Background/Objectives: ZNF711(Zinc finger protein 711) encodes a zinc finger protein of currently undefined function, located on the X chromosome. Current knowledge includes a limited number of case reports where this gene has been exclusively associated with X-linked intellectual disability (XLID). As far as we are aware, we report the first cases of epilepsy associated with this particular variant. Our aim is to further delineate the phenotypic spectrum of ZNF711 gene pathogenic variants, adding clinical features to this rare condition, following a genotype-first approach. Case presentation: We describe the familiar case of two male siblings presenting with moderate intellectual disability (ID), language delay, and motor stereotypies. Additionally, they experienced generalized tonic–clonic seizures (GTCSs) and myoclonic seizures with interictal electroencephalographic abnormalities. Both children underwent various genetic testing and counselling, including an extended next-generation sequencing (NGS) panel, revealing a hemizygous c.657C > G pathogenic variant in the ZNF711 gene from maternal inheritance. Conclusions: This case expands the clinical range of ZNF711 variants by highlighting epilepsy as a potential comorbidity and suggesting other possible causal candidates for generalized epilepsy. Sexuality is a fundamental part of human existence and it encompasses thoughts, desires, behaviors, relationships, as well as neuropsychological and physiological components. However, sexuality in older adults is under-researched from the neuropsychological and psychophysiological perspectives and is often neglected by healthcare providers in the clinical practice. This article aims to explore the state of the art on the neuropsychology and psychophysiology of older adults' sexuality, proposing future research directions and emphasizing its significance. By summarizing current knowledge on the sexuality of younger individuals, it was possible to lay the groundwork for formulating research questions about older adults' sexuality. The implications proposed in this article will potentially impact both the scientific and also the clinical field. In fact, gaining insights on the neuropsychological and psychophysiological aspects of sexuality in healthy older adults can also shed light into those with neurocognitive disorders. Socio‐demographic changes in Europe have heightened interest in the topic of integration. However, a clear definition of the construct remains elusive, particularly in relation to the second generation and "long‐established" young people of foreign origin. On the one hand, "integration" takes on different meanings depending on the researcher's approach; on the other, few studies directly address the views of young people with a migrant background. Using a qualitative approach, the study analyses the subjective meaning and connotations attributed to the term "integration," as well as the personal perception of integration into Italian society among 26 young people of different ethnic origins living in Italy (mean age = 24.5 years, SD 4.1; F = 14). All participants belonged to the second generation or had immigrated to Italy before the age of 12. They answered a semi‐structured interview on cultural identity, characteristics of social networks, feelings of integration and experiences of personal and group discrimination. The results showed that the participants closely associated integration with the issues of respect, acceptance and lack of discrimination, but also with the subjective feeling of being part of society and belonging to it. Titanium nitride (TiN) has recently gained considerable interest because of its remarkable plasmonic properties and for its strong electron–phonon (e–ph) coupling, leading to extremely fast (<100 fs) electron‐lattice cooling. Here, the generation of coherent phonons in TiN films is reported, along with their real‐time detection by means of broadband transient reflection spectroscopy with sub‐15‐fs temporal resolution. The measurements show damped oscillations, superimposed to excited state electronic decay. A coherent vibrational mode is revealed, with ≈10 THz frequency ascribed to defect‐activated normal modes, consistent with spontaneous Raman scattering data, and a dephasing time of ≈250 fs. Two π‐phase flips are also observed located at photon energies corresponding to interband optical transitions (at 3.2 and 2.5 eV), ascribed to selective coupling of the vibrational mode to these transitions; the energy modulation induced by the vibrational coherence is evaluated. It is shown that the displacive excitation of coherent phonons model describes the coherent response in terms of temporal behavior and of spectral amplitude profile. Overall, a comprehensive and detailed analysis of coherent phonons in TiN films, so far undected, is provided and relevant information on TiN photo‐physical properties, potentially useful for its applications, is given. Nanofoam materials are gaining increasing interest in the scientific community, thanks to their unique properties such as ultralow density, complex nano‐ and microstructure, and high surface area. Nanofoams are attractive for multiple applications, ranging from advanced catalysis and energy storage to nuclear fusion and particle acceleration. The main issues hindering the widespread use of nanofoams are related to the choice of synthesis technique, highly dependent on the desired elemental composition and leading to a limited control over the main material properties. Herein, femtosecond pulsed laser deposition is proposed as a universal tool for the synthesis of nanofoams with tailored characteristics. Nanofoams made by elements with significantly different properties—namely, boron, silicon, copper, tungsten, and gold—can be produced by suitably tuning the deposition parameters. The effect of the background pressure is studied in detail, in relation to the morphological features and density of the resulting nanofoams and nanostructured films. This, together with the analysis of the specific features shown by nanofoams made of different elements, offers fresh insights into the aggregation process and its relation to the corresponding nanofoam properties down to the nanoscale, opening new perspectives toward the application of nanofoam‐based materials. Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological syndrome characterized by endometrial cell invasion of the extra‐uterine milieu, pelvic pain and infertility. Treatment relies on either symptomatic drugs or hormonal therapies, even though the mechanism involved in the onset of endometriosis is yet to be elucidated. The signaling of sphingolipid sphingosine 1‐phosphate (S1P) is profoundly dysregulated in endometriosis. Indeed, sphingosine kinase (SK)1, one of the two isoenzymes responsible for S1P biosynthesis, and S1P1, S1P3 and S1P5, three of its five specific receptors, are more highly expressed in endometriotic lesions compared to healthy endometrium. Recently, missense coding variants of the gene encoding the receptor 1 for neuropeptide S (NPS) have been robustly associated with endometriosis in humans. This study aimed to characterize the biological effect of NPS in endometriotic epithelial cells and the possible involvement of the S1P signaling axis in its action. NPS was found to potently induce cell invasion and actin cytoskeletal remodeling. Of note, the NPS‐induced invasive phenotype was dependent on SK1 and SK2 as well as on S1P1 and S1P3, given that the biological action of the neuropeptide was fully prevented when one of the two biosynthetic enzymes or one of the two selective receptors was inhibited or silenced. Furthermore, the RhoA/Rho kinase pathway, downstream to S1P receptor signaling, was found to be critically implicated in invasion and cytoskeletal remodeling elicited by NPS. These findings provide new information to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms implicated in endometriosis pathogenesis, establishing the rationale for non‐hormonal therapeutic targets for its treatment. During pregnancy and in the post-partum period, several diseases may arise or become exacerbated. Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory disease with an increasing incidence in Western countries. The incidence of acute pancreatitis during pregnancy is not different with respect to the general population, but this incidence increases in the first 2 years after delivery. Biliary sludge and stones are the most frequent aetiologies, followed by hypertriglyceridemia. Taking care of the mother and foetus through a potentially severe disease requires a team consisting of an obstetrician, a gastroenterologist, an anaesthesiologist, and a surgeon. It is necessary to monitor the health of the foetus/child and the mother during pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium. The management of this care depends on the systemic and local complications, the severity of the acute pancreatitis, and the trimester of pregnancy. Some diagnostic tools and many drugs are not safe for foetuses, while interventional endoscopy and surgery have limitations and can only be used after an accurate evaluation of benefit/risk ratios. Despite these limitations, maternal mortality due to acute pancreatitis is low during pregnancy, mainly thanks to multidisciplinary approaches for these patients. A careful diet to prevent obesity, alcohol abstinence, routine serum triglyceride control, and breastfeeding for at least three months may prevent acute pancreatitis during and after pregnancy. Most of the social psychology literature focuses on the difficulties that young people of migrant backgrounds (YMBs) living in Western countries have in negotiating multicultural identities and developing a sense of belonging to two cultures, emphasizing the negative consequences of feeling discriminated against. However, how YMBs who self‐identify as multicultural reconcile their feelings of integration with identity denial and discrimination has been less explored. The purpose of the present study was to examine, in a sample of YMBs living in Italy, how they reconcile their multicultural identities and perceptions of integration with feelings of rejection by segments of Italian society. Twenty‐five young adults (mean age: 24.5; SD = 4.1; Female (F) = 13) from different ethnic backgrounds participated in semistructured interviews. The results highlighted the protective role of bicultural identification in the identity of YMBs, expressed in the tendency to avoid recognizing oneself in the image of the 'migrant' and instead to promote that of a multicultural individual who is not different from other fellow citizens. This goal was achieved at the interpersonal and intrapersonal levels by adopting cognitive strategies of stigma avoidance such as personal/group discrimination discrepancy and doublethink. We study the optical properties of Molybdenum Disulphide nanosheets deposited by chemical vapor deposition onto a nanopatterned substrate endowed with a uniaxial corrugation. The uniaxial nanocorrugation leads to a polarization dependence in steady state and an anisotropic relaxation around the C resonance. Finite element numerical simulations allow to better disclose the scenario. Our findings point towards new possibilities for the manipulation of the optical properties of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides via substrate nanopatterning.

On-line college courses present a mandate for student identity verification for accreditation and funding sources. Student authentication requires course modification to detect fraud and misrepresentation of authorship in assignment submissions. The reality is that some college students cheat in face-to-face classrooms; however, the potential for on-line fraud exceeds that of traditional classroom protocols. Because of reduced personal contact, on-line teaching requires additional ways to prevent cheating and to authenticate authorship of course submissions. Key issues include providing both legal and ethical accountability to college's funding sources for accreditation. Detection methods include qualitative and quantitative analysis utilizing course content analysis, psychometrics, and biometrics (which includes fingerprint, voice recognition software, camera photo ID matched to student ID). Case studies include qualitative analysis focused on cultural causes related to ethical lapses. This article describes these topics and methods and how their use helps detect and reduce cheating. Verification methods should identify student authorship and submission misrepresentation and reduce errors in student evaluations, grading, course outcomes analysis, and the granting of college credit for work completed. Ultrafast plasmonics is driving growing interest for the search of novel plasmonic materials, overcoming the main limitations of noble metals. In this framework, titanium nitride (TiN) is brought in the spotlight for its refractory properties combined with an extremely fast electron‐lattice cooling time (<100 fs) compared to gold (≈ 1 ps). Despite the results reported in literature, a clear‐cut explanation of the origin of the ultrafast and giant optical response of TiN‐based materials upon excitation with femtosecond laser pulses is still missing. To address this issue, an original model is introduced, capable of unfolding the modulation of TiN optical properties on a broad bandwidth, starting from the variations of electronic and lattice temperatures following ultrafast photoexcitation. The numerical analysis is validated on ultrafast pump–probe spectroscopy experiments on a simple structure, a TiN film on glass. This approach enables a complete disentanglement of the interband and intraband contributions to the permittivity modulation. Moreover, it is also shown that, varying the synthesis conditions of the TiN film, not only the static, but also the dynamical optical response can be efficiently tuned. These findings pave the way for a breakthrough in the field: the design of TiN‐based ultrafast nanodevices for all‐optical modulation of light. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present article proposes a new reading of the exegetical dimension of St. Thomas through an analysis of the texts and contexts of the works in which St. Thomas makes explicit reference to the littera and to the sensus of the Scriptures. This survey was able to be formalized according to the following aspects: the diverse versions of the Bible St. Thomas employs, the evolution of his hermeneutic theory, the interpretative principles and functional criteria underlying his exegetical practice, the acquisitions that reveal the deeply unitary nature of his vision and the relationship between faith and exegesis. The interest in compact, cost-effective, and versatile accelerators is increasing for many applications of great societal relevance, ranging from nuclear medicine to agriculture, pollution control, and cultural heritage conservation. For instance, Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) is a non-destructive material characterization technique applied to environmental analysis that requires MeV-energy ions. In this context, superintense laser-driven ion sources represent a promising alternative to conventional accelerators. In particular, the optimization of the laser-target coupling by acting on target properties results in an enhancement of ion current and energy with reduced requirements on the laser system. Among the advanced target concepts that have been explored, one appealing option is given by double-layer targets (DLTs), where a very low-density layer, which acts as an enhanced laser absorber, is grown to a thin solid foil. Here we present some of the most recent results concerning the production with deposition techniques of advanced DLTs for laser-driven particle acceleration. We assess the potential of these targets for laser-driven ion acceleration with particle-in-cell simulations, as well as their application to PIXE analysis of aerosol samples with Monte Carlo simulations. Our investigation reports that MeV protons, accelerated with a ∼20 TW compact laser and optimized DLTs, can allow performing PIXE with comparable performances to conventional sources. Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are large-area sunlight collectors for efficient solar-to-electricity conversion. The key point for highly efficient LSCs is the choice of fluorophores, which need to have broad absorption, high quantum yield and large Stokes shift. Among various fluorophores, carbon quantum dots (C-dots) hold great promise as eco-friendly alternatives to heavy-metal-containing quantum dots (QDs) due to their adjustable absorption and emission spectra, non-toxicity, low cost and eco-friendly synthetic methods. However, due to the limited absorption band and relatively low quantum yield in the red region, it is a challenge to obtain efficient LSCs based on C-dots. Here, we demonstrated highly efficient LSCs based on red-emissive C-dots. The as-synthesized C-dots have a cubic structure, broad absorption covering 300–600 nm, and red emission (peak located at 595 nm), with a high quantum yield of ∼65% and a large Stokes shift of 0.45 eV. Transient absorption experiments of the C-dots revealed the ultrafast formation of the broad emissive state (1 ps). Based on the excellent optical properties of the C-dots, the as-prepared large-area LSC (10 × 10 × 0.52 cm3) exhibited an optimized external optical efficiency of 4.81% and a power conversion efficiency of 2.41% under natural sun irradiation (70 mW cm−2). Furthermore, a tandem LSC using green-emissive C-dots (top layer) and red-emissive C-dots (bottom layer) as fluorophores exhibited an external optical efficiency as high as 6.78%. These findings demonstrate the possibility of using eco-friendly carbon-based nanomaterials for highly efficient large-area LSCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The optoelectronic features of 3-hydroxyflavone (3HF) self-assembled on the surface of an n-type semiconducting metal oxide (TiO2) and an insulator (Al2O3) are herein investigated. 3HF molecules use the coordinatively unsaturated metal ions present on the oxide surface to form metal complexes, which exhibit different behaviors upon light irradiation, depending on the nature of the metal ion. Specifically, we show that the photoluminescence of the surface species can be modulated according to the chemical properties of the complex (i.e. the binding metal ion), resulting in solid-state emitters in a high quantum yield (about 15%). Furthermore, photoinduced charge injection can be promoted or inhibited, providing a multifunctional hybrid system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Risk-reducing surgery (RRS) is recommended in BRCA-mutated carriers because of their increased risk of developing ovarian cancer, while its role is still discussed for women harboring mutations in non-BRCA homologous repair genes. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the occurrence of pathological findings in a high-risk population undergoing RRS in San Matteo Hospital, Pavia between 2012 and 2022, and correlate their genetic and clinical outcomes, comparing them with a control group. The final cohort of 190 patients included 85 BRCA1, 63 BRCA2, 11 CHEK2, 7 PALB2, 4 ATM, 1 ERCC5, 1 RAD51C, 1 CDH1, 1 MEN1, 1 MLH1 gene mutation carriers and 15 patients with no known mutation but with strong familial risk. Occult invasive serous carcinoma (HGSC) and serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC) were diagnosed in 12 (6.3%) women, all of them BRCA carriers. No neoplastic lesion was diagnosed in the non-BRCA group, in women with familial risk, or in the control group. Oral contraceptive use and age ≤45 at surgery were both found to be favorable factors. While p53 signature and serous tubal intraepithelial lesion (STIL) were also seen in the control group and in non-BRCA carriers, STIC and HGSC were only found in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers. Endometriosis is a benign uterine disorder characterized by menstrual pain and infertility, deeply affecting women's health. It is a chronic disease and requires a long term management. Hormonal drugs are currently the most used for the medical treatment and are based on the endocrine pathogenetic aspects. Estrogen-dependency and progesterone-resistance are the key events which cause the ectopic implantation of endometrial cells, decreasing apoptosis and increasing oxidative stress, inflammation and neuroangiogenesis. Endometriotic cells express AMH, TGF-related growth factors (inhibin, activin, follistatin) CRH and stress related peptides. Endocrine and inflammatory changes explain pain and infertility, and the systemic comorbidities described in these patients, such as autoimmune (thyroiditis, arthritis, allergies), inflammatory (gastrointestinal/urinary diseases) and mental health disorders. The hormonal treatment of endometriosis aims to block of menstruation through an inhibition of hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis or by causing a pseudodecidualization with consequent amenorrhea, impairing the progression of endometriotic implants. GnRH agonists and antagonists are effective on endometriosis by acting on pituitary-ovarian function. Progestins are mostly used for long term treatments (dienogest, NETA, MPA) and act on multiple sites of action. Combined oral contraceptives are also used for reducing endometriosis symptoms by inhibiting ovarian function. Clinical trials are currently going on selective progesterone receptor modulators, selective estrogen receptor modulators and aromatase inhibitors. Nowadays, all these hormonal drugs are considered the first-line treatment for women with endometriosis to improve their symptoms, to postpone surgery or to prevent post-surgical disease recurrence.
