Cattle tracing databases have become major resources for representing demographic processes of livestock and assessing potential risk of infections spreading by trade. The herds registered in these databases are nodes of a network of commercial movements, which can be altered to lower the risk of disease transmission. In this study, we develop an algorithm aimed at reducing the number of infected animals and herds, by rewiring specific movements responsible for trade flows from high- to low-prevalence herds. The algorithm is coupled with a generic computational model based on the French cattle movement tracing database (BDNI), and used to describe different scenarios for the spread of infection within and between herds from a recent outbreak (epidemic) or a five-year-old outbreak (endemic). Results show that rewiring successfully contains infections to a limited number of herds, especially if the outbreak is recent and the estimation of disease prevalence frequent, while the respective impact of the parameters of the algorithm depend on the infection parameters. Allowing any animal movement from high to low-prevalence herds reduces the effectiveness of the algorithm in epidemic settings, while frequent and fine-grained prevalence assessments improve the impact of the algorithm in endemic settings. Our approach focusing on a few commercial movements is expected to lead to substantial improvements in the control of a targeted disease, although changes in the network structure should be monitored for potential vulnerabilities to other diseases. BACKGROUND: Salt stress has recently emerged as one of the most significant abiotic stresses with negative impact on crop production. Photosynthesis is a vital biochemical process in plants, very sensitive to environmental constraints, including salt stress. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of salt stress on photosystem II in the leaves of blackberry cultivars (Rubus fructicosus L.). METHODS: Two blackberry cultivars (Thornfree and Boysen) were exposed to salt stress (20, 40, and 60 mM NaCl) for 28 days in in vitro culture. The photosynthetic activity was evaluated by probing chlorophyll a fluorescence (JIP test) and photosynthetic pigments. RESULTS: The maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm), performance indexes (PIABS and PItotal), and photosynthetic driving force (DFABS) were greatly affected by salt stress in the leaves of Boysen cultivar. Lower photosynthetic efficiency was confirmed by the increased values of absorption flux per RC (ABS/RC), trapping flux per PSII RC (TR0/RC), dissipation flux per RC (DI0/RC), decreased values of chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, disruption in the interaction between the light-harvesting complex and the core proteins of PSII, as well as disruption of the oxygen-evolving complex. CONCLUSIONS: The provided informations suggest that the photosynthetic apparatus of Thornfree cultivar was found to be more tolerant to salt stress compared to Boysen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: As the new generation of power scheme, smart grid is proposed to overcome the shortcomings of traditional systems, such as low efficiency and reliability. In this article, a novel lattice‐based secure primitive for privacy‐preserving smart grid communications is proposed, which has the remarkable characteristics, such as scalable multi‐dimensional fine‐grained power data structure and differential privacy security. First, combining with the lattice‐based data encryption technology, while effectively resisting quantum attacks, the method of simultaneous processing of multi‐dimensional data is innovated. Second, through combining the additive homomorphism of the lattice‐based cryptosystem and the Chinese remainder theorem, the data aggregation mechanism that can directly perform homomorphic operations on compressed ciphertext is constructed. Thanks to the above innovative design ideas, the proposed scheme not only significantly improves the efficiency of data communication and processing, greatly reduces the computational cost of the intermediate entity, but also realizes the data confidentiality and information privacy. Finally, observing the decentralized topology of communication nodes in the typical cyber‐physical system of smart grid, the localized differential privacy technology is leveraged to optimize and balance the utility, security, and efficiency of differential privacy. Extensive performance evaluations are conducted to illustrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the state‐of‐the‐art similar schemes in terms of computation complexity and communication cost. Blastocystis sp. is an enteric protist found in humans and a wide range of animal hosts. Genetic variations were established among the 38 different subtypes detected so far, 14 of which are commonly found in human and animal hosts. The aim of the present study is to estimate the prevalence of the common Blastocystis subtypes and evaluate the possible correlation with several variables (gender, age, symptoms, domestic animals...), among patients from the southern region of Syria. Fecal samples were collected from individuals suffering from gastrointestinal complaints. Microscopic examination along with genotype analyses using seven pairs of subtype-specific primers was performed. Our results revealed the presence of Blastocystis sp. in 46 isolates out of the 60 samples microscopically studied (76.7%); single infection was detected in 24 isolates whereas co-infection with other protozoa was identified in 22 ones. Molecular detection targeting the SSU rRNA gene revealed a 100% positive presence of Blastocystis sp. in all the samples. Genotyping results detected the presence of five different subtypes (ST1-ST5) with varying proportions. However, ST1 was the dominant subtype observed (66.7%). Mixed subtype infections were found in 9 isolates (15%). Three samples remained undefined, nonetheless. Our statistical results showed no significant correlation between Blastocystis STs infection and the different studied variables. In conclusion, this study provides the first genetic characterization of Blastocystis subtypes prevalence in patients from the southern region of Syria. ST1 distribution was highly predominant. Further molecular studies are needed to estimate the prevalence of Blastocystis sp. infection in other regions in Syria and to understand the epidemiology and sources of transmission to humans. Argas persicus (the fowl tick) is a species of soft tick commonly associated with poultry farms. It has a wide geographic distribution and colonizes different climate regions. Morphological identification of A. persicus has been reported worldwide, but genetic data regarding its molecular characterization is limited. The present study provides data for morphological identification and genetic characterization of A. persicus collected from domestic birds in traditional farms from east Algeria (Setif region). Additionally, A. persicus samples originating from Gansu province in China were included for comparative molecular study. In total, 1518 ticks collected from 30 infested farms were examined and morphologically identified as A. persicus. Furthermore, the 14 tick samples obtained from China were morphologically identified as A. persicus. Molecular analysis of 30 ticks from Algeria (one tick from each infested farm) and the 14 Chinese samples based on PCR, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis of three mitochondrial genetic markers (16S rRNA, 12S rRNA, and cox1) confirmed morphological results where all samples belonged to the A. persicus group. However, phylogenetic analysis showed that all Algerian samples and two Chinese samples belong to A. persicus sensu stricto (s.s.), while the remaining Chinese samples represented A. persicus sensu lato (s.l.) (divergent lineage). The present study confirms the occurrence of A. persicus s.s. both in Algeria and China, as well as provides novel molecular data for a distinct Chinese lineage of A. persicus. Omphalitis, an infection caused by various bacteria entering the exposed umbilicus or bloodstream, significantly contributes to chick mortality within the first week post-hatch, often due to suboptimal hygiene practices during hatching. This study aimed to characterise the effects of omphalitis on day-old chicks (DOCs) by examining the anatomical and pathological changes. Necropsies were performed on four DOCs at Poultry Breeding Development Center Jatiwangi, Majalengka, West Java, Indonesia. Observations revealed that the infected chicks had small body sizes, dull feathers, enlarged yolk sacs, and unhealed umbilici. Anatomical pathology revealed abdominal distension, necrotic yolk stalks, and greenish, foul-smelling yolk sacs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ectoparasitic fauna of 397 conveniently sampled domestic birds consisting of 213 chickens, 128 turkeys, 21 ducks, 19 guinea fowls, 8 pigeons and 8 geese were investigated in Maiduguri, Borno State. A total of one hundred and fifty-two 152 (38.29%) birds were infested with one ectoparasitic species or the other comprising of 115 (54.00%) chickens, 33 (25.78%) turkeys, 1 (5.26%) guinea fowl and 3 (37.50%) pigeons. No infestation was encountered among geese and ducks examined. The infestation rate differed significantly based on sex and age (p<0.05), but not the management system. Similarly, the occurrence varied significantly (p<0.05) based on locations of sampling (p<0.00001) and species of poultry examined (p<0.000049). Furthermore, 116 (29.21%) of the total birds examined had a single infestation with either louse, tick or mite species, while 36(9.06%) birds had mixed infestation with species from two or more of these ectoparasitic groups. Among the parasites encountered, lice present on 146 (36.77%) birds were the most prevalent, followed by mites 28(7.05%) and ticks 15(3.78%). Nine different species of ectoparasites belonging to the orders Mallophaga and Acarina were identified in the study. Menopon gallinae, Lipeurus caponis, Menacanthus stramineus, Goniodes gigas, Goniocotes gallinae and Columbicola columbae were the lice identified, while Cnemidocoptes mutans and Ornithonyssus bursa were the only species of mite identified. The poultry tick, Argas persicus was the only tick species found. Conclusively, the study revealed a high but variable burden of ectoparasitic infestation among poultry species examined, and that ectoparasites are common in minor poultry species as they do occur in chickens under different management systems in the study area. Summary: The smart grid is a new and promising technology integrating new information and communication technologies to improve the distribution and consumption of electricity between energy suppliers and their end customers. However, this advanced solution is facing a serious security problem as regards the interception and falsification of power consumption data, hence generating falsified electricity consumption bills. This issue of security needs to be promptly and efficiently handled. Clearly, it is of paramount importance to have a security mechanism to avoid such losses. Our work focuses on this issue. It particularly concerns the development of a security mechanism to ensure a completely secure communication between energy suppliers and their consumers while preserving the privacy of end customers in terms of protection of their personal information including their identities. Abstract: The dispersion behavior of SiC powders in various concentration of mullite sol was studied by zeta potential, rheological, and sedimentation measurements. Effect of pH, sol concentration, solid loading on the rheological properties are discussed in detail. The lowest viscosity and sedimentation was obtained for 45 wt% SiC powders dispersed in 15 wt% mullite sol, at pH ~2. The adsorption isotherms belong to Langmuir type and optimum concentration of mullite for maximum dispersion was found to be ~0.036 g/m2. The stabilization mechanism of SiC powder into mullite precursor sol was explained by Derjaguin‐Landau‐Vervey‐Overbeek (DLVO) theory. Coating was confirmed by transmittance electron microscopy and energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy analysis. Further sintering of the mullite‐coated SiC powder compact at 1300°C produced porous SiC ceramic with porosity ~40 vol% and pore diameter ~3 μm. The corrosion behavior of the ceramics was studied in strong acid medium at 90°C and compared with the ceramics obtained from uncoated SiC powder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
