ABSTRACT: The objectives of this retrospective observational study were to investigate the association between BCS at 21 d before calving with prepartum and postpartum DMI, energy balance (EB), and milk yield. Data from 427 multigravid cows from 11 different experiments conducted at the University of Florida (Gainesville, FL) were used. Cows were classified according to their BCS at 21 d before calving as fat (BCS ≥ 4.00; n = 83), moderate (BCS = 3.25–3.75; n = 287), and thin (BCS ≤ 3.00; n = 57). Daily DMI from −21 to −1 and from +1 to +28 DIM was individually recorded. Energy balance was calculated as the difference between net energy for lactation consumed and required. Dry matter intake in fat cows was lower than that in moderate and thin cows both prepartum (fat = 9.97 ± 0.21, moderate = 11.15 ± 0.14, and thin = 11.92 ± 0.22 kg/d) and postpartum (fat = 14.35 ± 0.49, moderate = 15.47 ± 0.38, and thin = 16.09 ± 0.47 kg/d). Dry matter intake was also lower for moderate cows compared with thin cows prepartum, but not postpartum. Energy balance in fat cows was lower than in moderate and thin cows both prepartum (fat = −4.16 ± 0.61, moderate = −1.20 ± 0.56, and thin = 0.88 ± 0.62 Mcal/d) and postpartum (fat = −12.77 ± 0.50, moderate = −10.13 ± 0.29, and thin = −6.14 ± 0.51 Mcal/d). Energy balance was also lower for moderate cows compared with thin cows both prepartum and postpartum. There was a quadratic association between BCS at 21 d before calving and milk yield. Increasing BCS from 2.5 to 3.5 was associated with an increase in daily milk yield of 6.0 kg and 28 d cumulative milk of 147 kg. Increasing BCS from 3.5 to 4.5 was associated with a decrease in daily milk yield of 4.4 kg and 28 d cumulative milk of 116 kg. In summary, a moderate BCS at 21 d before calving was associated with intermediate DMI and EB pre- and postpartum but greater milk yield compared with thinner and fatter cows. Our findings indicate that a moderate BCS is ideal for ensuring a successful lactation.

There are growing concerns about the climate impacts of absorbing organic carbon (also known as brown carbon, BrC) in the environment, yet its chemical composition and association with the light absorption capabilities remain poorly understood. This study characterized water-soluble and water-insoluble organic carbon (WSOC and WIOC) from residential solid fuel combustion at the molecular level and evaluated their quantitative relationship with mass absorption efficiency (MAE). The MAE values at λ = 365 nm from biomass burning were significantly higher than those from coal combustion (p < 0.05). Thousands of peaks were identified in the m/z range of 150–800, with the most intense ion peaks occurring between m/z 200–500 for WSOC and m/z 600–800 for WIOC, respectively. The CHO group predominated in the WSOC extract from biomass burning emissions, while sulfur-containing compounds (SOCs) including CHOS and CHONS were more intense in the WIOC extract, particularly from coal emissions. Emissions of the CHON group were positively correlated with the fuel nitrogen content (r = 0.936; p < 0.05), explaining their higher abundance in coal emissions compared to biomass. The SOC emissions were more predominant during flaming phases, as indicated by a positive correlation with modified combustion efficiency (MCE) (r = 0.750; p < 0.05). The unique formulas of coal combustion aerosols were in the lower H/C and O/C regions, with higher unsaturated compounds in the van Krevelen (VK) diagram. In the WIOC extract, coal combustion emissions contained significantly higher fractions of condensed aromatics (32 %–59 %) compared to only 4.3 %–9.7 % in biomass burning emissions. In contrast, the CHOS group in biomass burning emissions was characterized by larger condensed aromatic compound fractions than those in coal combustion. Moreover, the CHOS aromatic compound fractions were positively correlated with MAE values in both WSOC (r = 0.714; p < 0.05) and WIOC extracts (r = 0.929; p < 0.001), suggesting that these compounds significantly contributed to MAE variabilities across different fuels.

Associations between tropospheric ozone (O3) and climate variations have been extensively investigated worldwide. However, given the lack of historical O3 monitoring data, the knowledge gaps regarding the influences of climate variations on long-term O3 trends in China remain. The present study used a tropospheric O3 dataset from the summers of 1999 to 2017 simulated by an atmospheric chemistry model to explore the linkage between summer O3 and a dominant atmospheric circulation system – the Western Pacific Subtropical High (WPSH) pressure – on an interannual basis in China. During this period, both WPSH strength and O3 concentrations in eastern and central China illustrated a growing trend. An EOF analysis was conducted to examine significant summer O3 characteristics and patterns and their potential connections with the WPSH. We find that the correlation between the first principal component of summer ozone concentration in the EOF analysis and the WPSH reached 0.56 (P≤0.01) in China from 1999 to 2017. We show that the WPSH determines interannual fluctuations of summer O3, whereas O3 precursor emissions contribute primarily to the O3 long-term trend. Our results reveal that the WPSH plays a vital role in O3 perturbation in the eastern seaboard regions and inland China. Precursor emissions made more significant contributions of up to 60 % to increasing O3 trends in the inland urban agglomerations than coastal regions in eastern and southern China. The strongest contribution of meteorological conditions associated with the WPSH to summer O3 occurred in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), accounting for over 9 % to ozone perturbations from 1999 to 2017. We find that the effect of the WPSH on regional O3 depends on the spatial proximity to the WPSH. We attributed the effects of the WPSH on O3 interannual variations to the changes in air temperature, precipitation, and winds associated with the WPSH's intensity and positions.

Against the background of wind-forcing change along with Arctic sea ice retreat, the mesoscale processes undergoing distinct variation in the Beaufort Gyre (BG) region are increasingly important to oceanic transport and energy cascades, and these changes subsequently put oceanic stratification into a new state. Here, the varying number and strength of eddies in the central Canada Basin (CB) and Chukchi–Beaufort continental slope are obtained based on mooring observations (2003–2018), altimetry measurements (1993–2019), and reanalysis data (1980–2020). In this paper, the variability in the BG halocline, representing the adjustment of stratification in the upper layer, is shown in order to analyse how variability occurs under changing mesoscale processes. We find that over almost the last 2 decades the halocline depth has deepened by ∼ 40 m in the south of the central gyre, while that in the north has deepened by ∼ 70 m according to multiple datasets. Surrounding the central gyre, the asymmetry of the halocline, with much steeper and deeper isopycnals over the southern continental slope, reduced after 2014. In the meantime, eddy activities in the upper layer from the southern margin of the BG to the abyssal plain have been enhanced. Moreover, the convergence of the eddy lateral flux has increased as the halocline structures on either side, which is at least 120 km from the central gyre, have reached a nearly identical and stable regime. It has been clarified that long-term dynamic eddy modulation through eddy fluxes, facilitating the freshwater redistribution, affects the meridional asymmetry of the BG halocline. Our results provide a better understanding of the eddy modulation processes and their influence on the halocline structure.

ABSTRACT: To examine the effects of evaporative cooling on systemic and mammary inflammation of lactating dairy cows, 30 multiparous Holstein cows (parity = 2.4, 156 d in milk) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: cooling (CL) with fans and misters or not (NC). The experiment was divided into a 10-d baseline when all cows were cooled, followed by a 36-d environmental challenge when cooling was terminated for NC cows. The onset of environmental challenge was considered as d 1. Temperature-humidity index averaged 78.4 during the environmental challenge. Milk yield and dry matter intake (DMI) were recorded daily. Blood and milk samples were collected from a subset of cows (n = 9/treatment) on d −3, 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 of the experiment to measure cortisol, interleukin 10 (IL10), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), haptoglobin, and lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP). Mammary biopsies were collected from a second subset of cows (n = 6/treatment) on d −9, 2, 10, and 36 to analyze gene expression of cytokines and haptoglobin. A subset of cows (n = 7/treatment) who were not subjected to mammary biopsy collection received a bolus of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in the left rear quarter on d 30 of the experiment. Blood was sampled from cows and milk samples from the LPS-infused quarter were collected at −4, 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 96 h relative to infusion, for analyses of inflammatory products. Deprivation of cooling decreased milk yield and DMI. Compared with CL cows, plasma cortisol concentration of NC cows was higher on d 1 but lower on d 28 of the experiment (cooling × time). Deprivation of cooling did not affect circulating TNF-α, IL10, haptoglobin, or LBP. Compared with CL cows, NC cows tended to have higher milk IL10 concentrations but did not show effects in TNF-α, haptoglobin, or LBP. No differences were observed in mammary tissue gene expression of TNF-α, IL10, and haptoglobin. Milk yield declined after LPS infusion but was not affected by treatment. Compared with CL cows, NC cows had greater milk somatic cell count following intramammary LPS infusion. Non-cooled cows had lower circulating TNF-α and IL10 concentrations and tended to have lower circulating haptoglobin concentrations than CL cows. Milk IL10 and TNF-⍺ concentrations were higher 3 h after LPS infusion for NC cows compared with CL cows. Additionally, NC cows tended to have higher milk haptoglobin concentration after LPS infusion than CL cows. In conclusion, deprivation of evaporative cooling had minimal effects on lactating cows' basal inflammatory status, but upregulated mammary inflammatory responses after intramammary LPS infusion.

Abstract Background High-grade serous ovarian cancers (HGSCs) display a high degree of complex genetic alterations. In this study, we identified germline and somatic genetic alterations in HGSC and their association with relapse-free and overall survival. Using a targeted capture of 557 genes involved in DNA damage response and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathways, we conducted next-generation sequencing of DNA from matched blood and tumor tissue from 71 HGSC participants. In addition, we performed the OncoScan assay on tumor DNA from 61 participants to examine somatic copy number alterations (SCNA). Results Approximately one-third of tumors had loss-of-function (LOF) germline (18/71, 25.4%) or somatic (7/71, 9.9%) variants in the DNA homologous recombination repair pathway genes BRCA1, BRCA2, CHEK2, MRE11A, BLM, and PALB2. LOF germline variants also were identified in other Fanconi anemia genes and in MAPK and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway genes. Most tumors harbored somatic TP53 variants (65/71, 91.5%). Using the OncoScan assay on tumor DNA from 61 participants, we identified focal homozygous deletions in BRCA1, BRCA2, MAP2K4, PTEN, RB1, SLX4, STK11, CREBBP, and NF1. In total, 38% (27/71) of HGSC patients harbored pathogenic variants in DNA homologous recombination repair genes. For patients with multiple tissues from the primary debulking or from multiple surgeries, the somatic mutations were maintained with few newly acquired point mutations suggesting that tumor evolution was not through somatic mutations. There was a significant association of LOF variants in homologous recombination repair pathway genes and high-amplitude somatic copy number alterations. Using GISTIC analysis, we identified NOTCH3, ZNF536, and PIK3R2 in these regions that were significantly associated with an increase in cancer recurrence and a reduction in overall survival. Conclusions From 71 patients with HGCS, we performed targeted germline and tumor sequencing and provided a comprehensive analysis of these 557 genes. We identified germline and somatic genetic alterations including somatic copy number alterations and analyzed their associations with relapse-free and overall survival. This single-site long-term follow-up study provides additional information on genetic alterations related to occurrence and outcome of HGSC. Our findings suggest that targeted treatments based on both variant and SCNA profile potentially could improve relapse-free and overall survival.

Reactive organic gases (ROGs), as important precursors of secondary pollutants, are not well resolved as their chemical complexity has challenged their quantification in many studies. Here, a near-complete speciation of ROG emissions from residential combustion was developed by the combination of proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) with a gas chromatography system equipped with a mass spectrometer and a flame ionization detector (GC-MS/FID), including 1049 species in all. Among them, 125 identified species, ∼ 90 % of the total ROG masses, were applied to evaluate their emission characteristics through real combustion samplings in rural households of China. The study revealed that with 55 species, mainly oxygenated species, higher hydrocarbons with ≥8 carbon atoms, and nitrogen-containing species, previously un- and under-characterized, ROG emissions from residential coal and biomass combustion were underestimated by 44.3 % ± 11.8 % and 22.7 % ± 3.9 %, respectively, which further amplified the underestimation of secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAP) as high as 70.3 % ± 1.6 % and 89.2 % ± 1.0 %, respectively. The hydroxyl radical reactivity (OHR) of ROG emissions was also undervalued significantly. The study provided a feasible method for the near-complete speciation of ROGs in the atmosphere and highlighted the importance of acquiring completely speciated measurement of ROGs from residential emissions, as well as other processes.

Satellite radar backscatter contains unique information on land surface moisture, vegetation features, and surface roughness and has thus been used in a range of Earth science disciplines. However, there is no single global radar data set that has a relatively long wavelength and a decades-long time span. We here provide the first long-term (since 1992), high-resolution (∼8.9 km instead of the commonly used ∼25 km resolution) monthly satellite radar backscatter data set over global land areas, called the long-term, high-resolution scatterometer (LHScat) data set, by fusing signals from the European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS; 1992–2001; C-band; 5.3 GHz), Quick Scatterometer (QSCAT, 1999–2009; Ku-band; 13.4 GHz), and the Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT; since 2007; C-band; 5.255 GHz). The 6-year data gap between C-band ERS and ASCAT was filled by modelling a substitute C-band signal during 1999–2009 from Ku-band QSCAT signals and climatic information. To this end, we first rescaled the signals from different sensors, pixel by pixel. We then corrected the monthly signal differences between the C-band and the scaled Ku-band signals by modelling the signal differences from climatic variables (i.e. monthly precipitation, skin temperature, and snow depth) using decision tree regression. The quality of the merged radar signal was assessed by computing the Pearson r, root mean square error (RMSE), and relative RMSE (rRMSE) between the C-band and the corrected Ku-band signals in the overlapping years (1999–2001 and 2007–2009). We obtained high Pearson r values and low RMSE values at both the regional (r≥0.92, RMSE ≤ 0.11 dB, and rRMSE ≤ 0.38) and pixel levels (median r across pixels ≥ 0.64, median RMSE ≤ 0.34 dB, and median rRMSE ≤ 0.88), suggesting high accuracy for the data-merging procedure. The merged radar signals were then validated against the European Space Agency (ESA) ERS-2 data, which provide observations for a subset of global pixels until 2011, even after the failure of on-board gyroscopes in 2001. We found highly concordant monthly dynamics between the merged radar signals and the ESA ERS-2 signals, with regional Pearson r values ranging from 0.79 to 0.98. These results showed that our merged radar data have a consistent C-band signal dynamic. The LHScat data set (https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.20407857; Tao et al., 2023) is expected to advance our understanding of the long-term changes in, e.g., global vegetation and soil moisture with a high spatial resolution. The data set will be updated on a regular basis to include the latest images acquired by ASCAT and to include even higher spatial and temporal resolutions.

This study aims to generate a spatially complete planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) product over the contiguous United States (CONUS). An eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) regression model was developed using selected meteorological and geographical data fields as explanatory variables to fit the PBLH values derived from Aircraft Meteorological DAta Relay (AMDAR) reports hourly profiles at 13:00–14:00 LST (local solar time) during 2005–2019. A preprocessing step was implemented to exclude AMDAR data points that were unexplainable by the predictors, mostly under stable conditions. The PBLH prediction by this work as well as PBLHs from three reanalysis datasets (the fifth-generation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts atmospheric reanalysis of the global climate – ERA5; the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 – MERRA-2; and the North American Regional Reanalysis – NARR) were compared to reference PBLH observations from spaceborne lidar (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations, CALIPSO), airborne lidar (High Spectral Resolution Lidar, HSRL), and in situ research aircraft profiles from the Deriving Information on Surface Conditions from Column and Vertically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality (DISCOVER-AQ) campaigns. Compared with PBLHs from reanalysis products, the PBLH prediction from this work shows closer agreement with the reference observations, with the caveat that different PBLH products and estimates have different ways of identifying the PBLH; thus, their comparisons should be interpreted with caution. The reanalysis products show significant high biases in the western CONUS relative to the reference observations. One direct application of the dataset generated by this work is that it enables sampling of the PBLH at the sounding locations and times of sensors aboard satellites with an overpass time in the early afternoon, e.g., the Afternoon Train (A-train), the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP), the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS), and the Sentinel-5 Precursor (Sentinel-5P) satellite sensors. As both AMDAR and ERA5 are continuous at hourly resolution, the observational-data-driven PBLHs may be extended to other daytime hours.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are nowadays mainly unintentionally produced, since their use and manufacture has been banned. PCBs, especially those dioxin-like compounds, have been proven harmful to ecosystems and human health. Detailed information about the spatiotemporally distribution of unintentionally produced PCBs (UP-PCBs) is crucial for understanding the environmental fate and associated health risks. However, research estimating UP-PCBs emission in China is limited. In this study, a source-specific and year-varying emission factor (EF) dataset was used to compile provincial emissions of 12 dioxin-like UP-PCBs congeners for 66 sources in the Chinese mainland from 1960 to 2019. In addition to that, emissions for 2019 were allocated into 0.1∘×0.1∘ grids. The results indicated that historical national UP-PCBs emission represented an increasing trend until around 1995 and then showed an overall decreasing trend from 1995 to 2019. Cement production was the largest UP-PCBs emission source in the Chinese mainland. Geographically, East and North China contributed the largest UP-PCBs emission across the Chinese mainland. High emission densities occurred mainly in the densely populated and well-developed regions such as Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration and Pearl River Delta. Furthermore, highly positive correlations of emission densities with population and GDP densities were identified.

ABSTRACT: Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation products are commonly used in dairy cattle ration to improve production efficiency and health. However, whether these benefits will persist during feed-restriction-induced negative energy balance is unknown. The objective of this experiment was to examine the effect of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product (NT, NutriTek, Diamond V) on performance, metabolic, inflammatory, and immunological responses to a feed-restriction challenge in mid-lactation dairy cows. Sixty Holstein cows were blocked by parity, days in milk, and milk yield and then randomly assigned to 1 of the 2 supplements: NT or placebo (CTL). The supplements were mixed in total mixed ration before feeding at a rate of 19 g/d per cow. The production phase of the experiment lasted 12 wk. Intake and milk yield were recorded daily, and milk composition was measured weekly. After the production trial, a subset of cows (NT: n = 16; CTL: n = 16) were immediately enrolled in a 5-d feed-restriction challenge with 40% ad libitum intake followed by a 5-d realimentation. Milk yield and composition were measured at each milking from d −2 to 10 relative to feed restriction. Blood samples were collected on d −2, −1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 relative to the initiation of feed restriction to measure circulating metabolites, insulin, cortisol, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-α, lipopolysaccharide binding protein, and haptoglobin. Immune function assessments, including peripheral mononuclear cell proliferation and functional assays of circulating granulocytes, were performed on d −3 and 4 of the feed restriction. No differences were observed in dry matter intake, milk yield, or concentrations or yield of components except for fat yield. An interaction of parity and treatment was observed for milk fat yield that was lower for CTL than NT in primiparous cows, but no differences were observed among treatments in milk fat yield of multiparous cows. Feed restriction successfully induced negative energy balance and its associated metabolic changes, including reduced concentrations of plasma glucose and increased nonesterified fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyrate. Cows fed NT had a similar decrease in milk yield but had a more pronounced reduction in plasma glucose concentration and greater β-hydroxybutyrate concentration during feed restriction than those fed CTL. Feed restriction did not induce evidence of systemic inflammation but did reduce granulocyte functional activity. Compared with CTL, feeding NT improved the reactive oxygen species production by granulocytes after stimulation by extracellular antigens. In conclusion, feeding NT increased milk fat production of first-lactation cows but did not affect overall productive performance. However, supplementation with NT improved induced granulocyte oxidative burst. This may explain the greater glucose utilization by cows fed NT rather than CTL during feed restriction.

Aerosol acidity plays a key role in regulating the chemistry and toxicity of atmospheric aerosol particles. The trend of aerosol pH and its drivers is crucial in understanding the multiphase formation pathways of aerosols. Here, we reported the first trend analysis of aerosol pH from 2011 to 2019 in eastern China, calculated with the ISORROPIA model based on observed gas and aerosol compositions. The implementation of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan led to −35.8 %, −37.6 %, −9.6 %, −81.0 % and 1.2 % changes of PM2.5, SO42-, NHx, non-volatile cations (NVCs) and NO3- in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region during this period. Different from the drastic changes of aerosol compositions due to the implementation of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan, aerosol pH showed a minor change of −0.24 over the 9 years. Besides the multiphase buffer effect, the opposite effects from the changes of SO42- and non-volatile cations played key roles in determining this minor pH trend, contributing to a change of +0.38 and −0.35, respectively. Seasonal variations in aerosol pH were mainly driven by the temperature, while the diurnal variations were driven by both temperature and relative humidity. In the future, SO2, NOx and NH3 emissions are expected to be further reduced by 86.9 %, 74.9 % and 41.7 % in 2050 according to the best health effect pollution control scenario (SSP1-26-BHE). The corresponding aerosol pH in eastern China is estimated to increase by ∼0.19, resulting in 0.04 less NO3- and 0.12 less NH4+ partitioning ratios, which suggests that NH3 and NOx emission controls are effective in mitigating haze pollution in eastern China.

Cold and snowy spells are compound extreme events with the potential to cause high socioeconomic impacts. Gaining insight into their dynamics in climate change scenarios could help anticipating the need for adaptation efforts. We focus on winter cold and snowy spells over Italy, reconstructing 32 major events in the past 60 years from documentary sources. Despite warmer winter temperatures, very recent cold spells have been associated with abundant and sometimes exceptional snowfall. Our goal is to analyse the dynamical weather patterns associated with these events and understand whether those patterns would be more or less recurrent in different emission scenarios using an intermediate-complexity model (the Planet Simulator, PlaSim). Our results, obtained by considering RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 end-of-century equivalent CO2 concentrations, suggest that the likelihood of synoptic configurations analogous to those leading to extreme cold spells would grow substantially under increased emissions.

ABSTRACT: Supplemental n-3 fatty acids (FA) may support better immune responses than n-6 and n-9 FA in dairy calves. The objective was to evaluate the effect of n-3 FA, supplemented as a fish oil product (FO) in the milk replacer (MR), in comparison to n-6 and n-9 FA, supplemented as canola oil (CO), on body weight (BW), daily gain, and immunological parameters of preweaning Holstein calves. The study was conducted from September to December 2019. Calves were randomly allocated to a control group (n = 15; BW = 36.2 ± 1.5 kg; mean ± SEM) supplemented daily with 30 mL of CO and to an experimental group (n = 15; BW = 36.3 ± 1.5 kg) supplemented with 60 g of a product containing 30 g of FO. Both treatments were added to the MR during the morning feeding. All calves were fed 4 L of MR at 12.5% solids at 0700 and 1600 h for wk 1, 6 L from wk 2 to 7, and 3 L once daily (0700 h) during wk 8 until weaning (56 d). Blood samples were collected at 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, and 56 d of age for serum haptoglobin, TNF-α, IL-1β, and protectin. Dry matter intake was recorded in all experimental calves daily. Seroneutralization titers to vaccination against viral diseases (infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, parainfluenza 3, bovine viral diarrhea, and bovine respiratory syncytial virus) were determined. Mixed models for repeated measures were developed to analyze variables over time. Seroneutralization titers were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test. The other variables were compared by a generalized linear model. Serum FA profile at 35 d of age showed that FO supported higher concentrations of n-3 FA than CO. Final BW [65.2 vs. 62.0 kg, standard error of the mean (SEM) = 2.1 kg] and average daily gain (0.52 vs. 0.46 kg/d, SEM = 0.1 kg/d) tended to be higher for the FO than the CO group. An interaction of treatment × day for dry matter intake was observed, especially during weaning (2.17 kg vs. 1.94 kg, SEM = 0.158 kg, for FO and CO group, respectively). Blood lactate (mmol/L) was higher in the CO than in the FO group at d 7. Haptoglobin and IL-1β were higher for the CO group on d 14 than the FO group. The TNF- α concentrations for the FO group were reduced over time, whereas the concentrations in the CO group remained constant. Protectin was higher in the FO group on d 14, but was lower on d 28, 35, and 49. Seroneutralization antibody titers postvaccination for the PI3 virus were higher for the FO than the CO group. In conclusion, calves supplemented with FO had lower concentrations of blood lactate, haptoglobin, IL-1β and TNF-α than calves supplemented with CO during the study period. The FO supplementation had a higher DMI than CO supplementation. Results of this trial should be interpreted with caution due to the lack of a negative control group as well as the lower birth weight and growth rate observed under heat stress conditions.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a major atmospheric pollutant and precursor of sulfate aerosols, which influences air quality, cloud microphysics, and climate. Therefore, better understanding the conversion of SO2 to sulfate is essential to simulate and predict sulfur compounds more accurately. This study evaluates the effects of in-cloud aqueous-phase chemistry on SO2 oxidation in the Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2). We replaced the default parameterized SO2 aqueous-phase reactions with detailed HOx, Fe, N, and carbonate chemistry in cloud droplets and performed a global simulation for 2014–2015. Compared with the observations, the results incorporating detailed cloud aqueous-phase chemistry greatly reduced SO2 overestimation. This overestimation was reduced by 0.1–10 ppbv (parts per billion by volume) in most of Europe, North America, and Asia and more than 10 ppbv in parts of China. The biases in annual simulated SO2 mixing ratios decreased by 46 %, 41 %, and 22 % in Europe, the USA, and China, respectively. Fe chemistry and HOx chemistry contributed more to SO2 oxidation than N chemistry. Higher concentrations of soluble Fe and higher pH values could further enhance the oxidation capacity. This study emphasizes the importance of detailed in-cloud aqueous-phase chemistry for the oxidation of SO2. These mechanisms can improve SO2 simulation in CESM2 and deepen understanding of SO2 oxidation and sulfate formation.

Here, we report the utilisation of a powder-bed-fusion additive manufacturing to achieve the CMSX-4 single-crystal repair with René N5 powders. The single-crystal repair is characterised by a fine columnar dendritic substructure, limited in-grain misorientation over tens of millimetres in height, and strong deposit-to-substrate bonding. The brighter contrast region of 300 to 400 μm thick, formed by the cellular solidification front, sits above the melted back region with a horizontal low-angle boundary (4° misorientation) in-between. Its higher hardness of 450 HV is attributed to the fine cuboidal primary γ′ of 135 ± 7 nm. Their presence is a combined effect of high cooling rate and limited local compositional difference. The Scheil-Gulliver predicted solute partitioning of Ta and Hf to the inter-dendritic region agrees well with the MC carbides appearing at the columnar dendritic and cellular boundaries. Computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) simulations, combined with the minimum undercooling criterion, helps to determine the vertical distance between the melt-pool bottom and the oriented-to-misoriented transition borderline, providing a convenient guideline to assess the single-crystal likelihood, in a sense that this distance needs to be larger than the hatch depth. The CFD-calculated solidification velocities and thermal gradients agree with the columnar-to-equiaxed transition curve and the experimental observation.

The global distribution of cropping intensity (CI) is essential to our understanding of agricultural land use management on Earth. Optical remote sensing has revolutionized our ability to map CI over large areas in a repeated and cost-efficient manner. Previous studies have mainly focused on investigating the spatiotemporal patterns of CI ranging from regions to the entire globe with the use of coarse-resolution data, which are inadequate for characterizing farming practices within heterogeneous landscapes. To fill this knowledge gap, in this study, we utilized multiple satellite data to develop a global, spatially continuous CI map dataset at 30 m resolution (GCI30). Accuracy assessments indicated that GCI30 exhibited high agreement with visually interpreted validation samples and in situ observations from the PhenoCam network. We carried out both statistical and spatial comparisons of GCI30 with six existing global CI estimates. Based on GCI30, we estimated that the global average annual CI during 2016–2018 was 1.05, which is close to the mean (1.09) and median (1.07) CI values of the existing six global CI estimates, although the spatial resolution and temporal coverage vary significantly among products. A spatial comparison with two satellite-based land surface phenology products further suggested that GCI30 was not only capable of capturing the overall pattern of global CI but also provided many spatial details. GCI30 indicated that single cropping was the primary agricultural system on Earth, accounting for 81.57 % (12.28×106 km2) of the world's cropland extent. Multiple-cropping systems, on the other hand, were commonly observed in South America and Asia. We found large variations across countries and agroecological zones, reflecting the joint control of natural and anthropogenic drivers on regulating cropping practices. As the first global-coverage, fine-resolution CI product, GCI30 is expected to fill the data gap for promoting sustainable agriculture by depicting worldwide diversity of agricultural land use intensity. Late-gestation heat stress of dairy cows reduces fetal growth and influences postnatal performance and immune status of the offspring. Our first objective was to evaluate the effect of in utero heat stress on overall fetal and organ growth, particularly organs associated with immune function. The second objective was to examine the cellular mechanism of altered passive immunity in neonatal bull calves after in utero heat stress. Specifically, we examined the rate of apoptosis of intestinal cells early in life, as it is associated with gut closure. Dams were dried off approximately 45 d before expected calving and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: heat stress (HT) or cooling (CL). During the dry period all cows were housed under shade in a freestall barn, where the pen for CL cows was equipped with active cooling, including water soakers and fans, whereas the pen for HT cows had no soakers or fans. Using rectal temperature and respiration rate as indicators, heat stress was severe. Average rectal temperature in HT cows was 39.3°C compared with 39.0°C in CL cows, and HT cows had a respiration rate of 66.7 breaths/min compared with 43.2 breaths/min for CL cows. Bull calves (n = 30) were immediately separated from their dams at birth, weighed, and then killed before colostrum feeding (n = 5/treatment; d 0) or at 1 or 2 d of age following colostrum feeding (n = 5/treatment per day). After slaughter, the small intestine was removed and weighed, and samples from the jejunum were fixed for immunohistochemistry. Birth weight of bulls from HT dams was 1.1 kg lower than that of bulls from CL dams. Thymus, spleen, and heart weights of HT bulls were lower relative to those of CL bulls, whereas liver weight of HT bulls tended to be lower relative to that of CL bulls. Jejunal cell apoptosis decreased with age in both HT and CL calves after birth, mirroring gut closure. However, in utero heat stress increased the apoptotic rate in the jejunum, particularly at birth. We conclude that the chronic exposure to heat strain of HT compared with CL dams in late gestation significantly affected fetal growth and immune tissue development, which may be associated with reduced immune function in early life. Also, late-gestation heat stress increased calves' intestinal apoptosis in the first 2 d of life, which might explain the decreased IgG uptake and limited passive immune competence observed in previous studies.

China's fossil-fuel CO2 (FFCO2) emissions accounted for approximately 28 % of the global total FFCO2 in 2016. An accurate estimate of China's FFCO2 emissions is a prerequisite for global and regional carbon budget analyses and the monitoring of carbon emission reduction efforts. However, significant uncertainties and discrepancies exist in estimations of China's FFCO2 emissions due to a lack of detailed traceable emission factors (EFs) and multiple statistical data sources. Here, we evaluated China's FFCO2 emissions from nine published global and regional emission datasets. These datasets show that the total emissions increased from 3.4 (3.0–3.7) in 2000 to 9.8 (9.2–10.4) Gt CO2 yr−1 in 2016. The variations in these estimates were largely due to the different EF (0.491–0.746 t C per t of coal) and activity data. The large-scale patterns of gridded emissions showed a reasonable agreement, with high emissions being concentrated in major city clusters, and the standard deviation mostly ranged from 10 % to 40 % at the provincial level. However, patterns beyond the provincial scale varied significantly, with the top 5 % of the grid level accounting for 50 %–90 % of total emissions in these datasets. Our findings highlight the significance of using locally measured EF for Chinese coal. To reduce uncertainty, we recommend using physical CO2 measurements and use these values for dataset validation, key input data sharing (e.g., point sources), and finer-resolution validations at various levels.

Previous studies have documented the negative effects of heat stress during the dry period on dairy cow performance during the next lactation, but an easy method to assess heat stress for dry cow management is lacking. In an effort to determine a threshold for heat stress based on the physiological response of respiration rate, an easily measured variable, an analysis including data collected from 6 different studies (n = 144 cows) was performed to summarize the correlations among rectal temperature (RT) and respiration rate (RR) during the dry period, milk production during the first 8 wk of lactation (MK), calf birth weight (CW), body weight at calving (BW), gestation length (GL), and dry matter intake (DMI) pre- and postpartum. Studies were conducted in Florida during the summer, and dry cows were assigned to 2 treatments: heat stress (only shade; HT, n = 75 cows) and cooling (shade, fans, and soakers; CL, n = 69 cows). Average RT (0.3°C) and RR [26 breaths per min (bpm)] of HT cows increased compared with CL. In addition, the CL group produced more milk (2.8 kg/d) during the first 8 wk of the subsequent lactation relative to HT. Correlation analysis indicated that RR of HT was negatively correlated with MK and GL. Within HT, RT was also negatively correlated with MK and GL and tended to be negatively correlated with CW. In addition to being negatively correlated with RT and RR, HT MK was positively correlated with CW, GL, and DMI postpartum. In CL, no correlations were observed for RR, but RT was positively correlated with BW, and MK was positively correlated with DMI postpartum and tended to be positively correlated with GL. Moreover, the overall RT was 39.1 ± 0.48°C and RR was 61 ± 19.5 bpm, which indicates that RR over 61 bpm is an indicator of heat stress in cows during the dry period and can be easily assessed at the cow level. In summary, the more heat load a cow carries in the dry period, the greater the negative effects are on subsequent milk production, which may suggest a threshold for the effects of heat stress. Also, variation among cows within the HT group indicates that cows with longer gestation length have heavier calves, eat more postpartum, and produce more milk, but not as much as CL cows.

The hygroscopic behavior of black carbon (BC)-containing particles (BCPs) has a significant impact on global and regional climate change. However, the mechanism and factors controlling the hygroscopicity of BCPs from different carbon sources are not well understood. Here, we systematically measured the equilibrium and kinetics of water uptake by 15 different BCPs (10 herb-derived BCPs, 2 wood-derived BCPs, and 3 soot-type BCPs) using a gravimetric water vapor sorption method combined with in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). In the gravimetric analysis, the sorption–desorption equilibrium isotherms were measured under continuous-stepwise water vapor pressure conditions, while the kinetics was measured at a variety of humidity levels obtained by different saturated aqueous salt solutions. The equilibrium water uptake of the tested group of BCPs at high relative humidity (>80 %) positively correlated to the dissolved mineral content (0.01–13.0 wt %) (R2=0.86, P=0.0001), the content of the thermogravimetrically analyzed organic carbon (OCTGA, 4.48–15.25 wt %) (R2=0.52, P=0.002), and the content of the alkali-extracted organic carbon (OCAE, 0.14–8.39 wt %) (R2=0.80, P=0.0001). In contrast, no positive correlation was obtained with the content of total organic carbon or elemental carbon. Among the major soluble ionic constituents, chloride and ammonium were each correlated with the equilibrium water uptake at high relative humidity. Compared with the herbal BCPs and soot, the woody BCPs had much lower equilibrium water uptake, especially at high relative humidity, likely due to the very low dissolved mineral content and OC content. The DRIFTS analysis provided generally consistent results at low relative humidity. The kinetics of water uptake (measured by pseudo-second-order rate constant) correlated to the content of OCTGA and OCAE as well as the content of chloride and ammonium at low relative humidity (33 %) but to the porosity of BCPs at high relative humidity (94 %). This was the first study to show that BCPs of different types and sources had greatly varying hygroscopic properties.

The Atmospheric Pollution and Human Health in a Chinese Megacity (APHH-Beijing) programme is an international collaborative project focusing on understanding the sources, processes and health effects of air pollution in the Beijing megacity. APHH-Beijing brings together leading China and UK research groups, state-of-the-art infrastructure and air quality models to work on four research themes: (1) sources and emissions of air pollutants; (2) atmospheric processes affecting urban air pollution; (3) air pollution exposure and health impacts; and (4) interventions and solutions. Themes 1 and 2 are closely integrated and support Theme 3, while Themes 1–3 provide scientific data for Theme 4 to develop cost-effective air pollution mitigation solutions. This paper provides an introduction to (i) the rationale of the APHH-Beijing programme and (ii) the measurement and modelling activities performed as part of it. In addition, this paper introduces the meteorology and air quality conditions during two joint intensive field campaigns – a core integration activity in APHH-Beijing. The coordinated campaigns provided observations of the atmospheric chemistry and physics at two sites: (i) the Institute of Atmospheric Physics in central Beijing and (ii) Pinggu in rural Beijing during 10 November–10 December 2016 (winter) and 21 May–22 June 2017 (summer). The campaigns were complemented by numerical modelling and automatic air quality and low-cost sensor observations in the Beijing megacity. In summary, the paper provides background information on the APHH-Beijing programme and sets the scene for more focused papers addressing specific aspects, processes and effects of air pollution in Beijing.

A large fraction of fossil fuel CO2 emissions emanate from “hotspots”, such as cities (where direct CO2 emissions related to fossil fuel combustion in transport, residential, commercial sectors, etc., excluding emissions from electricity-producing power plants, occur), isolated power plants, and manufacturing facilities, which cover a small fraction of the land surface. The coverage of all high-emitting cities and point sources across the globe by bottom-up inventories is far from complete, and for most of those covered, the uncertainties in CO2 emission estimates in bottom-up inventories are too large to allow continuous and rigorous assessment of emission changes (Gurney et al., 2019). Space-borne imagery of atmospheric CO2 has the potential to provide independent estimates of CO2 emissions from hotspots. But first, what a hotspot is needs to be defined for the purpose of satellite observations. The proposed space-borne imagers with global coverage planned for the coming decade have a pixel size on the order of a few square kilometers and a XCO2 accuracy and precision of  ppm for individual measurements of vertically integrated columns of dry-air mole fractions of CO2 (XCO2). This resolution and precision is insufficient to provide a cartography of emissions for each individual pixel. Rather, the integrated emission of diffuse emitting areas and intense point sources is sought. In this study, we characterize area and point fossil fuel CO2 emitting sources which generate coherent XCO2 plumes that may be observed from space. We characterize these emitting sources around the globe and they are referred to as “emission clumps” hereafter. An algorithm is proposed to identify emission clumps worldwide, based on the ODIAC global high-resolution 1 km fossil fuel emission data product. The clump algorithm selects the major urban areas from a GIS (geographic information system) file and two emission thresholds. The selected urban areas and a high emission threshold are used to identify clump cores such as inner city areas or large power plants. A low threshold and a random walker (RW) scheme are then used to aggregate all grid cells contiguous to cores in order to define a single clump. With our definition of the thresholds, which are appropriate for a space imagery with 0.5 ppm precision for a single XCO2 measurement, a total of 11 314 individual clumps, with 5088 area clumps, and 6226 point-source clumps (power plants) are identified. These clumps contribute 72 % of the global fossil fuel CO2 emissions according to the ODIAC inventory. The emission clumps is a new tool for comparing fossil fuel CO2 emissions from different inventories and objectively identifying emitting areas that have a potential to be detected by future global satellite imagery of XCO2. Parameterizations that impact wet removal of black carbon (BC) remain uncertain in global climate models. In this study, we enhance the default wet deposition scheme for BC in the Community Earth System Model (CESM) to (a) add relevant physical processes that were not resolved in the default model and (b) facilitate understanding of the relative importance of various cloud processes on BC distributions. We find that the enhanced scheme greatly improves model performance against HIPPO observations relative to the default scheme. We find that convection scavenging, aerosol activation, ice nucleation, evaporation of rain or snow, and below-cloud scavenging dominate wet deposition of BC. BC conversion rates for processes related to in-cloud water–ice conversion (i.e., riming, the Bergeron process, and evaporation of cloud water sedimentation) are relatively smaller, but have large seasonal variations. We also conduct sensitivity simulations that turn off each cloud process one at a time to quantify the influence of cloud processes on BC distributions and radiative forcing. Convective scavenging is found to have the largest impact on BC concentrations at mid-altitudes over the tropics and even globally. In addition, BC is sensitive to all cloud processes over the Northern Hemisphere at high latitudes. As for BC vertical distributions, convective scavenging greatly influences BC fractions at different altitudes. Suppressing BC droplet activation in clouds mainly decreases the fraction of column BC below 5 km, whereas suppressing BC ice nucleation increases that above 10 km. During wintertime, the Bergeron process also significantly increases BC concentrations at lower altitudes over the Arctic. Our simulation yields a global BC burden of 85 Gg; corresponding direct radiative forcing (DRF) of BC estimated using the Parallel Offline Radiative Transfer (PORT) is 0.13 W m−2, much lower than previous studies. The range of DRF derived from sensitivity simulations is large, 0.09–0.33 W m−2, corresponding to BC burdens varying from 73 to 151 Gg. Due to differences in BC vertical distributions among each sensitivity simulation, fractional changes in DRF (relative to the baseline simulation) are always higher than fractional changes in BC burdens; this occurs because relocating BC in the vertical influences the radiative forcing per BC mass. Our results highlight the influences of cloud microphysical processes on BC concentrations and radiative forcing.

Nutritional strategies to mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on animal welfare and productivity often involve changes in ration formulation. However, cattle commonly sort their ration in favour of certain components, and it is not clear how feed sorting responds to heat stress. This study investigated the association between heat stress and feed sorting behaviour. Lactating Holstein dairy cows (n = 32; parity = 2.8±1.2; mean±SD) were housed in a free stall barn and milked 3×/day. Cows were fed individually using the Calan Broadbent Feeding System and offered ad libitum access to a total mixed ration (containing on a dry matter basis: 3.3% ryegrass hay, 16.5% ryegrass baleage, 24.7% corn silage, 11.1% brewers grains, 19.7% ground corn, 19.8% concentrate and 4.9% protein/mineral supplement), provided 1×/day. Beginning at 186±60 days in milk, cows were exposed to either: heat stress conditions (HT; n = 15) (average temperature–humidity index: 77.6), or evaporative cooling (CL; n = 17), consisting of misters and fans over the freestall and feed bunks. Data were collected during a 4-day baseline period, and two 4-day experimental periods: starting at 10 days after implementing treatments (defined as acute heat stress for HT cows), and at 62 days after implementing treatments (defined as chronic heat stress for HT cows). Daily feed intake and physiological responses to heat stress (body temperature, respiration rate) were recorded. Samples of fresh and refused feed were collected daily from individual cows for particle size analysis. The particle size separator had three screens (19, 8 and 1.18 mm) and a bottom pan, resulting in 4 fractions (long, medium, short and fine particles). Feed sorting was calculated as the actual intake of each particle size fraction expressed as a percentage of the predicted intake of that fraction. During both heat stress periods, HT cows sorted for long particles more than CL cows (105.0% v. 100.6%; SE = 1.1). During acute heat stress, HT cows sorted to a greater extent than CL cows against medium and short particles, whereas sorting of these fractions did not differ during chronic heat stress. Body temperature and respiration rate were associated across treatments with the extent of sorting for long particles and against short particles during acute heat stress. These results suggest that feed sorting is particularly influenced during acute heat stress, and that sorting for longer particles may increase in heat stress.

Combining measurements of atmospheric CO2 and its radiocarbon (14CO2) fraction and transport modeling in atmospheric inversions offers a way to derive improved estimates of CO2 emitted from fossil fuel (FFCO2). In this study, we solve for the monthly FFCO2 emission budgets at regional scale (i.e., the size of a medium-sized country in Europe) and investigate the performance of different observation networks and sampling strategies across Europe. The inversion system is built on the LMDZv4 global transport model at 3.75° × 2.5° resolution. We conduct Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) and use two types of diagnostics to assess the potential of the observation and inverse modeling frameworks. The first one relies on the theoretical computation of the uncertainty in the estimate of emissions from the inversion, known as posterior uncertainty, and on the uncertainty reduction compared to the uncertainty in the inventories of these emissions, which are used as a prior knowledge by the inversion (called prior uncertainty). The second one is based on comparisons of prior and posterior estimates of the emission to synthetic true emissions when these true emissions are used beforehand to generate the synthetic fossil fuel CO2 mixing ratio measurements that are assimilated in the inversion. With 17 stations currently measuring 14CO2 across Europe using 2-week integrated sampling, the uncertainty reduction for monthly FFCO2 emissions in a country where the network is rather dense like Germany, is larger than 30 %. With the 43 14CO2 measurement stations planned in Europe, the uncertainty reduction for monthly FFCO2 emissions is increased for the UK, France, Italy, eastern Europe and the Balkans, depending on the configuration of prior uncertainty. Further increasing the number of stations or the sampling frequency improves the uncertainty reduction (up to 40 to 70 %) in high emitting regions, but the performance of the inversion remains limited over low-emitting regions, even assuming a dense observation network covering the whole of Europe. This study also shows that both the theoretical uncertainty reduction (and resulting posterior uncertainty) from the inversion and the posterior estimate of emissions itself, for a given prior and true estimate of the emissions, are highly sensitive to the choice between two configurations of the prior uncertainty derived from the general estimate by inventory compilers or computations on existing inventories. In particular, when the configuration of the prior uncertainty statistics in the inversion system does not match the difference between these prior and true estimates, the posterior estimate of emissions deviates significantly from the truth. This highlights the difficulty of filtering the targeted signal in the model–data misfit for this specific inversion framework, the need to strongly rely on the prior uncertainty characterization for this and, consequently, the need for improved estimates of the uncertainties in current emission inventories for real applications with actual data. We apply the posterior uncertainty in annual emissions to the problem of detecting a trend of FFCO2, showing that increasing the monitoring period (e.g., more than 20 years) is more efficient than reducing uncertainty in annual emissions by adding stations. The coarse spatial resolution of the atmospheric transport model used in this OSSE (typical of models used for global inversions of natural CO2 fluxes) leads to large representation errors (related to the inability of the transport model to capture the spatial variability of the actual fluxes and mixing ratios at subgrid scales), which is a key limitation of our OSSE setup to improve the accuracy of the monitoring of FFCO2 emissions in European regions. Using a high-resolution transport model should improve the potential to retrieve FFCO2 emissions, and this needs to be investigated.

Snow cover plays a key role for sustaining ecology and society in mountainous regions. Light-absorbing particulates (including black carbon, organic carbon, and mineral dust) deposited on snow can reduce surface albedo and contribute to the near-worldwide melting of snow and ice. This study focused on understanding the role of black carbon and other water-insoluble light-absorbing particulates in the snow cover of the Tibetan Plateau (TP). The results found that the black carbon, organic carbon, and dust concentrations in snow cover generally ranged from 202 to 17 468 ng g−1, 491 to 13 880 ng g−1, and 22 to 846 µg g−1, respectively, with higher concentrations in the central to northern areas of the TP. Back trajectory analysis suggested that the northern TP was influenced mainly by air masses from Central Asia with some Eurasian influence, and air masses in the central and Himalayan region originated mainly from Central and South Asia. The relative biomass-burning-sourced black carbon contributions decreased from ∼ 50 % in the southern TP to ∼ 30 % in the northern TP. The relative contribution of black carbon and dust to snow albedo reduction reached approximately 37 and 15 %, respectively. The effect of black carbon and dust reduced the snow cover duration by 3.1 ± 0.1 to 4.4 ± 0.2 days. Meanwhile, the black carbon and dust had important implications for snowmelt water loss over the TP. The findings indicate that the impacts of black carbon and mineral dust need to be properly accounted for in future regional climate projections, particularly in the high-altitude cryosphere.

The conversion of natural grassland into agricultural fields is an intensive anthropogenic perturbation commonly occurring in semiarid regions, and this perturbation strongly affects soil microbiota. In this study, the influences of land-use conversion on the soil properties and bacterial communities in the Horqin Grasslands in Northeast China were assessed. This study aimed to investigate (1) how the abundances of soil bacteria changed across land-use types, (2) how the structure of the soil bacterial community was altered in each land-use type, and (3) how these variations were correlated with soil physical and chemical properties. Variations in the diversities and compositions of bacterial communities and the relative abundances of dominant taxa were detected in four distinct land-use systems, namely, natural meadow grassland, paddy field, upland field, and poplar plantation, through the high-throughput Illumina MiSeq sequencing technique. The results indicated that land-use changes primarily affected the soil physical and chemical properties and bacterial community structure. Soil properties, namely, organic matter, pH, total N, total P, available N and P, and microbial biomass C, N, and P, influenced the bacterial community structure. The dominant phyla and genera were almost the same among the land-use types, but their relative abundances were significantly different. The effects of land-use changes on the structure of soil bacterial communities were more quantitative than qualitative.

The response of surface ozone (O3) concentrations to basin-scale warming and cooling of Northern Hemisphere oceans is investigated using the Community Earth System Model (CESM). Idealized, spatially uniform sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies of ±1 °C are individually superimposed onto the North Pacific, North Atlantic, and North Indian oceans. Our simulations suggest large seasonal and regional variability in surface O3 in response to SST anomalies, especially in the boreal summer. The responses of surface O3 associated with basin-scale SST warming and cooling have similar magnitude but are opposite in sign. Increasing the SST by 1 °C in one of the oceans generally decreases the surface O3 concentrations from 1 to 5 ppbv. With fixed emissions, SST increases in a specific ocean basin in the Northern Hemisphere tend to increase the summertime surface O3 concentrations over upwind regions, accompanied by a widespread reduction over downwind continents. We implement the integrated process rate (IPR) analysis in CESM and find that meteorological O3 transport in response to SST changes is the key process causing surface O3 perturbations in most cases. During the boreal summer, basin-scale SST warming facilitates the vertical transport of O3 to the surface over upwind regions while significantly reducing the vertical transport over downwind continents. This process, as confirmed by tagged CO-like tracers, indicates a considerable suppression of intercontinental O3 transport due to increased tropospheric stability at lower midlatitudes induced by SST changes. Conversely, the responses of chemical O3 production to regional SST warming can exert positive effects on surface O3 levels over highly polluted continents, except South Asia, where intensified cloud loading in response to North Indian SST warming depresses both the surface air temperature and solar radiation, and thus photochemical O3 production. Our findings indicate a robust linkage between basin-scale SST variability and continental surface O3 pollution, which should be considered in regional air quality management.

Methane (CH4) has a 28-fold greater global warming potential than CO2 over 100 years. Atmospheric CH4 concentration has tripled since 1750. Anthropogenic CH4 emissions from China have been growing rapidly in the past decades and contribute more than 10 % of global anthropogenic CH4 emissions with large uncertainties in existing global inventories, generally limited to country-scale statistics. To date, a long-term CH4 emission inventory including the major sources sectors and based on province-level emission factors is still lacking. In this study, we produced a detailed annual bottom-up inventory of anthropogenic CH4 emissions from the eight major source sectors in China for the period 1980–2010. In the past 3 decades, the total CH4 emissions increased from 24.4 [18.6–30.5] Tg CH4 yr−1 in 1980 (mean [minimum–maximum of 95 % confidence interval]) to 44.9 [36.6–56.4] Tg CH4 yr−1 in 2010. Most of this increase took place in the 2000s decade with averaged yearly emissions of 38.5 [30.6–48.3] Tg CH4 yr−1. This fast increase of the total CH4 emissions after 2000 is mainly driven by CH4 emissions from coal exploitation. The largest contribution to total CH4 emissions also shifted from rice cultivation in 1980 to coal exploitation in 2010. The total emissions inferred in this work compare well with the EPA inventory but appear to be 36 and 18 % lower than the EDGAR4.2 inventory and the estimates using the same method but IPCC default emission factors, respectively. The uncertainty of our inventory is investigated using emission factors collected from state-of-the-art published literatures. We also distributed province-scale emissions into 0.1° × 0.1° maps using socioeconomic activity data. This new inventory could help understanding CH4 budgets at regional scale and guiding CH4 mitigation policies in China.

We develop and examine a microphysics-based black carbon (BC) aerosol aging scheme that accounts for condensation, coagulation, and heterogeneous chemical oxidation processes in a global 3-D chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) by interpreting the BC measurements from the HIAPER Pole-to-Pole Observations (HIPPO, 2009–2011) using the model. We convert aerosol mass in the model to number concentration by assuming lognormal aerosol size distributions and compute the microphysical BC aging rate (excluding chemical oxidation aging) explicitly from the condensation of soluble materials onto hydrophobic BC and the coagulation between hydrophobic BC and preexisting soluble particles. The chemical oxidation aging is tested in the sensitivity simulation. The microphysical aging rate is ∼ 4 times higher in the lower troposphere over source regions than that from a fixed aging scheme with an e-folding time of 1.2 days. The higher aging rate reflects the large emissions of sulfate–nitrate and secondary organic aerosol precursors hence faster BC aging through condensation and coagulation. In contrast, the microphysical aging is more than 5-fold slower than the fixed aging in remote regions, where condensation and coagulation are weak. Globally, BC microphysical aging is dominated by condensation, while coagulation contribution is largest over eastern China, India, and central Africa. The fixed aging scheme results in an overestimate of HIPPO BC throughout the troposphere by a factor of 6 on average. The microphysical scheme reduces this discrepancy by a factor of ∼ 3, particularly in the middle and upper troposphere. It also leads to a 3-fold reduction in model bias in the latitudinal BC column burden averaged along the HIPPO flight tracks, with largest improvements in the tropics. The resulting global annual mean BC lifetime is 4.2 days and BC burden is 0.25 mg m−2, with 7.3 % of the burden at high altitudes (above 5 km). Wet scavenging accounts for 80.3 % of global BC deposition. We find that, in source regions, the microphysical aging rate is insensitive to aerosol size distribution, condensation threshold, and chemical oxidation aging, while it is the opposite in remote regions, where the aging rate is orders of magnitude smaller. As a result, global BC burden and lifetime show little sensitivity (< 5 % change) to these three factors.

Improving the ability of global models to predict concentrations of black carbon (BC) over the Pacific Ocean is essential to evaluate the impact of BC on marine climate. In this study, we tag BC tracers from 13 source regions around the globe in a global chemical transport model, Model for Ozone and Related Chemical Tracers, version 4 (MOZART-4). Numerous sensitivity simulations are carried out varying the aging timescale of BC emitted from each source region. The aging timescale for each source region is optimized by minimizing errors in vertical profiles of BC mass mixing ratios between simulations and HIAPER Pole-to-Pole Observations (HIPPO). For most HIPPO deployments, in the Northern Hemisphere, optimized aging timescales are less than half a day for BC emitted from tropical and midlatitude source regions and about 1 week for BC emitted from high-latitude regions in all seasons except summer. We find that East Asian emissions contribute most to the BC loading over the North Pacific, while South American, African and Australian emissions dominate BC loadings over the South Pacific. Dominant source regions contributing to BC loadings in other parts of the globe are also assessed. The lifetime of BC originating from East Asia (i.e., the world's largest BC emitter) is found to be only 2.2 days, much shorter than the global average lifetime of 4.9 days, making the contribution from East Asia to the global BC burden only 36 % of that from the second largest emitter, Africa. Thus, evaluating only relative emission rates without accounting for differences in aging timescales and deposition rates is not predictive of the contribution of a given source region to climate impacts. Our simulations indicate that the lifetime of BC increases nearly linearly with aging timescale for all source regions. When the aging rate is fast, the lifetime of BC is largely determined by factors that control local deposition rates (e.g., precipitation). The sensitivity of lifetime to aging timescale depends strongly on the initial hygroscopicity of freshly emitted BC. Our findings suggest that the aging timescale of BC varies significantly by region and season and can strongly influence the contribution of source regions to BC burdens around the globe. Therefore, improving parameterizations of the aging process for BC is important for enhancing the predictive skill of global models. Future observations that investigate the evolution of the hygroscopicity of BC as it ages from different source regions to the remote atmosphere are urgently needed.

Rapid urbanization throughout eastern China is imposing an irreversible effect on local climate and air quality. In this paper, we examine the response of a range of meteorological and air quality indicators to urbanization. Our study uses the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with chemistry (WRF/Chem) to simulate the climate and air quality impacts of four hypothetical urbanization scenarios with fixed surface pollutant emissions during the month of July from 2008 to 2012. An improved integrated process rate (IPR) analysis scheme is implemented in WRF/Chem to investigate the mechanisms behind the forcing–response relationship at the process level. For all years, as urban land area expands, concentrations of CO, elemental carbon (EC), and particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) tend to decrease near the surface (below ~ 500 m), but increase at higher altitudes (1–3 km), resulting in a reduced vertical concentration gradient. On the other hand, the O3 burden, averaged over all newly urbanized grid cells, consistently increases from the surface to a height of about 4 km. Sensitivity tests show that the responses of pollutant concentrations to the spatial extent of urbanization are nearly linear near the surface, but nonlinear at higher altitudes. Over eastern China, each 10 % increase in nearby urban land coverage on average leads to a decrease of approximately 2 % in surface concentrations for CO, EC, and PM2.5, while for O3 an increase of about 1 % is simulated. At 800 hPa, pollutants' concentrations tend to increase even more rapidly with an increase in nearby urban land coverage. This indicates that as large tracts of new urban land emerge, the influence of urban expansion on meteorology and air pollution would be significantly amplified. IPR analysis reveals the contribution of individual atmospheric processes to pollutants' concentration changes. It indicates that, for primary pollutants, the enhanced sink (source) caused by turbulent mixing and vertical advection in the lower (upper) atmosphere could be a key factor in changes to simulated vertical profiles. The evolution of secondary pollutants is further influenced by the upward relocation of precursors that impact gas-phase chemistry for O3 and aerosol processes for PM2.5. Our study indicates that dense urbanization has a moderate dilution effect on surface primary airborne contaminants, but may intensify severe haze and ozone pollution if local emissions are not well controlled.

Atmospheric deposition of iron (Fe) plays an important role in controlling oceanic primary productivity. However, the sources of Fe in the atmosphere are not well understood. In particular, the combustion sources of Fe and the subsequent deposition to the oceans have been accounted for in only few ocean biogeochemical models of the carbon cycle. Here we used a mass-balance method to estimate the emissions of Fe from the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass by accounting for the Fe contents in fuel and the partitioning of Fe during combustion. The emissions of Fe attached to aerosols from combustion sources were estimated by particle size, and their uncertainties were quantified by a Monte Carlo simulation. The emissions of Fe from mineral sources were estimated using the latest soil mineralogical database to date. As a result, the total Fe emissions from combustion averaged for 1960–2007 were estimated to be 5.3 Tg yr−1 (90% confidence of 2.3 to 12.1). Of these emissions, 1, 27 and 72% were emitted in particles < 1 μm (PM1), 1–10 μm (PM1-10), and > 10 μm (PM> 10), respectively, compared to a total Fe emission from mineral dust of 41.0 Tg yr−1 in a log-normal distribution with a mass median diameter of 2.5 μm and a geometric standard deviation of 2. For combustion sources, different temporal trends were found in fine and medium-to-coarse particles, with a notable increase in Fe emissions in PM1 since 2000 due to an increase in Fe emission from motor vehicles (from 0.008 to 0.0103 Tg yr−1 in 2000 and 2007, respectively). These emissions have been introduced in a global 3-D transport model run at a spatial resolution of 0.94° latitude by 1.28° longitude to evaluate our estimation of Fe emissions. The modelled Fe concentrations as monthly means were compared with the monthly (57 sites) or daily (768 sites) measured concentrations at a total of 825 sampling stations. The deviation between modelled and observed Fe concentrations attached to aerosols at the surface was within a factor of 2 at most sampling stations, and the deviation was within a factor of 1.5 at sampling stations dominated by combustion sources. We analysed the relative contribution of combustion sources to total Fe concentrations over different regions of the world. The new mineralogical database led to a modest improvement in the simulation relative to station data even in dust-dominated regions, but could provide useful information on the chemical forms of Fe in dust for coupling with ocean biota models. We estimated a total Fe deposition sink of 8.4 Tg yr−1 over global oceans, 7% of which originated from the combustion sources. Our central estimates of Fe emissions from fossil fuel combustion (mainly from coal) are generally higher than those in previous studies, although they are within the uncertainty range of our estimates. In particular, the higher than previously estimated Fe emission from coal combustion implies a larger atmospheric anthropogenic input of soluble Fe to the northern Atlantic and northern Pacific Oceans, which is expected to enhance the biological carbon pump in those regions.

In order to separate phenol-acetophenone azeotrope in pyrolysis products of phenol tar, a process of heat integrated pressure swing distillation (PSD) is proposed for environmental protection and energy saving, where the overhead vapor of high-pressure column is taken as the heat source of low-pressure column reboilers. An activity coefficient model, i.e. universal quasi chemical (UNIQUAC), is chosen as the physical property method for simulation, the feasibility of PSD is studied by the thermodynamic analysis tool of ASPEN, and the pressure of each column was determined too. A general convergence strategy was proposed for PSD process simulation, which can also decouple the interaction between the convergence of recycle stream and the optimization of process parameters. To converge the heat integrated PSD process, a design specification was set to satisfy the mass balance requirement of the process. The simulation results show that 78,236 t/y condensate and 5,397 t/y steam are saved, and total annual cost is reduced by 9.4 % compared with conventional pressure swing distillation.

A new mixed discrete particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, i.e. DCH-PSO, was presented to solve mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems. The main contribution of DCH-PSO is to produce integer speed for discrete variable by randomly choosing it from an integer speed range, which is determined by analysing the velocity updating formula of original PSO, and the influence of historical velocity to the current one was implemented in a probabilistic way. At last, DCH-PSO was applied to synthesize mass exchange network (MEN) involving incompatible multicomponent. The design of orthogonal experiments was applied to study the effect of algorithm’s tuning parameters, and the results show that DCH-PSO is efficient for solving MEN synthesis problems.

Ionic liquid is a new type of green solvent, because of the nonvolatility, good dissolution properties, and high chemical stability. It is expected to replace the current extensive use of volatile solvents, to design environmental friendly new chemical process. However each cations and anions different from each other, combination into a huge number of ionic liquids, if its physical and chemical properties determined through the experiment, the cost is high. So it is highly needed to develop an effective and reliable method to predict the thermodynamic properties of the systems containing ionic liquid. Ammonia (NH3) solubility studies about the design and production of natural gas plays an important role. In this paper the solubility of NH3 in different ionic liquids are studied, and compared with the results predicted by UNIFAC model. The accurate calculation of the NH3 solubility in ILs is important in natural gas purification. UNIFAC model is selected to predict the solubility of NH3, which can decrease a plenty of experimental work in the laboratory. The new group NH3 is defined by regression of the experimental data collected from the literatures published to obtain the group-group interaction parameters between the components of NH3 and ionic liquids. The consistency test is carried out to examine the accuracy of prediction results. The solubility predicted by UNIFAC model is verified a perfect agreement with the experimental data provided in the literature at temperature range from 282.2 K to 355.8 K and pressure up to 25 bar, with an average relative deviation (ARD) less than 10 %. The results demonstrate that for system studied in this work, UNIFAC model can realize the solubility prediction successful. This predictive model is useful for predicting the NH3 solubility in imidazolium-based ionic liquids and providing the phase equilibrium data for the application of liquid natural gas and the relevant mass transfer separation in chemical engineering.

Long-range transport of black carbon (BC) is a growing concern as a result of the efficiency of BC in warming the climate and its adverse impact on human health. We study transpacific transport of BC during HIPPO-3 using a combination of inverse modeling and sensitivity analysis. We use the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model and its adjoint to constrain Asian BC emissions and estimate the source of BC over the North Pacific. We find that different sources of BC dominate the transport to the North Pacific during the southbound (29 March 2010) and northbound (13 April 2010) measurements in HIPPO-3. While biomass burning in Southeast Asia (SE) contributes about 60% of BC in March, more than 90% of BC comes from fossil fuel and biofuel combustion in East Asia (EA) during the April mission. GEOS-Chem simulations generally resolve the spatial and temporal variation of BC concentrations over the North Pacific, but are unable to reproduce the low and high tails of the observed BC distribution. We find that the optimized BC emissions derived from inverse modeling fail to improve model simulations significantly. This failure indicates that uncertainties in BC removal as well as transport, rather than in emissions, account for the major biases in GEOS-Chem simulations of BC over the North Pacific. The aging process, transforming BC from hydrophobic into hydrophilic form, is one of the key factors controlling wet scavenging and remote concentrations of BC. Sensitivity tests on BC aging (ignoring uncertainties of other factors controlling BC long range transport) suggest that in order to fit HIPPO-3 observations, the aging timescale of anthropogenic BC from EA may be several hours (faster than assumed in most global models), while the aging process of biomass burning BC from SE may occur much slower, with a timescale of a few days. To evaluate the effects of BC aging and wet deposition on transpacific transport of BC, we develop an idealized model of BC transport. We find that the mid-latitude air masses sampled during HIPPO-3 may have experienced a series of precipitation events, particularly near the EA and SE source region. Transpacific transport of BC is sensitive to BC aging when the aging rate is fast; this sensitivity peaks when the aging timescale is in the range of 1–1.5 d. Our findings indicate that BC aging close to the source must be simulated accurately at a process level in order to simulate better the global abundance and climate forcing of BC.

Multiannual satellite measurements of tropospheric NO2 columns are used for evaluation of CO2 emission changes in China in the period from 1996 to 2008. Indirect top-down annual estimates of CO2 emissions are derived from the satellite NO2 column measurements by means of a simple inverse modeling procedure involving simulations performed with the CHIMERE mesoscale chemistry–transport model and the CO2-to-NOx emission ratios from the Emission Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGAR) global anthropogenic emission inventory and Regional Emission Inventory in Asia (REAS). Exponential trends in the normalized time series of annual emissions are evaluated separately for the periods from 1996 to 2001 and from 2001 to 2008. The results indicate that the both periods manifest strong positive trends in the CO2 emissions, and that the trend in the second period was significantly larger than the trend in the first period. Specifically, the trends in the first and second periods are best estimated to be in the range from 3.7 to 8.3 and from 11.0 to 13.2% per year, respectively, taking into account statistical uncertainties and differences between the CO2-to-NOx emission ratios from the EDGAR and REAS inventories. Comparison of our indirect top-down estimates of the CO2 emission changes with the corresponding bottom-up estimates provided by the EDGAR (version 4.2) and Global Carbon Project (GCP) glomal emission inventories reveals that while acceleration of the CO2 emission growth in the considered period is a common feature of both kinds of estimates, nonlinearity in the CO2 emission changes may be strongly exaggerated in the global emission inventories. Specifically, the atmospheric NO2 observations do not confirm the existence of a sharp bend in the emission inventory data time series in the period from 2000 to 2002. A significant quantitative difference is revealed between the bottom-up and indirect top-down estimates of the CO2 emission trend in the period from 1996 to 2001 (specifically, the trend was not positive according to the global emission inventories, but is strongly positive in our estimates). These results confirm the findings of earlier studies that indicated probable large uncertainties in the energy production and other activity data for China from international energy statistics used as the input information in the global emission inventories. For the period from 2001 to 2008, some quantitative differences between the different kinds of estimates are found to be in the range of possible systematic uncertainties associated with our estimation method. In general, satellite measurements of tropospheric NO2 are shown to be a useful source of information on CO2 sources collocated with sources of nitrogen oxides; the corresponding potential of these measurements should be exploited further in future studies.

High-resolution mapping of fuel combustion and CO2 emission provides valuable information for modeling pollutant transport, developing mitigation policy, and for inverse modeling of CO2 fluxes. Previous global emission maps included only few fuel types, and emissions were estimated on a grid by distributing national fuel data on an equal per capita basis, using population density maps. This process distorts the geographical distribution of emissions within countries. In this study, a sub-national disaggregation method (SDM) of fuel data is applied to establish a global 0.1° × 0.1° geo-referenced inventory of fuel combustion (PKU-FUEL) and corresponding CO2 emissions (PKU-CO2) based upon 64 fuel sub-types for the year 2007. Uncertainties of the emission maps are evaluated using a Monte Carlo method. It is estimated that CO2 emission from combustion sources including fossil fuel, biomass, and solid wastes in 2007 was 11.2 Pg C yr−1 (9.1 Pg C yr−1 and 13.3 Pg C yr−1 as 5th and 95th percentiles). Of this, emission from fossil fuel combustion is 7.83 Pg C yr−1, which is very close to the estimate of the International Energy Agency (7.87 Pg C yr−1). By replacing national data disaggregation with sub-national data in this study, the average 95th minus 5th percentile ranges of CO2 emission for all grid points can be reduced from 417 to 68.2 Mg km−2 yr−1. The spread is reduced because the uneven distribution of per capita fuel consumptions within countries is better taken into account by using sub-national fuel consumption data directly. Significant difference in per capita CO2 emissions between urban and rural areas was found in developing countries (2.08 vs. 0.598 Mg C/(cap. × yr)), but not in developed countries (3.55 vs. 3.41 Mg C/(cap. × yr)). This implies that rapid urbanization of developing countries is very likely to drive up their emissions in the future.

Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) exert a significant influence on ambient air quality and regional climate. Recent field, laboratorial and modeling studies have confirmed that in-cloud processes contribute to a large fraction of SOA production with large space-time heterogeneity. This study evaluates the key factors that govern the production of cloud-process SOA (SOAcld) on a global scale based on the GFDL coupled chemistry-climate model AM3 in which full cloud chemistry is employed. The association between SOAcld production rate and six factors (i.e., liquid water content (LWC), total carbon chemical loss rate (TCloss), temperature, VOC/NOx, OH, and O3) is examined. We find that LWC alone determines the spatial pattern of SOAcld production, particularly over the tropical, subtropical and temperate forest regions, and is strongly correlated with SOAcld production. TCloss ranks the second and mainly represents the seasonal variability of vegetation growth. Other individual factors are essentially uncorrelated spatiotemporally to SOAcld production. We find that the rate of SOAcld production is simultaneously determined by both LWC and TCloss, but responds linearly to LWC and nonlinearly (or concavely) to TCloss. A parameterization based on LWC and TCloss can capture well the spatial and temporal variability of the process-based SOAcld formation (R2 = 0.5) and can be easily applied to global three dimensional models to represent the SOA production from cloud processes.

This REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes regional study provides a synthesis of the carbon balance of terrestrial ecosystems in East Asia, a region comprised of China, Japan, North and South Korea, and Mongolia. We estimate the current terrestrial carbon balance of East Asia and its driving mechanisms during 1990–2009 using three different approaches: inventories combined with satellite greenness measurements, terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycle models and atmospheric inversion models. The magnitudes of East Asia's terrestrial carbon sink from these three approaches are comparable: −0.293±0.033 PgC yr−1 from inventory–remote sensing model–data fusion approach, −0.413±0.141 PgC yr−1 (not considering biofuel emissions) or −0.224±0.141 PgC yr−1 (considering biofuel emissions) for carbon cycle models, and −0.270±0.507 PgC yr−1 for atmospheric inverse models. Here and in the following, the numbers behind ± signs are standard deviations. The ensemble of ecosystem modeling based analyses further suggests that at the regional scale, climate change and rising atmospheric CO2 together resulted in a carbon sink of −0.289±0.135 PgC yr−1, while land-use change and nitrogen deposition had a contribution of −0.013±0.029 PgC yr−1 and −0.107±0.025 PgC yr−1, respectively. Although the magnitude of climate change effects on the carbon balance varies among different models, all models agree that in response to climate change alone, southern China experienced an increase in carbon storage from 1990 to 2009, while northern East Asia including Mongolia and north China showed a decrease in carbon storage. Overall, our results suggest that about 13–27% of East Asia's CO2 emissions from fossil fuel burning have been offset by carbon accumulation in its terrestrial territory over the period from 1990 to 2009. The underlying mechanisms of carbon sink over East Asia still remain largely uncertain, given the diversity and intensity of land management processes, and the regional conjunction of many drivers such as nutrient deposition, climate, atmospheric pollution and CO2 changes, which cannot be considered as independent for their effects on carbon storage.

A global-scale three dimensional atmospheric transport and chemistry model was applied to simulate transpacific transport of Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) emitted from Asia. The model results were compared with observations at six monitoring sites. The annual mean and seasonal variation of transport patterns and the contributions of different Asian source regions to transpacific transport flux were investigated. The episodic nature of transpacific transport was also systematically explored. Interannual variability of transpacific transport of BaP was also assessed during the period of 1948–2007. Results showed that strong enhancements of modeled BaP occurred in an area bounded by 70–80° E and 100–120° E. Air containing these elevated BaP concentrations was then delivered eastward by westerly winds. When approaching the West Coast of North America, the descending atmospheric motion carried BaP-laden air into the lower atmosphere. The transpacific transport flux was 1.6 times higher in the winter than in the summer. East Asian emission dominates the transpacific transport flux with a contribution of about 97%. Near ground concentration of BaP induced by Asian sources in North America varied between 1–20 pg m−3. A case study for observation at Cheeka Peak Observatory during March 2002–May 2002 reveals the importance of warm conveyor belt for transpacific transport. The number of days with transpacific transport flux with a factor of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 larger than the running mean were 9.4%, 0.72%, 0.06% and 0.01%, respectively, implying a mild contribution of episodic transport to the long-term mean transport flux. Significant interannual fluctuation of transpacific transport of BaP was found, including a general decreasing trend during 1948–2007, and especially after the 1970s. The transpacific transport was found to be positively correlated with the Southern Oscillation Index.

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide presents a promising pathway to tackle global energy and environmental challenges. Porous carbon materials from metal‐organic frameworks exhibit high specific surface area, abundant active sites, and adjustable pore structure, demonstrating excellent electrocatalytic performance. With their abundant resources and tunability, copper‐based catalysts are well‐suited for efficient carbon dioxide conversion. However, the selectivity and stability of copper‐based catalysts is poor. This study presents the preparation of the first Cu‐doped ZIF‐8‐derived carbon materials and investigates their effect on electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction. At the optimal potential of −0.7 V vs. RHE, the CO Faradaic Efficiency (FE) of the Cu0.5‐N−C catalyst reaches 89 %. Furthermore, the electrochemical current density and CO FE of Cu0.5‐N−C catalyst remain nearly unchanged within 13 hours in 0.1 mol L−1 KHCO3 electrolyte. Compared to most of the reported copper‐based catalysts, Cu0.5‐N−C exhibits better stability. Characterization results show that Cu0.5‐N−C has a larger Cu‐N4, higher pyridinic N content, larger specific surface area, and average pore size, which help promote CO2 adsorption and enhance catalyst stability. This work provides new insights and pathways for electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction, with enormous potential to contribute to the global energy transition and environmental protection. The lineage relationship between blood and endothelial cells has been difficult to examine due to the multiphasic timing of hematopoiesis in the embryo. Here the authors use using in vivo barcoding technology to assess cell ancestry and show that blood and endothelial cells emerge through common (haemangioblast) or separate (mesenchymoangioblasts and haematomesoblasts) progenitors in the yolk sac.

Pleural tuberculosis (pTB) is a very common form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB). pTB diagnostics represents a major burning challenge worldwide due to the limitations of available conventional diagnostic tools. These latter include microscopic examination of the pleural fluid for acid-fast bacilli, mycobacterial culture of pleural fluid in solid or liquid media, sputum or pleural tissue, and histopathological examination of pleural tissue; these tests have recognized limitations for clinical use. Hence, to overcome these limitations, attention has been devoted to new nucleic acid amplification (NAA) diagnostic tests such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time PCR (RT-PCR), owing to their accuracy, rapidity, high sensitivity and specificity. Within this context, this prospective study was conducted to evaluate the performance of molecular diagnosis methods for differentiation between tuberculosis and non-tuberculosis pleural effusions. Fifty patients with pleural effusion were enrolled in this prospective study in Rabat, Morocco. The efficacy of conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the diagnostics of tuberculous pleurisy by targeting IS6110 and mycobacterial internal transcribed spacer (MYITS) was evaluated compared to histopathologic examination and culture data. Our results showed that IS6110 PCR could “rule in” pTB, the sensitivity and specificity being 41.6% and 85.7%, respectively. Therefore, the findings confirmed that molecular tests exert a relatively high specificity in EPTB but lower sensitivity, thus a positive test is considered as a pTB case whereas negative one cannot exclude the disease. Although the study was limited by a small sample size, it adds to the body of evidence of usefulness of molecular testing as adjuncts to histopathologic examination for accurate diagnosis of pTB, to treat timely and to avoid the emergence and spread of drug resistant pTB. However, further efforts should be made to increase the sensitivity of NAA methods and to identify the best molecular targets to be useful in clinical practice.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on ensiling characteristics, chemical composition and aerobic stability of King graß. Silage was prepared in a completely randomized design consisting of threetreatments and one control with three replicates as control (SK, adding 2ml/kg sterilizing water), Lactobacillus plantarum commercial bacteria (SKP), Lactobacillus plantarum isolated from Napier graß (SKN), Lactobacillus paraplanetarum isolated from Italian ryegraß (SKI). All silage were prepared using polyethylene terephthalate bottles, and incubated at room temperature for different ensiling days. The earlier and prolong stage of ensiling, dry matter (DM) was not significantly (P>0.05) affected and the level of pH, acetic acid (AA), NH3-N, water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) and butyric acid (BA) was significantly (P<0.05) decreased. Lactic acid (LA), ethanol and propionic acid (PA) was significantly (P<0.05) increased in treatments compared to SK. The dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), propionic acid (PA) neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) did not significantly (P<0.05) differ among the treatments at the end of ensiling. Ammonia nitrogen/total nitrogen (NH3-N/TN) and AA was significantly (P<0.05) decreased and LA, and ethanol was significantly (P<0.05) increased in the treatments. When the silos were exposure air, the pH was high and LA was numerically lowered but the WSC was not affected. The yeast, mold and LAB were changed significantly (P<0.05). It was suggested that adding lactic acid bacteria could improve the fermentation quality of King graß. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
