Violence as a social phenomenon does not know the age of a victim. It is happening at all stages of life and among members of all age groups. Ageing of the population and an increasing emphasis on its problems, among other things, raises the issue of violence against the elderly which is happening in their homes. Incorrect assumptions that violence occurs in institutions rather than in the family contributes to ignoring the problem. A combination of individual, relational, community, and societal factors contribute to the risk of becoming a victim and a perpetrator of elder abuse. Based on the so far research and knowledge, the paper aims to point out to the risk factor for elder abuse in order to sensitize and foster public and scientific community on activism, discovering and solving problems related to elder abuse in the family setting.

Older people represent a specific group with very different needs, depending on their physical and mental health status. The share of older people in the overall population is growing, which is called demographic ageing. That process is a result of the decline in birth rate and increase of life expectancy due to the advancement of medicine and improved quality of life in general. At the same time the number of those who need long-term care or support is also increasing, because of their inability to live independently. Informal caregivers, who in most cases are close family members, play a key role in this process. Therefore, the aim of this research was to identify sociodemographic features of the informal caregivers of older people and the features of the care they provide. The survey was carried out on a convenient sample of 342 informal caregivers from the Zagreb city area. The results showed that caregivers are most often middle-aged married and employed women. It has also been found that they generally care for their parents, who lived to a ripe old age, with the presence of multimorbidity. Even one third of caregivers have provided care for 24 hours a day, during an average period of five years or more. Activities in which they most often provide help are care for the sick and household chores. They expressed a greater need for help and care in homes, patronage services, gerontology centres and infirmaries. The results showed that family caregivers bear a heavy burden, which points to the need to consider better legal solutions related to social policy towards old people as well as their caregivers. Financial abuse is the most common form of elder abuse. Therefore, it is a major social problem for vulnerable older people. It is difficult to determine the prevalence of financial abuse because of the diversity of its definitions and methods used to collect the data in a particular study. A large number of unreported cases occurs as an additional problem because of shame of victims, fear of judgment or lack of information about available possibilities of protection. Women are more frequently victims of financial abuse than men. Elderly people are at greater risk of abuse if they have cognitive impairments or if they are socially isolated with poor mental and physical health. The most common perpetrators of financial abuse are family members of abused elderly people, especially their adult children. Except them, perpetrators may be unknown persons and different institutions. They are specifically looking for the victim. Then the perpetrators take complete control and power over the victim and his/her material means by establishing an undue influence. The financial abuse of the elderly is rarely publicly discussed and victims are very poorly protected by law. A multidisciplinary approach of society and social institutions responsible for the protection of health, rights and interests of the elderly is necessary, in order to prevent the occurrence of financial abuse of the elderly and to provide victims with appropriate assistance and protection. In addition, it is necessary to raise awareness of the moral duty of all citizens to report violence, in order to achieve timely and effective protection of persons who are exposed to such violence. This article presents the research carried out on a sample of 303 elderly men and women. In the last year they reported experiencing violence in the family as follows: psychological abuse (24.1%), financial exploitation (6.4%), physical abuse (4.4%), and sexual abuse (2.1%). The abusers were most often husbands (30.15%), sons (16.64%), daughters (14.01%), and wives (9.21%). In the partner relationship, 44% of the women and 35% of the men had experienced at least some form of violence. The results showed that elderly men and women who were victims of family abuse had poorer psychological health than those without such experiences. Starting from the basic demographic trends, with the share of persons older than 65 years of age of 15.7%, Croatia matches the average of the EU member states. Since ageing of the population represents one of the greatest challenges that the world is faced with, the position of the elderly in society, quality of life in the older age and trends in the policy of care for the elderly are the matter of interest of political, professional and scientific-research circles of the largest number of the developed countries in the world. The analysis of the trends in the care for the elderly in EU member states, as well as in the Republic of Croatia, indicates the promotion of healthy and active ageing, which is regarded as the key for ensuring an equal role of the persons of the third age in society. A common strategy for most policies of care for the elderly in European countries includes strengthening of the community care, in the sense of developing non-institutional forms of care. Namely, unlike the trends in European countries, where the policy of care for the elderly is increasingly focused on provision of help in their homes, in an attempt to keep elderly persons in their own homes, the trends in the care for the elderly in the Republic of Croatia only partly follow the ones on the level of the EU due to insufficient development of local forms of management of systems of the care for the elderly, inadequate network of the institutional forms of care, underdeveloped and insufficiently clear systems of financing and so on. Family violence against elderly persons is one of the complex challenges that modern society is faced with. There has been no systematic research of the family violence against elderly persons in Croatia so far. The aims of this research were: (1) to check the constructive validity of the Survey of the exposure of elderly persons to violence, which survey was designed to research the extent and forms of manifestation of the violence against the elderly in Croatia, and (2) to collect the first data on the violence against the elderly in Croatia. The research was conducted in the area of the City of Zagreb on an appropriate sample of 303 persons (23.4% of men and 76.6% of women) aged between 65 and 97. It has been shown that 61.1% of the respondents have experienced at least one form of family violence during the last year. On average, they mostly experienced psychical violence (24.1%), then material abuse (6.4%), physical abuse (4.4%) and sexual abuse (2.1%). The most frequent perpetrators include husbands (30.15%), sons (16.4%) and daughters (14.01%). The results have been discussed with the view of the future research studies of the violence against the elderly on representative samples in Croatia and the development of social policy of fighting violence against elderly citizens. The aim of this study was to determine the perception of satisfaction with social support for caregivers of family members of patients with Alzheimer's disease and the contribution of predictors in explaining satisfaction with informal and formal support. The study included 56 informal caregivers of family members of patients with Alzheimer's disease from the Republic of Croatia, 34% male and 66% female. The age range of the participants ranged from 26 to 88 years (M=59.71). Results of regression analyses showed that caregivers who use active coping strategies and those who rarely resorted to passive avoidant assess situations are satisfied with social support they receive from informal providers of support (family, friends, colleagues, neighbours). With regard to the satisfaction of caregivers of people with Alzheimer's with formal social support, the result shows that male participants who express lower level of combustion and intensive use of active coping strategies are more satisfied with the social support they receive from formal support providers. Finally, we need systematic research on caregivers, their daily activities in care, types of support they need, financial difficulties and the method of harmonizing nursing roles with other obligations. Furthermore, it is important to sensitize professionals and place a strong emphasis on professional responsibility of every health and social worker in the process of ensuring timely and complete information that will facilitate the caregiver ability to coordinate the daily demands of care for the affected person.
