Abstract Butorphanol is widely used as an anesthetic drug, whether butorphanol could reduce organ injury and protecting lung tissue is unknown. This study explored the effects of butorphanol on ALI and investigated its underlying mechanisms. We established a “two-hit” rat model and “two-hit” cell model to prove our hypothesis. Rats were divided into four groups [control, “two-hit” (OA + LPS), “two-hit” + butorphanol (4 mg/kg and 8 mg/kg) (OA + LPS + B1 and OA + LPS + B2)]. RPMVE cells were divided into four groups [control, “two-hit” (OA + LPS), “two-hit” + butorphanol (4 μM and 8 μM) (OA + LPS + 4 μM and OA + LPS + 8 μM)]. Inflammatory injury was assessed by the histopathology and W/D ratio, inflammatory cytokines, and arterial blood gas analysis. Apoptosis was assessed by Western blotting and flow cytometry. The effect of NF-κB p65 was detected by ELISA. Butorphanol could relieve the “two-hit” induced lung injury, the expression of TNF, IL-1β, IL-6, and improve lung ventilation. In addition, butorphanol decreased Bax and cleaved caspase-3, increased an antiapoptotic protein (Bcl-2), and inhibited the “two-hit” cell apoptosis ratio. Moreover, butorphanol suppressed NF-κB p65 activity in rat lung injury. Our research showed that butorphanol may attenuate “two-hit”-induced lung injury by regulating the activity of NF-κB p65, which may supply more evidence for ALI treatment.

Objectives: MDS and AML characterized by TP53 variations have a poor prognosis in general. However, specifically, differences in prognosis have also been observed in patients with different TP53 variants and VAFs.Methods: Here, we retrospectively analyzed datasets of patients with MDS, MPN, and AML who underwent targeted DNA sequencing from February 2018 to December 2023, and patients with reportable TP53 variations were screened. Demographic data and clinical data were collected, and the relationship between TP53 alterations and patient prognosis (AML/MDS) was analyzed using the cBioPortal and Kaplan–Meier Plotter databases. The relationship between the VAFs of TP53 variations and prognoses was analyzed using data from the present study.Results: Sixty-two variants of TP53 were identified in 58 patients. We mainly identified single mutations (79.31%, 46/58), followed by double (17.24%, 10/58) and triple (3.45%, 2/58) mutations. The variations were mainly enriched in exon4–exon8 of TP53. Missense (72.58%, 45/62) mutations were the main type of variations, followed by splice-site (9.68%, 6/62), nonsense (9.68%, 6/62), frameshift (6.45%, 4/62), and indel (1.61%, 1/62) mutations. In this study, p.Arg175His and p.Arg273His were high-frequency TP53 mutations, and DNMT3A and TET2 were commonly co-mutated genes in the three types of myeloid neoplasms; However, we reported some new TP53 variants in MPN that have not been found in the public database. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide and accounts for more than 90% of primary liver cancer. The advent of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-related therapies combined with angiogenesis inhibition has revolutionized the treatment of HCC in late-stage and unresectable HCC, as ICIs alone were disappointing in treating HCC. In addition to the altered immune microenvironment, abnormal lipid metabolism in the liver has been extensively characterized in various types of HCC. Stains are known for their cholesterol-lowering properties and their long history of treating hypercholesterolemia and reducing cardiovascular disease risk. Apart from ICI and other conventional therapies, statins are frequently used by advanced HCC patients with dyslipidemia, which is often marked by the abnormal accumulation of cholesterol and fatty acids in the liver. Supported by a body of preclinical and clinical studies, statins may unexpectedly enhance the efficacy of ICI therapy in HCC patients through the regulation of inflammatory responses and the immune microenvironment. This review discusses the abnormal changes in lipid metabolism in HCC, summarizes the clinical evidence and benefits of stain use in HCC, and prospects the possible mechanistic actions of statins in transforming the immune microenvironment in HCC when combined with immunotherapies. Consequently, the use of statin therapy may emerge as a novel and valuable adjuvant for immunotherapies in HCC.

Flexible conductive fibers have attracted significant attention in the wearable electronics field because of light weight, small size, and easy shape morphing. To date, there are few reports on multifunctional flexible conductive fibers. Finding a facile and effective solution for large-scale production of flexible conductive fibers is still a challenge. In this work, a flexible core-sheath fiber with excellent electrical conductivity (24.71 Ω·m) and visible light sensing is fabricated, which contains a merocyanine diol (MC(OH)2)/CrCl3·6H2O/ethanol aqueous solution core layer and a silicon rubber outer layer. The synthesized MC(OH)2 is an intelligent molecular switch with a visible light response that can reversibly convert from open-form MC(OH)2 to closed-form spiropyran diol (SP(OH)2) after short visible light irradiation. In the reverse process, the transition from SP(OH)2 to MC(OH)2 can occur gradually in the dark. This can be used to sense visible light in addition to electrical conductivity. The reversible change in the electrical resistance of the MC(OH)2/CrCl3·6H2O/ethanol aqueous solution reaches 15.59%. This fiber shows excellent electrical conductivity, good flexibility, a sensitive visible light response, good photochromism, a simple structure, low cost, easy preparation, and suitability for industrial large-scale production, offering promise for applications in the fields of flexible and wearable electronics.

Based on the limited resource model of self-control, we construct a chain mediation model to examine the relationship between parental phubbing and adolescents’ academic burnout, and whether social anxiety and self-control play a mediating role in it. We used 4 questionnaires to investigate parental phubbing, social anxiety, self-control, and adolescents’ academic burnout among 828 high school students in Wuhu and Huangshan City, Anhui Province, China. The findings indicated that: (1) parental phubbing, social anxiety, and self-control all significantly predict adolescents’ academic burnout directly and (2) parental phubbing could indirectly influence adolescents’ academic burnout through three pathways: the separate mediating effect of social anxiety and self-control, and the chain mediating effect on both. The results of this study help parents understand how their phubbing actions affect adolescents’ academic burnout and the mechanism of action.

This study delves into the effects of sample height on consolidation behaviour, utilising the automatic air pressure consolidometer. Extensive tests were conducted on three varieties of dredged silt samples of varying heights from Qianwan, Shenzhen, China. The salient findings can be summarised as follows: (1) Compression curves for samples of different dimensions transitioned through three distinct phases: minimal load disturbance, elastic deformation, and plastic deformation. Notably, the void ratio during the latter two phases diminished as sample height increased. (2) A rising sample height corresponded to a reduced stable strain and compression index. Furthermore, the consolidation coefficient notably diminished with an escalation in the sample height, whereas the structural yield stress remained largely unaffected. (3) Given the disparate formation processes, stress histories, and material compositions between dredged and marine silts, the permeability coefficient of dredged silt was found to be superior to that of marine silt. Within the typical preloading pressure scope (50~300 kPa), the consolidation coefficient of dredged silt was lower compared to marine silt. However, as the consolidation pressure significantly surpassed this threshold, the coefficient disparity between the two silts narrowed.

POEMS syndrome is a plasma cell disease. Clinical manifestations and clinical onset are variable. In recent years, more and more cases of POEMS syndrome with cerebrovascular disease and ischemic stroke have been reported. However, it is rare for patients with POEMS syndrome to present with a cerebrovascular accident as the first clinical manifestation. We presented three cases of POEMS syndrome with cerebral infarction in different phases of the disease. We then searched the literature for studies involving POEMS syndrome complicated with cerebral infarction. There were 81 cases in total. In nine patients, cerebral infarctions occurred before polyneuropathy. Patients with cerebral infarction before polyneuropathy have better prognosis of POEMS than those with cerebral infarction after polyneuropathy.

Abstract DNA (cytosine-5)-methyltransferase 3A (DNMT3A) mutations occur in ~20% of de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients, and >50% of these mutations in AML samples are heterozygous missense alterations within the methyltransferase domain at residue R882. DNMT3A R882 mutations in AML patients promote resistance to anthracycline chemotherapy and drive relapse. In this study, we performed high-throughput screening and identified that oridonin, an ent-kaurene diterpenoid extracted from the Chinese herb Rabdosia rubescens, inhibits DNMT3A R882 mutant leukemic cells at a low-micromolar concentration (IC50 = 2.1 µM) by activating both RIPK1-Caspase-8-Caspase-3-mediated apoptosis and RIPK1-RIPK3-MLKL-mediated necroptosis. The inhibitory effect of oridonin against DNMT3A R882 mutant leukemia cells can also be observed in vivo. Furthermore, oridonin inhibits clonal hematopoiesis of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) with Dnmt3a R878H mutation comparing to normal HSCs by inducing apoptosis and necroptosis. Overall, oridonin is a potential and promising drug candidate or lead compound targeting DNMT3A R882 mutation-driven clonal hematopoiesis and leukemia.

Ralstonia solanacearum, a pathogen causing widespread bacterial wilt disease in numerous crops, currently lacks an optimal control agent. Given the limitations of traditional chemical control methods, including the risk of engendering drug-resistant strains and environmental harm, there is a dire need for sustainable alternatives. One alternative is lysin proteins that selectively lyse bacteria without contributing to resistance development. This work explored the biocontrol potential of the LysP2110-HolP2110 system of Ralstonia solanacearum phage P2110. Bioinformatics analyses pinpointed this system as the primary phage-mediated host cell lysis mechanism. Our data suggest that LysP2110, a member of the Muraidase superfamily, requires HolP2110 for efficient bacterial lysis, presumably via translocation across the bacterial membrane. LysP2110 also exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity in the presence of the outer membrane permeabilizer EDTA. Additionally, we identified HolP2110 as a distinct holin structure unique to the Ralstonia phages, underscoring its crucial role in controlling bacterial lysis through its effect on bacterial ATP levels. These findings provide valuable insights into the function of the LysP2110-HolP2110 lysis system and establish LysP2110 as a promising antimicrobial agent for biocontrol applications. This study underpins the potential of these findings in developing effective and environment-friendly biocontrol strategies against bacterial wilt and other crop diseases.

ABSTRACT The effect of antiretroviral therapy (ART) on CD4+/CD25hi/CD127low T lymphocyte changes in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) is still a matter of debate. From October 2015 to December 2019, peripheral blood from 70 cases of PLWHA were collected for the detection of CD4+/CD25hi/CD127low T lymphocytes by flow cytometry. Statistical analysis was performed to detect changes of CD4+/CD25hi/CD127low T lymphocytes in patients with different duration of ART and different treatment effects. We found that the number of CD4+/CD25hi/CD127low T lymphocytes in ART-naive PLWHA were lower than those in healthy volunteers (10.3±٦.٠ cells/uL vs 31.7±8.0 cells/uL, P < 0.05). CD4+/CD25hi/CD127low T lymphocyte counts increased to 17.8±٤.٠ cells/uL 6 months post-ART and 25.0±١١.٩ cells/uL 9 months post-ART, respectively (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in CD4+/CD25hi/CD127low T lymphocyte counts between PLWHA who reached a complete immune reconstruction after ART and healthy volunteers. The growth of CD4+/CD25hi/CD127low T lymphocyte counts in patients who had baseline CD4 > 200 cells/uL was greater than those who had baseline CD4 ≤ 200 cells/uL (12.6±٤.٦ cells/uL vs 5.6±٥.٠ cells/uL, P = 0.027). CD4+/CD25hi/CD127low T lymphocyte counts were positively correlated with CD4+ T lymphocyte counts (r = 0.923, P < 0.001) and CD4+/CD8+ ratio (r = 0.741, P < 0.001), but were negatively correlated with HIV-VL (r = −0.648, P = 0.000). In conclusion, the results of the present study showed that changes in CD4+/CD25hi/CD127low T lymphocyte counts can be used to assess the effect of ART in PLWHA.

In an electroencephalogram- (EEG-) based brain–computer interface (BCI), a subject can directly communicate with an electronic device using his EEG signals in a safe and convenient way. However, the sensitivity to noise/artifact and the non-stationarity of EEG signals result in high inter-subject/session variability. Therefore, each subject usually spends long and tedious calibration time in building a subject-specific classifier. To solve this problem, we review existing signal processing approaches, including transfer learning (TL), semi-supervised learning (SSL), and a combination of TL and SSL. Cross-subject TL can transfer amounts of labeled samples from different source subjects for the target subject. Moreover, Cross-session/task/device TL can reduce the calibration time of the subject for the target session, task, or device by importing the labeled samples from the source sessions, tasks, or devices. SSL simultaneously utilizes the labeled and unlabeled samples from the target subject. The combination of TL and SSL can take advantage of each other. For each kind of signal processing approaches, we introduce their concepts and representative methods. The experimental results show that TL, SSL, and their combination can obtain good classification performance by effectively utilizing the samples available. In the end, we draw a conclusion and point to research directions in the future.

Owing to the complexity of the sheet pile wall with a relieving platform, there are a large number of factors that affect the mechanical and deformation characteristics of the wall structure. Moreover, studying the influencing factors on the deformation of the retaining wall is beneficial in the selection of design parameters and deformation control. 28 groups of test models of the retaining wall structure are designed to analyze the effect on the deformation of rib pillars and determine the reasonable width and buried depth of the unloading board in this paper. The tests are conducted with and without the unloading board, and different widths and buried depths of the unloading board are also considered. The findings show that, without the external load, the reasonable board width and buried depth are 0.70 times and 0.53 times the wall height. With the external load, the reasonable board width is 0.35 times the wall height, and the large board width cannot effectively reduce the deformation of rib pillars, and the reasonable board width is 0.60 times the wall height. When both the external load and board width are relatively small, the reasonable buried depth is 0.53 times the wall height. However, when the external load is large, the reasonable buried depth is 0.70 times the wall height. The results also show that the setting of the unloading board effectively suppresses the deformation of rib pillars and controls the maximum deformation within an allowable range of the specification.

A new type of retaining wall, the sheet pile wall with a relieving platform, is introduced in this paper. Based on the prototype retaining wall with a height of 12 meters, the model tests with a geometric similarity ratio of 7 are designed and we focus on the model production and analysis on the test results. Some comparative analyses between the measured values and the calculation values by using the theoretical calculation method and finite difference method are carried out, including Earth pressure behind the wall, prepile resistance force, the bending moment, and the deformation of rib pillars in the retaining wall. The results show that Earth pressure behind the wall has a linear increase with the depth and lies between Rankine Earth pressure and Earth pressure at rest. Moreover, the prepile resistance force can be approximated by the m method, and the bending moment can be also used for approximate calculation by the m method and is larger than the results calculated by the finite difference method. It is also observed that there is a zero-displacement point on the pile bottom, and the Earth pressure above the point behind the pile develops from Earth pressure at rest to the active Earth pressure; the Earth pressure under the point behind the pile develops from Earth pressure at rest to the passive Earth pressure. Therefore, the Earth pressure behind the bottom wall is larger than the calculated value by the Rankine theory. Finally, the displacement of the rib pillars is greater than the calculated results using the finite difference method and exceeds the standard requirements, owing to the failure of the retaining wall, and the unloading board needs to be constructed to improve the retaining wall’s behaviour. These findings verify the model’s credibility and provide an underpinning for studying the behavior of the retaining wall.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are major causes of maternal death worldwide and the risk factors are not fully understood. Few studies have investigated the risk factors for HDP among Chinese women. A cohort study involving 84,656 women was conducted to investigate pre-pregnancy BMI, total gestational weight gain (GWG), and GWG during early pregnancy as risk factors for HDP among Chinese women.The study was conducted between 2011-2013 in Wuhan, China, utilizing data from the Maternal and Children Healthcare Information Tracking System of Wuhan. A total of 84,656 women with a live singleton pregnancy were included. Multiple unconditional logistic regression was conducted to evaluate associations between putative risk factors and HDP.Women who were overweight or obese before pregnancy had an elevated risk of developing HDP (overweight: OR = 2.66, 95% CI = 2.32-3.05; obese: OR = 5.53, 95% CI = 4.28-7.13) compared to their normal weight counterparts. Women with total GWG above the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendation had an adjusted OR of 1.72 (95% CI = 1.54-1.93) for HDP compared to women who had GWG within the IOM recommendation. Women with gestational BMI gain >10 kg/m2 during pregnancy had an adjusted OR of 3.35 (95% CI = 2.89-3.89) for HDP, compared to women with a gestational BMI gain 600g/wk: adjusted OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.19-1.84).The results from this study show that maternal pre-pregnancy BMI, early GWG, and total GWG are positively associated with the risk of HDP. Weight control efforts before and during pregnancy may help to reduce the risk of HDP.

Abstract The synchronization phenomenon in nature has been utilized in sensing and timekeeping fields due to its numerous advantages, including amplitude and frequency stabilization, noise reduction, and sensitivity improvement. However, the limited synchronization bandwidth hinders its broader application, and few techniques have been explored to enhance this aspect. In this paper, we conducted theoretical and experimental studies on the unidirectional synchronization characteristics of a resonator with phase lock loop oscillation. A novel enhancement method for the synchronization bandwidth using a parametrically excited MEMS oscillator is proposed, which achieves a remarkably large synchronization bandwidth of 8.85 kHz, covering more than 94% of the hysteresis interval. Importantly, the proposed method exhibits significant potential for high-order synchronization and frequency stabilization compared to the conventional directly excited oscillator. These findings present an effective approach for expanding the synchronization bandwidth, which has promising applications in nonlinear sensing, fully mechanical frequency dividers, and high-precision time references.

Abstract Efficient exploration of geothermal resources is the basis of exploitation and utilization of geothermal resources. In recent years, Geographic Information System (GIS) has been increasingly used for the exploration owing to its power ability to integrate and analyze multiple sources of data related to the formation of geothermal resources, such as geology, geophysics, and geochemistry. Correctly understanding the control effect of evidence factors on geothermal resources is the premise and basis of whether the prediction results of evidence weight model are accurate. Traditionally, the conventional weight of evidence model assume that each evidence factor exerts a uniform controlling effect on the formation and distribution of geothermal resources. However, recent research indicates significant variations in the controlling ability of factors such as faults and granites, influenced by factors like activity levels and crystalline ages. Yet, studies addressing this differential control are lacking. To address this gap, we propose a series of weight of evidence models using abundant geological, geophysical, and geothermal data from the western Sichuan plateau, a high-temperature geothermal hotspot in China. This study aims to investigate the impact of varying controlling abilities of evidence factors on the evaluation model, with faults and granites as a case. Performance metrics include prediction rate, success rate index, receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and prediction rate of geothermal well. The findings of this research reveal that the weight of evidence model developed through the methodology outlined in this study exhibits superior performance compared to the conventional weight of evidence model. This superiority is evidenced by higher prediction rates, success indices, prediction rate of geothermal wells, and larger AUC values of ROC. Among these models, the weight of evidence model considering both fault and granite classification have the best performance in model evaluation indicators, with a prediction rate of 22.528 and a success index of 0.015408 in the very high potential area. The prediction rate and success index of the high potential area are 3.656 and 0.0025, respectively, and the prediction rate and success index of the middle potential area are 1.649 and 0.001128, respectively, and the AUC value is 0.808, indicating that the model has good accuracy. In terms of geothermal well prediction, the total prediction rate of geothermal favorable areas based on fault and granite classification evidence weight model is as high as 47.0526. Therefore, when constructing the weight of evidence model, the influence of the difference control of evidence factors on the formation of geothermal resources should be fully considered. These results underscore the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in enhancing the predictive accuracy and reliability of geothermal resource assessment in this study. Based on the prediction results of the weight of evidence model considering both fault and granite classification, four favorable geothermal areas with abundant surface heat display are identified in this paper, namely Kangding, Litang, Batang and Ganzi-Dege. In addition, the relatively weak surface heat display areas such as Jiulong, Daofu, Luhuo and Derong also show high geothermal potential. Some attention should be paid to geothermal exploration in the future.

With the continuous miniaturization of electronic devices, microelectromechanical system (MEMS) oscillators that can be combined with integrated circuits have attracted increasing attention. This study reports a MEMS Huygens clock based on the synchronization principle, comprising two synchronized MEMS oscillators and a frequency compensation system. The MEMS Huygens clock improved short-time stability, improving the Allan deviation by a factor of 3.73 from 19.3 to 5.17 ppb at 1 s. A frequency compensation system based on the MEMS oscillator’s temperature-frequency characteristics was developed to compensate for the frequency shift of the MEMS Huygens clock by controlling the resonator current. This effectively improved the long-term stability of the oscillator, with the Allan deviation improving by 1.6343 × 105 times to 30.9 ppt at 6000 s. The power consumption for compensating both oscillators simultaneously is only 2.85 mW∙°C−1. Our comprehensive solution scheme provides a novel and precise engineering solution for achieving high-precision MEMS oscillators and extends synchronization applications in MEMS.

Background: As metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma becomes increasingly challenging to treat, immunotherapy has emerged as a new research direction. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) influence the occurrence, invasion, and metastasis of tumors. Apolipoprotein E (APOE) can regulate the polarization changes of macrophages and participate in the remodeling of the tumor microenvironment. However, the role of APOE in regulating the polarization and biological functions of TAMs in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remains unclear, as it acts as a dual biomarker. Methods: We probed APOE expression in PTC tissues using immunohistochemical staining. A cell co-culture model was established where different APOE-expressing K1 cells were co-cultured with THP-1-derived M0 macrophages. An in-depth analysis of macrophage polarization behavior was performed using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and western blotting. Subsequently, the impact of APOE-regulated macrophages on tumor cell behavior, especially proliferation, migration, and invasion, was evaluated utilizing IncuCyte ZOOM system, flow cytometry, colony formation, and scratch experiments. Finally, we used a xenograft model to confirm the effects of APOE on PTC tumorigenesis. Results: Tumor dimensions, stage, and lymphatic metastases were significantly associated with increased APOE expression in PTC tissues. K1 cells were markedly limited in their proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities when APOE expression was silenced, a process mediated by the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling axis. Moreover, APOE is a key facilitator of the enhancement of the anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-10 and TGF-β1. In PTC cellular models, APOE contributed to the phenotypic shift of THP-1 derived macrophages towards an M2 phenotypic polarization, predominantly through the modulation of IL-10. Furthermore, in vivo studies involving athymic nude mice have demonstrated pivotal role of APOE in tumor progression and the induction of M2-like TAM polarization. Conclusion: Our results elucidated that APOE could promote the shift of TAMs from M0-type to M2-type polarization by regulating inflammatory factors expressions in K1 cell through the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB pathway. These findings are crucial for understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying PTC pathogenesis and for developing immunological drugs to treat this disease.

Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is one of the most important diseases in solanaceous plants, including peppers. It generally tends to be more serious under warm−temperature and moist (WM) conditions than at moist room−temperature (RM) conditions. Although immunity mechanisms at room temperature have been intensively studied, the mechanisms underlying WM conditions remain poorly understood. Herein, the pepper cysteine protease CaZingipain2 was expressed and functionally characterized in pepper immunity against R. solanacearum at WM conditions and at room temperature. The results showed that CaZingipain2 localized to the nucleus and was upregulated at the transcript level in pepper plants upon R. solanacearum infection under WM conditions (RSWM). Virus−induced gene silencing of CaZingipain2 significantly increased the susceptibility of pepper plants to RSWM, and was coupled with the downregulation of CaPRP1 and CaMgst3, which are specifically related to pepper immunity against RSWM, according to our previous studies, while its overexpression significantly reduced the susceptibility of N. benethamiana plants to RSWM compared to that of wild−type plants. In addition, our data showed that CaZingipain2 also acts positively in pepper immunity against R. solanacearum infection at room temperature by upregulating the SA− and JA−responsive PR genes, including CaNPR1 and CaDEF1. All these results indicate that CaZingipain2 improves pepper immunity against R. solanacearum under WM conditions and at room temperature by regulating different PR genes.

Abstract Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who exhibit elevated blood eosinophil levels often experience worsened lung function and more severe emphysema. This implies the potential involvement of eosinophils in the development of emphysema. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the development of eosinophil-mediated emphysema remain unclear. In this study, we employed single-cell RNA sequencing to identify eosinophil subgroups in mouse models of asthma and emphysema, followed by functional analyses of these subgroups. Assessment of accumulated eosinophils unveiled distinct transcriptomes in the lungs of mice with elastase-induced emphysema and ovalbumin-induced asthma. Depletion of eosinophils through the use of anti-interleukin-5 antibodies ameliorated elastase-induced emphysema. A particularly noteworthy discovery is that eosinophil-derived cathepsin L contributed to the degradation of the extracellular matrix, thereby leading to emphysema in pulmonary tissue. Inhibition of cathepsin L resulted in a reduction of elastase-induced emphysema in a mouse model. Importantly, eosinophil levels correlated positively with serum cathepsin L levels, which were higher in emphysema patients than those without emphysema. Expression of cathepsin L in eosinophils demonstrated a direct association with lung emphysema in COPD patients. Collectively, these findings underscore the significant role of eosinophil-derived cathepsin L in extracellular matrix degradation and remodeling, and its relevance to emphysema in COPD patients. Consequently, targeting eosinophil-derived cathepsin L could potentially offer a therapeutic avenue for emphysema patients. Further investigations are warranted to explore therapeutic strategies targeting cathepsin L in emphysema patients.

Composite post insulators are crucial facilities in substations and are prone to significant damage during seismic disasters. However, existing research lacks seismic motion models suitable for power facilities and rarely involves stochastic models. Furthermore, considering the non-stationary characteristics of seismic motion, predicting the response of nonlinear systems under non-stationary excitation becomes exceedingly challenging. In view of this, the stochastic response of composite post insulators under the non-stationary stochastic seismic excitation appropriate for power facilities has been studied. First, a stochastic ground motion model, conforming to the Code for Seismic Design of Electrical Insulators in China, is established, incorporating amplitude and frequency non-stationarity. Next, the nonlinear dynamic system, accounting for multi-section composite post insulators and the nonlinearity of flange connections, is established under stochastic ground motion conditions. Based on this stochastic nonlinear dynamic model, the dynamic behavior of the system was analyzed using the stochastic dynamics method (the wavelet-Galerkin method), and the influence of nonlinear stiffness on the system response was discussed. The stochastic seismic response analysis method proposed in this paper can serve as a valuable reference for the seismic design of pillar-type electrical equipment.

Abstract MEMS resonators exhibit rich dynamic behaviors under the internal resonance regime. In this work, we present a novel MEMS bifurcation sensor that exploits frequency unlocking due to a 1:3 internal resonance between two electrostatically coupled micro-resonators. The proposed detection mechanism allows the sensor to operate in binary (digital) and analog modes, depending on whether the sensor merely detects a significant jump event in the peak frequency upon unlocking or measures the shift in the peak frequency after unlocking and uses it in conjunction with a calibration curve to estimate the corresponding change in stimulus. We validate the success of this sensor paradigm by experimentally demonstrating charge detection. High charge resolutions are achieved in binary mode, up to 0.137 fC, and in analog mode, up to 0.01 fC. The proposed binary sensor enables extraordinarily high detection resolutions due to the excellent frequency stability under internal resonance and the high signal-to-noise ratio of the shift in peak frequency. Our findings offer new opportunities for high-performance ultrasensitive sensors.

Synchronization in microstructures is a widely explored domain due to its diverse dynamic traits and promising practical applications. Within synchronization analysis, the synchronization bandwidth serves as a pivotal metric. While current research predominantly focuses on symmetric evaluations of synchronization bandwidth, the investigation into potential asymmetries within nonlinear oscillators remains unexplored, carrying implications for sensor application performance. This paper conducts a comprehensive exploration employing straight and arch beams capable of demonstrating linear, hardening, and softening characteristics to thoroughly scrutinize potential asymmetry within the synchronization region. Through the introduction of weak harmonic forces to induce synchronization within the oscillator, we observe distinct asymmetry within its synchronization range. Additionally, we present a robust theoretical model capable of fully capturing the linear, hardening, and softening traits of resonators synchronized to external perturbation. Further investigation into the effects of feedback strength and phase delay on synchronization region asymmetry, conducted through analytical and experimental approaches, reveals a consistent alignment between theoretical predictions and experimental outcomes. These findings hold promise in providing crucial technical insights to enhance resonator performance and broaden the application landscape of MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology.

This study prepared silicon oxide anode materials with nitrogen-doped carbon matrices (SiOx/C–N) through silicon-containing polyester thermal carbonization. Melamine was introduced as a nitrogen source during the experiment. This nitrogen doping process resulted in a porous structure in the carbon matrices, a fact confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Pyridinic and quaternary nitrogen, but mainly tertiary nitrogen, were generated, as shown via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electrochemical tests confirmed that, as anode materials for a lithium-ion battery, SiOx/C–N provided better cycle stability, improved rate capability, and lower Li+ diffusion resistance. The best performance showed an activated capacity at 493.5 mAh/g, preserved at 432.8 mAh/g after the 100th cycle, with 87.7% total Columbic efficiency. Those without nitrogen doping gave 1126.7 mAh/g, 249.0 mAh/g, and 22.1%, respectively. The most noteworthy point was that, after 100 cycles, anodes without nitrogen doping were pulverized into fine powders (SEM); meanwhile, in the case of anodes with nitrogen doping, powders of a larger size (0.5–1.0 µm) formed, with the accumulation of surrounding cavities. We suggest that the formation of more prominent powders may have resulted from the more substantial nitrogen-doped carbon matrices, which prevented the anode from further breaking down to a smaller size. The volume expansion stress decreased when the powders decreased to nanosize, which is why the nanosized silicon anode materials showed better cycling stability. When the anodes were cracked into powders with a determined diameter, the stress from volume expansion decreased to a level at which the powders could preserve their shape, and the breakage of the powders was stopped. Hence, the diameters of the final reserved powders are contingent on the strength of the matrix. As reported, nitrogen-doped carbon matrices are more robust than those not doped with nitrogen. Thus, in our research, anodes with nitrogen-doped carbon matrices presented more large-diameter powders, as SEM confirmed. Anodes with nitrogen doping will not be further broken at a larger diameter. At this point, the SEI film will not show continuous breakage and formation compared to the anode without doping. This was validated by the lower deposition content of the SEI-film-related elements (phosphorous and fluorine) in the cycled anodes with nitrogen doping. The anode without nitrogen doping presented higher content, meaning that the SEI films were broken many times during lithiation/delithiation (EDS mapping).

The force-balanced accelerometer (FBA), unlike other types of sensors, incorporates a closed-loop control. The efficacy of the system is contingent not solely on the hardware, but more critically on the formulation of the control algorithm. Conventional control strategies are usually designed for the purpose of response minimization of the sensitive elements, which limits the measurement accuracy and applicable frequency bandwidth of FBAs. In this paper, based on the model predictive control (MPC), a control algorithm of a force-balance accelerometer considering time delay is designed. The variable augmentation method is proposed to convert the force-balance control into an easy-handed measurement error minimization control problem. The discretization method is applied to deal with the time delay problem in the closed loop. The control algorithm is integrated into a practical FBA. The effectiveness of the proposed control is demonstrated through experiments conducted in an ultra-quiet chamber, as well as simulations. The results show that the closed loop in the FBA has a time delay 10 times of the control period, and, utilizing the proposed control, the acceleration signals can be accurately measured with a frequency range larger than 500 Hz. Meanwhile, the vibration response of the sensitive element of the controlled FBA is maintained at the level of microns, which guarantees a large measurement range of the FBA.

AbstractInvestigating the genesis of geothermal resources requires a thorough understanding of the heat source mechanism, which is also a vital basis for the efficient exploration and utilization of geothermal resources. Situated in the eastern Himalayan syntax, western Sichuan is considered to be one of the main concentration regions of high-temperature geothermal resources in China. To date, various studies have been carried out to reveal the heat source and genesis of the abundant high-temperature resources in this area; however, studies on the contribution of the radioactive heat generated by the widely distributed granitoids to the high-temperature geothermal resources remain scarce. In order to resolve this knowledge gap, we attempted to obtain evidence from the geochemical data published in the literature in the past few decades. A total of 548 radiogenic heat production rate data were determined. The statistical data indicate that the average concentrations of the heat-producing elements U, Th, and K are 6.09±5.22 ppm, 26.74±16.78 ppm, and 3.51±0.82%, respectively. The calculated heat production values of the granitoids vary from 0.52 to 10.86 μW/m3, yielding an arithmetic average value of 3.74±2.15 μW/m3, which is higher than that of global Mesozoic–Cenozoic granites (3.09±1.62 μW/m3). Based on the heat production values, the capacity of the granitic batholiths to store heat was assessed, and the Dongcuo pluton was found to be the largest heat reservoir (382.88×1013 J/a). The distribution of the crustal heat flow was examined using the calculated heat production data and the stratigraphic structure obtained via deep seismic sounding in the study area. The results indicate that the crustal heat flow is 48.3–56.2 mW/m2, which is mainly contributed by the radioactive decay in the granitoids in the upper crust. The fact that it accounts for nearly half of the regional background heat flow indicates that the radiogenic heat from the granitoids is an important heat source for the formation of the thermal anomaly and the high-temperature geothermal resources in the study area. Thus, the results obtained in this study highlight the importance of the widely distributed granitoids to high-temperature geothermal resources in western Sichuan.

Silicon-containing polyester from tetramethoxysilane, ethylene glycol, and o-Phthalic anhydride were used as encapsulating materials for silicon nano powders (SiNP) via electrospinning, with Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as spinning additives. In the correct quantities, SiNP could be well encapsulated in nano fibers (200–400 nm) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The encapsulating materials were then carbonized to a Si-O-C material at 755 °C (Si@C-SiNF-5 and Si@C-SiNF-10, with different SiNP content). Fiber structure and SiNP crystalline structure were reserved even after high-temperature treatment, as SEM and X-ray diffraction (XRD) verified. When used as lithium ion battery (LIB) anode materials, the cycling stability of SiNPs increased after encapsulation. The capacity of SiNPs decreased to ~10 mAh/g within 30 cycles, while those from Si@C-SiNF-5 and Si@C-SiNF-10 remained over 500 mAh/g at the 30th cycle. We also found that adequate SiNP content is necessary for good encapsulation and better cycling stability. In the anode from Si@C-SiNF-10 in which SiNPs were not well encapsulated, fibers were broken and pulverized as SEM confirmed; thus, its cycling stability is poorer than that from Si@C-SiNF-5.

Objective Although vomiting in the first trimester has been reported to be associated with preterm birth (PTB), findings supporting this association remain inconsistent. Our aim was to assess the association between vomiting and PTB, as well as evaluate if the association is modified by pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI). Design A retrospective cohort study. Setting Wuhan, a central city of China. Participants A total of 317 463 pregnant women who had a live, singleton newborn from 1 January 2010 to 23 May 2016 were enrolled in our study. Main outcome measure PTB was defined as gestational age <37 gestational weeks. Gestational age was calculated using reports from mothers based on the first day of their last menstrual period. An ultrasound was routinely used to determine gestational age before 12 gestational weeks. Results Of the 317 463 pregnant women, 29.88% (94 857) experienced vomiting in the first trimester and 5.00% (15 889) experienced a PTB. Vomiting in the first trimester increased the risk for PTB and the multivariable adjusted OR was 1.05 (95% CI 1.02 to 1.09). In the stratified analyses, the association of vomiting in the first trimester was significant among underweight women (adjusted OR=1.08, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.17) and normal pre-pregnancy BMI women (adjusted OR=1.06, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.11), but not in overweight women (adjusted OR=1.01, 95% CI 0.90 to 1.14) and obese women (adjusted OR=0.93, 95% CI 0.73 to 1.19). Conclusions Our study indicates that vomiting in the first trimester was associated with PTB. Additionally, women with underweight and normal pre-pregnancy BMI who experienced vomiting are more likely to have a PTB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since correlated stochastic processes are often presented in practical problems, feasible methods to model and generate correlated processes appropriately are needed for analysis and simulation. The present paper systematically presents three methods to generate two correlated stationary Gaussian processes. They are (1) the method of linear filters, (2) the method of series expansion with random amplitudes, and (3) the method of series expansion with random phases. All three methods intend to match the power spectral density for each process but use information of different levels of correlation. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed.

Synchronization phenomenon first discovered in Huygens’ clock shows that the rhythms of oscillating objects can be adjusted via an interaction. Here we show that the frequency stability of a piezoresistive micromechanical oscillator can be enhanced via synchronization. The micromechanical clamped-clamped beam oscillator is built up using the electrostatic driving and piezoresistive sensing technique and the synchronization phenomenon is observed after coupling it to an external oscillator. An enhancement of frequency stability is obtained in the synchronization state. The influences of the synchronizing perturbation intensity and frequency detuning applied on the oscillator are studied experimentally. A theoretical analysis of phase noise leads to an analytical formula for predicting Allan deviation of the frequency output of the piezoresistive oscillator, which successfully explains the experimental observations and the mechanism of frequency stability enhancement via synchronization.

The combination of emulsified diesel and low temperature combustion (LTC) technology has great potential in reducing engine emissions. A visualization study on the spray and combustion characteristics of water emulsified diesel was conducted experimentally in a constant volume chamber under conventional and LTC conditions. The effects of ambient temperature on the evaporation, ignition and combustion characteristics of water emulsified diesel were studied under cold, evaporating and combustion conditions. Experimental results showed that the ambient temperature had little effect on the spray structures, in terms of the liquid core length, the spray shape and the spray area. However, higher ambient temperature slightly reduced the Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) of the spray droplets. The auto-ignition delay time increased significantly with the decrease of the ambient temperature. The ignition process always occurred at the entrainment region near the front periphery of the liquid core. This entrainment region was evolved from the early injected fuel droplets which were heated and mixed by the continuous entrainment until the local temperature and equivalence ratio reached the ignition condition. The maximum value of integrated natural flame luminosity (INFL) reduced by 60% when the ambient temperature dropped from 1000 to 800 K, indicating a significant decrease of the soot emissions could be achieved by LTC combustion mode than the conventional diesel engines.
