Abstract

The accretion onto the black hole in the system HDE 226868/Cygnus X-1 is powered by the strong line driven stellar wind of the O-type donor star. We study the X-ray properties of the stellar wind in the hard state of Cyg X-1 as determined with data from the Chandra High Energy Transmission Gratings. Large density and temperature inhomogeneities are present in the wind, with a fraction of the wind consisting of clumps of matter with higher density and lower temperature embedded in a photoionized gas. Absorption dips observed in the light curve are believed to be caused by these clumps. This work concentrates on the non-dip spectra as a function of orbital phase. The spectra show lines of H-like and He-like ions of S, Si, Na, Mg, Al and highly ionized Fe (Fe xvii-Fe xxiv). We measure velocity shifts, column densities, and thermal broadening of the line series. The excellent quality of these five observations allows us to investigate the orbital phase dependence of these parameters. We show that the absorber is located close to the black hole. Doppler shifted lines point at a complex wind structure in this region, while emission lines seen in some observations are from a denser medium than the absorber. The observed line profiles are phase dependent. Their shapes vary from pure, symmetric absorption at the superior conjunction to P Cygni profiles at the inferior conjunction of the black hole., Comment: A&A, accepted (26 pages, 18 figures)

Abstract

We report on the analysis of the broad Fe Kalpha line feature of Cygnus X-1 in the spectra of four simultaneous hard intermediate state observations made with the X-ray Multiple Mirror mission (XMM-Newton), the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), and the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL). The high quality of the XMM-Newton data taken in the Modified Timing Mode of the EPIC-pn camera provides a great opportunity to investigate the broadened Fe Kalpha reflection line at 6.4keV with a very high signal to noise ratio. The 4-500keV energy range is used to constrain the underlying continuum and the reflection at higher energies. We first investigate the data by applying a phenomenological model that consists of the sum of an exponentially cutoff power law and relativistically smeared reflection. Additionally, we apply a more physical approach and model the irradiation of the accretion disk directly from the lamp post geometry. All four observations show consistent values for the black hole parameters with a spin of $a\sim 0.9$, in agreement with recent measurements from reflection and disk continuum fitting. The inclination is found to be $i\sim30^\circ$, consistent with the orbital inclination and different from inclination measurements made during the soft state, which show a higher inclination. Abstract

In our self-similar, analytical, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) accretion–ejection solution, the density at the base of the outflow is explicitly dependent on the disc accretion rate – a unique property of this class of solutions. We had earlier found that the ejection index |$p \gt \sim 0.1 (\dot{M}_{\rm{acc}} \propto r^p)$| is a key MHD parameter that decides if the flow can cause absorption lines in the high resolution X-ray spectra of black hole binaries. Here, we choose three dense warm solutions with p  = 0.1, 0.3, 0.45 and carefully develop a methodology to generate spectra which are convolved with the Athena and XRISM response functions to predict what they will observe seeing through such MHD outflows. In this paper two other external parameters were varied – extent of the disc, |$\rm {r_o|_{\rm{max}}} = 10^5, \, 10^6 \, \, \rm {r_G}$|⁠ , and the angle of the line of sight, i ∼ 10–25°. Resultant absorption lines (H and He-like Fe, Ca, Ar) change in strength and their profiles manifest varying degrees of asymmetry. We checked if (a) the lines and (ii) the line asymmetries are detected, in our suit of synthetic Athena and XRISM spectra. Our analysis shows that Athena should detect the lines and their asymmetries for a standard 100 ks observation of a 100 mCrab source – lines with equivalent width as low as a few eV should be detected if the 6–8 keV counts are larger than 104–105 even for the least favourable simulated cases. Abstract

In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced 'spectral-timing-polarimetry' techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process., Accepted for publication on Sci. 11. Chandra identification of two AGN discovered by INTEGRAL.

Abstract

Here, we report on observations of two hard X-ray sources that were originally discovered with the INTEGRAL satellite: IGR J04059+5416 and IGR J08297-4250.We use the Chandra X-ray Observatory to localize the sources and then archival near-IR images to identify the counterparts. Both sources have counterparts in the catalogue of extended 2 Micron All-Sky Survey sources, and the counterpart to IGR J04059+5416 has been previously identified as a galaxy. Thus, we place IGR J04059+5416 in the class of active galactic nuclei (AGN), and we suggest that IGR J08297-4250 is also an AGN. If this identification is correct, the near-IR images suggest that the host galaxy of IGR J08297-4250 may be merging with a smaller nearby galaxy. For IGR J04059+5416, the 0.3-86 keV spectrum from Chandra and INTEGRAL is consistent with an absorbed power-law with a column density of NH = (3.1-1.5+2.0) x 1022 cm-2 and a photon index of Γ = 1.4 ± 0.7, and we suggest that it is a Seyfert galaxy. For IGR J08297-4250, the photon index is similar, Γ = 1.5 ± 0.8, but the source is highly absorbed (NH = (6.1-4.3+10.1) x 1023 cm-2). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

GRS 1915+105 is a very peculiar black hole binary that exhibits accretion-related states that are not observed in any other stellar-mass black hole system. One of these states, however - referred to as the plateau state - may be related to the canonical hard state of black hole X-ray binaries. Both the plateau and hard state are associated with steady, relatively lower X-ray emission and flat/inverted radio emission, that is sometimes resolved into compact, self-absorbed jets. However, while generally black hole binaries quench their jets when the luminosity becomes too high, GRS 1915+105 seems to sustain them despite the fact that it accretes at near- or super-Eddington rates. In order to investigate the relationship between the plateau and the hard state, we fit two multiwavelength observations using a steady-state outflow-dominated model, developed for hard-state black hole binaries. The data sets consist of quasi-simultaneous observations in radio, near-infrared and X-ray bands. Interestingly, we find both significant differences between the two plateau states, as well as between the best-fitting model parameters and those representative of the hard state. We discuss our interpretation of these results, and the possible implications for GRS 1915+105's relationship to canonical black hole candidates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Microquasar outbursts are characterized by spectral state transitions. The transitions between states characterized by a hard spectrum and those characterized by a soft spectrum are of particular interest. Besides drastic spectral and timing changes, these transitions often show discrete ejections detectable in the radio domain. The mechanisms giving birth to the ejections, the links with accretion and the exact nature of the ejected material are still largely unknown. We present systematic X–ray spectral analysis prior to the ejection in several microquasars, and show that, in each case, the properties of the corona drastically evolve, while that of the disc remain roughly constant. We intepret this behavior as possibly due to an ejection of the corona at the spectral transition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Psychology as a science professes a dedication to diversity in many forms including celebrating diverse perspectives and people. Nevertheless, women and people of color, both historically and currently, face barriers to their advancement in the field. Illustrative of one of the challenges that women and psychologists of color face, undergraduate students know very little about psychology's diverse historical roots including eminent pioneers who are women and people of color. Junior and senior psychology majors completed a name recognition task which included 42 pioneers in psychology, 21 of who were women, and 9 who were people of color. Participants recognized eminent women and people of color at significantly lower rates as compared to White, male pioneers (z = -12.95, p < .001, r = -.82; z = -10.62, p < .001, r = -.68, respectively). Having completed a History of Psychology course increased participants' ability to recognize pioneers (U = 738.00, z = -3.79, p < .001, r = -.38) but primarily benefited White, male pioneers. Because psychology majors, professionals, and practitioners are an increasingly diverse group, implications for the psychology curriculum and minoritized students are discussed.
