Abstract

In an attempt to further characterise the near-Earth asteroid (NEA) population we present 38 new light-curves acquired between September 2020 and November 2023 for NEAs (7335) 1989 JA, (7822) 1991 CS, (154244) 2002 KL6 and (159402) 1999 AP10, obtained from observations taken at the Teide Observatory (Tenerife, Spain). With these new observations along with archival data, we computed their first shape models and spin solutions by applying the light curve inversion method. The obtained rotation periods are in good agreement with those reported in previous works, with improved uncertainties. Additionally, besides the constant period models for (7335) 1989 JA, (7822) 1991 CS and (159402) 1999 AP10, our results for (154244) 2002 KL6 suggest that it could be affected by a Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack acceleration with a value of $\upsilon \simeq -7 \times 10^{-9}$ rad d$^{-2}$. This would be one of the first detections of this effect slowing down an asteroid.

Abstract

The transit method allows the detection and characterization of planetary systems by analyzing stellar light curves. Convolutional neural networks appear to offer a viable solution for automating these analyses. In this research, two 1D convolutional neural network models, which work with simulated light curves in which transit-like signals were injected, are presented. One model operates on complete light curves and estimates the orbital period, and the other one operates on phase-folded light curves and estimates the semimajor axis of the orbit and the square of the planet-to-star radius ratio. Both models were tested on real data from TESS light curves with confirmed planets to ensure that they are able to work with real data. The results obtained show that 1D CNNs are able to characterize transiting exoplanets from their host star's detrended light curve and, furthermore, reducing both the required time and computational costs compared with the current detection and characterization algorithms.

Abstract

We present 24 new dense lightcurves of the near-Earth asteroids (3103) Eger, (161989) Cacus, (2100) Ra-Shalom and (12711) Tukmit, obtained with the Instituto Astrof\'isico Canarias 80 and Telescopio Abierto Remoto 2 telescopes at the Teide Observatory (Tenerife, Spain) during 2021 and 2022, in the framework of projects visible NEAs observations survey and NEO Rapid Observation, Characterization and Key Simulations. The shape models and rotation state parameters ($P$, $\lambda$, $\beta$) were computed by applying the lightcurve inversion method to the new data altogether with the archival data. For (3013) Eger and (161989) Cacus, our shape models and rotation state parameters agree with previous works, though they have smaller uncertainties. For (2100) Ra-Shalom, our results also agree with previous studies. Still, we find that a Yarkovsky - O'Keefe - Radzievskii - Paddack acceleration of $\upsilon = (0.223\pm0.237)\times10^{-8}$ rad d$^{-2}$ slightly improves the fit of the lightcurves, suggesting that (2100) Ra-Shalom could be affected by this acceleration. We also present for the first time a shape model for (12711) Tukmit, along with its rotation state parameters ($P=3.484900 \pm 0.000031$ hr, $\lambda = 27^{\circ}\pm 8^{\circ}$, $\beta = 9^{\circ} \pm 15^{\circ}$).

Abstract

The transit method is one of the most relevant exoplanet detection techniques, which consists of detecting periodic eclipses in the light curves of stars. This is not always easy due to the presence of noise in the light curves, which is induced, for example, by the response of a telescope to stellar flux. For this reason, we aimed to develop an artificial neural network model that is able to detect these transits in light curves obtained from different telescopes and surveys. We created artificial light curves with and without transits to try to mimic those expected for the extended mission of the Kepler telescope (K2) in order to train and validate a 1D convolutional neural network model, which was later tested, obtaining an accuracy of 99.02 % and an estimated error (loss function) of 0.03. These results, among others, helped to confirm that the 1D CNN is a good choice for working with non-phased-folded Mandel and Agol light curves with transits. It also reduces the number of light curves that have to be visually inspected to decide if they present transit-like signals and decreases the time needed for analyzing each (with respect to traditional analysis).

10. Fertilización por sitio específico en un cultivo de maíz (Zea mays L.) en la Sabana de Bogotá

Abstract

Se realizó un ensayo en el Centro Agropecuario Marengo (CAM), Sabana de Bogotá, para evaluar el manejo de la fertilidad por sitio específico en un cultivo de maíz. Se instaló una cuadrícula regular de 32 puntos (25 m x 25 m) para muestreo de variables del suelo y de desarrollo y rendimiento del cultivo. Mediante análisis de componentes principales de variables químicas del suelo y su humedad y de rendimiento del cultivo inmediatamente anterior, se identificaron dos zonas de manejo de la fertilidad. En cada una se aplicó un tratamiento de fertilización, considerando la variabilidad específica del suelo (AP1 y AP2) y un testigo con fertilización convencional (CAM1 y CAM2). Las variables evaluadas en los 32 puntos fueron: contenido de humedad y densidad aparente, a 2 profundidades, 110 días después de siembra (dds); altura de planta a 55, 90 y 140 dds; índice foliar a 140 dds; análisis foliar a 150 dds; mazorcas cosechadas, hileras por mazorca, granos por hilera, peso mazorca con y sin amero a 160 dds. Para el análisis de datos se usó estadística descriptiva y geoestadística, incluyendo análisis estructural, kriging y validación cruzada; igualmente se realizó un análisis de costos y beneficios, mediante presupuestos parciales, comparando AP1 y AP2 con CAM1 y CAM2. La metodología usada permitió identificar posibles distancias de muestreo para manejo de la fertilidad por sitio específico. Los mayores rendimientos y beneficios financieros se obtuvieron en AP1. Este artículo presenta resultados y recomendaciones para el manejo de la fertilidad por sitio específico en maíz para la zona.

Abstract

Objetivo: desarrollar un diagnóstico matemático de la monitoría fetal a partir de la aplicación de la ley de Zipf-Mandelbrot y las concepciones de salud y enfermedad de los sistemas dinámicos a la aparición de Componentes Dinámicos del Sistema (CDS) en el trazado de la monitoría. Esta evaluación se hace calculando el grado de complejidad de la distribución de los CDS. Diseño: este estudio es de concordancia diagnóstica basado en una aplicación de la ley de los lenguajes naturales y de simplificaciones fisiológicas basadas en la teoría de sistemas dinámicos a la aparición de CDS de las frecuencias cardiacas fetales para construir una generalización diagnóstica. Materiales y métodos: se evaluaron 100 monitorías de mujeres gestantes divididas en dos grupos: grupo A, 50 gestantes con factores de riesgo, y grupo B, 50 sin factores de riesgo. Basados en simplificaciones dinámicas, prototipos seleccionados y en la aplicación de la ley de Zipf-Mandelbrot para caracterizar el grado de complejidad usando todos los CDS posibles, se realizaron comparaciones con el resto de las monitorías diferenciando salud de enfermedad. Resultados: la dinámica cardiaca de un feto sano tiene una autorganización matemática caracterizada por su grado de complejidad y la ausencia de CDS Invertidos Pronunciados (CDSiP) y la enfermedad es caracterizada por la pérdida de complejidad o la presencia de uno o más CDSiP, o la presencia de un CDS Invertido (CDSi) mayor o igual a 20x40 hasta 20x50 asociado a la aparición de otro CDSi mayor o igual de 20x50 o de la ausencia de CDS del grupo de 15 y/o de 20 latidos/minuto de altura, o combinaciones de las medidas diagnósticas. De acuerdo a las medidas obtenidas una de cada dos monitorías del grupo B y una de cada seis del grupo A tienen un diagnóstico equivocado según los parámetros clínicos convencionales. Conclusiones: la caracterización matemática de las monitorías permitió diferenciar salud de enfermedad de manera objetiva y reproducible en el desarrollo de un diagnóstico de aplicación clínica.Objective: developing a mathematical approach to fetal heart rate monitoring by applying Zipf-Mandelbrot law and 17 conceptions of dynamic systems’ health and illness to the appearance of Dynamical Components of the System (DCS) in the monitoring trace by evaluating the degree of complexity of DCS distribution. Design: this is a diagnostic concordance study based on applying the law of natural languages and physiological simplifications (based on the dynamical systems theory) to the DCS appearance of fetal heart rate (FHR) DCS for making diagnostic generalization. Material and methods: a set of one hundred monitoring tests from pregnant patients was evaluated and divided into two groups; group A consisted of 50 women having risk factors and group B by 50 women without them. Dynamic simplifications, selected prototypes and Zipf-Mandelbrot law (for characterizing the degree of complexity using all possible DCSs) were compared with the rest of the monitoring traces to differentiate between health and illness. Results: a healthy fetus’ cardiac dynamics have mathematical self-organization, characterized by its degree of complexity and the absence of pronounced inverted Dynamical Components of the System (piDCS). The disease is characterized by the lack of complexity, or the presence of one or more piDCS, or the presence of an inverted DSC (iDSC) equal to or higher than 20x40 associated with the appearance of other iDCS equal to or higher than 20x50, or by the lack of the group of DCSs having 15 and/or 20 beats per minute, or combinations of the diagnostic measurements. One out of two monitoring tests from group B and one out of six from group A returned an incorrect diagnosis (using conventional clinical parameters) according to the computed measurements. Conclusions: mathematical characterization of the monitoring traces led to objectively and reproducibly differentiating between health and illness in developing a clinical diagnosis.

Abstract

CNDOL is an a priori, approximate Fockian for molecular wave functions. In this study, we employ several modes of singly excited configuration interaction (CIS) to model molecular excitation properties by using four combinations of the one electron operator terms. Those options are compared to the experimental and theoretical data for a carefully selected set of molecules. The resulting excitons are represented by CIS wave functions that encompass all valence electrons in the system for each excited state energy. The Coulomb–exchange term associated to the calculated excitation energies is rationalized to evaluate theoretical exciton binding energies. This property is shown to be useful for discriminating the charge donation ability of molecular and supermolecular systems. Multielectronic 3D maps of exciton formal charges are showcased, demonstrating the applicability of these approximate wave functions for modeling properties of large molecules and clusters at nanoscales. This modeling proves useful in designing molecular photovoltaic devices. Our methodology holds potential applications in systematic evaluations of such systems and the development of fundamental artificial intelligence databases for predicting related properties.
