Abstract

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has challenged the ideals of peace that I and many other left-wing critical intellectuals hold dear. By the end of the 18th century, Immanuel Kant argued that the realist law of peoples and the idea of just war should be superseded by the idea of perpetual peace, and, fortunately, the principled opposition to war was institutionalized in the United Nations in the 20th century. However, when the aggressor has already taken possession of huge swathes of territory, calls for peace may be suspected of ideological bias. The right to defend yourself is almost universally recognized, but a military counter-offensive to reconquer lost territory is not merely defense but itself aggression, and thus an act of war. Many of us, however, want to support such efforts in Ukraine, and what is worrying is that this places us on a slippery slope, reopening the possibility of justifying war. As I will argue, this is nevertheless the path we must take, thus accepting the possible justification of war and the possible justification of specific activities and armaments but not others. We should take more seriously the justice of war, with all the specific normative challenges that this implies.

Abstract

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic crisis is ongoing, and the elderly are still affected by the virus, sometimes with fatal consequences. The political leaders are, inter alia, focussed on protecting citizens, including this vulnerable group. This article aims to describe the response of the Norwegian political leadership, with a focus on the public health measures enacted to protect the elderly during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic crisis in the years 2020 and 2021. This study has a descriptive qualitative research design using thematic-content analysis as a methodology to evaluate data collected from official documents, national statistics and public health documents from Norway. Statistics show that the elderly mortality rate per 100,000 person-weeks during the first wave of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic was 2.69 in Norway; during the second wave of the pandemic, it was 1.43. The public health measures the Norwegian political leadership instigated were more effective in containing the crisis when compared to other European countries, and this paper investigates the reasons. The results of our study provide public health policy decision-makers with insights into analytical material showing the usefulness of different measures enacted by the Norwegian government. The Norwegian government’s responses to the crisis, such as the public health measures, restrictions, social consequences for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, as well as cross-government and cross-community cooperation, will need further in-depth analysis.

3. Aliénation, entfremdung - and alienation. Hegel’s solidary displacement of Diderot

Abstract

Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit put alienation high on the philosophical agenda, as was readily recognized by Marx. Relatively well-known is also that Hegel’s concept of alienation was inspired by Goethe’s translation of Diderot’s dialogue Rameau’s Nephew, but the details and the conceptual implications of these details typically escape scholarly attention. Recognizing the basic idea of alienation as not-belonging to or being deprived of something, I emphasize that alienation implies a movement towards the limits of the human being, in which the mental suffering this involves is conditioned by social pathologies. To substantiate this claim, I show how Diderot’s satire implies uncompromising materialist social criticism, but that it does not employ the term ‘aliénation’ but instead reserves it for a kind of frenzy that borders on insanity. My claim is then that, in Goethe’s translation of Diderot’s dialogue, and in his translation of ‘aliénation’ to ‘Entfremdung’, Hegel found a general key for the conceptual critique of the spirit of Modernity. I therefore argue that, in the Phenomenology, Hegel employed alienation in more than one sense, raising madness to the level of a characteristic of Modernity, stressing the detrimental implications for consciousness under such living conditions, emphasizing how alienation works as negation, and, finally, pointing nevertheless to the possibility of embracing social and political reality.

Abstract

In my response, I initially defend my preference for classical Critical Theory, emphasizing its continued relevance in capitalist modernity, stressing that the epistemological approach does not imply dogmatism with regards to scientific theory or Historical Materialism, just as it does not imply closure with regards to political democracy. When it comes to the dialectics of the classics, I also defend an epistemological approach, arguing that the dialectics aiming for truth implies critique and negativity. However, confronted with the duality of transcendental ideas and historical relativity, I express my confidence in human intuition. Following Hegel, determinate negation must sublate the intuitively conceived universality to a new conception that contains the result of the negation. Finally, I do not see how the conceptual aporias of general economy can be solved by the current political degrowth project. Still, politics is what we need more of, namely social democracy.

Abstract

Offshore slender marine structures experience complex and combined load conditions from waves, current and vessel motions that may result in both wave frequency and vortex shedding response patterns. Field measurements often consist of records of environmental conditions and riser responses, typically with 30-minute intervals. These data can be represented in a high-dimensional parameter space. However, it is difficult to visualize and understand the structural responses, as they are affected by many of these parameters. It becomes easier to identify trends and key parameters if the measurements with the same characteristics can be grouped together. Cluster analysis is an unsupervised learning method, which groups the data based on their relative distance, density of the data space, intervals, or statistical distributions. In the present study, a Gaussian mixture model guided by domain knowledge has been applied to analyze field measurements. Using the 242 measurement events of the Helland-Hansen riser, it is demonstrated that riser responses can be grouped into 12 clusters by the identification of key environmental parameters. This results in an improved understanding of complex structure responses. Abstract

Insect production for food and feed presents a promising supplement to ensure food safety and address the adverse impacts of agriculture on climate and environment in the future. However, optimisation is required for insect production to realise its full potential. This can be by targeted improvement of traits of interest through selective breeding, an approach which has so far been underexplored and underutilised in insect farming. Here we present a comprehensive review of the selective breeding framework in the context of insect production. We systematically evaluate adjustments of selective breeding techniques to the realm of insects and highlight the essential components integral to the breeding process. The discussion covers every step of a conventional breeding scheme, such as formulation of breeding objectives, phenotyping, estimation of genetic parameters and breeding values, selection of appropriate breeding strategies, and mitigation of issues associated with genetic diversity depletion and inbreeding. This review combines knowledge from diverse disciplines, bridging the gap between animal breeding, quantitative genetics, evolutionary biology, and entomology, offering an integrated view of the insect breeding research area and uniting knowledge which has previously remained scattered across diverse fields of expertise.

Abstract

Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) may interact with a virtual pion that is exchanged between nucleons. This interaction channel is important to consider in models where the spin-independent isoscalar channel is suppressed. Using data from the first science run of the LUX-ZEPLIN dark matter experiment, containing 60 live days of data in a 5.5~tonne fiducial mass of liquid xenon, we report the results on a search for WIMP-pion interactions. We observe no significant excess and set an upper limit of $1.5\times10^{-46}$~cm$^2$ at a 90\% confidence level for a WIMP mass of 33~GeV/c$^2$ for this interaction.

Abstract

Electric vehicle (EV) charging loads have an impact on the power grid, but also represent a potential for energy flexibility. There is a need for EV data to evaluate effects on the power grid and optimal EV charging strategies. A stochastic bottom-up model is developed for residential EV charging, taking outdoor temperatures into account. The model input is based on real-world data from residential charging in Norway. The load profile generator provides hourly load profiles for any number and combination of small and large EVs, assuming immediate charging after plug-in. It is found that the model generates realistic load profiles for residential EV charging, reflecting today’s charging patterns. Data generated can be used for load and flexibility simulations for residential EV charging.

44. Balancing the Norwegian regulated power market anno 2016 to 2022

Abstract

The balancing market for power is designed to account for the difference between predicted supply/demand of electricity and the realised supply/demand. However, increased electrification of society changes the consumption patterns, and increased production from renewable sources leads to larger un-predicted fluctuations in production, both effects potentially leading to increased balancing. We analyse public market data for the balancing market (manual Frequency Restoration Reserve) for Norway from 2016 to 2022 to investigate and document these effects. The data is newer than for similar analyses and the eight years of data is more than double the time span previously covered. The main findings are: a) The balancing volumes are dominated by hours of zero regulation but for non-zero hours, the balancing volumes are increasing during the eight-year period. b) The balancing prices are primarily correlated with day-ahead prices and secondary with balancing volumes. The latter correlation is found to be increasingly non-linear with time. c) The balancing volumes and the price difference between balancing price and day-ahead price are strongly correlated with the previous hour. d) The increasing share of wind power has not impacted the frequency of balancing, which has remained stable during the 8 years studied. However, the volumes and share of balancing power compared to overall production have increased, suggesting that the hours which are inherently difficult to predict remain the same. e) Market data alone cannot predict balancing volumes. If attempting, the auto-correlation becomes the main source of information.
