problems encountered in intensive care units, causing organ damage and increasing mortality. Suberosin (SBR) is a type of coumarin with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The goal of this study is to explore the protective effects of SBR on the lungs in a rat model of sepsis. Male Wistar rats were utilized in this study. A cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model was applied to induce sepsis. Rats were separated into six groups with nine animals in each group, including healthy control, SBR, CLP, and CLP + SBR (5, 10, and 20 mg/kg) groups. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH) enzyme activities, and malondialdehyde (MDA) level were measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The messenger RNA (mRNA) expressions of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin 1β (IL-1β) were evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Histopathological changes in the lungs were investigated with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). MDA levels and GSH and SOD enzyme activities were negatively affected in the CLP group, but SBR treatment ameliorated these oxidative stress parameters in the SBR1-3 groups (p< 0.05). The mRNA expressions of TNF-α and IL-1β were increased in the CLP group, and SBR treatment decreased those expression levels in a dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05). Organ damage and necrosis were seen in the CLP group and were alleviated in the SBR3 group. Immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis of lung tissues demonstrated decreased TNF-α and IL-1β immunopositivity in the SBR1-3 groups (p< 0.05). Objective. Reveal adenoviruses (AdV) that cause pneumonia in sheep and examine pathologic changes in the pulmonary and mediastinal lymph nodes of naturally infected adenovirus-positive specimens. Material and methods. For this purpose, 1459 lungs of sheep slaughtered in a slaughterhouse were macroscopically examined, and pneumonia lesions were detected in 88 (6.03%) of these. The paraffinized tissue sections of these specimens with pneumonia were examined with the immunohistochemical (IHC) and indirect immunofluorescence (IF) methods, whereas their tissue homogenates were examined using the Antigen ELISA and PCR methods for adenovirus positivity. Results. Accordingly, the prevalence of adenoviruses was determined as 19.3% for IHC, 22.7% for IF, 20.5% for ELISA and 13.6% for PCR. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining was performed to examine histopathological changes in the specimens that were naturally infected with adenoviruses. The histopathological examinations of the naturally infected lung specimens revealed mainly interstitial pneumonia, as well as catarrhal and verminous pneumonia findings. Consequently, it was determined that the most effective methods in the detection of adenoviruses in sheep pneumonias were found respectively as IF, ELISA, IHC and PCR. The finding that adenoviruses were observed only in the mediastinal lymph nodes of some specimens in the immunopathological methods suggested that the latency. Conclusions. The presence of adenoviruses in sheep pneumonia cases was determined with the indirect immunofluorescence, antigen ELISA and PCR methods for the first time. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease common in the world and in our country. The disease affects people as well as cattle, sheep, cats, dogs, and other domestic animals. In the disease, which causes serious health problems in humans and significant economic losses in animals, some living things spread the disease without showing any clinical symptoms, although they are causative agents in their bodies. For this reason, it is important to constantly investigate the disease in different animal species. There are many studies on the disease in humans and animals worldwide. In Turkey, most of the studies are serological, but immunohistochemical studies were also conducted in different animal species. Although there have been studies on cattle and sheep abortions with immunohistochemical methods in the Erzurum region, where the study samples were provided for the diagnosis of the disease, no study was found in dogs. This study was aimed to determine the presence and localization of Leptospira interrogans (L. İnterrogans) antigens in testicular tissue samples of naturally infected dogs with immunohistochemical methods. In the study, 30 dog testicular tissue samples collected without looking for macroscopic lesions were examined using the immunohistochemical method. As a result of the examination, 26.66% (8) L. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in the healing of experimentally created unicortical defect (UCD) of rat femurs. Twenty-four adult Wister rats were randomly divided into 2 groups: UCD and UCD+LLLT. The animals were subdivided into 3 groups (each group had 4 animals) and then they sacrificed at day 8, 15 and 22 for radiological, pathological and biochemical analysis. Bone healing was significantly different between the groups at day 15 and 22 (P < 0.05), while bone formation was significantly increased in the UCD+LLLT group at day 22 compared to the UCD group (P < 0.05). On histopathological examination, significant difference was found between the UCD and UCD+LLLT groups on the 22nd day (P < 0.05) while there was no difference on the 8th and 15th day. In the UCD group, the plasma Alkaline phosphatase activity decreased on the 15th and 22nd days, Calcium on the 15th day and Phosphorus on the 8th and 22nd days compared to the UCD+LLLT group. In addition, Glutathione levels, Plasma Catalase, Glutathione Peroxidase and Superoxide Dismutase activity significantly reduced in the UCD group compared with UCD+LLLT on the 8th, 15th and 22nd day (P < 0.05). In conclusion, LLLT applied at a dose of 904µm accelerates fracture healing in UCD of a rat's femur. However, this effect shows an increase after the 22nd day of LLLT application. Objective: Pathological fractures are among the most common complications of malign neoplasms. The femur is the most frequently involved bone following spinal metastasis. This study retrospectively analyzed patients who had been surgically treated for proximal femur metastasis and aimed to determine the factors that affect survival rates. Methods: This is an IRB approved, retrospective review of all patients diagnosed with pathological fractures due to proximal femur metastasis and treated surgically in a single institution from 2004 to 2012. The Karnovsky scoring system was also used to evaluate functionality. Statistical comparisons were made by forming patient subgroups based on the existence of a primary diagnosis, the surgical method selected, and the existence of complications. The analyses attempted to recognize the factors that affect mortality. Results: Our review of the archives showed that a total of 34 patients (20 female; 14 male). Mean patient age was 59.3±13.8. The primary tumor was already diagnosed in 27 patients on admission. Pathological fractures seemed to occur at an average of 53.4 (±44.5) months after primary diagnosis. Long-stemmed cemented arthroplasty was used in 15 patients and IM nail was used in 19 patients. Patients with IM nail were mobilized significantly earlier and hospitalization was shorter respectively (p=0.04, p=0.006). The need for a second surgical operation was statistically similar in the two groups (p=0.24). After an approximate follow-up of 26.5±21.9 months, the average Karnovsky score was similar (54.1 vs. 48.3; p=0.07). The patients who did not have a second skeletal system metastasis or other organ metastasis survived significantly longer (24.7 vs. 11.3; p=0.02). Conclusıons: Shorter hospitalization and earlier mobilization can be in patients who were treated with an IM nail. Higher survival is expected for patients who do not have distant organ or skeletal system metastases at the time of surgically treating pathological fractures. Objective: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common cause of elbow stiffness following surgical treatment of elbow trauma. In this study, our aim was to evaluate the mid-term functional outcomes of open surgical procedures for HO. Methods: In this retrospective study approved by the institutional review board (IRB), all patients who were diagnosed as having stiff elbow due to HO and underwent surgical resection at a single institution from 2006 to 2013 were included. Intrinsic (inside the joint) pathologies were excluded. Range of motion (ROM) in sagittal and coronal planes, complications, functional scores such as Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Score (Q-DASH), and Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) were evaluated before and after surgery. Results: There were 19 patients (16 males, 3 females) with a mean age of 38.6 (range 15-69) years. At an average follow-up of 36±8 months, the mean flexion-extension arc was improved from 27.4° to 99.2° (p<0.001) and mean supination-pronation arc was improved from 48.9° to 102.3° (p<0.001). The mean Q-DASH score was decreased from 68.2 to 17.1 (p<0.001) and mean MEPS was improved from 37.5 to 85.6 (p<0.001). Conclusion: Excision of heterotopic bone and releasing contracted tissues around elbow can provide a substantial increase in range of motion and improvement in clinical scores. This study was conducted to detect the prevalence and presence of bovine herpesvirus-1 (BoHV-1) using immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF) and antigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in the lung samples of cattle (n = 1023). In addition, three methods were compared using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and chi-square test (χ2 test), and their usability were evaluated in laboratory conditions. Macroscopically, pneumonia was seen in 120 of the lung tissue samples (11.73%). Based on the microscopic examinations, the pneumonia types were classified as catarrhal-suppurative bronchopneumonia (6.7%), fibrinous bronchopneumonia (5%), interstitial pneumonia (84.1%), and granulomatous pneumonia (4.2%). The IHC, IF and antigen ELISA positivity were 48.33%, 50.83%, and 29.9%, respectively. Considering IF as a gold standard, IHC had more acceptable sensitivity and specificity than antigen ELISA. In conclusion, it has been observed that when IF method is not available, IHC is more reliable than antigen ELISA in the diagnosis of BoHV-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to investigate immunohistochemically the presence and the prevalence of Parainfluenza- 3 (PI-3) in the lungs of cattle breeding in the Erzurum region. For this aim, the lung samples of 600 cattle slaughtered in abattoirs in Erzurum province were examined by collecting and pneumonia was macroscopically observed in 75 (12.5%) lung samples. 58 interstitial pneumonia, 10 broncho-interstitial pneumonia, 2 catarrhal pneumonia, 2 fibrinous pneumonia, and 3 granulomatous pneumonia were observed in the histopathological evaluation of these lungs examined macroscopically. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to pneumonia detected lung sections in terms of PI-3 virus and immunopositivity was detected in 7 (9.33%) lung samples. Immunopositivity was observed in 6 (10.34%) interstitial pneumonia and 1 (10%) broncho-interstitial pneumonia in lung samples. Immunopositivity in the lungs which were positive for PI-3 viral antigens was found in the cytoplasm of bronchi and bronchioles epithelium, in inflammation cells in bronchusassociated lymphoid tissue (BALT) around bronchioles, in the alveoli, in the macrophages in the interstitial area. Furthermore, these positivities were observed in the inflammatory exudate in the bronchial lumen in the broncho-interstitial pneumonia lung samples. In conclusion, it was determined that the presence of PI-3 viral antigens has an important place in agents which occur pneumonia in cattle in Erzurum region and it is thought that this agent should not be ignored in the protection and treatment methods against the bovine respiratory disease complex. Objective(s): : In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic effects of casticin and myricetin on liver damage induced by methotrexate in rats. Materials and Methods: Thirty-six male rats were used for the study and divided into 6 groups: control, methotrexate, casticin, myricetin, casticin+methotrexate, and myricetin+methotrexate. It was performed by methotrexate (20 mg/kg single dose, IP) in methotrexate, casticin+methotrexate and myricetin+methotrexate groups. Casticin 200 mg/kg dose was given to casticin and casticin+methotrexate groups. Myricetin 50 mg/kg dose was given to myricetin and myriceytin+methotrexate groups. At the end of the experiment, liver tissues were removed for the purpose of histopathological, biochemical and immunohistochemical assessments. Results: In our study, we have detected that MDA levels increased and activities of antioxidant enzymes SOD, CAT, and GPX decreased in the methotrexate group compared to the other groups, but the level of MDA decreased and activities of these enzymes increased in casticin+methotrexate and myricetin+methotrexate groups compared to the methotrexate group. In immunohistochemical examinations of control, casticin and myricetin groups in liver tissues no caspase-3 and 8-OHdG expressions were observed. In the MTX group, caspase-3 and 8-OHdG expressions were seen at the severe levels. Caspase-3 and 8-OHdG expressions were mild in hepatocytes in the casticin+methotrexate and myricetin+methotrexate groups. When the liver tissues of the rats in the methotrexate group were examined, severe pathological damage was detected both in the parietal region and in the portal region. Conclusion: By looking at these results, we can say that casticin and myricetin are effective against liver damage induced by methotrexate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The rate of spontaneous normalization in type IIa hips is reported to be high, whereas dysplsia persists or worsens in 5%- 10% of cases. Aims: To evaluate the natural course of type IIa hips using Graf's own perspective of physiological immaturity and maturational deficit. Study Design: A single center, retrospective cohort study. Methods: This was an institutional review board-approved retrospective review of all patients diagnosed with type IIa hip dysplasia at a single institution from 2012 to 2014. All patients included in the study had hip ultrasonography at about 6 weeks and 3 months of age. To assess reliability in α and β angles, ultrasonography measurements were carried out on the same image individually by all observers. The α and β angles were used as the main outcome measurements to evaluate hip maturation at the last follow-up. A receiver operating characteristics curve was drawn at the 3 month ultrasonography to evaluate the cut-off values for α and β angles for persistent dysplasia. Results: Sixty-four patients and 88 affected hips (63% unilateral and 37% bilateral) were included. The mean age at diagnosis was 6.4±2.7 weeks. Fifty-four hips were type IIa(+) (physiologically immature) and 34 hips were type IIa(-) (maturational deficit) at the initial ultrasonography evaluation. Improvement to type I was seen in 52 type IIa(+) and 17 type IIa(-) hips. Receiver operating characteristic analyses showed that patients do well if the α angle was >55° (area under the curve: 0.86; p<0.001 for the left hip and area under the curve: 0.72; p=0.008 for the right hip). Conclusion: The cut-off α angle value of 55° on initial ultrasonography should be considered to prevent future dysplasia. Introduction The rare Nievergelt syndrome (NS) is the most severe form of mesomelic dysplasia and is characterized by disproportionate shortness of the limbs. The aim of this case report was to describe the clinical and radiological features of a rare case of NS. Presentation of case Here we describe a female patient originally presenting with bilateral hand, lower leg, and foot deformities at the age of 10 years old. In addition to the characteristic features of NS, this patient presented with finger-like projections on her heels, bilateral hand anomalies, and atypical facial features. She underwent concomitant bilateral tibial lengthening and deformity correction using external fixators due to severe bilateral lower leg deformities with shortness. At 10 years of age, this patient was able to walk independently with significant improvement in her ambulation. Discussion There is a clear gap in the literature regarding the orthopedic management of mesomelic limb deformities due to NS. No studies have been designed to illustrate surgical planning in the management of orthopedic deformities in this rare syndrome. Conclusion Limb lengthening and deformity correction using an external fixator can be considered as a salvage method or alternative to amputation for patients with severe mesomelic limb deformities due to NS. Introduction The main goal of the treatment is the anatomical reduction of the ulna fracture and the radial head dislocation in acute and chronic Monteggia cases. Acute pediatric Monteggia lesions are generally treated non-surgically; however, the treatment of chronic Monteggia is challenging. The aim of this article is to share our experiences about treatment of neglected Monteggia lesion. Presentation of case A 6-year-old girl who underwent a surgery in our clinic for a missed Bado type-III Monteggia fracture-dislocation of the right elbow with concomitant posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) palsy, which resolved spontaneously after the operation. The operation consisted of open reduction of the radial head, transverse ulnar osteotomy and fixation with an intramedullary Kirchner wire, and annular ligament repair without exploring PIN. The patient was seen in routine follow-up periods until the postoperative first year using plain radiographies. At 16th week follow-up, all functions of the PIN were returned. At first-year follow-up, full range of elbow motion was observed; plain radiographies showed radiocapitellar joint congruency, and Mayo Elbow Performance Index was one hundred. Discussion Treatment planning for chronic, neglected or missed Monteggia fractures is challenging. There is no consensus about the definitive treatment in the literature. Conclusion We recommend anatomic and stable restoration of radiocapitellar joint by correcting ulna deformity. Radiocapitellar fixation and PIN exploration may not be necessary in all neglected Monteggia lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, It was aimed to investigate the pathological findings of liver in sheep slaughtered in Erzurum. For this purpose, 243 sheep livers were macroscopically examined and of the lesion seen in the sheep liver has created 60 (24.69%) pieces. The selected liver samples from the routine histopathological follow-up were performed and provided preparations were examined. After the examination of the livers having lesions, circulatory disorders (hyperemia and congestion) 20% pigment to 3.33%, liver degeneration to 53.33%, necrosis to 31.67% and fibrosis to 26.67% percent have been found. Samples of the liver lesions 21.67% kolongiohepatitis and 10% in abscesses were found. Parasitic infection in 44 organs (73.33%) were observed in 26 of these infections (43.33%) hydatid cysts were detected. In one of samples fibrosarcoma was diagnosed. In conclusion, animals the care and feeding conditions, the diversity of the show, animal shelter, hygienic lack of veterinary services, the inadequacy of factors such as the animals against infection unprotected, making the liver in the various forms and distribution of disease lesions to be seen to be caused was concluded and the pathological findings was determined of liver in sheep.
