1. Computed tomography scan in the evaluation of patients with stroke

Abstract: Cerebrovascular accident is a frequent cause of death and disability in most parts of the globe. The incidence of cerebrovascular diseases increases with age and the number of strokes is projected to increase as the elderly population grows. This study was undertaken to determine the type of stroke and also to relate the risks factors associated with stroke. Hundred consecutive patients presenting with stroke in the emergency department / neurology clinic were subjected to computed tomography scan of the brain. Sixty – four patients had ischemic infarct and 36 had intracranial hemorrhage which included 2 patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage and 1 with underlying cavernous angioma. Ischemic stroke was thus commoner than hemorrhagic stroke. Previous infarct or lacunes were noted in 25 % of the patients presenting with stroke. Risk factors were present in most (77 %) of the patients presenting with stroke. Among the various risk factors, the single most common was smoking seen in 38 cases, followed by hypertension in 28 cases, obesity in 8 cases and diabetes in 3 cases. Twenty- one patients had multiple combinations of the above risk factors. Among the multiple risk factors, combination of alcohol and smoking was the commonest seen in 11 cases, followed by hypertension and obesity in 8 cases and alcohol with obesity in 2 cases. 2. Enlargement of the Pancreas in Children Diagnosed with Acute Pancreatitis: An Approach Based on P/V Ratio

Abstract: Background Acute pancreatitis is a reversible inflammation of the pancreatic parenchyma. Enlargement of the pancreas is often envisaged in such conditions. This study evaluates P/V ratio, as a marker to decide pancreatic enlargement in disease condition. Purpose The aim of this study was to develop imaging-based diagnostic criterion for acute pancreatitis in children based on P/V ratio. Material and Methods This study included 37 children with acute pancreatitis and 283 children asymptomatic for pancreatic disorders, from a single hospital center. The age of children ranged between 2 and 18 years. P/V ratio, which is the ratio of greatest anteroposterior dimension of the head, body, and tail of the pancreas relative to the transverse lumbar vertebral body, was obtained for each child through ultrasonographic examination. Age-adjusted receiver operating characteristics (AROC) analysis was performed on P/V ratio at presentation for each pancreatic region, and the sensitivity at 90% specificity, the threshold errors, and the corresponding cutoffs were obtained. The enlargement assessment was also done after clinical recovery by referring to the cutoffs of respective regions. Results AROC analysis for males and females resulted into a maximum sensitivity of 83.33 and 81.67%, respectively, at 90% specificity for head. The error thresholds for both the groups were same, i.e., 0.098, indicating that 90% of the observations had errors less than the threshold. The corresponding P/V ratio cutoff for males and females was 0.43 and 0.42, respectively. Conclusion Radiologists and clinicians can refer a cutoff value of 0.4 for each region, along with hypoechogenicity, to decide about enlargement of the pancreas in acute pancreatitis condition.

Abstract: Abstract DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6 $$\times $$ × 6 $$\times $$ × 6 m $$^3$$ 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019–2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties.

Abstract: Urticaria is an autoimmune disease and many patients are suffering from it. This research aims to investigate the development and characterization of an Ebastine-loaded transfersomal nanogel for the enhancement of bioavailability in the treatment of urticaria. The flexible transfersomes, consisting of the drug Ebastine, soya lecithin, and edge activator Tween 80, were prepared using the thin-film hydration method. The transfersomal nanogel was formulated by using the dispersion method and a suitable concentration of the gelling agent Carbopol 934. The transfersomes and their gel were evaluated for various parameters. The Ebastine-loaded transfersomes showed the highest entrapment efficiency, up to 79.92%. The polydispersity index (PDI) of the transfersomes was determined to be 0.103, and the zeta potential was determined to be −18.9 mV, indicating that the formulation was stable. The drug content of the transfersome gel was found to be 83.67%. The transfersomal gel formed using 1% Carbopol 934 showed the best results, showing in vitro release for up to 8 h and following a zero-order kinetic model. As per the microbial studies conducted, the Ebastine transfersomal gel has a good anti-microbial effect against S. aureus. These vesicular transfersomes are more flexible than other vesicular systems, making them excellent for skin penetration. In the future, this will be the best possible approach for the delivery of drugs via the transdermal route.

Abstract: Introduction: The maxillary sinuses (MS) are of particular importance to dentist because of their close proximity to the teeth and their associated structures, so increased risk of maxillary sinusitis has been reported with periapical abscess, periodontal diseases, dental trauma, tooth extraction, and implant placement. Complications of MS are related to its anatomic and pathologic variations. Thus, study was conducted to assess the prevalence of anatomic variations in MS by using cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT). Aims and Objectives: To determine different anatomical variations in MS by using CBCT. Materials and Methods: CBCT scans of 150 subjects were collected between the age group of 18 years to 70 years and were analyzed for MS anatomical variation. Statistical Analysis: The distribution of age, sex, reasons for CBCT, and dimensions of sinus calculated using descriptive statistics and distribution of other anatomic findings using Chi-square test. Results: Prevalence of obstructed ostium is 23.3% and septa is 66.7%. Average height, width, and antero-posterior (A-P) dimensions for right MS are 34.13 mm, 26.09 mm, 37.39 mm and that of left MS are 33.24 mm, 26.11 mm, 37.72 mm respectively. Average distance between lower border of ostium to sinus floor in right MS is 32.17 mm and that of left is 32.69 mm. Average diameter of ostium in right MS is 1.88 mm and that of left is 1.67 mm. Conclusion: Study highlights the importance of accurate assessment of MS and its variations in order to properly differentiate the pathologic lesions from anatomic variations avoiding unnecessary surgical explorations.

Abstract: Nematodes are probably the most widespread and abundant group of animal often occurring in huge numbers in very diverse environments. The largest number of helminthic parasites of humans belongs to the phylum nematoda and Ascaris lumbricoides is the most common of human helminthic parasites. Commonly known as roundworm, Ascaris lumbricoides is cosmopolitan, especially prevalent in the tropical countries like India. The adult roundworm commonly lives in small intestine, retaining its position by the virtue of its own muscle tone. Eggs of roundworm are bile stained, appearing yellowish brown in colour. Roundworm is a restless wanderer, showing great inquisitiveness as it tends to move itself from the original site, and get into any aperture it may find on its way. So it’s quite possible to encounter this commonest and largest intestinal nematode of humans at some odd sites in the body. Here, we are presenting a very rare case of finding colourless (i.e., non bile stained) eggs with a female roundworm isolated from an ectopic site.

Abstract: Harpin, an elicitor molecule of bacterial origin induces hypersensitive response (HR) in non-host plants. In an attempt to induce male sterility, harpin was tagged with a signal peptide and expressed downstream to tapetum-specific TA29 promoter resulting in extracellular secretion, subsequent degeneration of tapetum and development of male sterility in tobacco. Putative transgenics were analyzed by PCR amplification of transgene, semiquantitative RT-PCR analysis from total RNA extracts from anther tissue with transgene specific probe, Western blotting using polyclonal antibody raised against harpin, by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and by confocal microscopy of anthers and pollen at various stages of development. Varying degrees of male sterility (30-100 %) was observed with plants showing complete and partial male sterility as well as several morphological variations were seen especially in leaves and flowers. Further, some of the transgenics showed un-induced of HR-like local lesions in the vegetative tissues. HarpinPss got deposited on the pollen grains upon tapetal degeneration resulting in significant alterations in the morphology of pollen cell wall. However, megagametogenesis was not affected in complete and partial male sterile plants and female gametes were completely fertile. The complete male sterility was attributed to premature tapetal cell death due to sufficient extracellular harpinPss accumulation whereas insufficient protein content might be the reason for partial male sterility. These findings indicate the possible use of cytotoxic harpinPss for the development of male sterile plants.

Abstract: Introduction: Removable dentures are subjected to fracture due to many causes and reasons. Due to sudden fracture of denture, the individual's social and mental well-being is affected. As Prosthodontists, we must investigate and solve the problems pertaining to removable dentures. Aim: To investigate the incidence, causes and types of removable denture fractures and to determine the association between different variables and fractured removable dentures. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional clinical survey was carried out in Department of Prosthodontics in PMNM Dental College and Hospital, Bagalkot, North Karnataka, India. A total of 214 adult patients within the age group of 25-80 years were included in the study and assessed over a period from August 2018 to February 2020, by four clinicians with the help of questionnaire. Ten parameters namely gender, age of wearer, type of denture, Kennedy's classification, age of denture, cause of fracture, type of fracture, number of previous fracture, retention and type of antagonist were evaluated. The participants responded to all the questions and the data obtained was organised in a tabular form and statistically analysed by Chi-square test. Results: Amongst a total of 214 adult patients (142 males and 72 females), the results showed that the incidence of removable denture fracture was seen higher in male patients (66.36%) than in female patients (33.64%). Age group greater than 60 years showed higher incidence 108 (50.47%) of denture fractures. The lower complete dentures were the most commonly fractured removable dentures 96 (44.86%). Acrylic denture base resin fracture was most frequent denture fracture type 144 (67.29%). Fractures for the first time were higher in number compared to previous 1, 2 or 3 fractures. Higher incidence of fracture was seen in poorly retained dentures 111 (51.87%) and in dentures with complete denture as antagonist 163 (76.17%). The variables like gender of wearer (p-value=0.001), age of wearer (p-value=0.014), age of denture (p-value=0.019), retention quality of denture (p-value=0.017) and type of antagonist (p-value=0.001) showed a statistically significant relation with denture fracture. Conclusion: Improvement in the processing techniques and type of resin used along with innovative methods of increasing the fracture toughness of removable dentures is of great importance to reduce the incidence of denture fracture. Materials and Method: Serum samples were collected from patients and were processed by Ig M Capture ELISA (kit manufactured and supplied by NIV, Pune) as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Vector surveillance was undertaken in the affected area and vector control measures were initiated. Results: Among 28 samples, 15(53.57%) showed the presence of JEV antibodies. 86.6% paediatric population was affected. Culex density crossed critical level of 10%. Abstract: Background: Acute poisoning is one of the major contributors of heath problem causing morbidity and mortality in the emergency of the hospital. The study focused on the demographic and epidemiological aspects of all the poisoning cases that came to Emergency of TUTH. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional retrospective data collection of all poisoning cases recorded in hospital from April 2016 to March 2018. Hospital records of all poisoning cases were used to extract demographic and other data such as poisonous agents used, circumstance of poisoning, route and outcome of poisoning. The data analysis was done in Microsoft Excel. Results: The total number of cases was 641 out of which 40 cases were excluded from the study. Of 601 cases, males were 42.09% and females were 57.90%. The most common age group for both male and female was 16-26 years group and male to female ratio was 1:1.3. The most common circumstance of poisoning was deliberate self-harm which was 91.68% followed by accidental which was 4.6%. The common route of administration was ingestion at 99.91%. The mortality in the Emergency was 5.15% and total of 75.04% cases were admitted in observation after primary management in ER and discharged from the observation after improvement and psychiatric evaluation. The most common toxicology agent was pesticide at 52.57%followed by pharmaceuticals at 25.45%. Conclusions: Pesticides are the major cause of poisoning and accounts for majority of cases of toxicology followed by pharmaceuticals. The study also concludes that the young age group is more vulnerable to poisoning, hence strong regulatory measures are required for control of easy accessibility of these substances. 32. Health status of free-ranging ring-necked pheasant chicks (Phasianus colchicus) in North-Western Germany.

Abstract: Being a typical ground-breeding bird of the agricultural landscape in Germany, the pheasant has experienced a strong and persistent population decline with a hitherto unexplained cause. Contributing factors to the ongoing negative trend, such as the effects of pesticides, diseases, predation, increase in traffic and reduced fallow periods, are currently being controversially discussed. In the present study, 62 free-ranging pheasant chicks were caught within a two-year period in three federal states of Germany; Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein. The pheasant chicks were divided into three age groups to detect differences in their development and physical constitution. In addition, pathomorphological, parasitological, virological, bacteriological and toxicological investigations were performed. The younger chicks were emaciated, while the older chicks were of moderate to good nutritional status. However, the latter age group was limited to a maximum of three chicks per hen, while the youngest age class comprised up to ten chicks. The majority of chicks suffered from dermatitis of the periocular and caudal region of the head (57-94%) of unknown origin. In addition, intestinal enteritis (100%), pneumonia (26%), hepatitis (24%), perineuritis (6%), tracheitis (24%), muscle degeneration (1%) and myositis (1%) were found. In 78% of the cases, various Mycoplasma spp. were isolated. Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) was not detected using an MG-specific PCR. Parasitic infections included Philopteridae (55%), Coccidia (48%), Heterakis/Ascaridia spp. (8%) and Syngamus trachea (13%). A total of 8% of the chicks were Avian metapneumovirus (AMPV) positive using RT-PCR, 16% positive for infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) using RT-PCR, and 2% positive for haemorrhagic enteritis virus (HEV) using PCR. All samples tested for avian encephalomyelitis virus (AEV), infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) or infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) were negative. The pool samples of the ten chicks were negative for all acid, alkaline-free and derivative substances, while two out of three samples tested were positive for the herbicide glyphosate. Pheasant chick deaths may often have been triggered by poor nutritional status, probably in association with inflammatory changes in various tissues and organs as well as bacterial and parasitic pathogens. Theses impacts may have played a major role in the decline in pheasant populations.

34. Catastrophic Drop Breakup in Electric Field.

Abstract: We report novel observations revealing the catastrophic breakup of water drops containing surfactant molecules, which are suspended in oil and subjected to an electric field of strength ∼105V/m. The observed breakup was distinctly different from the gradual end pinch-off or tip-streaming modes reported earlier in the literature. There was no observable characteristic deformation of the drop prior to breakup. The time scales involved in the breakup and the resultant droplet sizes were much smaller in the phenomenon observed by us. We hypothesize that this mode of drop breakup is obtained by the combined effect of an external electric field that imposes tensile stresses on the surface of the drop, and characteristic stress−strain behavior for tensile deformation exhibited by the liquid drop in the presence of a suitable surfactant, which not only lowers the interfacial tension (and hence the cohesive strength) of the drop but also simultaneously renders the interface nonductile or brittle at high enough concentration. We have identified the relevant thermodynamic parameter, viz., the sum of interfacial tension, σ, and the Gibbs elasticity, ε, which plays a decisive role in determining the mode of drop breakup. The parameter (ε + σ) represents the internal restoration stress of a liquid drop opposing rapid, short-time-scale perturbations or local deformations in the drop shape under the influence of external impulses or stresses. A thermodynamic “state” diagram of (ε + σ) versus interfacial area per surfactant molecule adsorbed at the drop interface shows a “maximum” at a critical transition concentration (ctc). Below this concentration of the surfactant, the drop undergoes tip streaming or pinch off. Above this concentration, the drop may undergo catastrophic disintegration if the external stress is high enough to overcome the ultimate cohesive strength of the drop’s interface. Abstract: More than 5 million tonnes of metal salts of fatty acids are manufactured and used worldwide every year, to create a range of soft condensed-matter products such as bar soaps, stick deodorants, personal care creams, toothpastes, and lubricant greases. These molecules, popularly known as soaps, are capable of forming a plethora of states and self-assembled aggregates such as micelles, liquid crystals, solid crystals, and gels, whose characteristic sizes or domain sizes can span from nanometers to centimeters. The type and mix of the phases formed, their morphologies, and their states of dispersion or the nature of their further supra-assemblies dictate the underlying micromechanical structures of products, which, in turn, are responsible for their optical, structural, and rheological properties. Developing processing guidelines to manipulate characteristic micromechanical structures is therefore key to obtaining the desired look, touch, feel, and function of these products. The article discusses a few illustrative examples of these structure−property relationships demonstrated by multiscale soap assemblies. Observations of some novel tertiary structures formed by crystallizing soap fibers at the air−water interface, serendipitously discovered by us in the recent past, are also discussed, to illustrate the richness and mysteries of the well-studied and so-called mature subject of soaps. Abstract: We present optical studies of two different size distributions of silver triangular nanoprisms, one with a dipole resonance at 520 nm and the other with a dipole resonance at 650 nm, placed in different media. Significant wavelength-dependent depolarization of scattered light from the silver nanoprisms suspended in water indicates strong interference of multiple surface plasmon resonant modes in the same particle. We use this depolarization as a probe of light scattering by the nanoprisms in a lipid solution due to the rejection of a polarized background scattering. Also, the silver nanoprisms were embedded in a polyvinyl alcohol polymer matrix and oriented by stretching the polymer/nanoprism nanocomposite films. We observe significantly increased linear dichroism in the region associated with the plasmonic in-plane dipole mode upon stretching. Additionally, there is a weaker linear dichroism in the region associated with out-of-plane modes, which vanish in the extinction spectrum of the stretched nanocomposite film. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Abstract The Pandora Software Development Kit and algorithm libraries provide pattern-recognition logic essential to the reconstruction of particle interactions in liquid argon time projection chamber detectors. Pandora is the primary event reconstruction software used at ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment far detector. ProtoDUNE-SP, located at CERN, is exposed to a charged-particle test beam. This paper gives an overview of the Pandora reconstruction algorithms and how they have been tailored for use at ProtoDUNE-SP. In complex events with numerous cosmic-ray and beam background particles, the simulated reconstruction and identification efficiency for triggered test-beam particles is above 80% for the majority of particle type and beam momentum combinations. Specifically, simulated 1 GeV/c charged pions and protons are correctly reconstructed and identified with efficiencies of 86.1 $$\pm 0.6$$ ± 0.6 % and 84.1 $$\pm 0.6$$ ± 0.6 %, respectively. The efficiencies measured for test-beam data are shown to be within 5% of those predicted by the simulation.

Abstract: Abstract Liquid argon time projection chamber detector technology provides high spatial and calorimetric resolutions on the charged particles traversing liquid argon. As a result, the technology has been used in a number of recent neutrino experiments, and is the technology of choice for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). In order to perform high precision measurements of neutrinos in the detector, final state particles need to be effectively identified, and their energy accurately reconstructed. This article proposes an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network to perform the classification of energy deposits and reconstructed particles as track-like or arising from electromagnetic cascades. Results from testing the algorithm on experimental data from ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype of the DUNE far detector, are presented. The network identifies track- and shower-like particles, as well as Michel electrons, with high efficiency. The performance of the algorithm is consistent between experimental data and simulation.

Abstract: Abstract Background The metal ion complexes of meropenem and cefixime with cadmium, silver, palladium, zinc, nickel, cobalt and copper were synthesized and characterized by UV, FTIR and H1-NMR spectrophotometry. The antibacterial effects of the complexes were studied using cup and plate method against S. aureus, B. subtilis, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae for normal and resistant strains of bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the metal ion complexes was determined by broth dilution method. Results UV spectroscopic studies suggested that meropenem ligand form complex with different metal ions and FTIR spectrum confirmed the proposed structure. Similarly, UV spectrum of cefixime metal ion complexes at λ max 202–295 nm and meropenem metal ion complexes at λ max 249–304 nm was observed in all the complexes. FTIR peaks for a proposed structure were observed in all the meropenem and cefixime metal ion, indicating the formation of complexes, and retained the functional groups of drugs. Meropenem as well as cefixime metal ion complexes exhibited more antibacterial activity against all the selected bacterial strains. Specifically, the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration against P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae was observed to be 100 and 150 μg/ml, respectively. Conclusion The present study concluded that the meropenem and cefixime metal complexes can exhibit the better treatment than individual drug on normal as well as resistant bacteria.

Abstract: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection leads to the development of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Lifelong treatment with nucleotides/nucleoside antiviral agents is effective at suppressing HBV replication, however, adherence to daily therapy can be challenging. This review discusses recent advances in the development of long-acting formulations for HBV treatment and prevention, which could potentially improve adherence. Promising new compounds that target distinct steps of the virus life cycle are summarized. In addition to treatments that suppress viral replication, curative strategies are focused on the elimination of covalently closed circular DNA and the inactivation of the integrated viral DNA from infected hepatocytes. We highlight promising long-acting antivirals and genome editing strategies for the elimination or deactivation of persistent viral DNA products in development.

Abstract: Flavonoids and polyphenolic compounds play a key role in wound healing cycle modulation. Propolis, a natural bee product, has been widely reported as an enriched source of polyphenols and flavonoids as important chemical constituents and for its wound healing potential. The goal of this study was to develop and characterize a propolis-based polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel composition with wound healing potential. To understand the impacts of critical material attributes and process parameters, formulation development was carried out using a design of experiment approach. A preliminary phytochemical analysis of Indian propolis extract showed the presence of flavonoids (23.61 ± 0.0452 mg equivalent of quercetin/g) and polyphenols (34.82 ± 0.0785 mg equivalent of gallic acid/g), both of which aid in wound healing and skin tissue regeneration. The pH, viscosity, and in vitro release of the hydrogel formulation were also studied. The burn wound healing model results revealed significant (p < 0.0001) wound contraction by propolis hydrogel (93.58 + 0.15%) with rapid re-epithelialization relative to 5% w/w povidone iodine ointment USP (Cipladine®) (95.39 + 0.16%). The excision wound healing model confirms significant (p < 0.0001) wound contraction by propolis hydrogel (91.45 + 0.29%) with accelerated re-epithelialization comparable to 5% w/w povidone iodine ointment USP (Cipladine®) (94.38 + 0.21%). The developed formulation offers promise for wound healing, which may be investigated further for clinical research.

Abstract: Abstract For the first time, electrical conduction mechanisms in the disordered material system is experimentally studied for p-type amorphous germanium (a-Ge) used for high-purity Ge detector contacts. The localization length and the hopping parameters in a-Ge are determined using the surface leakage current measured from three high-purity planar Ge detectors. The temperature dependent hopping distance and hopping energy are obtained for a-Ge fabricated as the electrical contact materials for high-purity Ge planar detectors. As a result, we find that the hopping energy in a-Ge increases as temperature increases while the hopping distance in a-Ge decreases as temperature increases. The localization length of a-Ge is on the order of $$2.13^{-0.05}_{+0.07}\mathrm{{A}}^\circ $$ 2 . 13 + 0.07 - 0.05 A ∘ to $$5.07^{-0.83}_{+2.58}\mathrm{{A}}^\circ $$ 5 . 07 + 2.58 - 0.83 A ∘ , depending on the density of states near the Fermi energy level within bandgap. Using these parameters, we predict that the surface leakage current from a Ge detector with a-Ge contacts can be much smaller than one yocto amp (yA) at helium temperature, suitable for rare-event physics searches.

45. Assessment of Incidence, Causes and Types of Removable Denture Fractures: A Cross-sectional Clinical Survey from Northern Karnataka, India

Abstract: Introduction: Removable dentures are subjected to fracture due to many causes and reasons. Due to sudden fracture of denture, the individual’s social and mental well-being is affected. As Prosthodontists, we must investigate and solve the problems pertaining to removable dentures. Aim: To investigate the incidence, causes and types of removable denture fractures and to determine the association between different variables and fractured removable dentures. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional clinical survey was carried out in Department of Prosthodontics in PMNM Dental College and Hospital, Bagalkot, North Karnataka, India. A total of 214 adult patients within the age group of 25-80 years were included in the study and assessed over a period from August 2018 to February 2020, by four clinicians with the help of questionnaire. Ten parameters namely gender, age of wearer, type of denture, Kennedy’s classification, age of denture, cause of fracture, type of fracture, number of previous fracture, retention and type of antagonist were evaluated. The participants responded to all the questions and the data obtained was organised in a tabular form and statistically analysed by Chi-square test. Results: Amongst a total of 214 adult patients (142 males and 72 females), the results showed that the incidence of removable denture fracture was seen higher in male patients (66.36%) than in female patients (33.64%). Age group greater than 60 years showed higher incidence 108 (50.47%) of denture fractures. The lower complete dentures were the most commonly fractured removable dentures 96 (44.86%). Acrylic denture base resin fracture was most frequent denture fracture type 144 (67.29%). Fractures for the first time were higher in number compared to previous 1, 2 or 3 fractures. Higher incidence of fracture was seen in poorly retained dentures 111 (51.87%) and in dentures with complete denture as antagonist 163 (76.17%). The variables like gender of wearer (p-value=0.001), age of wearer (p-value=0.014), age of denture (p-value=0.019), retention quality of denture (p-value=0.017) and type of antagonist (p-value=0.001) showed a statistically significant relation with denture fracture. Conclusion: Improvement in the processing techniques and type of resin used along with innovative methods of increasing the fracture toughness of removable dentures is of great importance to reduce the incidence of denture fracture.

46. Effect of intensifying additives on the degradation of thiamethoxam using ultrasound cavitation

Abstract: The present study has investigated the degradation of thiamethoxam using ultrasound cavitation (US) operated at a frequency of 20 kHz and its combination with intensifying additives viz. hydrogen peroxide, Fenton and photo-Fenton reagent. At the outset, the performance of US (20 kHz) has been maximised by the optimization of process parameters. Highest rate of degradation of thiamethoxam was observed at the optimum ultrasonic power density of 0.22 W/mL, thiamethoxam concentration of 10 ppm and the pH of 2. The established optimum values of operating parameters were used further in case of combined treatment approaches. The effect of concentration of H2O2 on the rate of degradation of thiamethoxam in the case of US + H2O2 process has confirmed the existence of optimum concentration of H2O2 with the ratio of thiamethoxam: H2O2 as 1:10. US + Fenton process indicated the optimal molar ratio of FeSO4·7H2O:H2O2 as 1:15. The combined processes of US + H2O2, US + Fenton and US + photo-Fenton have resulted in the extent of degradation of 20.47 ± 0.61%, 34.41 ± 1.03% and 85.17 ± 2.56% respectively after 45 min. of operation. These combined processes lead to the synergistic index of 2.04 ± 0.06, 2.26 ± 0.07 and 2.42 ± 0.07 in case of US + H2O2, US + Fenton and US + photo-Fenton processes respectively over only US/stirring treatment with the additive. Additionally, the extent of mineralization and the energy efficiency of individual and combined processes have been compared. US + photo-Fenton process has been found to be the best strategy for effective degradation of thiamethoxam with a significant intensification benefit. The by-products formed during the ultrasonic degradation of thiamethoxam have been identified by using LC-MS/MS analysis.

Abstract: Objectives: This study aims at determining the normal pancreatic dimensions in pediatric age groups considering demographic parameters and thus developing percentile reference curves for normal pancreatic dimensions in Indian children. Setting and Design: It is a cross-sectional study. Materials and Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was planned at a children hospital during July 2016–December 2017, in which the pancreatic dimensions of 1078 normal children in the age range of 1 month to 19 years were obtained through abdominal ultrasonography (USG). The demographic details like age and gender were obtained for each child. Statistical Analysis Used: Percentile reference curves were obtained with reference to age for each gender type independently. Generalized additive models for location, scale, and shape were used to obtain percentile plots for each pancreatic part. Results: The mean age of children was 6.65 ± 4.43 years and the male-to-female ratio was 1.63:1. The head, body, and tail dimensions increased with the age. For head, up to 25th percentile, the curves were similar for both genders, while subsequent curves were higher in males as compared to females. Similar was the observation for body of pancreas. For tail, up to 75th percentile, the curves were similar for both genders. Conclusion: The normal ranges can be supportive in diagnosis of illness related to pancreas. The dimensions within 5–95th percentile along with iso-echogenicity can be regarded as normal, while the dimensions beyond these limits along with change of echogenicity can be suspected for pancreatic disorders.

Abstract: The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an international, world-class experiment aimed at exploring fundamental questions about the universe that are at the forefront of astrophysics and particle physics research. DUNE will study questions pertaining to the preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe, the dynamics of supernovae, the subtleties of neutrino interaction physics, and a number of beyond the Standard Model topics accessible in a powerful neutrino beam. A critical component of the DUNE physics program involves the study of changes in a powerful beam of neutrinos, i.e., neutrino oscillations, as the neutrinos propagate a long distance. The experiment consists of a near detector, sited close to the source of the beam, and a far detector, sited along the beam at a large distance. This document, the DUNE Near Detector Conceptual Design Report (CDR), describes the design of the DUNE near detector and the science program that drives the design and technology choices. The goals and requirements underlying the design, along with projected performance are given. It serves as a starting point for a more detailed design that will be described in future documents.
