Abstract

Abstract Topological phases are robust against weak perturbations, but break down when disorder becomes sufficiently strong. However, moderate disorder can also induce topologically nontrivial phases. Thouless pumping, as a (1+1)D counterpart of the integer quantum Hall effect, is one of the simplest manifestations of topology. Here, we report experimental observations of the competition and interplay between Thouless pumping and disorder on a 41-qubit superconducting quantum processor. We improve a Floquet engineering technique to realize cycles of adiabatic pumping by simultaneously varying the on-site potentials and the hopping couplings. We demonstrate Thouless pumping in the presence of disorder and show its breakdown as the strength of disorder increases. Moreover, we observe two types of topological pumping that are induced by on-site potential disorder and hopping disorder, respectively. In particular, an intrinsic topological pump that is induced by quasi-periodic hopping disorder has never been experimentally realized before. Our highly controllable system provides a valuable quantum simulating platform for studying various aspects of topological physics in the presence of disorder.

Abstract

We explore a topology-localization phase diagram by simulating a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with quasiperiodic disorder using a programmable superconducting simulator. We experimentally map out and identify various trivial and topological phases with extended, critical, and localized bulk states. We find that with increasing disorder strength, some extended states can be first replaced by localized states and then by critical states before the system finally becomes fully localized. The critical states exhibit typical features such as multifractality and self-similarity, which lead to surprisingly rich phases with different types of mobility edges and scaling behaviors on the phase boundaries. Our results shed light on the investigation of the topological and localization phenomena in condensed-matter physics.

Abstract

The concept of Maxwell demon plays an essential role in connecting thermodynamics and information theory, while entanglement and nonlocality are fundamental features of quantum theory. Given the rapid advancements in the field of quantum information science, there is a growing interest and significance in investigating the connection between Maxwell demon and quantum correlation. The majority of research endeavors thus far have been directed toward the extraction of work from quantum correlation through the utilization of Maxwell demon. Recently, a novel concept called Maxwell demon-assisted Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering has been proposed, which suggests that it is possible to simulate quantum correlation by doing work. This seemingly counterintuitive conclusion is attributed to the fact that Alice and Bob need classical communication during EPR steering task, a requirement that does not apply in the Bell test. In this study, we demonstrate Maxwell demon-assisted EPR steering with superconducting quantum circuits. By compiling and optimizing a quantum circuit to be implemented on a 2D superconducting chip, we were able to achieve a steering parameter of S_{2}=0.770±0.005 in the case of two measurement settings, which surpasses the classical bound of 1/sqrt[2] by 12.6 standard deviations. In addition, experimental observations have revealed a linear correlation between the nonlocality demonstrated in EPR steering and the work done by the demon. Considering the errors in practical operation, the experimental results are highly consistent with theoretical predictions. Our findings not only suggest the presence of a Maxwell demon loophole in the EPR steering, but also contribute to a deeper comprehension of the interplay between quantum correlation, information theory, and thermodynamics.

Abstract

Identifying Galactic PeVatrons (PeV particle accelerators) from ultrahigh-energy (UHE, >100 TeV) γ -ray sources plays a crucial role in revealing the origin of Galactic cosmic rays. The UHE source 1LHAASO J1857+0203u is suggested to be associated with HESS J1858+020, which may be attributed to the possible PeVatron candidate supernova remnant (SNR) G35.6−0.4 or H ii region G35.6−0.5. We perform detailed analysis on the very-high-energy and UHE γ -ray emissions toward this region with data from the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). 1LHAASO J1857+0203u is detected with a significance of 11.6 σ above 100 TeV, indicating the presence of a PeVatron. It has an extent of ∼0 $\mathop{.}\limits^{\unicode{x000B0}}$ 18 with a power-law (PL) spectral index of ∼2.5 at 1–25 TeV and pointlike emission with a PL spectral index of ∼3.2 above 25 TeV. Using archival CO and H i data, we identify some molecular and atomic clouds that may be associated with the TeV γ -ray emissions. Our modeling indicates that the TeV γ -ray emissions are unlikely to arise from clouds illuminated by the protons that escaped from SNR G35.6−0.4. In the scenario in which H ii region G35.6−0.5 could accelerate particles to the UHE band, the observed GeV–TeV γ -ray emission could be well explained by a hadronic model with a PL spectral index of ∼2.0 and cutoff energy of ∼450 TeV. However, an origin in an evolved pulsar wind nebula cannot be ruled out.

Abstract

The first source catalog of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) reported the detection of a very high energy gamma-ray source, 1LHAASO J1219+2915. This Letter presents a further detailed study of the spectral and temporal behavior of this pointlike source. The best-fit position of the TeV source (R.A. = 185.°05 ± 0.°04, decl. = 29.°25 ± 0.°03) is compatible with NGC 4278 within ∼0.°03. Variation analysis shows an indication of variability on a timescale of a few months in the TeV band, which is consistent with low-frequency observations. Based on these observations, we report the detection of TeV γ -ray emissions from this low-luminosity active galactic nucleus. The observation by LHAASO's Water Cherenkov Detector Array during the active period has a significance level of 8.8 σ with a best-fit photon spectral index Γ = 2.56 ± 0.14 and a flux f _1–10 TeV = (7.0 ± 1.1 _sta ± 0.35 _syst ) × 10 ^−13 photons cm ^−2 s ^−1 , or approximately 5% of the Crab Nebula. The discovery of VHE gamma-ray emission from NGC 4278 indicates that compact, weak radio jets can efficiently accelerate particles and emit TeV photons.

Abstract

The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitter established by observations with ground-based gamma-ray detectors. Here we report the long-term monitoring of M87 from 2021 to 2024 with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). M87 has been detected by LHAASO with a statistical significance ∼ 9 σ . The observed energy spectrum extends to 20 TeV, with a possible hardening at ∼20 TeV and then a clear softening at higher energies. Assuming that the intrinsic spectrum is described by a single power law up to 20 TeV, a tight upper bound on the extragalactic background light intensity is obtained. A strong VHE flare lasting 8 days, with a rise time of ${\tau }_{r}^{\mathrm{rise}}=1.05\pm 0.49$ days and decay time of ${\tau }_{d}^{\mathrm{decay}}=2.17\pm 0.58$ days, was found in early 2022. A possible GeV flare is seen also in Fermi Large Area Telescope data during the VHE flare period. The variability time as short as 1 day seen in the LHAASO data suggests a compact emission region with a size of ∼3 × 10 ^15 δ cm ( δ being the Doppler factor of the emitting region), corresponding to a few Schwarzschild radii of the central supermassive black hole in M87. The continuous monitoring of the source reveals a duty cycle of ∼1% for VHE flares with a flux above 10 ^−11 erg cm ^−2 s ^−1 .

Abstract

Abstract Quantum simulation enables study of many-body systems in non-equilibrium by mapping to a controllable quantum system, providing a powerful tool for computational intractable problems. Here, using a programmable quantum processor with a chain of 10 superconducting qubits interacted through tunable couplers, we simulate the one-dimensional generalized Aubry-André-Harper model for three different phases, i.e., extended, localized and critical phases. The properties of phase transitions and many-body dynamics are studied in the presence of quasi-periodic modulations for both off-diagonal hopping coefficients and on-site potentials of the model controlled respectively by adjusting strength of couplings and qubit frequencies. We observe the spin transport for initial single- and multi-excitation states in different phases, and characterize phase transitions by experimentally measuring dynamics of participation entropies. Our experimental results demonstrate that the recently developed tunable coupling architecture of superconducting processor extends greatly the simulation realms for a wide variety of Hamiltonians, and can be used to study various quantum and topological phenomena.

Abstract

We present the first catalog of very-high-energy and ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory. The catalog was compiled using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array from 2021 March to 2022 September and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array from 2020 January to 2022 September. This catalog represents the main result from the most sensitive large coverage gamma-ray survey of the sky above 1 TeV, covering decl. from −20° to 80°. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with an extended size smaller than 2° and a significance of detection at >5 σ . Based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Among the 90 sources, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ( E > 100 TeV) emission at >4 σ significance level. We provide the position, extension, and spectral characteristics of all the sources in this catalog.

Abstract

Abstract The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels and SiPMs pose challenges (e.g. dynamic range, dark count rate, assembly techniques). In this paper, we present the design features, manufacturing techniques and performances of these cameras. Finally, the test facilities, the test methods and results of SiPMs in the cameras are reported here.

Abstract

Gamma rays from HESS J1849−000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches 4.0 σ and 4.4 σ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of the Gaussian standard deviation σ . The energy spectrum measured between 40 TeV < E < 320 TeV for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of ${dN}/{dE}={(2.86\pm 1.44)\times {10}^{-16}(E/40\,\mathrm{TeV})}^{-2.24\pm 0.41}\,{\mathrm{TeV}}^{-1}\,{\mathrm{cm}}^{-2}\,{{\rm{s}}}^{-1}$ . The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV ( E < 1 TeV) to sub-PeV (100 TeV < E < 1 PeV) ranges, including the results of previous studies, can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, i.e., inverse Compton scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849−0001. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can also be modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray-emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons E _p,cut is estimated as ${\mathrm{log}}_{10}({E}_{{\rm{p}},\mathrm{cut}}/\mathrm{TeV})={3.73}_{-0.66}^{+2.98}$ , suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. Our study thus proposes that HESS J1849−000 should be further investigated as a new candidate as a Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, or “PeVatron.”

Abstract

Observation of high energy and very high emission from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is crucial to study the gigantic explosion and the underline processes. With a large field-of-view and almost full duty cycle, the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), is appropriate to monitor the very high energy emission from unpredictable transients such as GRBs. Nevertheless, the main issue for an extensive air shower array is the high energy threshold which limits the horizon of the detector. To address this issue a new trigger method is developed in this article to lower the energy threshold of WCDA for GRB observation. The proposed method significantly improves the detection efficiency of WCDA for gamma-rays around the GRB direction at 10-300 GeV. The sensitivity of the WCDA for GRB detection with the new trigger method is estimated. The achieved sensitivity of the quarter WCDA array above 10 GeV is comparable with that of Fermi-LAT. The data analysis process and corresponding fluence upper limit for GRB 190719C is presented as an example.

Abstract

The main scientific goal of LHAASO-WCDA is to survey gamma-ray sources with energy from 100 GeV to 30 TeV. To observe high-energy shower events, especially to measure the energy spectrum of cosmic rays from 100 TeV to 10 PeV, a dynamic range extension system (WCDA++) is designed to use a 1.5-inch PMT with a dynamic range of four orders of magnitude for each cell in WCDA-1. The dynamic range is extended by using these PMTs to measure the effective charge density in the core region of air shower events, which is an important parameter for identifying the composition of primary particles. The system has been running for more than one year. In this paper, the details of the design and performance of WCDA++ are presented.

Abstract

We report the discovery of an extended very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray source around the location of the middle-aged (207.8 kyr) pulsar PSR J0622+3749 with the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). The source is detected with a significance of 8.2σ for E25 TeV assuming a Gaussian template. The best-fit location is (right ascension, declination) =(95.47°±0.11°,37.92°±0.09°), and the extension is 0.40°±0.07°. The energy spectrum can be described by a power-law spectrum with an index of -2.92±0.17_{stat}±0.02_{sys}. No clear extended multiwavelength counterpart of the LHAASO source has been found from the radio to sub-TeV bands. The LHAASO observations are consistent with the scenario that VHE electrons escaped from the pulsar, diffused in the interstellar medium, and scattered the interstellar radiation field. If interpreted as the pulsar halo scenario, the diffusion coefficient, inferred for electrons with median energies of ∼160 TeV, is consistent with those obtained from the extended halos around Geminga and Monogem and much smaller than that derived from cosmic ray secondaries. The LHAASO discovery of this source thus likely enriches the class of so-called pulsar halos and confirms that high-energy particles generally diffuse very slowly in the disturbed medium around pulsars.

Abstract

We present a study of phase escape in surface Bi _2 Sr _2 CaCu _2 O _8+ _δ intrinsic Josephson junctions in the presence of microwave radiation. The measured switching current distributions display clear double-peak structures in the microwave field, which result from the single- and two-photon resonant escape processes accompanied by microwave-induced potential barrier suppression. We show that these results can be well explained by a quantum-mechanical model proposed by Fistul et al (2003 Phys. Rev. B 68 060504), from which the power and frequency dependences of the switching current distributions can be reproduced.

Abstract

We study the magneto-resistance oscillations of four reference samples, S1 to S4, with varying periods in rectangular arrays of antidots on superconducting Nb film. Conforming to literature, the oscillations of S1 reveal the existence of two types of matching effect with different constant magnetic field intervals induced by reconfiguration. On the contrary, we observe very sharp and narrow magneto-resistance oscillations in S4 with very small period of antidots, and a maximum of two oscillations in S2 and S3 with large period of antidots, without any reconfiguration. Therefore, we establish that when the period of antidots either approaches zero or becomes very large, the reconfiguration phenomenon vanishes and only one type of matching may be observed.

Abstract

OsAMT is a high-affinity ammonium transporter responsible for NH4+ uptake by rice plants. To investigate the expression patterns of OsAMT in different genotypes in relation to nitrogen accumulation, we measured the expression of OsAMT1.1, OsAMT1.2, and OsAMT1.3 using Real-Time PCR (RT-PCR) in GD (higher N accumulation) and NG (lower N accumulation) seedlings of the Oryza sativa L. cultivar treated with 0.1 mM NH4NO3 and 2 mM NH4NO3. We found that the expression level of OsAMT1.1 was significantly higher than those of OsAMT1.2 and OsAMT1.3 in the roots treated with 0.1 mM NH4NO3, suggesting that OsAMT1.1 contributed the most to N accumulation among the three genes. In GD root, OsAMT1.1 had significantly higher expression levels when it was up-regulated by 0.1 mM NH4NO3 than when down-regulated by 2 mM NH4NO3. OsAMT1.1 was mainly found in GD roots treated with 0.1 mM NH4NO3. We conclude that the OsAMT1.1 in GD roots, which was significantly up-regulated by low N and down-regulated by high N, was the dominating factor in determining the higher N acquisition in GD than in NG at 0.1 mM NH4NO3.

Abstract

Two new lanthanide-radical complexes [Ln(Hfac)3(NIT-4PhAllO)2](Ln(III) = Gd (I), Tb (II); Hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate; NIT-4PhAllO = 4′-allyloxyphenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) have been prepared and characterized in structurally as well as magnetically. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that two complexes are isostructural with mononuclear tri-spin structure, in which the metal ions are eight-coordinated in distorted dodecahedron geometry. The nitronyl nitroxide radicals act as monodentate ligands towards Ln(Hfac)3 unit through the oxygen atom of the nitronyl nitroxide group. Magnetic studies reveal that the Gd-coordinated nitroxide interaction is ferromagnetic.

Abstract

Summary Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease. Immunomodulation of atherosclerosis emerges as a promising approach to prevention and treatment of this widely prevalent disease. The function of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) to promote reverse cholesterol transport may explain the ability of its protection against atherosclerosis. Findings that HDL and apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) inhibited the ability of antigen presenting cells (APCs) to stimulate T cells might be attributed to lipid raft, a cholesterol-rich microdomain exhibiting functional properties depending largely upon its lipid composition. Thus, modulating cholesterol in lipid raft may provide a promising anti-atherogenic strategy.

Abstract

Low fertilizer nitrogen efficiency and high fertilizer input in agriculture cause serious environmental pollution and waste of fertilizers. In order to select nitrogen-efficient cultivars, field experiments were conducted with 199 rice (Oryza sativa L., japonica) cultivars/lines at three nitrogen levels (0, 126 and 180 kg N/ha) in order to screen the differences of genotypes in nitrogen efficiency. Results showed that genotype is the dominating factor in determining grain yield rather than environmental factors. In general, grain yield relies on: 1) nitrogen uptake and biomass; 2) grain nitrogen use efficiency and physiological nitrogen use efficiency; and 3) harvest index and nitrogen harvest index. The N-efficient cultivars are LA19, XS48, MJ199, YJ38, HD and GD4, and N-inefficient cultivars are DN413, HJ19, FNXHM, NY1819 and ELIO. Abstract

We aimed to evaluate the effect of atorvastatin on apolipoprotein AV (ApoAV) in HepG2 cells of insulin resistance (IR), and further explore its mechanism.Firstly, a model of IR in HepG2 cells was established by insulin, and then treated with various concentrations of atorvastatin (0, 10, 100 and 500 nM) for 12 h and 24 h, respectively. Detection of glucose concentration was performed by Glucose Oxidase kit. Subsequently, Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits were used to measure the concentrations of triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL). The mRNA levels of ApoAV and ApoAV-related genes, including glucose transporter 1 (Glut1), Glut2, peroxisome proliferator activated receptor α (PPARα), and liver X receptor α (LXRα) were detected by qRT-PCR.We successfully established IR model in HepG2 cells by 10-6 nM insulin. Subsequently, we found that the glucose extraction rate and mRNA level of ApoAV significantly reduced in HepG2 cells of IR (p0.05); however, atorvastatin increased the glucose extraction rate and ApoAV mRNA level. Furthermore, atorvastatin inhibited the concentration of TG in HepG2 cells of IR (p0.05); however, atorvastatin had no effect on HDL, LDL and VLDL. Also, atorvastatin could increase the mRNA levels of Glut2 but not Glut1, PPARα, and LXRα.Our study indicated that atorvastatin might inhibit IR induced by insulin through the TG-lowering role of ApoAV. Furthermore, Glut2 might be involved in the effect of atorvastatin on ApoAV in HepG2 cells of IR.

Abstract

By optimizing the Mg2+ concentration, Taq enzyme dosage, SYBR Green I (SGI) concentration, and plate reading temperature in PCR system, we established the method for detecting the expression levels of nitrogen assimilation-related genes in rice by using RT-PCR technique. Based on this qualified method, we investigated the variations of OsAMT1.1 (one of nitrogen uptake genes) and OsGlt1 (one of nitrogen metabolism genes) expression levels in rice seedlings under conditions of varying nitrogen supply. The results show that by optimizing the parameters in the PCR system to fit the characters of target genes best, we can successfully quantify the low-abundant nitrogen transport and metabolism genes in rice quickly and exactly using fluorescence RT-PCR technique.

Abstract

Olfactory neuroblastoma (ON, esthesioneuroblastoma) is a high-grade malignant tumour of neuronal origin. Little is known about the neurobiological behaviour of this tumour. Ten cases of ON and five cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma were examined for expression of trkA and p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) using immunohistochemistry and double labelling fluorescence. We found that all ON tissues from 10 cases expressed both trkA and p75NTR at different levels. Double staining revealed that almost all trkA-immunoreactive ON cells also contained p75NTR immunoreactivity. By contrast, no trkA or p75NTR immunoreactivity was detected in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells from five patients. These results suggest that nerve growth factor may play a role in the generation of ON and staining of trkA and p75NTR may assist in the diagnosis of ON.

24. Environmental Behavior of PAHs in Dianchi Lake Distributions, Sources and Risk Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Surface Sediments from Dianchi Lake,China.

Abstract

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the priority controlling list of US EPA were systematically evaluated in surface sediments in Dianchi Lake and its estuaries. Total PAH concentrations (ΣPAHs) varied from 210 to 11,070 ng/g dry weight (d.w.) in Dianchi Lake, and from 230 to 12,271 ng/g d.w. in the estuaries. ΣPAHs in sediments from Caohai section were higher than those from Waihai section. The occurrences of PAHs in the Lake were closely related to the distributions of rivers, indicating that the river runoff was an important pathway of PAHs into the Lake. Compared with the US Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs), ΣPAHs in most area were below the effect range low (ERL), which implied that the adverse biological effects would occur rarely. The toxic equivalent concentrations of potentially carcinogenic PAHs (TEQcarc) varied from 19 to 967 ng TEQ/g d.w., and the higher values were found in northern Caohai area. The proportions of the toxic equivalent quantity (TEQcarc) to the total TEQs in sediments were all above 96%, suggesting that the carcinogenicity of PAHs could be occurred. Significantly positive correlations between total organic carbon (TOC) and less molecular weight PAHs (2, 3-ring) (LPAHs) were observed in the Lake. Diagnostic ratios showed that the primary source of PAHs in Dianchi Lake and most estuaries is biomass combustion, but is petroleum combustion or petrogenic origin in several other estuaries. Abstract

Tunneling spectra of near optimally doped, submicron Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+ δ intrinsic Josephson junctions are presented, and examined in the region where the superconducting gap evolves into pseudogap. The spectra are analyzed using a self-energy model, proposed by Norman et al., in which both quasiparticle scattering rate Γ and pair decay rate ΓΔ are considered. The density of states derived from the model has the familiar Dynes’ form with a simple replacement of Γ by γ+ = (Γ+ΓΔ)/2. The γ+ parameter obtained from fitting the experimental spectra shows a roughly linear temperature dependence, which puts a strong constraint on the relation between Γ and ΓΔ. We discuss and compare the Fermi arc behavior in the pseudogap phase from the tunneling and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments. Our results indicate an excellent agreement between the two experiments, which is in favor of the precursor pairing view of the pseudogap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Two-junction SQUIDs with negative mutual inductance between their two arms, called nSQUIDs, have been proposed for significantly improving quantum information transfer but their quantum nature has not been experimentally demonstrated. We have designed, fabricated, and characterized superconducting nSQUID qubits. Our results provide clear evidence of the quantum coherence of the device, whose properties are well described by theoretical calculations using parameters determined from spectroscopic measurement. In addition to their future application for fast quantum information transfer, the nSQUID qubits exhibit rich characteristics in their tunable two-dimensional (2D) potentials, energy levels, wave function symmetries, and dipole matrix elements, which are essential to the study of a wide variety of macroscopic quantum phenomena such as tunneling in 2D potential landscapes.
